Apple-Updates: iMovie 8.0.6, Aperture 3.0.2
Für iMovie sowie Aperture 3 sind aktuelle Updates verfügbar. iMovie 8.0.6 verbessert laut Apple “die Zuverlässigkeit beim Verwenden von Videos aus Aperture”. In Aperture 3.0.2 sollen Stabilitätsverbesserungen und die Beseitigung von Problemen enthalten sein – was aber fehlt, ist die zusätzliche Unterstützung weiterer Digitalkameras. Google cutting in Android carriers, manufacturers on ad revenue?
Free, ad-supported phones have long been a rumored endgame for Android, but the way that model ends up playing out may not happen the way everyone thought. mocoNews is citing "multiple sources who are familiar with the deals" in saying that Google has been sweetening the pot for both manufacturers and carriers of Android devices by tossing in a cut of the ad revenue generated from their services -- search, Maps, and the like. Google splitting ad revenue with Android carriers
Google is steering carriers towards Android by letting them take a cut of ad revenue, a leak may have confirmed today. More than one tipster claimed that any provider with Android phones using Google's official apps gets an unspecified percentage of the revenue from the ads that the company runs, at least in its own apps. Some of the arrangements are said by mocoNews to be carrier-specific.

Qualcomm adding the kitchen sink to Gobi, including EV-DO Rev. A, dual-carrier HSPA+, and LTE
The whole point of Gobi is that you can buy one device and use it with multiple network technologies or carriers, but apparently Qualcomm isn't kidding around about the idea. It just announced a slew of data chipsets (voice still isn't part of the picture) with all sorts of new goodies. New technologies supported include EV-DO Rev. A and Rev. B (the five people on earth using Rev. B will be thrilled), HSPA+, dual-carrier HSPA+ (which looks to be the evolutionary end of HSPA), and LTE. Briefly: MacUpdate Bundle expanded, Social Phone Book 2.0
MacUpdate has announced the addition of two new applications to its Spring Bundle. The $50 bundle already includes more than $400 dollars worth in software featuring apps such as Parallels 5 and Bee Docs Timeline 3D. The new apps include, AppDelete, an uninstaller for Macs, and WindowFlow, a utility for navigating between different applications. PulpMotion 3 gets rewritten animation engine, new themes
Aquafadas has pushed a new update to its animated slideshow software, PulpMotion 3. It allows users to build slideshows via drag -and-drop, utilizing over 100 pre-built themes, with support for music and audio/media sync. It offers HD export to Apple's Mail, iDVD, iWeb and GarageBand or to Apple devices such as the Apple TV or iPod. Windows 8 may have new anti-piracy, old SKUs
Microsoft through a pair of job postings has revealed that it's planning to implement new anti-piracy measures but also to keep its practice of arbitrarily different OS versions. An ad for a Senior Development Engineer would have the new recruit develop "new anti-hacking mechanisms" and drivers to prevent illegal copying. What it would involve isn't said, but it would affect every layer of the OS.

Mobinova Beam netbook spotted running Android, sporting other improvements
Mobinova had already mentioned that it planned to ditch Windows CE in favor of Android for its Beam netbook before the device was actually released, and it looks like it's now finally made the jump, as evidenced by Laptop Magazine's recent hands-on with the netbook. Aperture, iMovie, printer and Pro Apps updates go online
Apple has released a collection of four new patches, covering multiple products. Central is Aperture 3.0.2, which addresses general stability in the workflow app, as well as 13 individual problem areas. Some of the latter including upgrading libraries from Aperture 1.x or 2.x, creating print presets, using the Curves, Straighten and Retouching tools, and IPTC metadata. The upgrade is a 69.83MB download.

Pioneer gears up three 7.1 receivers with iPhone control
Pioneer today brought out its second AV receiver update this month with three new 7.1-channel models. The VSX-920-K, VSX-1020-K and VSX-1120-K all have special features for iPhones and iPods depending on the model. All have at least a compatible USB port that can play and charge Apple devices; the 1020-K and 1120-K have support for the iControlAV app (free, App Store) to steer the receivers, including multiple audio or video zones, balance tuning and input selection.

Magellan posts new RoadMate app for US, Puerto Rico
GPS maker Magellan has released an alternate version of its RoadMate app for the iPhone and iPod touch, RoadMate 2010 USA. Whereas the main version covers most of North America, the new one narrows focus to just the United States and Puerto Rico. Omitting Canada cuts pricing from $60 down to $40.

