Hulu sale bidding period ends, no clear front runner
Bids for the latest attempt to sell Hulu closed on Friday at 2PM PST, with no clear leader. Reportedly at the top of the bidding with very similar offers are DirecTV, The Chernin Group, and Guggenheim Digital Media. Two other bidders allegedly behind the top three are Time Warner Cable, and equity firm Kohlberg Kravis Roberts. Beyond just undisclosed cash considerations, the conglomerate that currently own the digital video streaming service are evaluating content licensing provisions, which vary suitor to suitor.

Mangelnder Erfolg: BBC legt 3D-Produktion auf Eis

Apple TV bald mit App von Time Warner Cable?
Inhalte von Time Warner Cable könnten demnächst auf dem Apple TV zu sehen sein, denn Apple und Time Warner Cable (TWC) sollen kurz vor dem Abschluss von Verhandlungen stehen. Bereits seit Juni dieses Jahres spreche TWC mit Apple, Samsung und Microsoft über Video-Streaming. Der Deal soll ein Angebot ermöglichen, das es auch für die Set-Top-Box Roku gibt. Auf dieser können TWC-Abonnenten 300 Live-Kanäle verfolgen. Sky Deutschland testet sprechende Zugfenster (Video)

Darauf hat die Welt gewartet: Sky Deutschland möchte, dass uns Zugfenster Werbung ins müde Ohr flüstern. Lehnt man den Kopf ans Fenster, überträgt ein kleines Kästchen die Botschaft mittels Knochenschall über die vibrierende Scheibe direkt ins Innenohr. Die verantwortliche Agentur BBDO Germany hat die Technik angeblich bereits erfolgreich in den Regionen München und Aachen getestet. Ob sie auch eingesetzt wird, ist zurzeit aber noch offen. BBDO träumt davon, dass ihr "Talking Window" neben Werbung auch Infos oder Musik übertragen könnte, aber dafür gibt's ja zum Glück schon appetitlichere Methoden.

Briefly: ABC tightens live streaming on iOS, Thins from SwitchEasy
ABC has tightened restrictions on its Watch ABC Live Stream, now requiring all users to verify they are on a cable subscription with a username and password. First released back in May, the Watch ABC app was limited to people in New York and Philadelphia, but didn't require any proof of a cable subscription. However, ABC has also announced that it is expanding the services reach, allowing subscribers in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, and Raleigh-Durham to access the live streaming service from an iPad.

Netherlands to launch iPad-based 'Steve Jobs schools' in August
Starting in August, 11 so-called "Steve Jobs schools" will start running in the Netherlands, says German publication Der Spiegel. The schools will be primarily iPad-based, substituting the tablet for things like textbooks and blackboards. Students will also be free of strict schedules, homeroom teachers, and even grades, choosing what they want to learn about and completing projects at their own pace.

Southwest Airlines offers passengers live in-flight TV from Dish
Satellite TV provider Dish Network will be providing free live TV to passengers on Southwest Airlines flights. The service, titled TV Flies Free, will be available on more than 400 Southwest planes with Wi-Fi onboard, and will offer up to 75 on-demand shows at no charge, as well as access to 13 live-streaming channels.

Flipboard says it didn't lose Google Reader data
Flipboard did not lose users' Google Reader data, the company now says. The Flipboard apps, available for iOS and Android platforms, aggregate news feeds into a magazine-style format. Google Reader content was a supported option, and Flipboard promised to convert feeds before yesterday's Reader shutdown. Users were confused earlier today, however, when Reader content initially appeared to have gone missing during the transition.

Pebble smartwatch heading to Best Buy stores, on sale July 7
The Pebble smartwatch will be hitting retail for the first time this weekend, allowing potential owners to pick up the device without waiting months for a pre-order to be fulfilled. Apple rumored to be hiring Paul Deneve from French fashion house
Apple is hiring Paul Deneve away from French fashion house Saint Laurent, a source tells AppleInsider. Saint Laurent has confirmed that Deneve is leaving his current position as CEO, but as for his destination will only say that he's going to "pursue a career in the technology industry." Apple has refused to comment, and the source hasn't provided any details on what role Deneve might take on.

