Square Enix announces Final Fantasy Tactics S, coming soon to iOS
Square Enix has launched a Japanese site for an upcoming mobile game called Final Fantasy Tactics S, and it sounds intriguing. Final Fantasy Tactics, of course, is the excellent tactical strategy game based on Square's old Final Fantasy series, which arrived on iOS a little while ago. The "S" version appears to be a social version, which will have you fighting monsters tactically while your "clan" competes against others.

Samsung reportedly launching new 8-inch tablet in June, Galaxy S 4 Active in July
Samsung Gulf president Young Soo Kim reportedly made casual mention of an upcoming rugged take on the Galaxy S 4 at a press event earlier in the week, but left out any details. iMessage bug displaying some messages truncated, Twitter taking notice
A strange bug in Apple's iMessage service is manifesting itself. Messages of a certain length are rendering the final word of the text invisible (but still present) following sending the message to both sender and recipient. Two phrases induce the bug for some users -- "I could be the next Obama" followed by a space causes the display oddity. The phrase "the best prize is a surprise" also causes the odd display problem.

EVE Online dev reveals Oculus Rift-based space dogfighting 'experience'

At Apple's online store this week take advantage of price cuts on refurbished iPods and iPad minis. The refurbished, current-generation, 16GB iPod nano has been reduced by $20 to $129 and is available in yellow, silver, slate, green, purple, blue and pink. GateGuru for iPhone has been updated and greatly improved
I've been a fan of GateGuru since I first tried it in 2010. It's a travel app for the iPhone that provides a plethora of information of flights, airlines and airports. It's great having all of that in your pocket. The version 4.0 fixes some problems and makes GateGuru even better.

Bidding for coffee with Tim Cook breaks $550,000
Two days ago, we reported on a Charitybuzz auction which was auctioning off coffee with Apple CEO Tim Cook at Apple's headquarters. Since the 'item' first became available for bidding, the price to sit down with the Apple CEO has continued to rise to incredibly high levels.
At the time of this writing, there have currently been 78 bids with the leading bid now checking in at a whopping $560,000. Benefits from the auction will be going to the RFK Center for Justice & Human Rights. Note that Charitybuzz keeps 20% of each winning bid.

China continues to be an important driver of revenue growth for Apple
With Apple generating tens of billions of dollars in revenue each and every quarter, analysts have long been asking how Apple will be able to not only maintain, but increase its growth in the years to come.

Odd iMessage Bug Truncates Last Word of Certain Text Phrases
As noted by The Verge, a strange iMessage bug is causing the final word of certain phrases sent via Messages to an iPhone to be invisible to both the message sender and the recipient. Briefly: iPhone used to track Boston Bombers, Pantone iPad cases
According to several recent news reports, an iPhone's GPS chip was used to help track the Boston Bombers to Watertown. Time, the New York Times, and Boston.com all have reported that after the bombing the two suspects stole a Mercedes and proceeded to flee the crime. However, what the thieves didn't realize is that the car itself was equipped with an mbrace tracking system and that an active iPhone had been left inside. None of the sources directly mention Find My iPhone, but it is likely that the device finding service played a part in the location of the stolen car.

The "catch" in T-Mobile's iPhone plan
Washington state Attorney General Bob Ferguson isn't happy with T-Mobile's recently-instituted plans to replace the traditional two-year contract for an iPhone with an installment plan. Ferguson's main beef with the magenta network? Customer Loyalty Could Drive iPhone Market Share Gains for Years
Apple's market share of the worldwide smartphone market may have slipped, but a new Yankee Group survey (via AllThingsD) shows some promising data points for the company. In a survey of 16,000 U.S. smartphone users, the company found 91 percent of iPhone owners plan to purchase another iPhone when it's time to upgrade, while for Android the number is just 76 percent. And, three quarters of those looking to switch from Android plan to buy an iPhone. Wavii confirms purchase by Google, shuts down natural-language service
The Seattle-based newsfeed company Wavii has closed, after confirming earlier reports that Google has bought the company. App Store gains 'Learn More About In-App Purchases' section
Apple has added a "Learn More About In-App Purchases" section to the App Store, AppAdvice observes. Tapping on the option explains what in-app purchases do, and the way the in-app purchase scheme works, specifically pointing out that while an Apple ID password is needed for an initial purchase, a 15-minute window exists during which more things can be bought without re-authorizing. Apple also places an emphasis on the Parental Controls menu under Settings, where people can turn off access to in-app purchases entirely.

