Dell rolls out Vostro 230 Slim Tower, Mini Tower desktops
They may not be quite as sleek as their latest laptop counterpart, but Dell's two new Vostro 230 desktops are both at least fairly compact and, most importantly, cheap. Available in both Slim Tower or Mini Tower form factors, the desktops start at just $389 or $299, respectively, but can of course be upgraded significantly from there, including processors up to a 3.0GHz Core 2 Quad Q9650, a maximum 4GB of RAM, up to 2TB of storage (from two 1TB drives), and your choice of NVIDIA GeForce G310 or GeForce GT220 graphics (in addition to the standard integrated option). Canon notes audio problems with new 5D Mk II firmware
Canon has cautioned on its website that the 2.0.3 firmware update for the EOS 5D Mark II DSLR has audio problems. When users change the manual recording levels for the C1, C2, or C3 modes and Sound Recording is set to Manual, the camera will not record sound along with video if power is turned off manually or automatically after idling. Canon urges 5D Mark II owners who have already downloaded the firmware to mitigate this issue by setting Sound Recording to Auto.

YouTube: Viacom would demand removal of videos it covertly uploaded itself
As you may have heard, Viacom and YouTube have been having a little tift lately, in the form of a major lawsuit by the former over copyrighted material posted on the video portal. It's a lawsuit that, according to YouTube, will cause such video sites to "cease to exist in the current form" -- but more importantly, it's a lawsuit that leads to some rather hilarious behind-the-scenes details. Here's a really juicy one that the official YT blog published today by Chief Counsel Zahavah Levine. Word has it that Viacom had hired over the years at least 18 different marketing firms to inconspicuously upload content. We can't really say it better than the posting:

Jobs erklärt iMac-Display-Fehler für behoben
Das Display des neuen iMac war einer der großen Schwachpunkte: Zahlreiche Kunden beschwerten sich über einen Gelbstich, ein Flimmern oder gar graue Balken. Apple hat zwar zahlreiche Updates veröffentlicht, ein Leser von 9to5Mac wollte es aber ganz genau wissen und hat schlicht beim Chef nachgefragt. Dieser hat in seiner bekannten knappen Form geantwortet. Jobs wörtlich: "Das Problem liegt hinter uns." Witziges Detail am Rande: Die E-Mail-Header verraten, dass seine Jobsigkeit nicht etwa mit einem geheimen iPhone-Prototypen unterwegs ist, sondern nach wie vor die Version 3.1.2 verwendet. Amazon Kindle als Programm für den Mac
Nach eigener Aussage ist der Amazon Kindle wahnsinnig erfolgreich. Um diesen Erfolg weiter anzutreiben, und die Absätze der eBooks weiter zu steigern, veröffentlichte Amazon nun auch einen eBook-Reader für den Mac. Palm sells less than half the phones shipped in winter
Palm this afternoon reported a dramatic fall in smartphone sales for its winter quarter. The company shipped 960,000 smartphones between December and February but only sold 408,000 of those devices. Its shipments were exactly triple what it had supplied a year earlier but were countered by a 15 percent drop in actual sell-through to users at carriers like O2, Sprint and Verizon.

Palm posts $22m Q3 loss, 'making great progress on future products'
Palm gave us a heads-up back in late February that its upcoming earnings report wouldn't exactly be cause for celebration, and today the news has become official: the outfit recorded a net loss of $22 million during its fiscal Q3, which still looks rosy compared to the $98 million loss it suffered this quarter a year ago. All told, the firm shipped 960,000 smartphones in the period, which represents a 23 percent uptick from Q2 2010 and a nearly 300 percent increase compared to this quarter in 2009. PocketMac for BlackBerry 5.0 redesigned for Snow Leopard
PocketMac has launched an update to its self-titled sync software for BlackBerry users. The software syncs BlackBerry handsets with Apple's Mail, iCal and iTunes software, along with Entourage 2004/2008 and Now's Contact and Up-To-Date utilities. It can also sync Mac Stickies or transfer iPhoto content to a smartphone. Each sync also backs up call logs and SMS history.

T-Mobile USA eyeing iPhone launch this year or next?
We don't like to stir up the nearly constant barrage of "so-and-so is getting the iPhone" rumors unless we've got a great reason to do so -- and we'd argue that a Financial Times report involving statements from Deutsche Telekom's CEO qualifies. The British rag was chatting up DT's boss over the prospects of its American unit -- T-Mobile USA -- and stressed the company's long-term commitment to turning around T-Mobile's fortunes in the face of recent spinoff rumors, saying that it's all about rapidly building out a speedy 3G network as part of an effort this year "to lay the foundation for future growth."

Leak: early iPad sales could outpace original iPhone
The iPad's pre-orders have been strong enough that they could outrun even the original iPhone launch, according to a new slip of details from the company. Pre-orders have already reached into the "hundreds of thousands" in the past week and are predicted by WSJ sources to be strong enough that there could be more iPads sold in the first quarter of sales than the 1.12 million the iPhone managed in its own first full quarter in 2007. Unofficial estimates have already put Apple's pre-order tally at 200,000 units, not including in-store pickups.

