Apple startet Verkauf von vertragsfreien iPhones in den USA [Update]
Update: Engadget rudert vorsichtig zurück. Ersten Berichten nach, sollen die Geräte weiterhin mit einem SIM-Lock ausgeliefert werden, so jedoch zumindest die freie Vertragswahl ermöglichen. /Update Ende

Magellan's new eXplorist GC for geocachers is far too easy to find
There's certainly plenty of GPS devices that are well-suited to geocachers, but Magellan is claiming that its new eXplorist GC is the very first such device that's been "designed exclusively for geocaching." That means you'll get loads of pre-loaded geocaches, a free 30-day premium membership to Geocaching.com (which the device links to), and even some merit-based awards that will let you boast about your geocaching skills. Samsung to announce Galaxy S smartphone, content initiatives this week
We've just received a veritable cornucopia of information around Samsung's supposed announcements out at CTIA this week -- and seeing how this is the biggest wireless show the US has to offer, you might imagine that the reveals are fairly US-focused while still hanging onto some global relevance. Here's what we know:
The company's so-called "Smart Life" philosophy for smartphone design and differentiation -- something we've heard referred to as S Life in the past, including here at CTIA -- will be formally introduced. It won't so much be a product or a smartphone platform (as far as we can tell) so much as an overarching strategy.
A 1GHz applications processor will be announced as the "new standard" in Sammy's premium smartphone segment for 2010; in all likelihood, this is the Cortex A8-based core

Official: Apple now offering iPhones... unlocked!
Uh oh, Nexus One. We heard from 9 to 5 Mac that Apple was due to begin selling an unlocked variant of the iPhone in the near future "at list price." And guess what happened when we inquired to an Apple store? That's right folks -- you can now pick one up for $499 (3G), $599, or $699 (3GS). Given the current unfriendly climate between Apple and Google, this is the perfect, nasty jab. This isn't the first time an unlocked iPhone was made available -- in many parts of Europe (France, Spain, and Poland, for example) you can pick up the carrier-unattached device -- though this is certainly a major change in policy for America. So what's next you getting one?

Apple wins Perseus books, sparks tension with Amazon
Apple today confirmed that it has struck a deal with Perseus Books Group to bring its titles to the iBookstore and the iPad. The move puts the largest collection of independent publishers on the tablet and should make the titles available by the time the iPad ships on April 3rd. Perseus' involvement should provide books from firms like restaurant guide Zagat, Harvard Business School Press and other both fiction and non-fiction publishers.

George Takei can't show you Sharp's fourth pixel, can still blow your mind

iPod touch 'supergraphic' ad to be removed in LA
An iPod touch ad is one of two "supergraphics" the city of Los Angeles has ordered removed, according to the LA Times. A cease-and-desist request has been acknowledged by CBS Outdoor, the firm responsible for the signs. Both ads can be found at 1025 North Highland Avenue, and are roughly 11 stories in size, dominating opposite sides of the building there.

SanDisk ships 32GB microSDHC card for $200
Our 16GB microSDHC card has been treating us well since shipping early last year, but obviously no capacity is capacious enough. SanDisk has just announced that a Class 2, 32GB version of its microSDHC card is now shipping (remember that "something big" thing?), bringing gobs and gobs (and gobs) of free storage to whatever phones still support it. Google pulls China search, redirects to uncensored site
Google today acted on its threat to stop censoring China and at least temporarily took down the official Google China search page. Visiting google.cn now steers visitors to the Hong Kong page, which isn't blocked by China's government-run filters and will show results for Tiananmen Square protests and other normally censored results. It now also shows results in simplified Chinese to help mainland readers in addition to the traditional used in Hong Kong.

App Store gains gifting options
Apple has changed the terms of the iTunes Store to allow gifting apps, investigation shows. While people have traditionally been able to gift music and videos, the policy has not until now extended to the App Store, despite the growing popularity of the iPhone and the iPod touch. The change should be beneficial to Apple and third-party developers in terms of encouraging the discovery of new apps.

Samsung ships noise-cancelling Modus BT headset
Samsung on Monday announced that its Modus headset is now shipping in the US. The device has dual-microphone and features noise-cancelling technology and can also stream users' music as it doubles as a stereo Bluetooth headset. Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 review
Of the world's largest phone manufacturers, perhaps none has taken a more twisted road to smartphone ubiquity than Sony Ericsson. It began its journey back in the pre-joint venture Ericsson days by throwing its weight behind Symbian, a smartphone platform that would ultimately become the world's most popular -- but it made a fatal error in supporting the doomed UIQ flavor that never saw even a fraction of the support its S60 cousin did. Hillcrest confirms Hulu blocking web browser
Hillcrest Labs confirmed its suspicions Monday afternoon with word that Hulu is deliberately blocking its new Kylo web browser from playing videos on the site. Dan Simpkins, Hillcrest's CEO, didn't get an explanation but believed that Hulu saw the TV-friendly interface as enough of a threat to conventional services by itself that it had to be banned. The executive was optimistic that talks would change Hulu's attitude.

