Walmart testing 'Scan & Go' iPhone self-checkout app, cashiers becoming endangered species

Reuters was tipped off to a survey that reveals Walmart, the world's largest retailer, is testing a new system that would allow customers to scan items with their iPhone then quickly pay at a self-checkout counter. The "Scan & Go" feature won't let you pay with your phone, at least not yet, but rather than scanning each item individually in line, shoppers will be able to quickly transfer their list to the kiosk and pay in one quick step. RIM details BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10: IT guys get a single web console for their various tools

We already knew that RIM was readying a new version of its BlackBerry Enterprise Server to ship alongside the first BB10 devices in early 2013. Today, the company detailed the package, formally known as BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10. The big story here is that already-existing IT tools like BlackBerry Mobile Fusion, BlackBerry Device Service and Universal Device Service will be accessible from a single web console. The company also clarified that BlackBerry Device Service and Universal Device Service can run off separate servers, or just one. WSJ: Amazon is building an ad-supported tablet

If you can't quite scrounge up the $200 it takes to buy a quality 7-inch slab these days, Amazon may have a solution for you: sell them your attention. According to the Wall Street Journal, the company plans to develop a ad-supported tablet that would display advertisements whenever the screen is turned on. Sound familiar? AU Optronics, LG making displays for 8-inch 'iPad mini'

A pair of recent leaks regarding the iPad mini Apple has allegedly been working on bring the device in clearer focus. Bloomberg says it has identified the suppliers of the display portion of the device, and that it will not sport the distinctive Retina-quality display that Apple has touted in recent products. Gmail advanced search gets autocomplete in 'from' and 'to' fields, three lab features become standard

Coming on the heels of Google announcing additional languages for Gmail search, the dev team out in Mountain View is rolling out a few more tweaks. For starters, when you use advanced search, you'll now see autocomplete predictions in the "from" and "to" fields. Google is also "graduating" three labs: Refresh POP accounts, Filter import / export and Navbar drag and drop. Nicht dass wir jetzt mehr wissen würde, aber es gibt ein erstes echtes Bild des neuen Nokia 820, das ja vermutlich noch am Ende der IFA, aber nicht in Berlin, vorgestellt werden wird. Bob Mansfield once again listed as SVP on Apple's site

Samsung's dual-display Windows 8 laptop and other prototypes, hands-on

See that? It's not your daddy's flip hybrid tablet -- it's the new dual-display laptop prototype from the fine people at Samsung. The body of the notebook is certainly in the vein of a MacBook Air or ultrabook, with slim metal slides that taper off into a point. The palm rests, meanwhile, are a brushed metal, with black chiclet-style keys above. On the bezel above the screen is a camera. The magic, however, doesn't happen until you close the thing, turning on a display on the hood. Yep, it's yet another attempt to capitalize on Windows 8's dual-nature. Apple demands Samsung injunction hearing be moved up

Apple, as expected, as taken a page out of Samsung's playbook and filed to have its injunction claims against eight Samsung products moved up in light of Samsung's September hearing on tossing out the current injunction against the Galaxy Tab 10.1. Currently, Apple -- the victor in its patent claims over Samsung -- would have to wait until early December to get injunctions on infringing Samsung products.

Briefly: Dropbox Experimental Edition update, iOS discounts

Dropbox has released a major update for its pre-release Experimental Edition software. The v1.5.27 release has been rebuilt using Python 2.7, which should result in improved performance, and includes new Retina-ready graphics. It is also bundled with a simple installer and offers support for Mountain Lion's Notification Center. As this is the first release of a major new build, Dropbox has stressed that users should backup all of their data before installing. One major issue has also already been found, resulting in slow startup times on OS X.

Open webOS now available to developers in beta

Just like that, HP is making good on its promise to release Open webOS in beta. The code is available today under the Apache 2.0 license, and is landing slightly ahead of schedule (HP long ago said the software would arrive in September.) All told, the beta release is comprised of 54 components, totaling more than 450,000 lines of code. As you'd expect, too, the desktop build incorporates all the elements released so far on Ubuntu. IFA 2012: Acer Aspire M3 Touch Ultrabook und V5 Touch

Filed under: Laptops Die beiden Aspire M3 Touch Ultrabook und V5 Touch, die Acer auf der IFA zeigt, sind weitestgehend die bisherigen Modelle nur für Windows 8 aufgepeppt mit Touchscreens, damit Windows 8 auch wirklich Spass macht (bzw. man sich nu ja nicht mit dem Desktop beschäftig). Der 15,6-Zoll Bildschirm mit Touch-Oberfläche auf dem M3 lässt den Rechner auf 22mm anwachsen und wiegt 2,3 Kilo. Der V5 bekommt 14- und 15-Zoll Bildschirme und auch hier ist es etwas schwerer geworden mit 2,1 bzw. 2,4Kg.

