Library of Congress eyes National Film Registry streaming scheme

In the digital age, libraries all over the country have been looking for ways to remain relevant and useful as they continue their core mission of giving people access to media and educational materials. To that end, The Library of Congress has announced plans to make selections from the National Film Registry available for streaming online. Of course, as the Federal Times notes, some of the copyright owners might balk at the suggestion (it's hard to imagine George Lucas ever letting anyone freely stream Star Wars) but in theory this isn't a bad idea, at all. Earlier this year, we asked how you'd change Palm's Pre Plus and Pixi Plus, both of which were launched with webOS 1.x. Needless to say, a lot can happen in three calendar quarters. First bug of 2011: iOS alarms not going off?

Apple's iOS 4, which has had ongoing problems with alarm settings, may be suffering a new wave of faults as alarms are being disabled as the clock strikes 12 around the world, according to reports on Twitter. The 4.x version of iOS has had difficulties with alarms relating to Daylight Savings Time in November that affected different regions around the world, but these new reports say that all pre-set alarms are disabled in versions 4.1 and higher, suggesting that the problem still hasn't been completely fixed by Apple.

Boxee to get Vudu next week, Netflix in late January

Boxee just before New Year's apologized for the delayed additions of Netflix and Vudu to its Mac and Windows desktop apps and the Boxee Box while giving new timetables. Netflix and VUDU not hitting Boxee Box till January... as if you couldn't have guessed

According to a post that's just gone live on Boxee's blog, users the Boxee Box won't see VUDU or Netflix content on their TVs until January. We know, the wait will be painful. According to the Boxee team, VUDU offerings should hit the platform as soon as next week, but Netflix won't be made available until the end of the month. The company claims that both services are up and running in its offices, but more time was needed to "test each application to make sure they are ready for launch." It's nice to know where we stand, though it would have been even nicer to get more frequent updates on the status of these apps, instead of a last-minute blog post on New Year's Eve. We're not exactly sure of the cause of this fancy new issue affecting Apple's super cool iPhone line of cellphones, but apparently you've got trouble come 1/1/2011. 2010 in review: Rise of iOS

Here, in no particular order, are some of the top stories we saw in 2010. The year was packed with Apple announcements, some planned and one unplanned. The real standout this year was iOS coming into its own. This year's WWDC was all about iOS, for example. The Apple TV now runs iOS. iOS 4.2 breathed new life into the already-new iPad, another major story of the year (a wildly successful one at that).