Netcomm was at CTIA showing off its 3G pocket router, and while they admit it apes the MiFi, it builds on it in some pretty useful ways. Battery life purportedly outdoes its rival, with four hours use, even with multiple devices connected -- and when your batteries finally do tank, connecting it to your laptop will let it recharge and still allow wireless connectivity. Buying and pre-setting up a $280 touchscreen photoframe for your mom (Isabella calls the target market "parents of parents") sounds like a tall order, and you add in the $6 a month service fee on top of that and you're really buying in here with the Vizit photoframe. Major changes needed to grow iPhone share, analyst argues
Apple may have to make some major strategic moves in order to continue growing iPhone share beyond where it is right now, claims Bernstein Research analyst Toni Sacconaghi. While there may still be some room on the current course, Sacconaghi points out that the device is already sold in 89 countries by 143 carriers, amongst which it has 39 percent of the smartphone market. It is going to be "increasingly difficult" to squeeze more profit out of current partners, the analyst observes.

Project Natal 'experience' to premiere at E3 on June 13th
No big surprise here, but Microsoft is bringing its full Project Natal setup to the E3 games show in LA this year, with a "world premiere" event on Sunday, June 13th, followed by a media briefing on Monday the 14th. It's good to know they're on track for showing this off, after a no-show at the PlayStation Move-dominated GDC, and we'll of course be there in force, waving our arms around like we just don't care. From the looks of our invite, which puts the name "Project Natal" in quotes, we're not convinced that's even the final name for the device, but we suppose we'll find out for sure in June. Die US-Webseite AppAdvice konnte - wie auch immer - einen frühen Blick auf das Inventar von Apples zusammen mit dem iPad am 3. April in den USA startenden iBookstore werfen. Die ersten verfügbaren Infos zu den Verkaufspreisen dürften angesichts der hierzulande weiterhin strittigen Buchpreisbindung für uns noch von wenig Relevanz sein, ausgesprochen interessant liest sich aber die Annahme, dass Apples Buchladen beim Start möglicherweise die komplette Sammlung des amerikanischen Project Gutenberg am Start hat. iBookstore may have whole Project Gutenberg on launch
Another leak from the iBookstore has surfaced on Thursday and suggests Apple is stocking up on public domain books. The same hunt that reportedly found $10 bestsellers has found titles clearly taken from Project Gutenberg, whose goal is to post free versions of all non-copyrighted books online. The selection hasn't been counted by AppAdvice but could include all 30,000 titles and should have classics like Mark Twain's library as well as modern-day books from open-access advocates like Cory Doctorow, among others.

Mojito WiFi display aggregates social media, works of Ernest Hemingway
Digital picture frames have long since moved passed being simple photo frames, and it looks like an increasing number are now pushing photos all the way to end of their list of features. One such device is this so-called Mojito WiFi display from Blue Lounge, which will handle photos and videos just fine, but is primarily designed to pull content from Facebook, Twitter and other social media (in addition to news and weather). iHome has released the iA5 App-Enhanced Alarm Clock Speaker System for the iPhone and iPod touch. Netflix finally ships out Watch Instantly discs for Nintendo's Wii
Wii owners have been waiting for this day to come since early January (or before, arguably), and at long last it looks as if the rental superstar has come through. BMO raises Apple stock target to $265 amid all-time highs
An analyst with BMO Capital, Keith Bachman, has raised the firm's price target for Apple stock, shifting it from $250 to $265. The figure is based partly on elevated Mac forecasts, calling for 12.7 million Macs to ship in fiscal 2010, instead of 12.3, and for 14.9 million units to ship in FY2011. Previously Bachman has been calling for only 13.8 million Macs next year.

According to the latest data from mobile advertising firm AdMob, the iPod touch is playing a large part in the growth of traffic from mobile Internet devices (MID). Internationale Verlage bereiten sich aufs iPad vor
Die deutschen Verleger halten sich mit konkreten Angaben zu ihren iPad-Plänen noch zurück, ein Blick über die französische Grenze bringt uns nun zu den ersten Euro-Preisen diesbezüglich.
Dort krempelt die Tageszeitung Le Monde rechtzeitig vor dem Verkaufsstart des iPad ihr Abo-Modell um. Für monatlich 15 Euro sollen Abonnenten ab 29. März nicht nur Zugang zur aktuellen elektronischen Ausgabe und einem 30 Tage-Archiv auf der Internetseite lemonde.fr erhalten, sondern später auch in den Genuss einer (für Mitte April angekündigten) Premium-Anwendung für iPhone und iPad kommen. Wer obendrauf noch die Printausgabe frei Haus erhalten will, bezahlt für das Komplettpaket "100% Le Monde" nach drei Einführungsmonaten zu je 19,90 Euro eine Monatsgebühr von 29,90 Euro.

