Intel announces faster next-gen Thunderbolt
Engadget is reporting that Intel has introduced the next generation of the Thunderbolt interface at the NAB conference. The update promises data transfer rates of 20 Gbp in each direction on Thunderbolt's two channels, twice the speed of the current 10 Gbp generation.The demonstration Engadget witnessed showed the new Thunderbolt running at 1,200 Mbps, which is simply remarkable. Intel says the new Thunderbolt is also capable of simultaneous 4k video file transfer and display.

California Court Rules Anti-Texting Laws Apply to Checking Maps While Driving [iOS Blog]
According to a court ruling from the California Court of Appeals (via Orin Kerr), using a mobile phone such as Apple's iPhone to check or update a mapping or GPS program violates the state's distracted driving law. Vehicle Code 23123, aka the distracted driving law, was developed to prohibit drivers from texting and making handheld calls with a mobile phone. The ruling came in late March after a driver was cited for driving a motor vehicle while using a wireless telephone. The driver, who was accessing the phone for directions, argued that he had not been using the phone for talking or texting, which led to the newly exp

Improved Thunderbolt tech jumps to 20 Gbps, supports 4K video
Intel has introduced an improved version of its Thunderbolt interface, doubling the transfer speeds to 20 Gbps upstream and downstream. With a booth at the National Association of Broadcasters expo this week, Intel notes that its next-generation Thunderbolt controller, codenamed Falcon Ridge, will support 4K video file transfers while simultaneously driving a 4K display.

Rumor has Mac Pro replacement being announced in April
Apple is planning to announce a next-generation Mac Pro -- or a replacement -- sometime this month, a source tells MacDailyNews. No other information has emerged, but the website claims that the source has been right about other Apple products in the past. It did correctly predict the renaming of iPhone OS to iOS, and prices for iCloud subscriptions.

DevJuice: Three useful Xcode tricks
Some Xcode challenges seem to crop up repeatedly. Today, I thought I'd share a few solutions that you might find helpful to integrate into your workflow.
Challenge: When you move an Xcode project to a new folder, all your file references die.
Solution: Avoid those red "can't find" file references by changing the way each group defines its location. If you're pulling in a suite of code from another folder, select it and open the File inspector (View > Utilities > Show File Inspector). Choose "Absolute Path" from the Path pop-up.

Engadget reports that Intel has announced the next generation of Thunderbolt, promising throughput of 20 Gbps in each direction -- twice as fast as the current protocol, allowing simultaneous 4K video file transfer and display The new generation of Thunderbolt, code-named 'Falcon Ridge', will be backwards compatible with current-generation cables and connectors. Intel expects production to ramp up in 2014. Bloomberg: Next Xbox features an AMD x86 chip, making backwards compatibility difficult
The Xbox 360 successor may not support Xbox 360 game discs, according to a Bloomberg report. The issue arises from the as-yet-unannounced console's chip, which allegedly comes from AMD and, like the PlayStation 4, uses x86 architecture (like a PC). Resultantly, backwards compatibility would have to be handled on a software level through emulation, as game discs won't play (like with Microsof't last console). Marvel Once Again Offers Up 700 Free First Issue Comics [iOS Blog]
Back in March, Marvel announced that it would give away 700 of its No. 1 digital comics as part of a South by Southwest promotion. Avid announces two iOS-compatible audio interfaces at NAB
Avid announced a pair of iOS-compatible audio interfaces at NAB today. The Avid Fast Track Solo (US$179) and Fast Track Duo ($299) connect directly to the iPad to provide high-quality I/O for iOS apps that support recording, and also include licenses of Pro Tools Express for Mac and PC.
The Solo provides a mic preamp and instrument input, while the Duo (image at top of post) includes dual mic preamps/instrument inputs as well as line-level inputs. The Fast Track line is designed for mobile and studio applications, and does not require an iPad Camera Connection kit to attach to an iPad.

We're live at NAB 2013 in Las Vegas!
It seems like we were in Sin City for CES just yesterday, but we're already back scouring the halls at the LVCC. This time, though, it's all about cameras; NAB 2013 promises to have plenty of fancy new equipment from big names such as Canon, RED and Sony. In fact, we already have some major news from the latter: Sony announced pricing for its 55- and 65-inch 4K TVs, and the MSRPs are well below $10,000. Red Motion mount eliminates shutter judder, we go eyes-on (video)
Red announced its new Motion lens mount prior to opening its booth at NAB, and now we've had a chance to see this guy in action. The mount, which is compatible with the company's Epic and Scarlet cameras, is meant to fix the CMOS rolling shutter problem. The Motion includes a liquid crystal shutter that's placed in front of the main sensor and is timed to engage when the sensor is fully open. Avid announces Pro Tools 11, iOS-compatible hardware interfaces
Avid has announced Pro Tools 11, the next version of its high-end audio production software. The update concentrates mainly on speed; it for instance uses a new audio engine, which is said to offer "multiple times" the performance for Pro Tools 10. Along the same lines, the app has converted to 64-bit architecture, gained offline bounce and a low-latency input buffer, and enabled dynamic host processing, which should allow more simultaneous plugins.