Paytouch: Zahlen via Fingerabdruck

Sichererer geht immer. Die aus Barcelona stammenden Paytouch haben bei der Next Web Conference ihr System zur Zahlung via Fingerabdruck vorgestellt, dass einen Kreditkarten mit seinen Fingern verbinden lässt, und einen so - bislang geht das nur im Ushuaia Ibiza Beach Hotel - den nächsten Drink ordern lässt. Damit soll man die Kreditkarte dann sicher im Safe lassen können, und obendrein ohne lästiges Zücken von Hartplastik auf natürlichere Weise zahlen dürfen. Paytouch verlangt natürlich Komission. Intel verspricht Android Touchscreen Notebooks für 200 Dollar
Diese Aussage von Dadi Perlmutter (Executive Vice President bei Intel sollte Microsoft zu denken geben: Notebooks werden bald 200 Dollar kosten, aber die meisten davon werden Android sein, nicht Windows 8 Autsch. CEO Otellini hatte schon letzte Woche von 200 Dollar Touchscreen PCs geredet, jetzt ist klar, die ersten in dieser Preismarge werden wohl auf Android laufen. iPad-Marktanteil sinkt unter 50 Prozent
Das Unternehmen «Strategy Analytics» hat die neusten Zahlen zu den globalen Tablet-Verkäufen publiziert. Zum ersten Mal sank der Anteil des iPads am globalen Tablet-Markt auf unter 50 Prozent. Insgesamt wuchs der globale Tablet-Markt im ersten Quartal 2013 im Vergleich zum Vorjahr um 117 Prozent auf 40.6 Millionen verkaufter Tablets.
Apple lieferte den Zahlen von «Strategy Analytics» zufolge 19.5 Millionen iPads aus, was einem Marktanteil von 48.2 Prozent entspricht. Im Vorjahresquartal lieferte Apple lediglich 11.8 Millionen iPads aus, kam damit aber auf einen Marktanteil von 63.1 Prozent. Trotz der Abnahme des Marktanteils stieg die Anzahl der verkauften iPads um beachtliche 65.3 Prozent an. Apple stock buyback loan expected to save company money on taxes
Apple's plan to take out a loan for its $60 billion stock buyback is about saving taxes, notes the Washington Post. Although the company has $145 billion in cash reserves, roughly two-thirds of that is situated outside the US, and Apple has so far avoided repatriating the money in order to bypass a 35 percent tax rate. Taking out a loan for $60 billion means the company must still pay interest, but this is offset by not having to pay out dividends on the shares it's reclaiming.

Unsere Kollegen in den USA haben sich ein Google Glass gesichert und Tim Stevens hat eins bekommen (bzw. gekauft). Er konnte sich zwar keine Brillen-Farbe aussuchen, aber hatte zumindest die Wahl zwischen Dunkel-, Hell-Grau und Weiss. Natürlich wurde die erste U-Bahnfahrt zum Konversationsstarter, wenn er es auch noch nicht über sich bringen konnte, wahllos sein gegenüber zu filmen. Textual celebrates three years and version 3.0 with a $3 sale
Textual is a popular, lightweight IRC client for the Mac from Codeaux. Now three-years-old, the app was recently updated to version 3.0. To celebrate these milestones, the developers have dropped the price of Textual to US$3.
The latest version of Textual has a long changelog that includes new commands for encrypted chat and support for new scripts like moto that'll give you easy access to commonly used emoticons. Apple Backtracks on Planned Changes to VPN On Demand Behavior on iOS Devices
Earlier this month, we reported that Apple had announced upcoming changes to the behavior of VPN On Demand for devices running iOS 6.1 or later. The changes, which were planned to be deployed in a software update later this month, were necessitated by a $368 million judgment against Apple in a patent lawsuit brought by VirnetX. Virtual private networking (VPN), which is most commonly used by corporate users to access company networks, allows a user to securely connect to a private network via public networks as if his or her device were directly on the private network.