Security pros see iPhone as worst workplace risk
The iPhone is the highest-risk smartphone to carry into the workplace, a study of security professionals found on Thursday. Of those asked by nCircle, 57 percent said Apple's phone is the worst mobile device threat, followed in a distant second by Android at 39 percent. Only 28 percent said the BlackBerry line is the problem, while Nokia's Symbian-based phones accounted for just 13 percent of smartphone security fears.

Apple has been experimenting with the idea of using the sun or other light sources to illuminate notebook displays, a patent application reveals. Submitted in September 2008 but published just this week, a filing explains various means by which external light could be used to amplify an LCD's output, including more mundane options such as a light bulb accessory. Franklin Wireless intros U600 WiMAX modem, R526 and R536 mobile routers
Franklin Wireless supplies modems (primarily of the CDMA variety) to a number of carriers across the Western Hemisphere, and they've introduced a handful of rather interesting new products in that vein here at CTIA this week. First up, the U600 is an EV-DO Rev. A / WiMAX hybrid USB modem with a 270-degree swiveling USB connector for those ridiculously hard-to-manage ports (ahem, Apple), integrated GPS, and zero-CD installation -- all pretty standard features these days, and we saw a Sprint-branded unit at Franklin's booth which leads us to believe we'll be seeing it at retail shortly.
Much more interesting, though, was a pair of pocketable WiFi routers -- the R526 and R536 -- that support EV-DO and EV-DO / WiMAX, respectively. Most of the units were unbranded, but we did spy an R536 done up in snow white w

LX9500: LG kommt mit dem ersten LED-3D-Full-HD-TV

Es scheint immer noch 3D Fieber zu herrschen. Wer sich bislang nicht für ein Modell entscheiden konnte, dem gibt LG jetzt etwas mehr Argumente für einen Einstieg in die 3D Welt. Schick dünn und mit nichts drumherum. LG hat den nur 22,3 Millimeter dünnen LX9500 vorgestellt und der schafft es bei einer 1080p Auflösung und einem Kontrast von 10.000.000:1 zwar immer noch nicht sonderlich erschwinglich zu sein (4134 Dollar für das 47-Zoll Modell), aber hey, wenigstens sehen damit, wie man oben merkt, selbst Koreaner aus wie waschechte Mafiosi.

Vitality GlowCap hands-on
We just got a quick look at one of those Vitality GlowCap bottles. It's about as dead simple as it looks: the LED at the top of the cap glows (orange, but there's also a blue mode that must mean something else like "you're all going to die"), and with the right amount of adult supervision you can push down and twist off the cap. All the details of the service, which involves patent recognition to figure out the best way to remind you and incentivize you to take your pills via phone calls, flashing lights, and social network reminders, aren't completely ironed out, but it sounds like Vitality is paying AT&T up front for the bandwidth -- at least you won't have another charge on your AT&T bill to worry about. Toshiba hat sein Produktportfolio um zwei Festplatten-Reihen mit bis zu 1 TByte Speicher erweitert. Die Massenspeicher sind in erster Linie für den Einsatz in Laptops und externen Festplatten gedacht. Das Modell MK7559GSXP wird in Dual-Platter-Technologie gefertigt und ist 9,5 Millimeter dick. We noticed a minor textual change on the JooJoo order page just a few days back, and apparently it was no mistake -- Fusion Garage has announced today that its long-awaited tablet PC has started to ship from the factory. For those who pre-ordered (and stuck with it), they'll get theirs as early as March 29th, while everyone can get in line by plopping down their $499 after the fact. Samsung signs $240M deal to supply iPad displays
Samsung has taken an order of 3 million LCD displays for use in the Apple iPad, an industry source tells the Korea Times. Identified only as a "high-ranking industry representative," the source says that the deal is worth about $240 million. The pricetag is said to stem from the wholesale cost of an iPad screen. "The most expensive component in the iPad is the display and touchscreen interface that costs $80 for all models," the source remarks. "The 9.7-inch display is more than twice the size of the iPhone 3GS screen and costs five times as much."