App discovery service AppGratis pulled from Apple Store
AppGratis is an app that gives users a way to discover exciting new apps and get free apps every day. According to its developers, the app has over 10 million users worldwide. Sadly, AppGratis has been pulled from the App Store for reasons still unknown.
It could be that the existing app is crashing or taking advantage of a private API. However, back in October Apple added Clause 2.25 to the iOS developer guidelines stating that "Apps that display Apps other than your own for purchase or promotion in a manner similar to or confusing with the App Store will be rejected." In other words, the guidelines now prohibit exactly what AppGratis does.

RED starts offering Epic-M, Epic-X owners 6K Dragon upgrade
Red Camera is allowing users of its Epic-M and Epic-X cinematography cameras to upgrade the camera to the Dragon sensor from tomorrow, the company has announced. The upgrade, previously claimed by the manufacturer to have exceeded expectations after internal testing, will let the camera film at 6K resolution at up to 100fps, and provides three additional stops over the Epic M-X.

U.S. Patent Office withdraws primary objections to 'iPad mini' trademark application
As noted by MacRumors, The US Patent Office has withdrawn primary objections to Apple's 'iPad Mini' trademark application. The primary objections were raised last month when the USPTO deemed elements related to the "iPad mini" name as descriptive instead of contributing a unique name to a product.
But now a published office action letter from the USPTO confirms the objection has been withdrawn. It appears Apple will be granted a trademark on the "iPad mini" name as long as no other entities are found

Apple Hiring Software Engineer for AuthenTec Fingerprint Sensor Team in Florida
Apple yesterday posted a new job listing (via AppleInsider) looking for a software engineer to join its team of fingerprint sensor engineers from AuthenTec, which was acquired last year for $356 million. Apple refers to the job location as its "Melbourne Design Center" located in Melbourne, Florida, which is where AuthenTec was based, and is the only Melbourne-based position currently listed on Apple's job site. The position requires the ability to write "low-level code to configure and control hardware" and experience with firmware-hardware interaction.

Avid Announces Media Composer 7 and Pro Tools 11, iOS Compatible Recording Hardware
Avid today announced new versions of its flagship video editing and audio production applications Media Composer 7 and Pro Tools 11, as well as two new Mac- and iOS- compatible hardware interfaces for recording audio at home or on the road. In addition to a number of new features, Media Composer 7 receives a significant price cut, bringing the standard edition to $1000, down from $2500. It will be available in June. ProTools 11, which Avid says "represents a quantum leap in creative power", gains a redesigned audio engine and 64-bit architecture. Apple ad man Ken Segall takes issue with Apple's iPhone naming scheme
While serving as the creative lead of TBWA/Chiat Day, Ken Segall oversaw the creative direction of Apple's marketing efforts. Credited as the man who put the 'i' in iMac, Segall worked very closely with Steve Jobs and helped oversee a number of memorable Apple ad campaigns, including the award-winning Think Different campaign.

Anti-poaching lawsuit against Google, Apple and others denied class action status
In 2010, several high profile tech companies -- including Apple, Google, Adobe, Intuit, Lucasfilm, Intel and Pixar -- settled a suit with the U.S. Justice Department regarding anti-poaching agreements. The suit alleged that the aformentioned companies, from 2005 to 2009, agreed not to recruit employees from one another.
One year later, five software engineers filed a class action lawsuit against those same companies alleging that the anti-poaching agreements lessened their employment opportunities and ultimately affected their negotiation power, resulting in lower salaries.

Ein Bericht von CNET legt den Schluss nahe, dass Apple möglicherweise bereits im Sommer einen eigenen Musik-Streaming-Dienst auf den Markt bringen könnte.
Mit den beiden Musik-Labels «Warner Music» und der «Universal Music Group» sollen sich die Verhandlungen bereits im Endstadium befinden, wie ein Insider berichtet. Many of the photos we take have perspective problems, but there are not too many utilities for iOS the deal with it. The iPhone has a fairly wide angle lens, and as a result, pictures of city buildings, landscapes with lots of trees, almost anything with vertical lines can need some perspective correction.
Perspective Correct (U.S. $1.99) is a new app that deals with just this problem. You import a photo and then by swiping across the screen you can change vertical or horizontal distortion. A reader recently wrote to me with a problem. Apparently, Microsoft Outlook no longer contains the ability to create quote level chunks of text when replying to messages in plain text format. Why this functionality was removed, I can't say. But, with a little help from AppleScript and Automator, I was able to help the reader to add this functionality back via a Service. Better yet, the Service can be set up to work in any email client, or even systemwide in any app. Here's how you can do it

