Twitter to End Support for TweetDeck for iPhone on May 7 [iOS Blog]
As noted in March, Twitter is planning to end support for TweetDeck for iPhone, TweetDeck for Android, and TweetDeck AIR. In an update to its original blog post today, Twitter announced that the services will be shut off on May 7.TweetDeck AIR, TweetDeck for Android and TweetDeck for iPhone will be removed from their respective app stores and will stop functioning on May 7. Way back in 2010, TUAW reviewed one of the first connected health devices for the iOS ecosystem. AMD hires ex-Apple graphics chip designer Raja Koduri
AMD is hiring another former Apple chip designer, sources tell CNET. Raja Koduri was most recently Apple's director of graphics architecture, and will actually be returning to AMD, having once spent four years with them. He's expected to continue focusing on graphics technology, although what his new AMD job title will be is unknown. The hiring should be formally announced next week.

Graphics chip designer Raja Koduri heads back to AMD after four-year stint at Apple
Well, it looks like AMD had a bit of news up its sleeve that it chose not to drop during its earnings call yesterday. The Wall Street Journal has confirmed that famed graphics chip designer Raja Koduri is heading back to the company, which he left in 2009 to take on the graphics CTO role at Apple. Presumably, Koduri will again be performing some similar duties at AMD, but the company isn't offering any further details just yet apart from saying that it's "very pleased" about the move.

Status Board updated with bugfixes, performance improvements
Panic's well-received Status Board app has been updated to version 1.1, and as you might imagine, it's mostly a bugfix update. The biggest issue fixed was probably a bug with sending standard video out, but that should be all taken care of according to Panic (sending HD video out still requires an in-app purchase). The Calendar List panel also deals with resizing much better, and there are now options for either Celsius or Farenheit listings for each Weather panel you have showing.

Survey shows early interest in Apple iWatch
An undercurrent of interest in an Apple "iWatch" already exists, even though the accessory is still just rumored, a new 451 Research survey indicates. The firm polled 1,713 people between March 4 and the 19th, of which most respondents were North American. The people were provided with a list of "probable" iWatch features, such as calls, texting, Siri, mobile payments, and health sensors. How Apple handles the data processed by Siri
After raising questions about Siri's privacy policy, Wired received a response from Apple spokeswoman Trudy Miller that confirmed Apple anonymizes Siri data and stores it for up to 24 months.
According to the Wired report, your iOS device records what you say to Siri and sends that clip to Apple's servers for analysis. As part of the voice recognition translation and response, Apple assigns a set of random numbers to the clip to identify the user from which it originated. This number is used during the back-end voice processing to make sure the response is sent back to the correct phone.

FAA approves Boeing 787 battery fix, will issue repair instructions next week
There's been a few weeks of silence following the Boeing 787's successful battery testing, but the FAA has finally weighed in on the proposed design tweaks. Today the organization approved Boeing's battery fix, which means the aircraft maker can take the next step in returning the fleet of 50 Dreamliners to the air. NoIdentity's ListBook (US$1.99) is a straightforward list compiler that looks great and has some well implemented features to help you get on top of all those lists and things to get done.
The universal app for iPhone and iPad lets you compile numerous lists and add items (or to-dos / tasks) to those lists. Raja Koduri, Apple's former director of graphics architecture, has been rehired by AMD as Corporate Vice President of Visual Computing after four years with Apple. Friday Favorite: Sock Puppets
Sock Puppets allows just about anyone to quickly and easily create short animated movies using not only sock puppet characters, but (via in-app purchases) aliens, politicians and Halloween characters. The adorable app is from a software company Smith Micro -- not exactly known for its consumer wares. Man who sold up to $40 million worth of counterfeit headphones gets two years in jail
A man accused of being one of the "most prolific sellers" of counterfeit electronics in the UK has just been sent down for two and a half years. Survey Shows Pre-Launch Demand for Apple's iWatch on Par With iPad

Penguin offers settlement in European Commission investigation into ebook price-fixing
The European Commission has been investigating Apple and major book publishers over ebook price-fixing since late 2011. Today the EC published a notice on its website inviting comments on Penguin's proposal to end its existing pricing agreements with Apple and refrain from entering into similar agreements for five years.

