Dolby Digital Plus coming soon to tablets and phones, we go ears-on (video)
Whenever we review tablets, the section on audio quality is usually short, and it usually goes something like this: "The quality is tinny and the volume is low, especially since the speakers are located on the back side." (Translation: "What did you expect, people?") That's a shame, given how tablets are supposedly ideal for content consumption. Fortunately, though, this is something Dolby's been working on. The company is bringing its Digital Plus technology to tablets, phones and laptops with the aim of enhancing sound quality, and also making movie dialog easier to make out. In the demo video

It's still hotter than the blazes here in Colorado, but there are starting to be some signs of cooler days ahead. But while the heat is still set on "high", I'll take the opportunity to show you some cool things that have come out of the minds of developers and manufacturers around the world.
I'd also like to take a quick poll of our viewers today (see poll below). Many of you are tired of the parade of interruptions from Ustream ads, although those ads are what enable us to broadcast for free. We have used YouTube before; their ads seem to be much less obtrusive and annoying. Microsoft bans use of Metro name in Windows Store apps
If Microsoft can't use the Metro name, no one else can. Not in its company-owned Windows Store, at least. News: Korean carriers SK, KT in talks with Apple over LTE
Korean carriers SK Telecom and KT are in talks to offer LTE service for Apple’s next-generation iPhone, according to a new report. Citing officials from the companies, the Korea Times reports that any such deal could require a change or addition to the handset’s supported LTE frequencies. Samsung to call 'one bullet to kill' witness on Friday
In its ongoing trial with Apple, Samsung is planning to call two witnesses known for arguing for high patent royalties, according to FOSS Patents. The most notable of these may be David Teece, a professor at the University of California, Berkeley, who recently testified on behalf of Motorola Mobility against Microsoft over the matter of H.264 video codec patents. Teece argued that a single standards-essential patent could be equal or greater in value than a large number of other patents relating to a standard, since it "takes only one bullet to kill."

Neues iPhone: Koreanische Provider in Verhandlungen für LTE-Support

Layover is a neat photo app for iPhone and iPad (US$0.99, universal) that sounds like it might be a travel app. It's not, yet "Layover" is a pretty good name for what it does.
The app lets you blend up to 5 photos. Masks and careful editing help you create a new, compelling image. This is the kind of sophistication you expect from pro apps like Photoshop, and it's interesting to see these features trickle down to the iPhone and iPad.

Judge in Apple-Samsung trial urges CEOs meet again
Two days after further narrowing the case between Apple and Samsung by removing three Samsung phones that aren't sold in the US from consideration for infringement and damages, US District Judge Lucy Koh has opted for a last-ditch request to try and settle the case. Today, she requested that both Apple's and Samsung's CEOs meet once again to try and resolve differences before the trial winds down and the competing claims are handed to the jury.

Judge Lucy Koh prompts Apple, Samsung CEOs to meet again
Ina Fried has been covering the Apple-Samsung patent trial for AllThingsD, and this morning she reported that Judge Lucy Koh has asked Apple CEO Tim Cook and Samsung executives Choi Gee-sung and Shin Jong-kyn to meet in an effort to strike a deal before the trial goes to jury.
Koh is quoted as saying "I see risk here for both sides if we go to a verdict." She went on to say that if Samsung and Apple have intellectual property positions in the smartphone and tablet worlds, then "message delivered." Koh's message to both parties? "It's time for peace."
The Apple and Samsung attorneys have agreed to arrange at least a phone meeting between the two parties, although

ROCCAT's new Kone Pure mouse streamlines things, while ISKU FX keyboard adds some color (hands-on)
ROCCAT's latest addition to its family of mice is the Kone Pure, toned down to 91 percent the size of the original Kone. Now both smaller and flatter, it's dropped the menu button above the four-direction scroll wheel, and that scroll wheel now goes only up and down. It's a trade-off, but ROCCAT has added a new 'easy shift' side trigger which it hopes will ameliorate that fall in the button-count. This acts as a mouse-based shift function and you can customize how all of the device's other buttons behave when the side-trigger is depressed.

