NBA star uses iPad to sign $100M contract
NBA star Deron Williams is a pro basketball point guard who's just signed a five-year contract with the Brooklyn Nets worth nearly US$100 million. And he signed it in style: As you can see on his Twitter account, the actual signature was recorded on an iPad. With his finger!
The app he's using is called SignNow -- it's a free download that lets you sign documents (Word documents and PDFs) right on your device. It's pretty wild to think that all of Williams' work with the Nets (though he's training for the Olympics in Vegas right now) will be sealed with a signature on Apple's tablet.

Google's Nexus 7 discovered to have Smart Cover-like magnet sensor
You won't find this on its official specs list, but Google's Nexus 7 tablet apparently has a magnet-enabled sensor that'll automatically set the display to sleep -- it's hard not to think of the iPad's Smart Cover. YouTube user wwscoggin was able to discover and pin-point the functionality near the bottom left of the device by gliding a magnet along its bezel. Facebook releases SDK 3.0 beta for iOS developers
Facebook has launched the first beta of its v3.0 SDK for iOS. The kit is meant to help developers integrate Facebook support into third-party iPhone and iPad apps. The company notes that v3.0 includes improved user session management, readymade native UI views, updated Objective-C support, and upgraded Facebook API compatibility.

Facebook gibt neues Beta-SDK für iOS-Entwickler frei

NYC launches free public WiFi trial, links it to skeevy payphones
Free public WiFi may be the sort of thing you automatically associate with Starbucks, but starting today, you'll be able to add NYC payphones to that short list. The city's pilot program, just officially launched, aims to spread gratis wireless service to residents of the five boroughs and the ceaseless crush of tourists they love to hate. There has been additional casting announced for roles in the story of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs for the independent movie jOBS uncovered by the Hollywood Reporter. Tim Cook makes unexpected appearance at Allen & Co. retreat
Tim Cook today made a surprise visit to the 29th annual Allen & Company Sun Valley Conference in Idaho, the New York Post reports. The Apple CEO was on a list of possible attendees, but whether or not he would actually show was unsure. Tiny Wings update tonight brings iPad support, new modes
Tiny Wings 2.0 is now available on the New Zealand App Store, and is currently making its way around the world, to be available here in PDT around midnight or so. Malware affecting Macs running older versions of OS X
There's new Java-based Mac malware in the wild, but before you run screaming out the door to buy an antivirus app, read the rest of this post.
The new malware, known as GetShell.A, requires you to approve the installation of a Java applet. OS X, being the polite operating system that it is, warns you that the applet is from a root certificate that "is not trusted." If you still decide to go ahead and install this applet, your device will be infected.

Parallels Desktop, Parallels Mobile update for Retina tech

Researcher details method for teaching computers to win at board games through short training videos
All right, hotshot -- sure, you can trounce your five-year-old niece in a round of Connect Four, but are you ready to do battle with a machine? Nikon recalls battery packs sold with D800 and D7000 DSLRs due to burn hazard
Some important news for anyone who bought a Nikon D800 or D7000 DSLR earlier this year. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission and Health Canada announced today that the battery packs sold with the cameras are part of a voluntary recall due to a potential burn hazard. While there's been no injuries reported, Nikon says it has received seven reports outside of North America of the battery packs overheating. IHS: All-in-one PCs to outpace traditional desktops
All-in-one PCs will drive growth in the desktop sector this year and in years to come, according to IHS. The information and analytics provider's analysis of the industry finds that AiO PC sales are growing quickly, while traditional desktop sales appear to have stagnated. Tweetbot for Mac public alpha available for download
It's no secret that Tapbots is about to release a Mac version of its wildly popular Tweetbot Twitter application, and now the cat's really out of the bag. The company has released a public alpha of Tweetbot for Mac in order to receive feedback and bug reports, culminating in a much more stable and feature-filled final product.
In a blog post today, Tapbots noted that they also want to be "motivated to finish faster", but to expect a lot of bugs. If you choose to use the alpha and uncover a problem, you can send a bug or crash report by selecting "Send Feedback" from the Help menu in the app.

New malware targets OS X, Linux, and Windows
A new piece of malware is targeting Mac, Windows, and Linux users all at the same time, note security firms F-Secure and Sophos. The code pretends to be a needed add-on; in reality victims are opening up a Java Archive file, which then detects the platform a person is using before connecting to a remote server to fetch additional code, creating a back door for hackers. Google Chrome 22 dev release drops OS X Leopard support
Changes are coming for Chrome users who are running Mac OS X Leopard. According to reports in Ars Technica and CNET, Google is dropping support for OS X 10.5 with Chrome version 22.0.1201.0, which is now available in Chrome's developer channel. This version will make its way eventually into the public arena in the next few months. At that point, Leopard users will be stuck at the most recent version of Chrome.

