Best Buy outlets to get Genius Bars, bigger Apple displays?
Best Buy shops could gain a feature previously unique to Apple Stores, a report suggests. A source working at one Best Buy outlet says he was told by his Apple representative that the Best Buy Apple sections will be undergoing a spring transition. This should include not just a greater number of products on display, but the addition of Genius Bars, the source claims.

AMD CEO Dirk Meyer resigns, CFO Seifert takes interim role
What a day for chip news, eh? First NVIDIA and Intel set aside their vicious rhetoric in a $1.5 billion cross-licensing deal, and now AMD is shaking things up at the very top. Now-former CEO Dirk Meyer has resigned in what the company is a calling a "mutual agreement" between him and the Board of Directors. Interim CEO will be CFO Thomas Seifert, who has asked not to be considered as a candidate for the next chief. Intel agrees to pay NVIDIA $1.5b in patent license fees, signs cross-license
Between slagging each other off with cartoons like the one above and taking each other to court over chipset licenses, there's been no love lost between NVIDIA and Intel over the past few years -- but it looks like the war is over. The two companies just announced a new six-year cross-licensing deal that will see Intel paying NVIDIA a total of $1.5b over the next five years for access to NVIDIA's technology, while also giving NVIDIA a license to some of Intel's patents. T-Mobile UK cuts fair use cap to 500MB, blocks video after
Cellphone provider T-Mobile UK will soon reduce its fair-use policy on data down to 500MB per month. This is a huge reduction, as before this, those with Android smartphones enjoyed a 3GB mobile data limit. Once 500MB is reached, subscribers will no longer be able to download or stream video and other media files but will continue to have access to web browsing and e-mail access.

TUAW takes Sleeve360 iPad case for a spin -- literally
Way back in November, we featured a video from ThinkFast LLC starring the Sleeve360 for iPad. This case has an adjustable back hand strap that provides a comfortable one-handed hold on the iPad, and allows the iPad to rotate a full 360 degrees.

Microsoft investigating errant Windows Phone 7 data use
Worried about your Windows Phone 7 handset chomping down megabytes of 3G data when it should be asleep or utilizing WiFi instead? Microsoft hears your telegraphed fears, and has pledged to sleuth such suspicions of "phantom data" immediately. VLC iOS developers respond to app's removal
Applidium is mystified at the iOS VLC app being pulled from the App Store, according to one of the developers. Romain Goyet comments that on Friday, the company received an e-mail from Apple informing them of the decision. "We regret that the dispute regarding your application named ëVLC Media Playerí could not be resolved amicably between the parties. We have removed your application from the App Store. Zune HD Mac support secretly hidden in Windows Phone 7 connecter software
We've been begging Microsoft to somehow add Mac compatibility to the Zune for years, and it looks like there's a tiny little ray of hope buried in Redmond's Windows Phone 7 Connector for OS X: a simple plist modification will let it sync the Zune HD as well. That really shouldn't be any big surprise, since WP7's media interface is built on top of Zune, but at least it's something -- although we're still hoping and wishing for the full Zune suite (and Zune Pass) to make its way to the Mac someday.

Verizon iPhone could cost extra, says JP Morgan analyst
Verizon could charge around $20 to $30 more than AT&T for subsidized iPhones, claims JP Morgan's Mark Moskowitz. The analyst observes that in order to properly support Verizon, any new iPhone model must use the CDMA networking standard, the hardware for which is more expensive than the GSM/UMTS used by all current iPhones. He adds though that while buying an iPhone could be more expensive through Verizon, the issue might be offset by better network performance.

Kindle for iOS gets background downloads, file support
Amazon today posted a major update to the Kindle app for the iPad and iPhone (free, App Store). Its 2.5 update now takes advantage of iOS 4 and will finish, though not start, a book download in the background. Borrowing from its companion app Stanza, it now supports raw files as well and can load supported text from Mail or Safari in addition to using iTunes' File Sharing for sideloading books from a computer.

XtremeMac shows off new docks and chargers at CES 2011
XtremeMac had a suite at the Bellagio (my favorite hotel on the Strip, I think) for last week's CES conference, and I stopped by to check out their latest lines of accessories and cases for the upcoming year. My favorite product in the booth is pictured above -- it's a speaker dock called the Tango TRX that features a removable dock that can be unattached from the sleek speaker. It's Bluetooth-enabled for streaming audio directly from your iDevice, and there's a free universal app that will let you control the speaker with a virtual remote.

