ITU wants to bring smartphone makers to peace talks, hash out patent wars
The United Nations defines the stereotype of a peace broker, so it's not that far-fetched to hear that its International Telecommunication Union (ITU) wing is hoping to step in and cool down the rapidly escalating patent world war. The organization plans to convene a Patent Roundtable on October 10th -- in neutral Geneva, Switzerland, of course -- to have smartphone makers, governments and standards groups try and resolve some of their differences. Rumor has third-gen iPad in mainland China July 27th
The third-generation iPad will finally launch in mainland China on July 27th, local news sites claim. As would be expected, the tablet should go on sale at all of the company's retail stores in the country; it's also, however, anticipated to be available from Suning electronics, one of the nation's biggest retailers. Pricing and carrier support details have yet to be leaked, but will probably be consistent with those for the iPad 2.

Samsung gets temporary stay on Galaxy Nexus ban in US while waiting for Apple response
Samsung is getting just a bit of respite from the ban on the Galaxy Nexus, after all: Judge Lucy Koh has granted Samsung's request for a temporary halt to the ban while waiting on Apple's response on the subject, due July 12th. Facebook and Yahoo! friends again, agree to patent cross-license
And so, the Facebook v. Yahoo! courtroom tussle has come to an end. Twitter brings search autocomplete to the web, helps find Biebs tweets in record time
Twitter had been hinting at a big search update today, and that's just what it delivered. Instead of the (quite frankly clunky) search results page, a search box at top now provides autocompleting search results that split into keywords and people. The system is smart enough to check for spelling gaffes and related searches, and results can drill down just to followed users rather than the entire social network. Scientists take mind-controlled robot for a stroll (video)
What if you could control a robot -- wait, don't answer yet -- with your mind? Pretty great, right? That's what the Virtual Embodiment and Robotic Re-embodiment (VERE) group is working on, and it's made some pretty good, you know, strides. New Scientist details a test utilizing fMRI brain activity-sensing technology to control a robot in France from a laboratory in Israel. The volunteer was able to perform tasks like walking around a room, following a person with the small 'bot and locating a teapot, using visuals from a camera embedded in the robot's head. AT&T planning new option to hinder stolen iPhones
According to The Verge, AT&T is set to launch a new service meant to thwart cellphone thieves. The company will allow customers to shut down voice, data and SMS on stolen devices.
AT&T has reportedly issued information to employees on how the service will work. Customers will be required to inform an appropriate AT&T rep of a missing phone, etc. By shutting down those three services, customers will prevent the phone from being used without having to endure the inconvenience of a SIM block. News: AT&T to launch stolen device blocking system July 10
AT&T will launch a new service for reporting and blocking stolen devices on July 10, according to a new report. Samsung Galaxy S III OTA update adds brightness widget to drop-down menu
While we didn't have many complaints with what Samsung offered us in its 2012 flagship, several users noted that the auto-brightness setting wasn't really making the most of that 4.8-inch screen. Cisco climbs down another rung over unpopular Connect Cloud service
Cisco has already tried to soothe angry customers by scrapping a key section in its new Linksys privacy agreement -- a clause which allowed the company to monitor a person's internet history via their router. Three robbers assault French van carrying Apple products
Earlier today three men attempted to rob a van carrying Apple products in Aulnay-sous-Bois, just outside of Paris, according to reports. The suspects were allegedly carrying assault rifles, either M16s or Kalashnikovs. Despite this, the driver and the passenger in the van are said to have been released without injuries in the woods of Val d'Oise.

Nexus 7 wird 249 Euro kosten, Releasdatum in Deutschland noch ungewiss

Im September soll das Nexus 7 auf jeden Fall schon mal in Italien zu haben sein, das hat ASUS auf seiner italienischen Facebookseite durchsickern lassen. Ein Sprecher von Google Deutschland hat den Preis dann auch gegenüber Golem bestätigt, einen Erscheinungstermin konnte er allerdings nicht nennen. Immerhin kann man so davon ausgehen, dass es nicht viel länger als in Italien dauern wird und der Preis für die 16GB-Variante im Horizont dessen liegt was man erwartet hatte.

