Microsoft: Windows Phone 7 series 'will not initially offer copy and paste,' case-specific actions integrated into OS
Here you go, folks, an official statement from Redmond itself on the perennial Windows Phone 7 Series / copy-and-paste discussion. First and foremost, from the onset, there will be no copy and paste in the traditional sense; Microsoft is hoping to bypass the issue by integrating into the OS common, case-specific, single-tap instances for viewing an address on a map, doing Bing searches based on highlighted terms, dial a phone number, and so on. But the book isn't entirely closed here, apparently, as the statement goes on to say the company "will continue to improve our feature set over time based on what we hear." Sprint's HTC Touch Pro2 gets official Windows Mobile 6.5 update

Apple bans game after developer criticizes App Store
Apple pulled one of Tommy Refene's iPhone apps following the developer's public criticism of the App Store, according to Kotaku. Refenes spoke for several minutes at the recent Game Developers Conference, saying he "absolutely f***ing hate[s] the iPhone App Store." He reportedly compared the iPhone gaming market to the low-quality Tiger handheld platform of the '80s and '90s.

T-Mobile talking to Clearwire to help get 4G wireless
T-Mobile late Thursday confirmed circulating rumors that it was talking to Clearwire about a possible partnership in the wireless space. The cell network's US chief, Robert Dotson, said his firm was investigating a joint venture with "opportunities for additional spectrum" and that Clearwire was a candidate along with unnamed cable providers. What this would exactly entail wasn't stated, nor was how close T-Mobile was to a deal.

Equinux on Friday released an update to SongGenie, a utility for improving music libraries. Version 2 automatically searches for song lyrics from a variety of web archives. Microsoft dishes out Windows 7 SP1, Windows Server 2008 R2 details
Both still seem to be a quite a ways from a release, but Microsoft has now announced a few details for its forthcoming Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 updates. The latter of the two actually seems to be the more significant, as it adds a so-called RemoteFX feature that Microsoft describes as the "special sauce" in its Remote Desktop Services. The short of it is that RemoteFX uses virtualized graphics resources and is able to function independently of any graphics stack, which Microsoft says will allow "any screen content" (including Silverlight and Flash) to be delivered to everything from full-fledged PCs to low-cost, thin client devices. Analysts rate Palm at $0, see 197 days of unsold stock
Palm was delivered harsh criticism today as analysts downgraded the company following its poor fiscal performance. Canaccord Adams' Peter Misek maintained a "sell" opinion but called for a price target of $0 as he expected the company's situation would only get worse. He predicted a vicious circle that would see carriers and part producers back out with doubts about Palm's ability to stay in business, hurting its ability to sell devices even more.

Apple now accepting iPad app submissions, get your jumbo-sized beer drinking simulations in before launch day
Apple just announced to developers that it's now accepting iPad applications. From the sound of it, applications submitted now will have a shot at being reviewed and approved before the iPad launch next month, though since most all apps developed so far have only been tested in the emulator, this is more of a "feedback" round for devs looking to be ready for the launch without actually testing their apps on hardware themselves. Apple says that "[o]nly apps submitted for the initial review will be considered for the grand opening of the iPad App Store," so you probably shouldn't wait around -- unless you've got one of those iPad test units

Palm shares take 25% plunge after downer earnings announcement

Synaptics driver enables multitouch gestures on older trackpads
Haven't updated your laptop's trackpad driver lately? Then you may well want to consider doing so, at least if your laptop is equipped with a Synaptics trackpad. As a user on the Hardware Zone forums discovered, the latest Synaptics driver seems to enable multitouch gestures on older laptops that didn't previously support them, including two-finger scrolling, and three-finger click. Apple may be counting on games and not e-books to carry the iPad in the early stages, analysts at Flurry found today. Of early developers known to be developing with actual iPads, almost half at 44 percent are making games. E-book apps are in a relative minority but are still second place at 14 percent.