Right on cue, just after the aptly-timed teaser poster, Motorola signs on just the right dotted lines to make its i1 push-to-talk Android handset official. Steve Jobs touts superiority of iPhoto over Picasa
iPhoto has "much better" organizational features than Google's Picasa, claims Apple CEO Steve Jobs. The statement comes in response to an e-mailed question about the iPad Photos app, in particular asking whether people will be able to import Picasa face and album data into Photos through iTunes. AMD six-core CPU prices and clock speeds unearthed
The gang at DigiTimes have always struck us as processor obsessives -- constantly out on the streets, roughing up mobo manufacturers, getting them to spill their secrets (they probably look like Gene Hackman in Night Moves). And they've sure been busy, this time digging up some dirt on AMD's six-core Phenom II line. Hitting shelves as soon as the second quarter this year, the X6 1035T will clock in at 2.6GHz, the 1005T at 2.8GHz, and the 1075T at 3GHz. Quantum dot tech leading to ultra-quality phone cameras
InVisage today showed a new technology that could improve the image quality for phone cameras. QuantumFilm replaces some of the silicon in an image sensor with a layer of quantum dots that get the imprint of an image and uses the remaining silicon to produce the final image. Since it covers the entire pixel, it jumps the amount of receivable light from 25 percent to as much as 95 percent and doubles the dynamic range in the process.

Viliv S10 Blade gets reviewed, Best Buy now selling Viliv devices
The folks at UMPC Portal have already treated us to an unboxing of Viliv's new S10 Blade convertible netbook, but they're now back with a full review that gives a better picture of the device. On the whole, they seem to be fairly impressed with the device, noting its thin and sleek design, and its "silent, rugged operation." They were also pleasantly surprised by the battery life, which clocked in at an impressive 7.5hrs with WiFi on during general use. On the downside, the resistive multitouch screen wasn't quite as responsive as they would have liked, and there are a few other minor annoyances

Buffalo unveils USB 3.0-equipped MiniStation Cobalt
Buffalo on Monday put out what it hopes should be one of the fastest portable hard drives available. While using a regular 2.5-inch hard disk on the inside, the MiniStation Cobalt adds USB 3.0. Samsung's Super AMOLED-packin' Wave S8500 priced in Germany: €429
Samsung's world-beater -- you know, that Wave S8500 that debuted back at Mobile World Congress -- was revealed without one of the most vital statistics, but that's being remedied today courtesy of a product listing over at Amazon's German portal. The Bada-equipped device, complete with a Super AMOLED display that's supposedly viewable in broad daylight, has found a €429 MSRP across the pond, which equates to around $579 using today's highly volatile exchange rates. Granted, that's a contract-free (read: unsubsidized) price, but we're still going to hold out for a late-night session with the new OS before pinging our importer.

iTunes Store: Verschenken von Apps bald möglich
Immer wenn man nach einem iTunes Neustart die AGB erneut akzeptieren muss, wurde irgendwas geändert. Bei der letzten Änderung wurde den Usern endlich erlaubt, auch Apps zu verschenken. Zwar ist diese Option noch nicht im Store umgesetzt, aber durch die AGB lässt sich mit ziemlicher Sicherheit jene Funktion voraussagen. Übrigens: Die neuen Geschenkoptionen können "nicht für den Erwerb von In-App-Käufen, Upgrades oder den iPod touch OS verwendet werden."

Start-up vervierfacht Auflösung von Kamerasensoren

Erste Beta von Ubuntu 10.04 steht zum Download bereit
Mit leichter Verspätung haben die Entwickler der Linux-Distribution Ubuntu eine erste Beta der neuen Version 10.04 (Codename "Lucid Lynx", zu deutsch "leuchtender Luchs") freigegeben. Außerdem stehen auch Vorabversionen der Varianten Ubuntu Server, Ubuntu Studio, Edubuntu, Kubuntu, Mythbuntu und Xubuntu zur Verfügung. Die Final von Lucid Lynx erscheint laut offiziellem Zeitplan nach zwei eingeplanten Betas und einem Release Candidate am 29. April 2010.

SanDisk reveals "something big:" 32GB microSDHC card

Hillcrest Labs builds TV-friendly Kylo browser for its Loop pointer, Hulu promptly blocks it
In what is becoming a depressingly familiar tale, Hillcrest Labs has just released a free new browser based on Mozilla with a TV-friendly UI designed for control from the couch, but despite these friendly and standards-compliant underpinnings, Hulu has already managed to block the Kylo browser, mere hours out of the gate. Apparently Hulu worked fine in testing all the way up to launch, and Hillcrest Labs is looking for a solution as we speak. Hillcrest, Boxee feels your pain.