Hands-on: Touchfire Screen-Top Keyboard for iPad
Recently MacNN was sent a sample of the Touchfire, an accessory for the iPad meant to solve a recurring problem: typing accuracy. Because the tablet lacks any sort of default feedback when you're typing, it can be extremely easy to hit the wrong key; by extension, this forces you to look down at the onscreen keyboard, slowing down work even more in some cases. Griffin MIDIConnect turns iPad, iPhone into music studio
Griffin has targeted its new MIDIConnect at iPad, iPhone and iPod touch users looking for the ultimate portable recording solution. The new adapter allows users to connect their pro-level devices into their iOS device and control in-built synths and other instruments in Garageband and a number of other iOS music creation apps. Alternatively, users can download MIDI controller apps and use the touch interface of their iOS device as a MIDI controller in a performance situation as the embedded video highlights.

Intuit releases Mint QuickView in the Mac App Store
Personal finance site Mint.com (owned by Intuit) has released its first OS X app in the Mac App Store. Called Mint QuickView, the app allows Mint.com users to quickly take a peek at their finances. The app isn't a full-fledged personal finance app like Quicken or iBank, rather it's a small window (read: mini browserish) to your Mint account. You access it from OS X's menu bar to see the balances on all your Mint accounts, recent transactions, and net income. The app also displays badged notifications when you have new transactions or one of your accounts needs tending to.

Es ist ein Promobild der Comedy-Band "Les Horribles Cernettes" und wurde von Tim Berners-Lee hochgeladen, der nicht nur das World Wide Web, sondern auch HTML und die URL erfunden hat. Zunächst war das WWW nur als interne Lösung für das CERN gedacht, die mit dem Problem unterschiedlicher Netzwerke in verschiedenen Ländern (Schweiz und Frankreich) zu kämpfen hatten. Das Bild war ein Gif und blieb bis 1998 online, dann starb der Hostrechner und es verschwand erstmal im digitalen Nirvana.

Londoner U-Bahn: NFC ist uns zu langsam

Customer Experience Director Shashi Verma sagte gegenüber GigaOM, dass es nicht möglich sei, mit aktueller NFC-Technologie die wichtige 500 Millisekunden-Grenze zu unterschreiten. iPad Mini: App-Mockups fürs 8-Zoll-iPad
Viele renommierte Publikationen prophezeien für die kommende Apple Keynote im September die Präsentation eines kleineren iPads. Und obwohl die Gerüchteküche meist schlampig von einem 7-Zoll-iPad spricht, dürfte es sich genaugenommen um ein 8-Zoll-iPad handeln. Immerhin ist die angebliche Bildschirmdiagonale von 7,85 Zoll näher an 8 als an 7 Zoll.

Nerdtris ist ein stylisches und herausforderndes Puzzle-Spiel für Geeks, Nerds und Gehirnjogger, heißt die Beschreibung für eine neue iPhone App. Und das ist nicht gelogen: Wer den Binärzahlenraum noch nicht gut beherrscht, der lernt ihn beim Spielen von Nerdtris.

Erst in 28 Tagen endet das Funding für die Open Source-Spielkonsole Ouya, aber schon jetzt sind knapp 2,4 Millionen Dollar beisammen, deutlich mehr als das ursprünglich veranschlagte Ziel von 950.000 Dollar. Das stellt die Macher von Ouya vor die Frage was mit dem Geld geschehen soll, die sie mal eben an ihre Funder weitergegeben haben. Die wollen vor allem mehr RAM und mehr als einen USB-Port, vereinzelt wird auch nach einem Launch mit Jelly Bean statt ICS verlangt. VLC-Update behebt kritische Sicherheitslücke

Wer den beliebten Media-Player VLC nutzt, sollte schleunigst überprüfen, ob die aktuelle Version 2.0.2 installiert ist. Das Update auf 2.0.2 ist zwar schon seit über einer Woche verfügbar, erst jetzt wurde aber bekannt, dass es auch eine kritische Lücke schließt. Produktionsmodelle von iPad Mini und iPhone 5 tauchen auf
GottaBeMobile haben ein paar Produktionsmodelle für Case-Hersteller aus Zuliefererkreisen erhalten, die das Modell für das iPad Mini sein sollen. Aus der gleichen Quelle kommt auch ein ebensolches Mockups für das iPhone 5. Beide stimmen mit den bisherigen Gerüchten weitestgehend überein, das iPad Mini wäre demnach ein bisschen dünner als das aktuelle iPad, der Dock Connector ist (wie auch beim iPhone-Mockup) auf jeden Fall kleiner. Die Maße passen auch, das Display ist wie erwartet 7,85-Zoll groß. Könnte also hinhauen, allerdings wäre es nicht das erste Mal, dass die Case-Hersteller an der Nase herumgeführt werden. Apple plans short iCloud downtime in early Wednesday hours
Apple has posted on its iCloud status update page that it will have a brief period of planned maintenance to its free iCloud service between the hours of 10 p.m. and midnight Tuesday (Pacific time, 1-3 a.m. Wednesday Eastern time). The company says that only one-half of one percent of users should be affected by the outage, which will cause some users to be unable to retrieve email.