Digital Trends berichtet unter Berufung auf «beteiligte Personen», dass Google mit den Machern von WhatsApp seit etwa vier Wochen Verhandlungen führt, um das Unternehmen vollständig übernehmen zu können. SWISS zieht positive Bilanz zur Einführung des iPads für das Kabinenpersonal
Wie die Pendlerzeitung «20 Minuten» berichtet, ist das iPad für die SWISS eine Erfolgsgeschichte. Im Juni letzten Jahres gab die Schweizer Fluggesellschaft bekannt, ihre Maîtres de Cabine mit iPads auszurüsten — 650 Apple-Tablets sollen in den Flugzeugkabinen zum Einsatz kommen. Wie SWISS-Mediensprecherin Myriam Ziesack in einer ersten Bilanz verlauten lässt, habe sich die Investition für die SWISS in «vielerlei Hinsicht gelohnt».
Der Einsatz eines iPads statt einem Papier-Stapel habe mehrere Vorteile — zum einen falle der Papierkrieg, den die Kabinenpersonal-Leiter für jeden Flug zu bewältigen haben, weg. Zum anderen könne pro Person drei bis vier Kilogramm Papiergewicht eingespart werden. Die Gewichtsersparnis und damit die Treibstoffeinsparungen summieren sich schnell, so die SWISS.

Samsung im vergangen Quartal mit neuen Rekordzahlen
Früher als erwartet gab Apple-Konkurrent Samsung am Freitag seine vorläufigen Zahlen des vergangenen Quartals von Januar bis März bekannt. Mit ca. 8.7 Billionen Won bzw. 7.7 Milliarden US-Dollar lag der operative Gewinn höher als erwartet. Samsung konnte sich beim Gewinn gegenüber dem Vorjahr um 53 Prozent steigern. Auch beim Umsatz hat der Südkoreanische Konzern zugelegt: um 15 Prozent gegenüber dem Vorjahr auf ca. 52 Billionen Won bzw. 46 Milliarden US-Dollar. Das vergangene Quartal ist damit das beste erste Jahresquartal von Samsung bisher. Derart zulegen konnte Samsung wahrscheinlich vor allem durch kostengünstige Smartphones. Die Verkaufszahlen des Galaxy S III dürften im vergangenen Quartal durch gute Verkaufszahlen des iPhone 5 von Apple und dem Warten vieler Kunden auf den Nachfolger «Galaxy S 4» eingebrochen sein.

Apple-Aktie: Erneutes Wochenminus von über 4 Prozent
In den USA wurden im März nur 80’000 neue Arbeitsstellen geschaffen — so wenig wie seit 10 Monaten nicht mehr. Spekuliert wurde über 200’000 neue Jobs. Zwar sank die Arbeitslosenquote der vereinigten Staaten leicht auf 7.6 Prozent (die Quote war im Dezember 2008 zuletzt so tief), dies lag aber primär an Pensionierungen oder Wiedereinschulungen. Bereits am vergangenen Mittwoch machten Berichte über diese Zahlen die Runde, worauf viele Aktien in den USA Ende letzte Woche tauchten.
Goldman-Sachs-Analyst Bill Shope hat die Apple-Wertpapiere in der vergangenen Woche von der Goldman Sachs «Conviction List» gestrichen, auf welcher AAPL über 28 Monate gelistet war. Übernahme-Gerüchte: Google soll 1 Milliarde Dollar für WhatsApp bieten
Google ist angeblich an der Übernahme der Messaging-App WhatsApp interessiert. Laut einem Bericht der US-Webseite Digital Trends laufen die Verhandlungen zwischen beiden Parteien bereits seit fünf Wochen. iOS 7 concept video shows intriguing possibilities
With Scott Forstall out of the fray at Apple, having been replaced with Jony Ive, a lot of people are very excited to see what type of UI changes Apple may incorporate into iOS 7.
Recently, we reported on a number of rumblings which suggest that development on iOS 7 is running behind schedule. As a result, Apple has reportedly pulled engineers from its OS X team to assist with iOS development in an effort to ensure it's ready to go for WWDC later this Summer.

DevJuice: Provisioning portal redesigned, allows deletion of some App IDs
We've been hearing from various delighted developers this weekend responding to Apple's redesigned provisioning portal. And yes, you can now delete many (not all) App IDs from the portal.
The newer the ID, the more likely it seems to be that you'll be able to select it, configure its settings and click that all-too-welcome delete button.

Review: Amped Wireless REC10 600mW Compact Wi-Fi Range Extender
Everybody has them -- those pesky dead zones in the house or office where the Wi-Fi signal is weak or nonexistent. Apple designed the AirPort Express as a handy little plug-n-play network extender, but a good number of people find it to be problematic both in setup and in operation. TUAW recently received a compact Wi-Fi Range Extender from Amped Wireless -- the REC10 (US$79.99) -- and ran it through some tests to see how easy it was to set up and also how well it worked.

Sony announces $699 FMP-X1 4K media player and distribution service
Along with its new smaller (and cheaper) 4K TVs, Sony has announced its FMP-X1 4K media player and 4K video distribution service. Plans for both were first revealed at CES, however the official press release (included after the break) provides the full details, that it will be $699 and arrive preloaded with 10 4K films and shorts when it ships this summer.