4G at CES 2011: AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile make big moves
Traditionally, CES isn't a huge mobile event -- the biggest phone news has historically been saved for MWC in February and CTIA in March -- but that changed in a huge way this week. BlackBerry still holds 69% of business, iPhone makes inroads
The BlackBerry still holds a majority lead in the corporate space but is losing ground to the iPhone at smaller shops, TNS found on Monday. Among all businesses, the BlackBerry had 69 percent of the US but saw its share drop sharply outside of big companies. Enterprises with 1,000 or more staffers were dominated by RIM's 81 percent share, but the iPhone now had 35 percent of small business, or twice as much as it had overall.

How the iPhone has influnced Intamac's connected home services
Intamac was probably one of the least consumer-facing appointments we had at last week's CES conference in Las Vegas -- the company develops and supports home monitoring systems, mostly for other businesses (security companies and telecommunications companies) rather than actual consumers. California Supreme Court says warrantless searches of suspects' text messages are legal
Planning on getting arrested in California any time soon? You'd better make sure your text archives are free from any incriminating information as the state's Supreme Court has now ruled it legal for police to check your missives folder without the need for a warrant. The justification for this privacy intrusion is that a phone search is "incidental" to a lawful arrest and its contents, much like the contents of your pockets or bags, fall within the realm of reasonable search. Kabel Deutschland: Weitere Städte erhalten 100 MBit/s

Evernote Mac use spikes following Mac App Store debut
Evernote may change its focus substantially following unusual success on the Mac App Store, says the company's CEO, Phil Libin. "It's a very big deal," he writes. Apple Stores certified by US Green Building Council...barely
While Apple has made great gains in the environmental friendliness of its products, manufacturing and facilities, the U.S. Green Building Council (GBC), a "non-profit community of leaders working to make green buildings available to everyone within a generation," has identified its retail stores as ripe for improvement. Apple earned the group's low "certified" ranking, but it wasn't due to poor design or implementation.

Ford Focus Electric pops a hatch and shows all that battery junk in its trunk
The five-door Ford Focus is an eminently practical vehicle, and the Electric version will be as well. However, we're now learning that it won't be quite as practical as we'd hoped. Google Goggles gets ad scanning, Sudoku hooks
Google today posted a new update for Goggles on Android and the iPhone (free, App Store) to expand what and how well it can scan. The 1.3 app can now pull up results based on ads from large-scale magazines and publishers in the US, starting from August 2010 onwards. An unusual extra addition brings the ability to solve Sudoku puzzles just by snapping a photo of the original sheet.

Rumor: Best Buy stores to add more Apple products, get Genius Bars
An anonymous tipster who works at a Best Buy store let us know this morning that he was informed by his Apple rep that the Apple section of the computer department will be going through a transition sometime this Spring to allow more products to be displayed. At the same time, the stores will get a Genius Bar, up to this time a fixture only at Apple Stores.
If this is true, this marks the first time that Apple has expanded some of the trademark features of the Apple Stores to other retailers. This, and the earlier report today about a Mac setup section in Apple Stores, seem to mark a renewed commitment to

Mercedes SLS AMG E-Cell hitting dealerships in 2013
You may disagree with the car's color and its powertrain choice, but you can't argue with 528 horsepower, 649lb/ft of torque, and AWD acceleration so good it should come with a neck brace. It's a legitimately hot car, and it's legitimately coming to dealerships. Mercedes today confirmed that the SLS AMG E-Cell will be available for order at dealerships in 2013, and while no price was given, expect it to be a lot. The gasoline-powered model cost around $200,000, after all. Oh, and that citrus color? It's pretty stunning in the flesh, a matte hue that makes you go "Mmm."

Apple stock rises to over $342 intra-day
On a day where the Dow Jones Industrial Average is down by US $38.20 and the Nasdaq composite is nearly flat, once again, AAPL is bucking the trend and going straight up. At this writing Apple stock is at $342.05, (a new intra-day high) and bouncing. So far the stock is up $5.93 or 1.76 percent on moderate volume. I'm sure that this is at least partially due to the anticipated Verizon (VZW) announcement tomorrow. Surprisingly enough, Verizon is about flat for the day trading at $36.01 or up only $0.08 so far. If the Verizon announcement goes as we all hope, I can see this continuing, but who knows?