Spendenaktion: Ins Café mit Tim Cook
Auf der Auktions-Plattform «CharityBuzz» hat jeder, der über das nötige Kleingeld verfügt, die Möglichkeit, ein Treffen mit Apples CEO Tim Cook zu ersteigern. Bei dieser Auktion kann ein Treffen mit Tim Cook für maximal zwei Personen ersteigert werden, welches am Apple Hauptsitz stattfinden wird. Keine Frage, die Pocket Cinema Kamera von Blackmagic kann einiges. Die Ankündigung der Kamera mit Super-16 Cinema 1080HD Sensor, CinemaDNG RAW Aufnahmen, und Micro Four Thirds Anschluss, die im Juli für 995$ rauskommen soll, war erst letzten Monat. Und jetzt hat John Brawley einen ersten Demofilm veröffentlicht auf dem man die Qualitäten der Kamera ganz gut sehen kann, auch wenn es natürlich trotz Vimeo-HD komprimiert wurde. id America's Metropolitan in-ear headphones offer comfort, great sound and a bargain price
I am not a fan of the Apple EarPods that come with the iPhone 5, so when id America sent a pair of their new Metropolitan In-Ear Headphones (US$29.95) I was eager to give them a try.
My main complaint with the EarPods is that they refuse to stay in my ears, preferring instead to pop out at inopportune times during important phone calls. Then again, I've never been fond of in-ear headphones either, since they're usually quite uncomfortable. But my frustration with the EarPods was enough to make me give the Metropolitans a try.

Patent: Dient das iPhone bald als Autoschlüssel?
Am Donnerstag veröffentlichte das US Patent- und Markenamt ein Patent von Apple, welches eine neue iPhone-Funktion beschreibt, mit welcher das iPhone zum Autoschlüssel werden könnte.
Apples Patent beschreibt eine Technologie, mit welcher das iOS-Gerät mit der Hilfe von Bluetooth mit einem Fahrzeuge kommuniziert. Dabei bekommt das Hauptgerät die Zugangsdaten für das Fahrzeug und kann danach die freigeschalteten Funktionen des Autos drahtlos steuern. Das Auto konnte so mit dem iPhone aufgeschlossen und später mit einem Knopfdruck gestartet werden.
Gemäss der Patentbeschreibung wäre es auch möglich, einem zweiten oder dritten Gerät die Zugangs-Autorisation zu gewähren. Bei diesen sekundären Geräten könnte der Hauptnutzer allerdings entscheiden, ob er den Zugang zum Auto beschränken will oder nicht.

Quartartal waren 216,2 Smartphones, immerhin 51,6%. Ein Jahr zuvor waren es nur 37,9%. Und auch in den Konstellationen der Marken bei den Smartphones tut sich etwas. WWDC 2013 in 2 Minuten ausverkauft
Wie am Mittwoch angekündigt, wurde gestern Abend der Ticket-Verkauf für Apples diesjährige Entwicklerkonferenz eröffnet. Um 19 Uhr Schweizer Zeit startete der Ticket-Verkauf — zwei Minuten später war der Event bereits ausverkauft.
Das war aber nicht immer so: Die WWDC findet bereits seit 1983 jährlich statt. Erstmals ausverkauft war sie erst 2008 — jedoch erst nach mehreren Wochen. 2010 dauerte es bereits nur noch 8 Tage, 2011 unter 12 Stunden und im vergangenen Jahr war die WWDC in weniger als 2 Stunden ausverkauft. Die zwei Minuten, die es nun gestern brauchte, bis der Event ausverkauft war, zeigt vor allem eines: Apples «Weltweite Entwicklerkonferenz» ist viel zu klein. Etwa 5000 Besucher werden sich vom 10. bis 14. Juni im Moscone Center in San Francisco versammeln. Apple baut die verlässlichsten Windows-Notebooks
In einer dreimonatigen Studie sammelte das Unternehmen «Soluto» Daten über die Performance von insgesamt 150’000 Notebooks mit Microsofts Windows als Betriebssystem. In die Studie flossen Daten über Abstürze, die Boot-Zeit und andere Parameter ein, was Rückschlüsse auf die Zuverlässigkeit der einzelnen Notebooks zulässt.
Wenn man den Daten des Unternehmens Glauben schenkt, dann baut Apple das verlässlichste Windows-Notebook. An der Spitze der Notebook-Liste liegt das 13-Zoll-MacBook-Pro aus dem Jahr 2012. Dicht darauf folgt das Acer «Aspire E1-571», welches mit einem Preis von 429 US-Dollar allerdings mehr als die Hälfte günstiger ist als das MacBook Pro. Bereits auf dem sechsten Platz folgt das 15-Zoll-Retina-MacBook-Pro, welches mit einem Preis von 2’199 US-Dollar das mit Abstand teuerste Notebook im Vergleich war.