LHC breaks its own energy record, still less powerful than Lady GaGa
The Large Hadron Collider is no stranger to setting energy records: back at the end of November it broke the 0.98 TeV record by hitting the 1.18 TeV mark. Vodafone Spain replacing microSD cards on 3,000 virus-infected handsets
It looks like the virus-strewn HTC Magic that was recently purchased from Vodafone UK is only the tip of the iceberg. Really, would you expect anything less from Apple? All sorts of wild tales have emerged about Apple's tight restrictions on developers lucky enough to receive early iPad test units, and no matter how true they might be, we're eating it up with a spoon. Microsoft sued again by VirnetX over same patents
Microsoft suffered its second legal setback in as many days on Friday with word of a second patent lawsuit from VirnetX. The accuser hopes to expand on the $105.8 million fine against Microsoft by claiming that Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 also infringe on the same patents for VPN networking that were the subject of the prior lawsuit. VirnetX didn't specify what it hoped for in damages but characterized the second complaint as plugging a gap that would otherwise exempt newer versions of Windows.

Recently, the UK opened its first rehab clinic for Internet Addiction (the provocatively named Broadway Lounge), but that was only the beginning. Canon fixes EOS 5D Mark II bug in new firmware
Canon today quickly acted on the discovered audio bug in its latest EOS 5D Mark II firmware by rolling out a 2.0.4 update. After patching earlier in the week, the full-frame DSLR had encountered a bug that would cut off audio when manual recording levels were selected during video capture in the C1, C2 or C3 custom modes. HP slate may cost $45 more than iPad
The in-progress HP slate may actually be more expensive than the iPad when it goes on sale, a Spanish hands-on has revealed. The tablet is said to be shipping to the US in June, and in Europe would carry a price of 400 euros, or $544. While not a direct US translation, the price could make it more expensive than the $499 iPad even while it ships later.

Bei Apple Insider hat man ein wenig über die Zukunft der Hardwaresparte bei Apple herausgefunden, die nicht iPad heisst. Ein 27 Zoll Cinema Display mit einer Auflösung von 2560x1440 soll im Juni rauskommen und sich zwischen den 24 und 30 Zoll Modellen wohlfühlen. Obendrein, das ist wohl wirklichen Arbeitern wichtiger, kommt der neue Mac Pro in 6 und 12-Core Varianten, wobei ein (bzw. zwei) Xeon 5600 Prozessor(en) zum Einsatz kommen. Die billige Variante soll ca. 2500 Dollar kosten. Aber wann weiß noch niemand.

India's Bharti Airtel on Friday said it would start selling the iPhone 3GS through its stores. The agreement with Apple doesn't have a set launch date and will be ready only in the "coming months." York, Mitglied im Apple-Vorstand, starb im Alter von 71 Jahren an den Folgen einer schweren Hirnblutung. Wintek allegedly to blame for iPad delays
Wintek on Friday was accused in a report by Taiwan's Liberty Times of triggering a delay in iPad shipments. A choke point in its touch panel production line has allegedly resulted in few usable panels and stalled Apple's supply as a result. The newspaper didn't say whether this would affect launch volume, although to date Apple still promises shipping for April 3rd.

PVI demonstriert Amazon und B&N schon mal ihre Farb-E-Ink Displays

In Shenzen zeigt PVI, die die Screens für Amazons Kindle produzieren, schon mal, wie die neue Generation von E-Ink mit Farbe aussehen wird. Im 4ten Quartal sollen die 6 und 9,7 Zoll Bildschirme ja auch schon in Produktion gehen. Bislang hat allerdings weder Amazon noch Barnes & Noble wirklich zugesagt, dass sie die neuen PVI Screens benutzen werden. Video läuft übrigens auf den Bildschirmen, wirkt aber eher wie ein Bilderbuch, da die Refreshrate einfach zu langsam ist.