Adobe Labs veröffentlicht Lightroom 5 Beta (Video)

Adobe Labs hat gestern die offene Beta von Lightroom 5 für Mac und Pc veröffentlicht. Die neue Version bringt mehr Tools von Photoshop wie zum Beispiel einen verbesserten Reparaturpinsel, außerdem unter anderem automatische Bildausrichtung, Smart Previews, verbesserte Diaschauen mit Videointegration und mit dem Radial Gradient Tool eine Möglichkeit, Vignetteneffekte auch außerhalb der Mitte eines Fotos zu erzeugen. Die Gebilde, die das Designbüro NextOfKin Creatives aus Singapur auf der Tortona Design Week in Mailand präsentiert, würden wohl problemlos als Weltraum-Scooter für den nächsten SciFi-Streifen durchgehen, tatsächlich handelt es sich aber um zeitgeistige Inkarnationen des guten alten Schaukelpferdchens, nur dass hier Carbonfaser-Verbundstoff statt Holz zum Einsatz kommt und der traditionelle Pferdekopf verschiedenen Designerfantasien weichen musste.

Der scheidende CFO, Peter Klein, von Microsoft hat - wir hatten das gerüchteweise von allen Seiten schon gehört - bestätigt, dass es auch für kleinere Geräte bald Windows 8 geben wird. Sehr spezifisch war das nicht, aber wirklich alle erwarten Tablets unterhalb der bislang möglichen Größe von 10 Zoll. Und in den kommenden Monaten sollen da welche folgen. Ob es nun ein eigenes Produkt der Surface Reihe in diesem Format geben wird, ist allerdings völlig unklar.

Twitter Music: nicht in Deutschland, nicht für Android

Tja, wir hatten gehofft vielleicht mit Twitter Music doch noch in den Genuss einer vorsortierten Musikauswahl unserer zwitschernden Freunde zu kommen, aber leider ist Deutschland beim Start nicht dabei. USA, Kanada, Großbritannien, Irland, Australien und Neuseeland sind die einzigen Länder bislang. Und auch Android ist noch nicht mit einer App beglückt worden. Warum das passiert mag an den Rechten liegen, denn auch wenn die Musikstreamings letztendlich via iTunes (Vorhören) oder Rdio und Spotify (ganze Tracks) laufen, scheint es da noch Hürden zu geben. Viacom Klage gegen YouTube erneut gescheitert
In den USA ist die Frage ob YouTube gegen die Rechte von Viacom verstoßen habe, erneut abgewiesen worden. Die Auflagen des Digital Milennium Copyright Act sind laut dem Bezirksrichter Louis L. Stanton erfüllt worden. YouTube habe auf Anfrage von Viacom immer rechtzeitig Videos aus dem Index genommen, sie konnten auch nicht für den Inhalt ihrer User von 60.000 beanstandeten Videos verantwortlich gemacht werden mit dem Argument, sie hätten davon gewusst. Bewusstes Wegsehen war YouTube in diesem Fall nicht nachzuweisen. Es wird also erst Mal zum nächsten Gericht weitergezogen. Entscheidung nach dem Break im Volltext.

BGH: Legalität von eingebetteten Videos etc. unter Zweifel
Der Bundesgerichtshof hat Zweifel angemerkt, ob das gängige Einbetten von Videos und anderem nicht doch für die "Einbetter" zu einem Rechtsproblem werden könnte. In einem Gerichtsprozess rings um ein YouTube Video, ist dieses Grundproblem jetzt in den Fokus getreteten, und die bisherige Entscheidung des BGH ist: erst Mal auf Brüssel warten. Der Europäische Gerichtshof wird sich jetzt damit beschäftigen, und falls dort nicht anderweitig entschieden wird, könnte das BGH am 16. Mai Schluss machen mit der üblichen Praxis der Einbettung von Videos usw. Die Abmahnwelle stünde dann kurz vor einem Tsunami.

Mit nur 10,7 Millimetern Höhe und 870 Gramm ist es wirklich ein Fliegengewicht. Core i5 oder i/, 1080p Auflösung, 128 oder 256 GB SSD, 4 GB Ram sind die Spezifikationen für die schlankeste Variante. Siri Daten werden von Apple bis zwei Jahre gespeicher

Bevor die Datenschützer jetzt in Overdrive-Modus gehen. Es ist zwar so, dass Apple die Siri-Daten für bis zu zwei Jahre aufbewahrt, und das ist bei der eigenen Stimme irgendwie beunruhigend, aber scheinbar werden die Daten von Beginn an anonymisiert und haben weder Apple ID, noch E-Mail sondern nur eine Zufallsnummer die mit einem User assoziiert wird. Die soll nach 6 Monaten gelöscht werden. Das ganze wird aufbewahrt, wie Trudy Muller Wired versichert hat, um - was sonst - den Service zu verbessern.