Apple drops iPhone 3GS drops to $49 on contract, we pretend the timing is coincidental
Hey, a phone that Apple introduced back in 2009 (that'd be the iPhone 3GS) is now selling -- brand new with a two-year voice / data agreement -- for $49, both at AT&T and through Apple directly. Of course, you could get the far more capable iPhone 4 for a fair amount more, or you could wait until tomorrow so you'd actually have an option when it comes to carriers. Your call, obviously.

Hey, your iPhone's untied!
In the market for a shoe-phone? iShoes are funky little iPhone cases coming out of Asia that make your phone look like a tiny, somewhat flattened-out sneaker.
Recently available for purchase from Japan-based vendor Strapya, iShoes are made by Korean company Play Hello. These colorful cases seem to have been around since earlier this year but surprisingly without much foreign fanfare. Strapya is selling the iPhone 4 iShoes cases on site for 2380 yen (or about $28), and the company will take orders from outside Japan. Cases are available in an assortment of colors: black, blue, orange, pink, red, and white.

Palm Voice Test portal foreshadows Verizon's LTE voice plans, quasi-affirms new pricing
See that image above? It's not a forthcoming Palm LTE phone for Verizon Wireless, but it could be a sneak peek into Big Red's plans for the future. If you'll recall, VZW's CTO Tony Malone hinted last week at CES that integrated LTE voice + data wouldn't come until 2012 or 2013 at the earliest, and for now, all LTE devices would be relying on 3G for voice and 4G for data. Heck, not even all of the first-wave LTE devices will support simultaneous 4G data + 3G voice. Toyota debuts new Prius models, including family-friendlier Prius V
Toyota made no bones about the fact that more Prius models were to be unveiled in Detroit for the North American International Auto Show, even throwing advertisements up around town asking whether it's supposed to be Priuses or Priii. Apple will drop restocking fees on January 11
A rumor out of 9to5 Mac suggests Apple will drop its 10% restocking fees starting January 11th. These fees were assessed when a customer brought a product back within the 14-day return and could get quite expensive, especially for the high-end MacBook Pro notebooks or Mac Pro desktops.
The reasoning behind this rumored policy change was not divulged, but Apple may be following in the footsteps of Best Buy, which got rid of its restocking fees this past holiday shopping season.
This new no restocking fee policy may also explain why some Apple stores were covering their windows

Pixelhead: Neo Urban Camouflage
Der Designer und Künstler Martin Backes hat diese smarte Maske namens Pixelhead entworfen. Noch ein Unikat und somit Kunstwerk, aber durchaus massentauglich. Ganz in Google-StreetView-Verpixel-Manier kann man sich die Haube für den urbanen Tarnkampf überwerfen und so auch für die reale Umwelt seine Privatsphäre bewahren, wenn es denn so gedacht ist. Der Clou: das Gesicht auf der Maske stammt vom deutschen Innenminister Thomas de Mazière, verpixelt natürlich, man will ja keine Persönlichkeitsrechte verletzen.

Apple wins transfer of Nokia suit to Delaware
Apple has won a minor procedural victory in its legal battle with Nokia. One lawsuit, in which the two companies are each asserting seven patents against one another, is now being transferred from the Western District of Wisconsin to the District of Delaware. The US Supreme Court later on Monday declined to review a lawsuit accusing RIAA music labels of price fixing for digital music. Users of Apple's iWork.com public beta received an email this morning with an "important service message" about new features and enhancements to the service.