HTC: Nexus One is a success in spite of sales
The Nexus One is already a success in spite of its performance, HTC chief Peter Chou said in an interview late Wednesday. Sales have been estimated as low as 135,000 units in almost three months, but the CEO treated it as a "halo" phone that would draw more business to HTC as a whole through its profile. Patent: Sonne als Lichtquelle für Displays
Eine nette Idee findet sich in einem diese Woche veröffentlichten Apple-Patentantrag. Um Strom zu sparen und die Akkulaufzeit zu verlängern, könnte Sonnenlicht oder auch die Raumbeleuchtung durch eine Glühbirne unterstützend für die LCD-Beleuchtung von Notebook-Displays eingesetzt werden. Road Runner gives free Wi-Fi to NYC Road Runner users
Time Warner on Thursday gave Road Runner customers in the New York City area free Wi-Fi as part of their service. Both Cablevision and Time Warner Cable customers attached to the ISP will have access to the service in key public areas. Eight commuter rail platforms, including on Broadway, Flushing and Murray Hill, will give travelers free access across a wide area of the city. Several parks will also receive the same treatment, such as Bryant Park and Madison Square Park in Manhattan and four parks in Queens.

York's death exposes rift over Steve Jobs' health
Jerry York -- the recently deceased member of Apple's board of directors -- was a strong opponent of the handling of Steve Jobs' health, according to the Wall Street Journal. Jobs took a six-month leave of absence beginning in January of last year, initially citing a "hormonal imbalance" as the cause. The situation was far more dire than the company admittedly publicly however, and Jobs himself eventually confessed that he might have died if it had not been for a liver transplant that was at first kept quiet.

Smartphone use up 193% in just one year
The rise of the iPhone and Android have helped smartphone use virtually double in the past year, AdMob said today. Thanks to Apple and Google emphasizing apps, traffic in the group surged 193 percent between February 2009 and 2010; smartphones represented 48 percent of all traffic as of last month. Such a switch helped push the usage share of regular cellphones down by almost half to 35 percent, even though traffic actually grew.

Twitter meldet deutlichen Rückgang von Spam-Tweets
Twitter hat nach eigenen Angaben die Zahl der über den Mikrobloggingdienst gesendeten Spam-Nachrichten deutlich reduziert. Skype Mobile for Verizon on Android hands-on (with WiFi off)
It's been a little over a month since Verizon announced it would unleash the VoIP hounds on select smartphones, an interesting move give AT&T's wrangling with the FCC over Google Voice and begrudging approval of Skype over 3G. Early this morning the Skype Mobile app hit the Android Marketplace for Verizon devices (and only Verizon devices), and while it does work on 3G, it curiously doesn't work on WiFi -- at all. CBS readying HTML5 TV shows for iPad
CBS has publicly revealed that it has begun testing videos optimized for the iPad and bypass Flash entirely. Episodes of shows such as CSI: Miami and The Young and the Restless have been marked as "iPad - test" and, if visited by a browser identifying itself as an iPad, takes the user to a special HTML5 page that would load the clip in a frame. The videos themselves don't currently work, but HTML5 extras like a full-screen mode already work.

Das Schweizer Radio DRS hat auch im letzten Jahr ihr Podcast-Angebot ausgebaut: mittlerweile stehen 74 verschiedene Sendungen des SR DRS als Podcasts zum Download zur Verfügung. Die Downloadzahlen haben 2009 gegenüber 2008 gar um 130 Prozent zugenommen. Gesamthaft wurden im vergangenen Jahr unglaubliche 24 Millionen Downloads verzeichnet, teilte die Radiogesellschaft mit. Der erfolgreichste Podcast war jener der Nachrichtensendung «Echo der Zeit», welcher im Schnitt täglich rund 9600 Mal heruntergeladen wurde. Well, here's a way to make those 3D tellies attractive -- slim them down to unreasonable proportions and kill as much of the bezel as you can. The newly announced LX9500 isn't quite as skinny as the stuff we saw LG show off at CES, but at 22.3mm it still makes the majority of laptops look on in envy. Paired to a pleasingly minimal 16mm bezel, it makes for quite the gorgeous living room accessory, whether on or off (one more pic after the break). Jabra Clipper unites phones, music players
Jabra at the CTIA show on Wednesday announced the North American ship date for its Clipper stereo Bluetooth headset introduced at MWC in February. IMHO: Wenn der Virenscanner Amok läuft
Wovor muss ein Anwender mehr Angst haben - vor einem Virus oder vor einer Falscherkennung (false positives) des Virenscanners? Der Scanner nimmt im Zweifelsfalle den Rechner regelrecht auseinander; der Virus spioniert den Anwender "nur" aus oder missbraucht ihn als Mittäter für den Spamversand. (IMHO, Virus)

Korg hat gestern auf der Musikmesse diesen kleinen putzigen Gesellen vorgestellt: den Monotron. Winzig klein, komplett analog, mit dem Filter des legendären MS-10. Dazu kommt Lautsprecher und Batteriebetrieb. Wir waren gestern vor Ort und ziemlich begeistert. Eine derart sympatische Tischhupe haben wir lange nicht mehr gesehen, auch wenn das Spielen der Folienklaviatur nicht gerade einfach ist. Dieser Prototyp muss zurück nach Japan, mit der Auslieferung ist dennoch bald zu rechnen. Der Preis steht auch schon fest: 70 Euro.