AT&T grows LTE coverage to 35 more towns and cities
AT&T has expanded its LTE 4G coverage to 35 new towns and cities, according to an announcement. The rollout is spread across a wide number of states, including Texas, Florida, Colorado, Louisiana, Georgia, Arkansas, Washington, California, Missouri, New York, Minnesota, West Virginia, Oklahoma, Massachusetts, North and South Carolina, Mississippi, and New Jersey. Some notable cities include Cape Cod, Atlantic City, and Lafayette.

Report: Time Warner, Apple near deal for Apple TV content
If a reported deal between Apple and Time Warner Cable goes through, subscribers for the latter will be able to access channels and programs directly through the Apple TV set-top box at some point in the near future, Bloomberg says. The move, if true, will be announced at some point later this year and continue the expansion of services Apple is offering directly through Apple TV so that users don't have to leave the environment to enjoy broadcast content. The negotiations follow on the heels of deals with HBO (owned by Time Warner) and Disney's ESPN.

Samsung protests Apple's reassessment of damages for November retrial
In the shadow of the buildup for the 2014 Apple versus Samsung patent trial, the 2012 trial echoes are still being heard. Samsung is attempting to get the case schedule for the limited damages retrial vacated, claiming that Apple is breaking the court's rules by claiming "vastly greater damages" than it was awarded in end of the first landmark trial. Samsung believes that Apple's new damages expert, hired after the death of Terry Musika, is using faulty assumptions to stack the deck in Apple's favor.

iPhone takes top spot in South Korean customer satisfaction
A new survey of 44,168 smartphone owners in South Korea has revealed that in terms of customer satisfaction, their favorite smartphone is Apple's iPhone, reports local site Naver. The result, an acutely embarrassing loss for native Korean firm Samsung, saw Apple get the nod for the best after-sale support as well. The iPhone was also higher ranked for Apple's speed in fixing any devices that needed repairs, and the survey also noted that iPhones were the least likely to need repairs in the first place.

Skyhook: Google co-founder sabotaged our relationship with Apple
Documents in Skyhook's third legal action against Google have surfaced, accusing Google co-founder Sergey Brin of disparaging the company in discussions with Apple in the early days of geolocation on Apple's iPhone. Skyhook believes that Brin "had discussions with Apple representatives about Apple's announcement regarding Skyhook's location technology and Google's displeasure with it."

YouTube renews multi-year music video deal with Vevo
Google has announced that it has signed a new agreement with music video purveyor Vevo. The move keeps the 50.2 million users a month it draws on YouTube, and prevents the content from being added to FaceBook. The deal is said to be worth between $40 and $50 million, and as part of the deal, Google is investing in the company.

Onswipe: Developer, tester interest in iOS 7 beta very high
Mobile web advertising and optimizing company Onswipe is reporting that interest in the iOS 7 beta is growing at a furious pace, with three quarters of a percent of the iPhone user base already running the software in beta. The figures represents at a minimum more than two million iPhones, far higher than those running the iOS 6 beta at the same point in its development cycle. While some of that figure may be users who have pirated the (notoriously unstable and buggy) beta, most is believed to be developers who need to match their apps to iOS 7's new look.

The Walking Dead: 400 Days coming to OS X now, iOS next week
Telltale Games' video game version of the hit TV show and comic book The Walking Dead has spawned a sequel, called The Walking Dead: 400 Days and acting as a transition between the first and second "seasons" of the show, book and game. Unusually, the new game is available as a $5 in-app purchase from the existing Mac or iOS game. The Mac version is slated to be released today, July 3, while the iOS version will follow a week later. The game follows the story of five new survivors at a truck stop in Georgia.

FCC claimed to approve Sprint acquisition by Softbank, Clearwire deal
The Federal Communications Commission will allow for the acquisition of Sprint by Softbank, according to a report. Members of the Commission have apparently voted on the purchase with two out of three commissioners voting for the deal, and all but effectively completes the $21.6 billion deal between the two carriers.