Novatel confirms its Verizon LTE modem is Mac-ready
Novatel at CES confirmed with us that the USB551L 4G modem it unveiled at CES would be the first LTE modem in the US to work with Macs. PlayStation Phone captured in the wild, on video
Well, the leaks have been flying fast and furious: the presumed PlayStation Phone has been in the hands of folks for a hot minute, and now a video has popped up showing one lucky hombre playing Resident Evil 2 and Rage Racer on the device. The hardware is apparently on the up and up, although the fact that the titles had to be loaded through ROM Buddy suggests that the software is still being tinkered with. Für 350 Dollar (271 Euro) kann man nun HD-Videos im Auto-Entertainment-System begutachten, ob die dafür passenden Displays in der Karre Platz haben, steht auf einem anderen Blatt. OmniVision's OV10810 image sensor handles 1080p video recording, 10 megapixel image capture
OmniVision has just let loose its OV10810, hailed as the first native 16:9 CMOS image sensor to enable simultaneous 1080p HD video recording and ten megapixel image captures. The chip is built upon the company's 1.4-micron OmniBSI pixel architecture, and it's obviously aimed at digicams, camcorders and higher-end smartphones. Generally speaking, any camcorder that can snag stills on the side does so at a terribly low resolution, but this bantam slab of silicon would obviously serve as a solution. Als eines der ersten Smartphones erfuhr das iPhone 3G jüngst, wie sich das Android OS 2.3 Gingerbread “anfühlt”. Mithilfe des Boot-Managers OmniBoot, der wiederum auf iBoot basiert, konnten Hacker das neueste Android-System auf dem iPhone 3G installieren.

HyperMac's portable charging systems are back on the market with a revamped product line that does not violate Apple's patents. HyperMac was faced with a patent lawsuit from Apple over the company's charging cables, which used Apple's MagSafe and 30-pin connectors. The company stopped selling the infringing cables on November 2, while continuing to produce its line of HyperJuice batteries. It's a very retro affair -- the idea is that you control a pixelated ship, and fire, given an angle and speed, at another ship on a starfield. Your lines are drawn out as you fire on the screen, and the goal is to navigate the complicated gravity to hit the opposing ship. Prius this ain't. Take a gander at Porsche's 918 RSR, which just rolled onto the company's stage at the 2011 North American International Auto Show. Motorola Xoom: WiFi-Version schon im April
Natürlich ein kleines Orakel, denn Motorola hat das Honeycomb-Tablet für Europa nich nicht einmal offiziell angekündigt. Nicht schlecht, das Problem ist aber, dass man für das Umdrehen der Seiten weiterhin selber zuständig ist, also eine Menge Zeit verlieren dürfte. Apple announces dates for iTunes Festival London 2011
Apple has announced dates for this year's iTunes Festival London. Like last year, the festival will run every night in July. 60 artists will be performing over 31 days at Camden's Roundhouse in London. Three of the confirmed bands are Linkin Park, Duran Duran and Rumer.
As in years past, tickets to the shows are only available for free via competitions. Apple will be giving away a limited number of tickets for each showing. The entry form for the competition can be found here. Participants may apply for as many of the gigs as they'd like but are limited to the three confirmed bands for now.

9to5 Mac reports that Apple will drop its 10 percent restocking fees on January 11th. We've confirmed with our own sources that this is true. January 11th happens to be the day that Verizon will hold a mysterious event in New York City, presumably for the Verizon iPhone. While this certainly isn't incontrovertible evidence that the Verizon event is actually more of an Apple event, this definitely adds some tinder to the flaming rumor mill. XpanD Youniversal 3D glasses hand & face on
We weren't able to check out the customization features of XpanD's latest active shutter LCD 3D glasses, but we did get to try them on at their booth for a moment. They're markedly lighter than the company's other 3D specs and the side pods for the battery and settings storage seem to do a decent job of blocking light from the sides. We'll need to sit down for a few rounds of NBA 2K11 3D or Resident Evil: Afterlife to know how they hold up in real life but in the meantime check out the pics in the gallery.

Kinect soll quasi-offiziell für den PC erscheinen
Das Einsatzgebiet von Microsofts Bewegungssteuerung Kinect wird sukzessive ausgebaut. BlackBerry PlayBook won't have native BBM, e-mail on launch
The recently tested BlackBerry PlayBook won't have native support for core messaging features when it ships, the company's Senior Product Manager Ryan Bidan said in a video interview (below). Initially, the BlackBerry Messenger, calendar and e-mail functions will need the BlackBerry Bridge pairing feature that shares a BlackBerry phone's services over Bluetooth. True local access is coming but doesn't have a definite roadmap.