Microsoft has no plans for retina Office apps
There's someone who's kicking sand out of the Retina display sandbox, and that company appears to be Microsoft. Even though Microsoft boasted that Office for Mac is ready for OS X Mountain Lion, Macworld is reporting that users with Retina-display MacBook Pros are describing a less-than-stellar experience when using Office for Mac on one of these machine.
This isn't a surprise, as about the only current Mac feature that Office for Mac has is Gatekeeper, and I think it's largely more to keep the average user having a panic attack that Office isn't working with Gatekeeper turned on. Lack of other features

Sixth Circuit rules that law enforcement doesn't need a warrant to track your phone
If you go through tin foil like there's no tomorrow (or because you think there's no tomorrow), you might want to head down the store. A recent 2 - 1 ruling by the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals has determined that law enforcement agencies can obtain cellphone location data, without the need for a warrant. The decision comes after a defendant in a drug-related case claimed protection from his phone's GPS location data being used under the Fourth Amendment. Toshiba stoppt Pläne für Windows-RT-Tablets vorerst

Nokia and Microsoft announce September 5th Windows Phone event
We just received an invite from Nokia and Microsoft to attend a Windows Phone-centric event on Septebmer 5th. This is the same day as Nokia World, and we have a feeling this isn't a coincidence. Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 cases and keyboard dock eyes-on
The Galaxy Note 10.1 is now good and official stateside, and you know that means Samsung has some new accessories to shill. On hand at Lincoln Center were leather cases in a variety of colors (including white, orange and brown) along with versions that mimic the flip covers for the original Galaxy Note and the Galaxy S III -- the difference being that they don't replace the Note 10.1's backing, as that's not removable. No plans to fix Office 2011 issues with Retina MacBooks
Microsoft currently has no plans to update the entire Office 2011 for Mac suite to support Retina graphics, according to an official comment on the company's Office for Mac blog. While the software does support OS X Mountain Lion, and functions on Retina MacBook Pros, only Outlook currently has Retina-resolution graphics. Users have complained that Word, Excel, and PowerPoint can look "blurry" or "very fuzzy" on Retina systems.

Korea's SK Telecom, KT in talks with Apple about LTE service
In what could be yet another hint that the next iPhone will support 4G LTE, officials with two Korean cellular operators -- SK Telecom and KT -- told the Korea Times that their respective companies are in talks with Apple to have the new phone support the 1.8 GHz network frequency.
SK Telecom is rolling out a Multi Carrier (MC) network, which will make LTE available in 23 cities by the end of 2012. This network allows devices to switch between the 800 MHz and 1.8 GHz LTE frequencies easily, easing the way for people traveling to Korea to use their 4G smartphones and tablets.
One challenge that faces Apple is supporting all of the 4G frequencies around the globe. In the U.S., for example, Verizon uses the 700 MH

Windows 8 RTM rolls out to developers, IT departments with TechNet subscriptions
At this point, we're expecting very few surprises when it comes to Windows 8: Microsoft just shipped the final code to OEMs, and the company already published a list of staggered dates when developers, volume licensees and Joe Schmo consumers would be able to download the software. We already knew, then, that on August 15th developers with MSDN subscriptions would be able to get the RTM build, as would IT pros subscribed to TechNet. Best Buy, Walmart, Target, more join forces for MCX mobile payment, deals provider
Mobile payments make strange bedfellows, so it's perhaps not all that surprising that a group of high profile retailers have teamed up to bring the world the Merchant Customer Exchange (MCX). The list includes such biggies as Best Buy, Walmart, Target, Sears, Lowe's and Shell, among others. The venture is set to offer up a mobile-commerce app that will provide payments and deals on "virtually any smartphone." Details are still pretty scarce, though the MCX's official site promises more info on the offering soon, including further details on deals and additional company names. As we approach the rumored launch date, the rumored iPad mini's rumored specs are the latest topic of rumor discussion among many of those who helped bring the rumors to light. Sega ist zwar nicht auf der Gamescom vertreten, hat aber zeitgleich einen neuen Trailer für den im Februar 2013 erscheinenden neuen Teil der Alien-Saga veröffentlicht. Aliens: Colonial Marines kommt von Gearbox Software, deren Entwickler im Trailer auch ein bisschen aus dem Nähkästchen plaudern: wie man den richtigen Spannungsaufbau erzeugt, wie detailgetreu das Raumschiff ist und wie es sich anfühlt, mit dem Originalsoundtrack des Films arbeiten zu dürfen. KT, SK Telecom in talks for LTE support for next iPhone
The two current iPhone carriers in South Korea, KT and SK Telecom, are in talks with Apple for LTE support in the next-generation iPhone, according to anonymous officials with the carriers in contact with the Korea Times. The underlying issue is that while the new iPhone is almost guaranteed to support LTE, KT and SK Telecom use separate frequencies for their LTE networks. KT wants Apple to support 1.8GHz, but SK wants 800MHz. SK reportedly sent an official to Apple's Cupertino headquarters earlier this week hoping to secure a deal.