Briefly: Bookmaker's odds on iPad sales, Cinedition launched
Oddsmakers at YouWager.com have set down odds on when Apple's iPad will hit one million units sold. The device was originally estimated to have sold 120,000 units in the first day, but then slowed to rates around 30,000 each day. 27-inch Cinema Display, 12-core Mac Pro rumored for June
Apple is planning an update to its pro lineup that would include only its second LED-lit Cinema Display, a pair of sources noted today. T-Mobile US angling to get iPhone in late 2010, 2011?
Deutsche Telekom chief René Obermann in an interview today hinted that T-Mobile USA is hoping to land a deal for the iPhone. Apple patent application offers more evidence of projector plans
They're easily missed about the mass of Apple patent applications revealed each year, but the company has filed a few regarding projectors (pico projectors, specifically), and the latest one to be published has now offered a few more details on how they might all fit together. iPad pre-orders near 200K, reserves at 700 per store
Apple could have 200,000 iPad pre-orders within just a week, according to new estimates. After discounting non-iPad orders, well-regarded unofficial analyst Daniel Tello has determined that Apple has obtained about 180,000 pre-orders for the tablet as of mid-Wednesday. While the rate has slowed to about 10,000 advance requests per day, the figure would be enough to pass the 200,000 mark by Friday.

Wir finden ja die Joysticks auf der Rückseite des Windows Phone 7 Tablet Konzeptes am besten. Da weiß doch jemand, dass man eine schickere Xbox für den Küchentisch dringend braucht. Aber auch der Vielzweckstand der nebenher auch als Keyboard dient (wobei wir allerdings nicht wissen wie das dann noch stehen soll) ist smart. Und ja, irgendwie glauben wir auch dran, dass Windows Phone 7 mit Sicherheit ein ebenso gutes Betriebssystem für ein Tablet sein wird, wie das iPhone OS. Intel facing shortage of Core i3, i5, i7 notebook chips?
Intel may be facing a chronic shortage of its primary mobile processors, some in the notebook business said this morning. Acer is said to have been enthusiastic enough about expected demand that it has ordered large batches of Intel's Core i3, i5 and i7 chips, creating problems for others that want the same parts. Amazon wants three-year Kindle deals to squeeze Apple
Amazon has escalated the growing feud between itself and Apple by issuing ultimatums to e-book publishers, inside stories from the industry claimed on Thursday. The online retailer has allegedly been pressing major publishers to sign three-year contracts that not only guarantee Kindle books for the period but would prevent them from offering a better price to Apple or any other e-bookseller. These publishers could use the agency model and set their own prices, the NYT noted, but only if Amazon was given equal or better treatment.

Markt für mobile Apps wächst bis 2012 auf 17,5 Milliarden Dollar

Windows 7 Phone: Copy/Paste wird nicht unterstützt
Monatelang, gar Jahrelang, war auf dem iPhone die Copy/Paste Funktion nicht ermöglicht worden.
Viele Anwender sahen das als K.O.-Kriterium für das iPhone.

Studie: Unternehmen wechseln verstärkt zu Windows 7
Eine neue Umfrage besagt, dass immer mehr Unternehmen planen, auf Windows 7 umzusteigen. Mehr als die Hälfte der Befragten gibt an, dass sie bis zum Jahresende Computer mit Microsofts neuem Betriebssystem im Einsatz haben werden. TiVo Premiere spotted in Best Buy with March 28th retail date
If the minature box doesn't give it away then the word "Premiere" certainly does. That's the first in the wild shot of TiVo's inaugural Series 4 shifter riding the shelves of Best Buy. Nach eigener Aussage ist der Amazon Kindle wahnsinnig erfolgreich. Dell debuts wireless, 3D-capable S300w short-throw projector

Das Apple-Verwaltungsratsmitglied Jerome York liegt im Krankenhaus. York wurde gestern nach einem Zusammebruch eingeliefert. Seine Frau erklärte gegenüber Bloomberg, dass die Ärzte Hirnblutungen festgestellt haben. Der 71-Jährige war in seiner Karriere unter anderem Finanzchef von IBM und Chrysler.

With not so much as a hint of fanfare (and a very loose definition of "coming soon"), Amazon has quietly unleashed its Kindle app for Mac. Google said rallying support for AdMob deal
Google is turning to other companies to get them to back its AdMob buyoua, a late-night rumor claimed Wednesday. The search firm would counter FTC inquiries by having mobile ad companies write in support of the buyout, which it could use as leverage against criticism. They have reportedly been asked to say the acquisition wouldn't hurt their business or dampen the competitive market.

HTC responds to Apple's patent lawsuit, will 'fully defend itself'
HTC hasn't filed its official reply to Apple's patent lawsuit in court yet, but the company just gave us an updated and expanded statement on the case, saying that while it "strongly advocates intellectual property protection," it disagrees with Apple's actions and will "fully defend itself." Natch. HTC obviously wasn't eager to divulge whether or not that means it's going to countersue Apple with its own patents, but we're sort of expecting it -- we'll find out more when lawyers do their thing in a few weeks. It's hard to argue that Windows Phone 7 Series' Metro UI concept isn't utterly unique in the mobile world, but it was wasn't the only option Microsoft considered -- far from it, in fact. Microprocessor mega-shocker: self-assembling silicon chips could lead to ever smaller circuitry
Researchers have been hard at work for the past few years trying to build computer chips using self-assembling circuitry built of molecules -- meaning that they're incredibly teensy. We've definitely learned a ton about Windows Phone 7 Series here at MIX, but getting the full picture on multitasking has been difficult, since the OS isn't ready, no one has final hardware, and the emulator seem to behave differently than actual devices and Microsoft's descriptions. Apple on Wednesday released beta 5 of the iPhone 3.2 SDK for iPad through the iPhone Dev Center. The release has come just over a week after the launch of beta 4 and shows Apple accelerating its effort to refine the software before the iPad is available on April 3rd. Google TV to bring Android, Chrome to TV boxes
Google's rumored Android-based TV box is real and has some of the world's largest electronics companies involved in making it a reality, a major leak has revealed tonight.