USA network brings app with full TV episodes to iOS

Briefly: Real Racing 3 update adds new cars, Limbo for iOS
An updated version of EA's Real Racing 3 game for iOS featuring more than 55 new vehicles has been released. On top of new cars from Bentley and Mercedes-Benz, the v1.2 update also offers a new progression system that will allow users to gradually unlock cars and events as they move through a career. Boston University sues Apple for patent infringement
Boston University is suing Apple over infringement of a patent for thin, insulating monocrystalline gallium nitride films. The Boston Herald reports that the case was filed Tuesday through the US District Court of Massachusetts, and that the patent in question dates back to 1997, credited to computer engineering professor Theodor Moustakas. The university lists the iPad, iPhone 5, and MacBook Air as infringing products.

Native Instruments has started shipping the Traktor Kontrol Z1, a combined mixer and audio interface intended for use with the company's iOS and desktop Traktor apps. A new version of Twitter's Vine, 1.3, has been released for iOS. Apple seeds third OS X 10.8.5 beta to developers, retail workers
If it's Wednesday, there must be a new beta of the forthcoming OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.5 for developers to test. Apple has issued build 12F17 -- once again only four builds higher than the previous release -- for testing by program developers and, most recently, Apple retail store workers. As has been the case with the previous betas, no known issues are listed and testers are asked to focus on Wi-Fi (including new 802.11ac testing) and the "wake From sleep" function, both of which have seen issues for some in Mountain Lion.

Follow-up: Koreans prefer iPads over Android tablets as well
Following on from an earlier report that found the iPhone beating both Samsung and other Android-based smartphones in Samsung's home court of South Korea, the National Consumer Satisfaction Index has also revealed that the iPad has also beaten Korean companies Samsung and LG in customer satisfaction for the third year running. The tablet survey was drawn from a sample of only 278 people rather than the more than 40,000 from the smartphone sample, and reflects Korea's small --but slowly growing -- tablet market.

Poster for Kutcher 'Jobs' biopic debuts ahead of August opening
Following along two weeks after its first theatrical trailer, the independent biopic Jobs has unveiled the official movie poster, which capitalizes on star Ashton Kutcher's strong resemblance to the Apple co-founder and former CEO. Accessory maker Satechi launched its Bluetooth Wireless Smart Keypad yesterday, for use in an Apple user's workspace. The number keypad can toggle between a calculator mode and a keypad mode, allowing for both arithmetic operations and basic prompt-inputting functions. The Bluetooth Wireless Smart Keypad is small enough to be easily portable, and features a large LCD screen that displays up to twelve digits at a time. Father of computer mouse Douglas C. Engelbart dies at age 88
Technologist Douglas C. Engelbart died on Tuesday night at the age of 88. The US Navy World War II veteran and Oregon State graduate is credited with inventing the "X-Y position indicator for a display system" which would later be known as the computer mouse, the first public video-conference, and the concept of text-based hyperlinks and interconnected computers, all in a far-reaching presentation that was later called "the mother of all demos" before 1,000 colleagues in San Francisco in 1968.

Report: Apple planning to bring more iPhone sales to Apple Stores
Apple CEO Tim Cook is said to have told top retail managers in a secret meeting that the company would like to "equalize" the difference between the percentage of customers that come to Apple retail stores for iPhone repairs versus iPhone sales. The move, reported by unnamed sources, would encourage more customers to use the Apple retail presence to buy iPhones (where currently only 20 percent of buyers do) through the use of direct trade-in offers and other incentives. The recent addition of the iPhone to Apple's "Back to School" promotion was allegedly the first step in the plan.

Apple patents: Waze-like navigation, self-adjusting earphones
The US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has published new patents for Apple as they do nearly every day; two of particular interest may foretell new services and new products from the company. The first is method for generating car travel routes based on crowd-sourced data on real-time traffic conditions and user preference, while the other describes a set of earphones that can adjust audio output levels based on how tight a seal the earphones have at a given moment.

Apple may face obstacles with 'iWatch' trademark in US, UK, China
After reports of Apple's trademarking of the term "iWatch" in a number of countries, it has been discovered that the name has already been trademarked for some time in the US, the UK and, in what could be a troubling development, China. In fact, China has previously trademarked both the term "iWatch" and "iWatching," reports Chinese news journal Sina Tech. In the US, a company that was trying to raise funds to manufacture a smartwatch (but was unsuccessful) already trademarked the name, while the UK trademark is used for a monitoring smartphone app.