Report: Apple reaches 70 percent of tablet market share
Research firm IHS iSuppli has released a report on marketshare in tablets by volume shipped that shows Apple up significantly once again in the tablet market, reaching 70 percent share in Q2 -- the highest level in more than a year. Shipping volumes do not necessarily have a direct correlation with sales, as Samsung demonstrated in the current Apple patent trial when it was forced to reveal that despite shipping millions of tablets, it actually sold only a small percentage.

New 'iPad mini' schematics emerge, are possibly genuine
A set of schematics that appeared last month -- purporting to be for the rumored iPad mini -- may be genuine, according to 9to5Mac. The latest information the site has received suggests that the device could take design cues from the iPod touch, while also sporting a much thinner side bezel in portrait mode. If true, it might suggest that Apple believes the device could be held in one hand in portrait mode by gripping it from the rear without the need for a purchase-point for a thumb.

Sources support new iPad mini design claims
New claims about the design of the iPad mini, including a mockup image, are believed to be an "accurate representation" of the tablet's design, according to iMore. The site says its information is based on several sources, who also indicate that the tablet should be as thin as the iPod touch, making it much thinner than the third-generation 9.7-inch iPad. If you're an iPhone or an iPad making your way from a factory in China to the United States, just hope that you're not going to end up in the clumsy hands of someone from the state of Mississippi. A new SquareTrade study shows that some the highest levels of accident damage to both iPhones and iPads occur in the Magnolia State.

Bislang hatte sich Apple strikt geweigert, den Aktionären eine Dividende aufzuzahlen. One Laptop Per Child hasn't exactly been silent about the upcoming release of its XO Touch, but details have thus far been fairly thin. First Looks: Skech Kameo for iPhone 4/4S
Although a new iPhone is coming in the near future, Skech isn't quite done releasing cases for the iPhone 4 and 4S. Vorbei: Flash für Android ist Geschichte

Das wars erstmal: Adobes Flash Player für Android ist ab heute nicht mehr für Neuinstallationen bei Google Play verfügbar. Updates für vorhandene Installationen soll es weiterhin geben, allerdings nur bis Android 4.0, Jelly Bean bleibt aussen vor. So langsam verschwindet der Media Player, denn auch Windows 8 bietet nur noch eingeschränkte Unterstützung, HTML 5 hat sich damit endgültig durchgesetzt.

Adobe stellt Verteilung von Flash über Google Play heute ein
Im November 2011 erklärte Adobe überraschend, dass man die Entwicklung der mobilen Flash-Varianten einstellen werde. Mit dem Start von Android 4.1 „Jelly Bean“ (ComputerBase-Bericht) gab es dann die ersten spürbaren Einschnitte, da erstmals keine angepasste Version des notwendigen Players veröffentlicht wurde.