While we're still itching to handle its bigger (and more stylish) XL iteration, that hasn't stopped Nintendo rolling out the acid colors for two Asia-bound handhelds. China: Patentklage gegen Apple wegen Siri
Wieder muss sich Apple einer Klage in China stellen: Dieses Mal sieht ein Unternehmen namens Shanghai Zhi Zhen Internet Technology sein geistiges Eigentum durch Apples Spracherkennungsassistenten Siri verletzt. Die Firma bietet selbst eine ähnliche Software an – und hält seit dem Jahr 2006 ein entsprechendes Patent.
Shanghai Zhi Zhen Internet Technology verkauft die Software “Xiao i Robot“, die ähnlich wie Siri mit Hilfe von Spracherkennung Fragen des Benutzers beantwortet und auch einfache Gespräche führen kann. Im Jahr 2004 hatte das Unternehmen ein Patent für die Software angemeldet und im Jahr 2006 zugesprochen bekommen. Nach Angaben der Firma gibt es in China 100 Millionen Benutzer des “Xiao i Robot”.

Apple responds to spam app Find and Call
On Thursday, Kaspersky Lab Expert researcher Denis Maslennikov wrote about a rogue app in the iOS App Store and Google Play store that secretly uploads your contact list to a remote server and then uses that information to send out spam text messages.
Called "Find and Call", the app is actually a Trojan that lets users "find friends in a phone book." The app then steals your contact list and uses the phone numbers to send out spam messages on your behalf. The app has a companion website that lets you add your social networks and email accounts to the service. You can even use PayPal to transfer money to your Find and Call account.

Quartalsergebisse: HTC mit 57,8 Prozent Einnahmeverlusten

Und wieder ein Mal hat HTC mit starken Verlusten auf der Einnahmeseite zu kämpfen. Mit einem Gewinn von "nur" 200 Millionen Euro kommen sie eigentlich ungefähr da an, wo sie sich selbst schon vor einer Woche mit einer Umsatzwarnung, die die Aktien in den Keller geschickt hat, angesiedelt hatten. Im Vergleich zum Vorjahresquartal ein Desaster (473 Mill. €), im Vergleich zum letzten Quartal (120 Mill. €) allerdings eine Erholung, denn da lag man nur bei . Find and Call: Erster Trojaner im App-Store

Eine Russische Scam-Ware, "Find and Call", hat es - obwohl sie sich wie ein Trojaner verhält - in den App-Store geschafft. Es ist nicht das erste Mal, dass wir Gerüchte darüber hören, dass Amazon sein eigenes Smartphone plant. Nun wirft Bloomberg dieses Gerücht noch mal in die Runde und untermauert es mit Pantent-Einkäufen und einem Herstellungs-Deal mit Foxconn. Alles weitere bleibt allerdings auch dieses Mal im Dunkel. Wir würden von einem Android Smartphone mit sehr dick aufgetragenem Skin ausgehen, damit das alles zu Kindle Fire passt, sind uns aber nicht ganz so sicher, ob eine so starke Bindung zum Inhalts-Provider bei Smartphones wirklich gewünscht ist.

Das neue iPad: Apple soll über neue Hintergrundbeleuchtung nachdenken
Der taiwanische Branchendienst Digitimes berichtet, dass Apple wohl ein kleineres Hardware-Update für das neue iPad vorbereitet. Momentan besteht dessen Hintergrundbeleuchtung für das Retina-Display aus zwei LED-Einheiten – Apple soll wieder zurück auf eine Einheit gehen wollen, wie bei den älteren Modellen. Samsung expects record earnings for Q2 thanks to all those Galaxy phone sales
Samsung's complete earnings results for the April - June 2012 period won't come out until July 27th, but Reuters reports its early guidance to investors estimates the company's profit at a record 6.7 trillion won ($5.9 billion). Chinese company Zhizhen sues Apple over Siri-like patent
In what could turn out to be another copycat Chinese patent suit inspired by Apple's settlement with Proview, Shanghai-based voice activation developer Zhizhen Network Technology has filed suit against Apple for allegedly infringing a patent related to an invention called Ziaoi Bot, "a type of instant messaging chat bot system."