Renders, shmenders. According to Coolxap.com what you see above is a real-world prototype of the Nokia 820 -- aka Nokia Arrow. As well as some tantalizing hardware shots, we get a sneaky glimpse at that all important "About phone" page. All we can see, though, is that it's running Windows Phone 8 (shock) and has only 335MB of RAM? Though, being a prototype, that's likely to change. Filed under: Digitalkameras Auf der IFA zeigt Samsung nicht nur ihre erste Android Kamera, sondern auch eine Menge an Zubehör dafür. Neben fest montiertem Flash, professionellem Filmequipment, diversesten Hardcovern in bunten Farben gab es auch ein Mockup des drahtlosen Ladegerätes zu sehen. Preise oder ähnlicher Schnickschnack waren von den Mitarbeitern am Stand nicht zu erfahren. There have been persistent reports from a number of sources about shortages of the 27-inch iMac at resellers; now MacRumors is reporting that Apple's retail stores are experiencing short supplies of the popular all-in-one desktop computer. A survey of stock at the 249 Apple Stores in the U.S. through the "Personal Pickup" program shows that the two standard 27-inch configurations are out of stock at just about half of those stores. 120 stores are out of the 27-inch base model, and 135 stores have no current supply of the high-end 27-inch iMac. On Friday, a Japanese court gave Samsung a small boost when it ruled that the Korean company did not infringe on an Apple patent that covers media synchronization between a device and servers. Sharp's IGZO low-power, high-res display technology gets its time to shine at IFA

Alongside the slew of 90-inch TVs, Sharp also used this year's IFA to show off something a little less glamorous. Its IGZO technology (that's indium gallium zinc oxide, kids) was developed in conjunction with the Semiconductor Energy Laboratory. According to Sharp, the displays "have a significantly higher translucency [compared to traditional LCD TFT displays]. This improvement means that smaller or fewer LEDs are needed for the backlighting." The result is less power consumption for high-res displays and higher sensitivity on touchscreens, with far less noise to contend with.

IFA 2012: Lenovo IdeaPad Y und Z Serie

Neben dem IdeaPad U510 hat Lenovo auch noch neue Rechner in der Y-Serie. Die 14-Zoll Y400 und 15-Zoll Y500 mit Austauschbarer Festplatte oder doppeltem Graphik-Chip kommen mit Backlit-Keyboard und lassen sich bis Core i7 mit NVIDIA GeForce GT650M hochkonfigurieren. Zwar laufen sie mit Windows 8, aber auf Touch muss man hier leider verzichten, auch wenn das Touchpad auf Windows 8 optimiert worden ist. Maximum Festplattenspeicher ist 21TB und 16GB SSD-Cache, Maximum beim Arbeitsspeicher sind 16GB. Im Oktober sollen die beiden auf den Markt kommen. Die neuen Rechner der Z-Serie (Z400 und Z500) sind mit ca. 26 Millimeter etwas schlanker, haben nahezu identische Spezifikationen und kommen im November.

Foxconn, Sharp mull $1B spend to help Apple production

Facebook opens up user phone numbers, emails to advertisers

E-book settlement terms revealed: $69 million to be paid out

Book buyers in 49 states and five territories are poised to receive $69 million as a result of civil suit settlement accusing Hachette, HarperCollins, and Simon & Schuster of collusion with Apple, Macmillan, and Penguin. Photoshop, Lightroom to get support for Retina displays

Two of Adobe's signature image editing apps, Photoshop and Lightroom, are getting updates to support the Retina display in the MacBook Pro, the company has announced. Both upgrades will be free, but Adobe claims that the change "requires significant work by our product teams;" Photoshop CS6 will therefore only get a patch sometime this fall, while Lightroom 4 will get the tech "as soon as the work is complete." Creative Cloud subscribers should get earlier access to the Photoshop update than the public.