Microsoft issues security fix for Office 2011 for Mac
As part of a larger release of bug and security fixes for Windows issued on Tuesday, Microsoft also updated its flagship Mac product, Microsoft Office 2011. A security vulnerability that stems from the way that folder permissions are set "in certain Microsoft Office for Mac 14.2 installations" that could allow attackers privileged access has been resolved. Users are advised to update to version 14.2.3, which also features some general enhancements.

Viacom channels disappear from DirecTV after the two companies can't reach a deal
As we feared, DirecTV and Viacom didn't work things out and before the clock struck midnight ET, all of the network's feeds went dark for the satellite company's customers. On Tuesday, Apple responded to media coverage regarding its recent withdrawal of the entire Apple product line from the EPEAT green-certification index. The EPEAT criteria, last changed three years ago, doesn't measure toxic material reduction, nor does it index smartphones or tablets. ITC review stops HTC from reapplying Google's loaned patents
HTC's last-ditch effort to apply borrowed patents from from Google to help fight against Apple's infringement battle was shot down by the US International Trade Commission today. The appeal was made after Administrative Law Judge Thomas Pender concluded that HTC failed to acquire all the rights in the relevant patents in mid-June. The six-member review commission agreed, and strongly suggested the addition of more co-complainants to fix the deficiency wouldn't fix the problem.

Motorola, MS to stay lawsuits pending FRAND ruling
Microsoft and Google-owned Motorola Mobility have jointly filed to stay their pending lawsuits over patent licensing until a separate hearing over "fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory" (FRAND) licensing obligations dispute is resolved. The stay will remain in place until a decision is reached on the FRAND licensing issues, due to go to trial in November, and after any appeals are exhausted. The two International Trade Commission complaints underway involving Microsoft's Activesync patent and Motorola's H.264 playback patents are unaffected by the joint stay agreement.

Woz wants a Surface
Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak spoke at a recent conference in Chile, and perhaps the most interesting thing he said was that he is looking forward to Microsoft's new Surface tablet. Yes, there's something about Microsoft's consumer-focused attempt at making a tablet computer (maybe the case with a keyboard or the built-in stand) that has caught Woz's eye. And he says that not only do Microsoft's latest offerings "have such a strikingly good visual appearance," but Woz also joked that maybe "Steve Jobs came back reincarnated at Microsoft."

Am Wochenende waren bereits viele Details der neuen Twitter-App für iOS durch einen Bug im App Store von iOS 6 an die Öffentlichkeit gelangt. Heute veröffentlichte das Team dann auch die aktualisierte App für Android und iOS.
Eins vorweg: Das Update beschränkt sich auf Änderungen an der iPhone- und Android-Version. An der iPad-Oberfläche und deren Funktionen hat sich nichts geändert. So fehlen weiterhin der Connect-Tab sowie Discover-Funktionen der Smartphone-Varianten.

Google+ app updated with iPad support
Not to be outdone by Twitter's big update today, Google has also updated its Google+ app, with support for the recent Google+ Events feature, full support for usage on the iPad, and the ability to start and join hangouts directly from the iOS interface. It's pretty snazzy -- if you're a Google+ fanatic, this is probably one of the better updates for the app you'll see.

Non-practicing entity (colloquially known as a "patent troll," or company that derives all or most of its income off of patents it does not actually utilize) EMG has filed a patent-infringement lawsuit against Google in the notoriously NPE-friendly District Court for the Eastern District of Texas in the Tyler Division. Just when I think I've seen everything in terms of iPhone cases, along comes a manufacturer that does something completely different. ego&company has announced a novel iPhone 4/4S case called the ego USB Case that includes a removable 4 GB (US$34.95), 8 GB ($39.95), or 16 GB ($49.95) USB flash drive that slides into the back of the case.
I don't know about you, but I've lost a number of flash drives over the years simply because they're small and they tend to fall out of bags and pockets. Something like the ego USB Case would be perfect, since I'm never without my iPhone. The USB flash drive slides into a slot on the back side of the case and snaps into place, so it's less likely to fall out and be lost.

Benchmarks appear for unreleased 13-inch MacBook Pro
Rumors that Apple may release a 13-inch MacBook Pro model with a Retina display got a boost when unverified benchmarks of an unreleased MacBook Pro model running an unreleased build of Mountain Lion turned up in logs for the benchmarking tool Geekbench. The unverified report follows another sighting of such a model on the Mini Battery Logger website with matching specs testing a new battery.

Rovio's Amazing Alex arrives this week
Rovio has obviously had a ton of success (the most success on the App Store, arguably) with Angry Birds, but the company hasn't done much outside of that brand since it launched. That's all going to change later on this week, when Amazing Alex arrives as the first non-Angry Birds followup from the Finnish game developer.
We'll get to find out just how much of Amazing Alex is actually original. The game was released on the App Store last year as Casey's Contraptions, a game which Rovio purchased whole hog from its creators. Casey's Contraptions offered up a lot of Rube Goldberg-esque