To avoid EU antitrust case, Penguin offers to drop deals with Apple
In order to end an antitrust investigation by the European Commission, Pearson-owned book publisher Penguin has offered to drop e-book deals with Apple that inflated prices for Amazon and other vendors, Reuters reports. Penguin is the fifth publisher to settle, joining Simon & Schuster, HarperCollins, Hachette, and Macmillian, which along with Apple reached a settlement with the Commission in December.

Siri data stored for up to two years, Apple says
All the requests people have made through Siri are being stored on Apple servers for a period of up to two years, says Apple spokeswoman Trudy Muller. The statement comes in response to Wired inquiries about ambiguity in Siri's privacy policies, initially pointed out by American Civil Liberties Union lawyer Nicole Ozer. Muller insists that Apple is anonymizing the request data, and only collecting voice clips in order to improve Siri.

Macintosh icon designer talks about her work at Apple
Path has a nice interview with Susan Kare, a graphic designer and creator of the original Macintosh icons and typefaces that so many of us are familiar with. Kare reveals that she first came to work at Apple with the title "Macintosh Artist." She got the job through a high school friend, Andy Hertzfeld, who Apple history buffs will know was one of the inventors of the original Macintosh.

Man who sold up to four million counterfeit headphones gets two years in jail
A man accused of being one of the "most prolific sellers" of counterfeit electronics in the UK has just been sent down for two and a half years. Over 4,000 KiRFs, mainly consisting of knock-off Sennheiser and Monster headphones, were found at Michael Reeder's address, with a value of around £250,000 ($400,000). For first time ever BBC iPlayer watched on more tablets than smartphones
The BBC has released its March 2013 BBC iPlayer Performance Pack, which breaks down the viewing habits of those using the company's iPlayer video streaming service. For the first time ever, BBC iPlayer views on a tablet, like the iPad, outpaced views on smartphones, like the iPhone. Though tablets only won by 200,000 views, the results are significant as it shows that tablet adoption is increasing -- good news for Apple, as its iPad is clearly the world's dominant tablet even as it's seeing heavy competition to its iPhone in the smartphone market.

Chinese web portal simplifies access to pirated App Store titles
A Chinese website, 7659.com, is providing access to pirated iOS apps, reports observe. The site functions as a portal for software called KuaiYong, which is promoted as a supposed bulk licensing authorization tool for distributing free software, and a way of introducing Chinese people to the iTunes system. While KuaiYong dates back to 2012, the website appears to be new, and still requires KuaiYong to actually download the pirated content.

Chitika's March Tablet Update shows iPad usage share rising, still dominating competition
Chitika, the online advertising network, has released its latest Chikita Insights usage share data report for tablets for the March, 2013, period.
According to the company, based on U.S. and Canadian tablet ad impressions running through the Chitika Ad Network, the iPad still overwhelming dominates web traffic on tablets, at 81.9%. In fact, the iPad has seen its first month-on-month growth in web traffic share since December, 2012, a 1.4% basis points increase since February. Chitika partially attributes this growth to Apple selling refurbished 4th generation iPad and iPad minis at a discount beginning in mid-March, 2013.

Apple has revealed that Siri data is stored on the company’s servers for up to two years. Apple spokeswoman Tracy Muller noted the data is anonymized, and the voice clips are only collected to improve Siri. FB Unlimited Chat Heads: Chat Heads Limitierung in Facebook App aufheben [Cydia]

Apple verkauft 5% aller Computer — macht damit 45% aller PC-Gewinne
Asymco hat in dieser Woche eine neue Studie veröffentlicht, in welcher die Umsätze und Gewinne der grössten Computer-Hersteller der Welt im Fokus stehen. Für die Studie hat das Unternehmen die Umsatz- und Gewinnzahlen der Unternehmen sowie die Verkaufszahlen, welche von Gartner errechnet und geschätzt worden sind, zusammengenommen und analysiert.
Bei der Auswertung der Zahlen zeigt sich ein ähnliches Bild wie bei den Smartphones und Tablets. Obwohl Apple mengenmässig deutlich weniger Geräte absetzt als die Konkurrenz, erreicht der Konzern mit ihnen einen überdurchschnittlichen Gewinn. Im vierten Quartal 2012 generierte Apple demnach 45 Prozent der Gewinne, welche im Computer-Markt erzielt worden sind. Dabei verkauft Apple lediglich 5 Prozent aller Computer und kommt im weltweiten Ranking der grössten Computer-Hersteller nicht einmal in die «Top 5». A pair of new studies have found that, even years after they were first introduced and months since the latest models debuted, Apple's iOS platform and its iPad tablet are actually growing their share in two key metrics: the iPad and iPhone are actually taking usage share away from Android in the US, and the iOS platform has increased its dominance in mobile ad spending, a key metric for developers. Nachdem es über mehrere Wochen Spekulationen und Gerüchte über einen Musik-Dienst von Twitter gab, wurde gestern Twitter #music offiziell lanciert. Der Dienst lässt sich mit einer speziellen App oder über das Web nutzen.
Twitter #music soll das Entdecken neuer und interessanter Musik vereinfachen und zeigt derzeit im Twitter-Universum populäre Künstler und Songs an. In der Rubrik «Popular» werden die derzeit populärsten Songs und Künstler präsentiert, während in der Rubrik «hidden talent found in tweets» auf Neuentdeckungen aufmerksam gemacht wird. Somit könnte der neue Dienst zum Sprungbrett für junge und talentierte Künstler werden.
Twitter schlägt in der Kategorie «#NowPlaying» dem Nutzer auch Songs vor, welche seine Freunde gerade hören und in der Kategorie «Suggested» werden die Songs gebündelt angezeigt, welche von seinen Lieblingskünstlern stammen.