First look: Numbers for iCloud
In past two days, we have taken a "first look" at Pages for iCloud and Keynote for iCloud. Both are great examples of Appleís software-making prowess, and reinforce Apple CEO Tim Cookís recent assertion that it remains ëlaser focused on product innovationí. Not being one for working with numbers, I was not particularly looking forward to looking more closely at Numbers. NTT DoCoMo 'lifestyle system' holding up iPhone sales
Efforts at building a "lifestyle system" are why NTT DoCoMo has yet to pick up the iPhone, CEO Kaoru Kato tells Reuters The carrier normally has apps pre-installed on its phones in order to support integrated services, but Apple has always blocked carriers from making any modifications to iOS. T-Mobile tweaks iPhone 5 pricing schemes
The US branch of T-Mobile has quietly adjusted its pricing scheme for the iPhone 5, reports note. Since July 3rd, down payments have been lowered by $4, bringing costs to $146 for 16GB, $246 for 32GB, and $346 for 64GB. The monthly equipment charge has been raised by a dollar however, leaving the iPhone 5 as much as if it had been bought unlocked through an Apple Store.

Ubisoft has announced that it will be releasing Prince of Persia The Shadow and the Flame on mobile devices later this month. Native Mega apps coming soon to iOS, Windows
Cloud storage service Mega is in the "final stages" of developing native apps for iOS and Windows, according to an official blog post. The company yesterday released an Android app which supports uploading, downloading, and sharing files, folder management, and Dropbox-style automatic camera sync. Mega hasn't said what features the iOS and Windows apps will have, but the iOS title will likely have to limit some features to satisfy Apple rules.

Irish gov't votes against questioning Apple, Google over taxes
The Irish parliament has rejected a motion to allow a Subcommittee on Global Taxation to call representatives from corporations like Apple and Google to testify, according to reports. Pearse Doherty, a member of the Joint Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform tried to get the motion passed earlier this week, but was denied. The Subcommittee is considering how foreign companies exploit Irish tax laws to avoid paying fair taxes in Ireland or elsewhere.

The market for iOS speaker docks is sharply divided these days, and it's all Apple's fault. By switching to the new Lightning format last fall, it forced accessory makers to cater either to the broadest market of Apple devices -- which still use 30-pin connectors -- or the bleeding edge. Soundfreaq's Sound Step Lightning is of course aimed mostly at new hardware, but also takes something of a shotgun approach by including Bluetooth, USB, FM, and auxiliary inputs to boot. In our review, we'll see if the Sound Step holds up in terms of quality, not just support.

FCC formally approves Clearwire, Sprint, Softbank puchase chain
As expected, the FCC has officially given the green light to the Softbank purchase of Sprint and the corresponding Sprint purchase of ClearWire. The statement from acting FCC chairwoman Mignon Clyburn said that the deal serves the public interest and will "accelerate the deployment of mobile broadband services and enhance competition."

Square Stand credit card terminal coming to Apple Stores next week
Square, the company that has offered various credit-card payment systems for Apple's mobile devices, is now partnering with the iPhone maker to bring a new Point-of-Sale (POS) system to market that will be featured in Apple retail stores. The Square Stand turns an iPad into both a credit-card terminal and full POS system that works with Square's Register app and external devices such as cash drawers, receipt printers and barcode scanners along side the payment card reader. The $300 device will begin shipping on July 8 from Square's website, and be available for sale at Apple's US stores on Jul

Report: Apple testing local dictation feature in iOS 7 betas
Code found inside the iOS 7 beta by a researcher has revealed that Apple is at least experimenting with the idea of supporting offline dictation abilities, similar to the current dictation available on the iPhone 4S and 5 but without the need to do offline processing on Apple's servers. Currently, dictation software on iOS (either from Dragon Dictation or the built-in dictation) relies on back-end cloud processing and thus an Internet connection, which can sometimes mean delays and unwanted (albeit tiny) amounts of data usage. Apple Stores to Sell Square Stand Point-of-Sale System [iOS Blog]
Apple Retail Stores will begin offering Square's iPad-based point-of-sale system, Square Stand, on July 9, reports 9to5Mac.