Bestellnummern-Analyse: 200.000 iPads innerhalb einer Woche online vorbestellt
Seit genau einer Woche ist es für US-Kunden möglich, Vorbestellungen für das Ende Januar präsentierte iPad aufzugeben. Die Analyse der Bestellnummern ergab, dass allein in den ersten beiden Stunden ca. 50.000 Bestellungen getätigt wurden. Palm enttäuscht mit elftem Quartalsverlust in Folge

Neues Apple-Patent: «iGroups»
Apple hat im September 2008 in den USA ein Patentantrag eingereicht, welcher dieser Tage veröffentlicht wurde. Das Patent beschreibt eine Technologie namens «iGroups», welches zum Beispiel einem iPhone erlaubt, sich mit anderen Geräten zu einer Gruppe zusammen zu schliessen. Eine Gruppe besteht somit aus mehreren Geräten die z.B. via Bluetooth oder WLAN erreicht werden können (Abhängig vom Radius). Geräte dieser Gruppe können dann via einem Cloud-System (z.B. über Apples Mobile Me) Daten austauschen wie Dateien, Kalender-Einträge oder Kontakte.…

Auf der nächste Woche beginnenden CanSecWest-Konferenz will der Sicherheitsexperte Charlie Miller insgesamt 20 Zero-day-Sicherheitslücken in Mac OS X veröffentlichen.

Endlich entspannter Einkaufen: In Korea werden RFID Tags geschrumpft

Schon lange wir uns eine Zukunft versprochen in der RFID-Tags auf allem sind und die Dinge immer genau über sich selbst bescheid wissen. Das Internet der Dinge eben. In Korea an der Suncheon Nationaluniversität hat man jetzt einen Weg gefunden mit Nanopartikeln RFID-Tags zu drucken, um sie später mal - ca. 5 Jahre soll es noch dauern - als Barcode-Ersatz einsetzen zu können. Bei Sciencedaily freut man sich jetzt schon auf das Ende der langen Schlangen im Supermarkt, weil an der Kasse nichts mehr langwierig eingescannt werden muss, die Koreaner allerdings planen eher, den kompletten Supermarkt realtime über sein eigenes Inventar auf dem Laufenden zu halten. Die 5 Jahre nehmen wir mal mit der nötigen Portion Vorsicht.

Für gewöhnlich sind Patente eine recht langweilige Angelegenheit, auch weil die beschriebenen Produkte wenn überhaupt erst Jahre nach Antrag realisiert werden. Ein neustes Patent für eine iPhone-App hat dann aber doch unsere Aufmerksamkeit erregt: Apple beschreibt eine App namens 'iGroups', die basierend auf Geodaten dynamisch Netzwerke zwischen Geräten erstellt. Die Position von Anwendern, deren Geräte nicht über GPS verfügen, werden über die Verbindungsqualität zu den jeweils anderen Gruppenmitglieder positioniert. Lediglich zwei Tage nach dem letzten Entwicklerbuild hat Apple eine neue Entwicklerversion von Mac OS X 10.6.3 freigegeben. Die Buildnummer stieg nur noch um einen Zähler (10D571 auf 10D572), zwischen den beiden Builds liegt also keine weitere kompilierte Version mit Modifikationen mehr. In Tokyo am Intelligent Systems Information Lab (ISI) hat man jetzt den ersten autonomen Roboter entwickelt, der durch Gegenden fahren kann, Veränderungen entdecken, Interviews führen, Online Recherchieren, Bilder schiessen und, falls er es für nötig hält, die Geschichten dann gleich auch auf seinem eigenen Blog veröffentlichen kann. Nachruf: Jerome B. York ist tot
Bei aller Freude, Trauer, Wut, Enttäuschung oder Anbetung der kalifornischen Firma Apple darf man nicht vergessen, dass hinter dem angebissenen Obst auch echte Menschen stecken. Nachdem Steve Jobs im vergangenen Jahr mit einer schweren Krankheit zu kämpfen hatte, gibt es nun leider einen herben Verlust zu beklagen. Jerome B. York, Mitglied im Apple-Vorstand, starb im Alter von 71 Jahren an den Folgen einer schweren Hirnblutung. Jobs trauert um einen Freund und Kollegen mit den Worten: "Jerry joined Apples Board in 1997 when most doubted the companys future. He has been a pillar of financial and business expertise and insight on our Board for over a dozen years. Its been a privilege to know and work with Jerry, and Im going to miss him a lot."