The first calendar quarter of the year has seen a sea change in the cellphone industry: for the first time worldwide, smartphones made up the majority of phones sold. Apple debuts one-minute iPhone ad: 'Photos Every Day'
A new TV ad for Apple's iPhone has debuted, a departure from the recent short "showcase" ads that highlighted apps -- instead spending a full minute extolling the virtues of the iPhone's use as a camera through gorgeous vignettes of people taking pictures. As pointed out at the end of the spot, "every day, more photos are taken with the iPhone than any other camera." Instapaper bought by Digg owner Betaworks, app to continue
Popular Mac punditry figure, developer and publisher Marco Arment has announced that he has sold a majority share of his web-article saving and syncing app Instapaper to Digg owners Betaworks. Under the deal, Betaworks will "take over the operations, expand its staff and develop it further," says Arment, while he will continue advising the project "indefinitely." Facebook has purchased Parse, a service that provides a cloud-based set of mobile services and development tools. This news comes on the heels of last week's Mobile Developer Conference where Facebook introduced tools making it easier to implement Open Graph on mobile along with the release of Facebook SDK 3.5. Facebook buys mobile developer tool provider Parse
According to Facebook, the company has just acquired Parse, giving it a platform for back-end tools for mobile developers. Facebook calls the size of the deal "not material" to the acquisition, but reports place the deal between $80 and $95 million. Parse ownership claims that it had many corporate suitors, but chose Facebook because the social network fit the ethos of the startup better than the other companies involved.

Various tweets and blog posts from developers who tried -- and failed -- to snap up Worldwide Developer's Conference (WWDC) tickets in the scant two minutes they were available from Apple this morning indicate that the company is contacting some of those turned away to offer some tickets to the event. The "second chance" calls are unlikely to be made to all developers, and so the company has already announced that videos of all the sessions will be made available to registered developers as the conference progresses.

Samsung posts slight profit drop to $7.9 billion, still beats street
Samsung Electronics today announced quarterly revenues of 52.87 trillion won ($47.6 billion) for the first quarter ended March 31, 2013, a six percent decrease from the previous quarter. Consolidated operating profit for the quarter reached 8.78 trillion won ($7.9 billion), representing a one percent decline quarter-over-quarter. As she did in the first Apple vs. Samsung patent trial, Judge Lucy Koh is again requiring the companies to narrow their claims and limit the scope of their arguments against each other as both firms prepare for a second patent trial on different patent infringement arguments than those in the first trial, which Apple won handily but is currently on appeal. Samsung's official Q1 earnings show $6.4 billion in net profit
Samsung has released its Q1 2013 numbers and as it predicted a few weeks ago, business continues to boom. Operating profits are 8.78 trillion won as predicted, while net profit is up to 7.15 trillion won ($6.4 billion), up sharply from the same quarter last year when its net profit was 5.50 trillion won. Report: Electronic Arts laying off up to 10 percent of workforce
Layoffs are striking video game publisher Electronic Arts, for the second time in a month. According to reports, as many as one in ten employees have been axed from the company, making an estimated 800 people looking for work. Berlin Apple Store opens May 3
Residents of Germany's capital city, Berlin, will have their very own Apple Store to visit starting next Friday. On May 3, 2013, the Apple Store Kurfürstendamm Berlin will open at 5 PM local time. If past is prelude, early arrivals at the opening can expect clapping and cheering employees, a countdown, and free t-shirts.
The store is scheduled to have regular open hours of 10 AM to 8 PM Monday through Saturday, closed on Sundays. During the opening weekend the store has special hours -- on Friday, May 3, it will be open from 5 PM to 10 PM local time, on May 4 it will be open from 10 AM until 10 PM, and on Sunday, May 5 the store will be open from 1 PM until 6 PM.

Slayin soundtrack now available
I remain a big fan of Slayin, a little game that got released on the App Store a while ago, that compresses a full fantasy-style RPG into a fascinating little endless game. I think the game's mechanics (where you simply move back and forth across the screen, holding your weapon out in front of you, as you kill monsters and collect money and XP) are my favorite part about it, but the soundtrack's good as well. Circadia celebrates 100,000 downloads with new content
Circadia is a great game that I wrote about a little over a year ago -- it's put together by a developer named Kurt Bieg, and until now, it's basically just been sitting on the App Store waiting to be found. Amazon quarterly report shows growing sales, modest profits
Amazon today announced financial results for its first quarter that ended March 31. The company reports that net sales increased 22 percent to $16.07 billion in the first quarter, compared with $13.18 billion in first quarter 2012. Despite the increased sales, Net income decreased 37 percent to $82 million in the first quarter, or $0.18 per share, compared with $130 million, or $0.28 per share in the first quarter of 2012.