ACLU files FTC complaint over safety of old versions of Android
A US Federal Trade Commission filing made by the American Civil Liberties Union is asking the regulatory agency to investigate cellphone carriers slow updates to newer versions of Google's Android operating system. The ACLU claims that the reticence to upgrade has left many smartphone users with dangerously out of date and unsafe versions of vital software, putting users at risk for identity theft and other cyber crimes.

For AT&T and Verizon, all new smartphone growth coming from iPhone
An analysis by London-based tech and telco analyst Benedict Evans has compiled statistics for US smartphone sales from the two largest carriers -- AT&T and Verizon -- and concluded that all new growth in the past two years from both carriers has come as a result of the iPhone. By comparison, Android sales have remained basically flat since at least 2011, with an actual drop in the most recent quarter. The analysis reinforces the notion that Android and iOS customers are entirely different groups, and should be marketed to differently.

Macintosh Icon Designer Reflects On Her Work at Apple

Verizon activates 4M iPhones in the quarter, split evenly between 3G and 4G models
Verizon reported its earnings for the opening quarter of 2013 and announced that it activated 4 million iPhones. This figure is up year-over year, but down from the previous quarter which saw 6.2 million iPhone activations. This decline is expected as sales generally fall in the first quarter of the year. Within the 4 M iPhone activations, Verizon confirmed that 2 million were 4G LTE models (iPhone 5) and 2 million were 3G only models (iPhone 4/4S).

Blackstone reportedly backs out of Dell deal, leaves bidding war to Icahn and company founder

Judge reaffirms DMCA protection for YouTube and Google
After a three-year gap, the judge that ruled against Viacom declaring that YouTube was protected by the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, has reaffirmed his earlier ruling. Bēm Mobile Speaker will have you beaming

2013 CISPA passes House vote despite veto threat
The US House of Representatives has voted in favor of the 2013 revision of the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act (CISPA) bill. The proposed legislation passed 287-to-127, widening the margin from the 248-to-168 House vote in 2012 for the initial version, however the bill is nonetheless expected to encounter more resistance in the Senate and a possible presidential veto.

Just after updating both Aperture and iPhoto with various bug fixes, Apple has issued an update for its Digital Camera Raw Compatibility plug-in, which supplements both programs with additional support for Raw files produced by various cameras. The program, now at version 4.05, adds support for four new cameras, all from Fuji: the Fujifilm X20, X100S, X-E1 and X-Pro1. The download is 6MB in size and requires either 10.7.5 or higher for OS X Lion and 10.8.3 or higher for OS X Mountain Lion.

NASA's Kepler discovers three potentially habitable planets
NASA's Kepler telescope has discovered three "super-Earth-size" exoplanets that are close enough to their stars to make them possibly suitable for water. Two of the planets (Kepler-62e and Kepler-62f) orbit a K2 dwarf estimated to be around 7 billion years old. Measuring at two-thirds the size of our sun, this cosmic lantern is orbited by a total of five planets, three of which are too close to be habitable for life. Rumor: Amazon's Goodreads purchase cancelled a possible Apple partnership
The Wall Street Journal says that before Amazon's purchase of the Goodreads service earlier this year, Apple was planning to possibly integrate the social reading-recommendation service into its own iBookstore. Apple and Goodreads, says the WSJ, had been talking for a year or more about combining Goodreads' social ratings for books into the iBooks app directly, but of course Amazon's purchase put the kibosh on any such team-up. LinkedIn for iOS updated to v6.0, overhauls design