Marvell, die auf dem Mobile World Congress ihre Pantheon Plattform und Armada Familie vorgestellt haben, die Smartphones für 99 Dollar mit HD Kapazitäten möglich machen, dreht jetzt auf und will selber ein Tablet ins Rennen schicken. Beim Preis von 99 Dollar soll es HD Videos bis 1080p unterstützen, GPS, Bluetooth, WiFi und Radio. Obendrein sind sie für Android und WIndows Mobile konzipiert. Apple verteilt 10.6.3-Build 10D572 an Entwickler
Erst gerade diese Woche verteilte Apple den 10.6.3-Build 10D571 an die registrierten Entwickler, nun folgte in der Nacht auf heute 10D572 (ca. 724 MB). Die letzten paar vorhergehenden Builds listeten in den Seed Notes keine bekannten Fehler mehr, 10D572 und 10D572 nun jedoch listen je ein Fehler betreffend Safari 4.0.5. Gerücht: 27-Zoll-Cinema Display und Zwölf-Kerne-Mac Pro bis Juni
Apple arbeitet nach Informationen von AppleInsider an einer 27-Zoll-Version des LED-Cinema Display und einem neuen, weiterhin auf Intels Xeon-Prozessor basierenden Mac Pro mit bis zu zwölf Prozessorkernen. Beide Produkte sollen bis zum Sommer erscheinen.

XBox 360 bald mit USB Schnittstelle später neuem Motherboard

Bei Joystiq haben sie ziemlich in den Plänen für die XBox 360 gebohrt. Zunächst mal soll Unterstützung für USB-Sticks kommen. USB-Sticks? Ja, richtig gehört, denn es geht nur bis 16GB. Dort kann man dann allerdings auch Spiele und nicht nur Spielstände oder ähnliches sichern. Das alles mit einem Update noch im Frühling. Obendein wurden die Bilder des Valhalla (ouch) Motherboards von Ben Heck unter die Lupe genommen. Kein Memory Card Reader mehr, kein WiFi und vielleicht wird die Xbox noch mal einen Hauch kleiner. Google China could be ceasing operations in April, says report
Just when you were hoping things would get better for the bickering search giant and nation-state, along comes apparent word from Shanghai-based Chinese Business News (via Bloomberg), citing an anonymous Google China employee, that the company is looking into closing up shop on April 10th. That's a far cry from what we heard late last week, that it would stay in the country, albeit in a potentially modified form. Microsoft's Windows Live Messenger phone for France is hardly Pink
Microsoft's a pretty big company, and while we've been focused on its Windows Phone 7 Series and Pink mobile projects over here in the Land of the Free, its Live Messenger arm has apparently teamed up with French mobile carrier SFR for a branded phone. Logic Express, Pro updates add more 64-bit support
Apple on Thursday night released version 9.1.1 updates for Logic Express (138.8MB) and Logic Pro (191.9MB). The patching focuses on extending 64-bit support and, in Logic Express, adds support for 64-bit native mode. as well as compatibility with 64-bit Audio Unit plugins. Other fixes in Express allow support for file names longer than 32 characters and proper sample mapping when Contiguous Zones is used in the EXS module.

Nokia's Design by Community makes smartphone concepting a multiplayer game, with limits
Nokia's community blog has opened up the crowdsourcing floodgates, at least in theory. For "Design by Community," users will be able to vote on smartphone features via a series of sliders, although within an arbitrary point allotment system. Marvell's $99 Moby tablet to play 1080p for students
Marvell on Thursday promised one of the most aggressive plans for a tablet so far. As part of a new initiative, a tablet prototype known as the Moby would cost just $99 but would use Marvell's Armada 600 ARM processor to provide performance that would be unavailable from much more expensive devices.