Obgleich Spielepublisher Ubisoft sich mit seinem neuesten Kopierschutz wenig Freund und viel Feind gemacht hat, gibt es in der Welt der Diskussionen um diese Firma auch Positives zu vermelden: So ist der kommende Teil der Kultserie "Die Siedler" auch für den Mac erschienen. Leider scheint es sich nach ersten Berichten wieder nur um einen der performanceschwachen Cider-Ports zu handeln. Dennoch: Jede Veröffentlichung weiterer großer Spiele ist ein Gewinn für die Mac-Gemeinde. Doch ganz ohne den Kopierschutz nochmals zu erwähnen geht es auch hier nicht. CBS-Webseite macht Videos iPad-bereit
Auch beim amerikanischen TV-Sender CBS bereitet man sich anscheinend auf den Verkaufsstart des iPad vor. Auf der Webseite des Senders fanden sich vorübergehend Videos mit dem Untertitel "iPad-test-dan config" und 9 to 5 Mac gelang es, mit dem iPad-Simulator sowohl die Vorschaubilder der Videos anzuzeigen, wie auch diese bildschirmfüllen abzuspielen - CBS setzt also nicht mehr zwingend Flash voraus.
Ärgerlich für uns: So gut wie alle von CBS angebotenen Serien- und Talkshow-Videos lassen sich hier nicht ohne weiteres abspielen. Ähnlich wie wir es von Musikvideos auf YouTube kennen, verweigert die Webseite die Wiedergabe mit folgendem Hinweis: "The video you have requested is not available for you geographic region"

Toshiba readies slim 750GB notebook hard drive
Toshiba moved notebook storage a significant step forward on Wednesday night by launching the MK7559GSXP. The 2.5-inch drive is the first to hold 750GB but reach the same 9.5mm (0.37in) height as most slimmer notebook hard drives. As such, it can provide the capacity expected of a desktop hard drive but fit into thin-and-light notebooks like the MacBook Pro as well as all-in-one desktops and digital media hubs.

Briefly: New Keynote themes, new iPad ad platform
KeynoteThemesPlus has announced the launch of 10 new themes for Apple's Keynote presentation software. The new set of Themes in Action includes: Chart, In Red, Money, Night, Old Gear, People, Planet, Secret Eye, Tunnel and US Dollars. All of the themes are available in five different sizes allowing users to create presentations for either widescreen or traditional displays. The package of 10 themes is currently priced at $31 and includes support for Keynote 4.0 and up. Additionally, a new free World Theme has also been released through the companies website.

We spotted this details-scarce nettop-ish home theater PC lurking around the NVIDIA booth today, just looking to be loved. The thin plastic box is topped by what looks to be bamboo, with HDMI, Ethernet, microphone and speaker plugs around back. We're very much in the dark as to supposed capabilities or software, but Tegra 2 gives us a good hint: the chip can decode 1080p and Flash video, runs Android or Windows CE, and is the same thing under the hood of the Boxee Box. Hands-on: HTC's new Evo 4G Android handset
Sprint on Wednesday showed off HTC's Evo 4G, the first 4G-equipped phone to hit the US market. iPhone's SMS cracked in 20 seconds at Pwn2Own
TippingPoint Zero-Day Initiative this evening confirmed that the iPhone's SMS database has been compromised at the annual CanSecWest conference's Pwn2Own contest. Zynamics' Vincenzo Iozzo and the University of Luxembourg's Ralf Philipp Weinmann (pictured) used a malicious website in Safari to deliver a payload that could then upload the SMS logs to a remote site. The entire compromise took place in about 20 seconds, although crafting the hack took about two weeks.

Nokia's PUSH N900 finalists in action: meet Bike Dashboard, Niko, and Pit Crew
I personally had the honor of helping to judge the finalists of Nokia's PUSH N900 MOD IN THE USA contest yesterday morning, and in the process of watching all three teams do their thing, I took the opportunity to film some footage.