Wenn eines Tages aus kleinen Hamstern große Hamsternauten auf Weltraummission werden sollen, braucht es ein erprobtes, möglichst autonomes Habitat, das den Tieren langfristiges Überleben sichert. Foxconn-Mitarbeiter packen aus: iPhone-Endmontage? Nein, lieber Jeans verkaufen
Foxconn baut die iPhones für Apple zusammen. Dass die Arbeitsbedingungen alles andere als gut sind, ist bekannt. In den letzten Jahren nahmen sich ein paar Mitarbeiter sogar das Leben. Die Unternehmen versprachen Verbesserungen. Der Schweizer Radiosender DRS1 hat Arbeiter zu der aktuellen Situation befragt.
Die Foxconn-Werke sind streng gesichert, und die Mitarbeiter dürfen eigentlich nichts über ihre Arbeit erzählen. Kein Wunder, denn schließlich wird in den chinesischen Werken in Zhengzhou das iPhone gefertigt. Und Apple ist stets um Geheimhaltung bemüht, von neuen Produkten soll im Vorfeld möglichst wenig an die Öffentlichkeit dringen.

MIT's Hiriko 'foldable' car said to be priced at around $16k when it launches later next year

Dark Silver: Eine dritte Farbe für das Sony Xperia S

Das Xperia S gibt es bisher in schlichtem Schwarz oder Weiß. Wie Sony nun auf dem hauseigenen Blog bekannt gab, wird das Smartphone demnächst auch in "Dark Silver" in den Handel kommen. Sollte das neue Modell in echt so aussehen wie auf dem Foto oben, dann müsste man wohl eher von Grau als von Silber sprechen. So oder so bleibt das Äußere aber zurückhaltend und Innen alles beim Alten. Wann die dritte Farbvariante erscheint, verrät Sony nicht.

Report: Windows RT Surface tablet may cost as little as $199

Ford has launched an iPad app specifically for its dealers around the US to use. Fourteen different dealerships participated in a test program earlier this year, in which sales consultants (car salespeople) used iPads to access information about cars on sale, show presentations on various car features, and even track customer preferences, both helping customers choose the right car for them and helping salespeople convince them to buy.

Hampture underwater colony established for science, leads the way for future hamster space exploration
Animals have had a rough time of it, when it comes to scientific exploration. Google wins right to appeal class-status in book scan suit

Phone companies see loss of broadband subscribers for first time in Q2, cable continues to gain
It wasn't all that long ago that the phone company was the source for internet access, first with traditional dial-up and later with DSL. That quickly began to change as cable companies started offering their own alternative, though, and the AP is now reporting that the second quarter of this year saw something of a milestone. According to its tally, the eight largest phone companies in the US lost a collective 70,000 broadband subscribers in Q2 (DSL or otherwise), while the four biggest cable companies continued to grow with 290,000 new subscribers. Mobile banking growing in the US and Europe
Forrester Research released a new report saying mobile banking is growing both here in the US and overseas in Europe. By 2017, says the report, mobile banking will be used by 108 million people in the US, or about 46% of those holding bank accounts in the US. Currently, only about 13% of account holders in the US and 9% of European bank account holders have taken advantage of mobile banking services, but Forrester says those numbers will grow greatly in the next few years.

Sprint effectively drops iPhone 4S to $50
Sprint has again dropped the price of the iPhone 4S, effectively lopping $100 off the cost by offering a $100 American Express Reward Card along with the purchase of a 16GB model and a two-year activation. Just over a week ago, the nation's third-largest carrier cut the price of a 16GB model by $50 to $150. The addition of the Reward Card means the carrier is effectively selling the latest version of Apple's phone for $50, far below the other national carriers.

Are Retina MacBooks displaying screen issues?
If a 56-page discussion thread on the Apple Support forums is any indication, there appears to be a problem with some MacBook Pros with Retina displays. The Retina displays with the issues show image retention and burn-in; others do not.
TUAW reader Joe K. sent us a note about the issue, which appears to be happening to MBPs with displays manufactured by LG; other displays made by Samsung don't have the problem with image retention and burn-in, are brighter, and seem to display colors with more accuracy.
To determine the make of the Retina display installed in your MacBook Pro, Joe supplied a helpful terminal command:

Apple updates iTunes Festival London 2012 app
Just because the Olympics are over doesn't mean there's not a lot of things to do in London -- the iTunes Festival, for one. Today Apple updated its app for the festival. iTunes Festival London 2012 version 3.5 adds additional performance and reliability improvements, additional language support, and now the app is available in additional countries. The availability of the app in additional countries is important for those festival attendees visiting London but who don't have a UK App Store account.