Die Schweizer Regierung hat vor kurzem beschlossen, dass gewalttätige Videospiele gänzlich aus dem Land verbannt werden können. Damit könnten bald die Regale frei von jeglichen Spielen ab Ü16 sein. Dass damit nicht nur potentielle Amokläufer und Terroristen, sondern auch ein weitaus größerer Anteil an Normalbürger-Gamern betroffen ist, scheint ziemlich egal zu sein. Wie die Ausführung aussehen soll, darüber wird natürlich noch heftig gestritten. Die rechtliche Lage hat sich dort aber eindeutig Richtung Zensur bewegt.

Hillcrest intros TV web browser; already blocked by Hulu?
Loop pointer creator Hillcrest Labs began its week through Kylo, one of the first web browsers explicitly meant for home theater PCs. The app gives a Mac or Windows PC an interface designed for the larger sizes and longer viewing distances of modern flat panels. Chinese Apple Stores expected to spur wide boost in sales
Plans to build 25 new stores in China should significantly help Apple's local sales, argues Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty. Intel near shipping low-power, unlocked Core i7 chips
Intel is near launching a trio of new Core i5 and i7 processors that all push into new territory, a series of leaks have shown. One slip suggests that the company will launch the Core i7-875K in early June. The quad-core, likely 3.33GHz chip would be the first Nehalem-based processor with an unlocked clock frequency and would be tailored to hobbyists. While overclocking has been possible before, the move would let experienced users change the clock speed directly instead of modifying the bus speed and voltage.

AT&T used the prelude to CTIA to reveal three of its promised smartphones, including crucial news for Palm. Adobe rolls out Flash Builder 4, ColdFusion Builder IDE
Adobe has formally launched Flash Builder 4, a new suite of web development tools. IE loses share to Firefox, Opera after browser ballot
Microsoft has lost share in web browsers since Europe's browser ballot was rolled out, new data confirmed today. While Internet Explorer's worldwide share has been largely stable, European data from Statcounter shows that the browser has lost almost 1 percent in the UK, 1.3 percent in Italy and 2.5 percent in France with about a month of the ballot being active in trial form. A full deployment is due in May.

Want to make a giant Gundam monument more better? Give it a beam saber and erect it just 45 minutes outside of Tokyo by bullet train. The resurrected 18-meter (59-foot) tall RX-78-2 mech will replace the dismantled 30th anniversary statue built at Shiokaze Park, complete with smoke, dramatic lighting effects, and animatronic head. Siemens-IT-Mitarbeiter demonstrieren gegen geplanten Stellenabbau
Mitarbeiter von Siemens IT Solutions and Services (SIS) demonstrieren heute an zahlreichen Standorten gegen die vergangene Woche angekündigten Umstrukturierungspläne des Siemens-Vorstands. Die angekündigte Neuausrichtung geht mit einem rigorosen Arbeitsplatzabbau einher. Bis 2011 sollen etwa 4200 der weltweit rund 35.000 Angestellten gehen. In Deutschland sind von den Stellenstreichungen etwa 2000 der derzeit 9700 SIS-Mitarbeiter betroffen, vor allem in großen Standorten wie München, Paderborn und im Großraum Nürnberg und Erlangen.

In letzter Zeit spiele ich hauptsächlich 2D-Prügelspiele, seien es nun die Spiele aus der Street Fighter-Reihe oder diverse SNK-Prügler.
Als ich dann vor einiger Zeit las, dass Street Fighter IV für das iPhone erscheinen sollte, war ich etwas ungläubig. Wie sollte so ein Spiel ordentlich auf dem iPhone funktionieren. Es gibt zwar bereits Blades of Fury (hier vorgestellt) aber Street Fighter ist schließlich eine ganz andere Klasse und Fans werden mit großen Erwartungen an das Spiel gehen. Erste Blick auf Amazons Kindle fürs iPad
Bis Apples virtueller Buchladen iBookstore außerhalb der USA eröffnet, soll es ja noch ein Weilchen dauern (wir berichteten). Ausgesprochen erfreulich für Leseratten kommt daher die Ankündigung einer Amazon Kindle-App für das iPad. Engadget hat ein paar erste Screenshots. Schon länger hat ja der Buchhändler Barnes & Noble einen Shop für das iPad angekündigt, somit buhlen also bald drei mächtige E-Book-Anbieter um die Gunst der iPad-Kunden. Für uns ist diese Entwicklung ausgesprochen erfreulich, es ist anzunehmen dass dieser Konkurrenzdruck sich auch positiv auf das internationale Angebot auswirkt.

Die Lesezeichenverwaltung von Googles Webbrowser Chrome ist relativ dürftig - er beherrscht zwar Copy & Paste, kann aber ansonsten nur schlecht über die Tastatur gesteuert werden. No, we can't give you a clear reason why this particular chap did this particular thing, but good gravy, look at the pretty pictures! We've come across an iPhone-inspired font that looks to have been created by collating and color coding a vast collection of apps in order to properly represent the English alphabet.