Motorola Xoom: pretend UI hands-on walkthrough (video)
The Motorola Xoom is a huge product this year for two reasons: it's a major first tablet from a major Android manufacturer, and it's the flagship device for Honeycomb, an OS that's been announced for dozens of other tablets here at the show, but not actually shown running on any of them. Steam TV Elocity 3T glasses-free TV eyes-on
There's been no shortage of glasses-free 3D at CES but we can't' say we expected Steam TV, makers of those Elocity tablets, to be showing off wares of its own. While the company is promising lots of spectacle-free TVs with parallax screens in the next year, at its booth there was just a 42-inch 1080p 3T1 panel on the show floor. Griffin CarTrip will track efficiency and show diagnostic reports (video)
We mentioned the CarTrip when they announced it earlier in the week, but after seeing this thing in person at CES I really want one. Primarily because the device will allow you to clear the stupid "check engine" light in most cars made after 1996 with an ODB-II port. You see, the CarTrip features a dongle which plugs into the ODB-II port in your car, and communicates via Bluetooth with an iOS device (in your hand or dashboard).

Azpen shows off dual, dual-boot Windows / Android tablets (hands-on)
You didn't think were were done with tablets at CES just yet, did you? This latest offering comes courtesy of Azpen, which is actually introducing two variations on a dual-boot Windows 7 / Android tablet: one with a 16:9, 10.1-inch screen, and one with a 4:3, 9.7-inch display. Both are otherwise identical, however, and pack an Atom N455 processor, a capacitive display, "up to" 2GB of RAM and 32GB of storage, a microSD card slot, two USB ports, and Android 2.2 alongside Windows 7 (though the early demo unit on display was only running Android 1.6). AT&T jabs Verizon iPhone early, Verizon holding 'vital' call
AT&T public relations head Larry Solomon and a well-known Verizon staffer on Sunday gave away further clues that Verizon's January 11 event was centered around the iPhone. Rather than deny the loss of iPhone exclusivity this year, Solomon when asked about Verizon's unlimited iPhone data plans acted as though the Verizon iPhone was a known quantity and claimed AT&T would stay safe due to speed. A CDMA iPhone's use of 3.1Mbps EVDO Revision A for 3G would leave it at a disadvantage versus the 7.2Mbps HSPA 3G of the iPhone 4 on AT&T, SAI was told.

Philips uWand hands-on
Philips has been touting its uWand "direct pointer" remote for a good while now, but we've never had the chance to actually use one ourselves. Today that omission has been rectified as we got our mitts around this motion / gesture-based controller and gave it a quick test drive. It works by having an infrared camera embedded in the front, which detects an IR beacon in your TV and thereby judges its own distance, tilt and relation to the TV. That then allows for things like motion-based zooming, pointing the remote at the particular thing on the television that you want to "click" on, and navigational shortcuts attached to gestures performed with this handheld. Apple may drop restocking fees on Verizon iPhone day
Apple may be planning a broad end to its restocking fees at retail that would help fuel its Verizon iPhone launch if claims Sunday are accurate. The company would permanently waive the 10 percent penalty for anyone returning a device in the usual two-week grace period, starting January 11, the same day as the special event. The unsourced 9 to 5 Mac claim didn't say for certain if it was a permanent policy or a promo timed with the Verizon deal, but it wouldn't be exclusive to the one device.

Quirky rolls Perch Bluetooth speaker, mobile dock hybrid
Quirky marked the occasion of CES by bringing out a unique speaker dock sourced partly from its user community. The Perch cradles and charges most smartphones and media players over USB but has a magnetically detachable Bluetooth speaker that can follow its companion device outside of the room. The base has its own mic as well and can act as a speakerphone.

Samsung shows flexible and transparent displays at CES 2011 (video)
We spent a few minutes at the show this week ogling the prototype displays that Samsung's Mobile Display unit has produced over the last few months, headlined by some particularly awesome 4.5-inch flexible and 19-inch transparent AMOLEDs. Infos zu SandForces neuem Consumer-SSD-Controller
Von SandForce selbst war bisher kein Wort zur zweiten Generation der SSD-Controller für Consumer-Produkte zu hören. Das Unternehmen stellte im vergangenen Oktober lediglich die zweite Generation für Enterprise- und Industrial-SSDs – SF-2500 und SF-2600 – vor. Auf der CES gibt es nun einen Hinweis auf die Consumer-Variante.
