Malware pulled from App Store; Hong Kong iTunes issues
Apple has pulled a Russian-language malware app from the App Store, according to The Loop. The app, Find and Call, was identified as a trojan on Thursday by security firm Kaspersky. People who downloaded the title would have their address books uploaded to a remote server, which would then spam text messages to contacts including a link to download the app themselves. An Android version of the app was also available at one point, but has gone missing from Google Play.

Als hätte Apple derzeit nicht genug Probleme mit dem App Store, gibt es nun einen weiteren Rückschlag für den Online-Store. Die App namens “Find and Call” wurde in Apples App Store und Google Play entdeckt, welche heimlich das Adressbuch kopierte und dann Spam-Nachrichten an die Kontakte verschickte.

Spam-happy iOS trojan slips into App Store, gets pulled in rapid fashion
You could call it technological baptism of sorts just not the kind Apple would want. A Russian scam app known as Find and Call managed to hit the App Store and create havoc for those who dared a download, making it the first non-experimental malware to hit iOS without first needing a jailbreak. Abstürzende Apps: Apple arbeitet an Lösung des Problems
Nachdem es in den vergangenen Tagen diverse Beschwerden über Apps gab, die nach einem Update nicht mehr starten wollten, hat sich Apple nun bei den Entwicklern gemeldet. Man sei sich dem Problem bewusst und arbeite derzeit an der Lösung.

Daily iPhone App: Outwitters is the new app from Tilt to Live creators
Tilt to Live was a fairly early hit on the iOS App Store. It used the iPhone's accelerometer to make a frantic but fun and addictive shooter. Now, developer One Man Left has released a very different game called Outwitters. GameDock would turn your iPhone into a retro gaming station
Gaming is obviously a big deal on iOS, but traditional gamers generally want something that the iPhone and the iPad don't provide: Buttons. Gaming on a touchscreen works in many cases, but for some games and some genres, you need a d-pad and some buttons to press. We've already seen some popular third party solutions to that problem (including the uber popular iCade), and here comes another one, in the form of a Kickstarter project called the GameDock.

Apple aware of corrupt apps issue, working on a fix
Earlier this morning, reports started circulating that the App Store was pushing corrupt binaries to iOS and Mac users, resulting in constant crashes of the affected apps. Marco Arment, of Instapaper fame, was one of the first to notice and very vocal -- bringing the issue to the attention of many in the media and at Apple. The list of affected apps is pretty staggering, including such high profile titles as Angry Birds Space, Yahoo! Search, Google Reader and, of course, Instapaper. Apple promises fix for corrupted App Store apps
Apple is now officially responding to complaints of corrupted App Store apps, reports say. On Apple's developer forums, the company has issued a statement: "We are aware of the issue related to apps crashing after update. We are currently working on resolving the issue. Stay tuned for updates," it says. In some cases developers are said to be getting emails directly from Apple, claiming that a dedicated team is working on the problem.

Apple becomes Asia's second most popular brand
A company called Campaign Asia-Pacific has released the results of its latest survey, examining the popularity of various brands in Asia. Apple has reached number two on the list. The company from Cupertino has topped big names like Sony and Panasonic, and jumped up along with Nestle (which is also growing hugely in Asia lately) to take the second spot inside the top five.
But Apple still has a little climb to go. Samsung is currently still the top brand in the Asia region, and that's a company that's going head up against Apple itself, both in patent battles and on retail shelves. AutoNavi tapped as iOS map supplier for China
Apple has selected local company AutoNavi to supply mapping services for iOS devices in China, according to two Bloomberg sources. Best Buy retail borrowing ideas from Apple Stores
That's the word from the Wall Street Journal in a report that says Best Buy has a "Solution Central" table filled with Geek Squad employees at a test location in Minnesota. It's similar to the Apple Store Genius Bar. Best Buy is also trying methods to let customers pay at several locations, rather than wait in a check out line.
Best Buy's interim CEO, Mike Mikan, says he is calling the Apple Store-like efforts "Best Buy 2.0." Among the changes is an effort to have lots of employees around to help people.

PC vs. Mac: Verkaufsrelationen gleichen sich wieder an
Der Analyst Horace Dediu von Asymco hat eine interessante Grafik angefertigt. Darin untersucht er das Verhältnis von verkauften PCs zu Macs über einen Zeitraum von 27 Jahren. Dass PCs einen Großteil der verkauften Computer ausmachen ist kein Geheimnis, aber allmählich scheint sich das Verhältnis wieder früheren Gegebenheiten anzupassen. Die größte Dominanz von PCs findet man 2004. Seitdem fällt die Kurve aber kontinuierlich. In diesem Diagramm sind weder iPhones noch iPads berücksichtigt. Google confirms Galaxy Nexus was pulled from Play store due to injunction, will return next week

University of Calgary experimenting with one-handed iPhone gestures
A research team from the GroupLab at the University of Calgary is working on a set of new single-handed gestures for the iPhone called the the Fat Thumb interaction technique. This technique lets you hold your iPhone with one hand and use your thumb to interact with the UI.

Checkmark is a new reminder app for iPhone from Snowman. I've been using it for a while now, and can tell you that it's faster than Apple's Reminders with unique, useful features.

Tim Hortons bringing free WiFi to 90 percent of its locations by September
It's already toyed around with offering free WiFi at a few of its locations, but Tim Hortons has now finally committed to making the service available at most of its restaurants across Canada. That's being done through a partnership with Bell Canada, which Tim Hortons says was selected after a "rigorous six-month testing process," and it looks like the WiFi has already been turned on at quite a few of its locations (you can search for those near you using the store locator on its website). Apple sued over Siri in China
After settling a US$60 million lawsuit with Chinese company Proview, Apple now faces yet another costly lawsuit in China. This time the complaint focuses on Siri and is initiated by Zhizhen Network Technology, a Chinese company with its own voice assistant software. According to a report in M.I.C. gadget, Zhizhen claims that "Apple's Siri infringes on one of Zhizhen's patents so-called 'ZL200410053749.9', which is a patent for 'a type of instant messaging chat bot system' called Xiaoi Bot." Judge Posner argues against use of software patents
The judge who recently dismissed an Apple patent infringement case against Motorola, Richard Posner, has questioned the need for software patents in a new interview with Reuters. He argues that the smartphone industry is suffering from a "proliferation of patents," and that software patents may not be necessary, since writing a program requires much less investment than what a pharmaceutical company, for instance, might put into developing a new drug. Bell brings free Wi-Fi to Tim Hortons in Canada

Mit der neuen redsn0w-Version 0.9.14b2 ermöglicht das iPhone Dev Team den Baseband-Downgrade bei iPhone 3G und iPhone 3GS von Modemfirmware 06.15 auf 05.13.04.
Die letzte große News im Bereich des iPhone-Entsperrens ist schon eine Weile her. Mit einem vorgegaukelten “Upgrade” des Basebands bzw. der Modemfirmware von iPhone 3G bzw. iPhone 3GS konnte man die Modemfirmware des Mobilfunk-iPads auf eben diese zwei iPhone-Generationen installieren. Apple, Samsung drop more claims in upcoming trial
The trial between Apple and Samsung in the US District Court in California is slated to begin at the end of July, and both companies are making final preparations for the case. Part of this process requires each company to pare down the number of claims it is asserting in the case, reports FOSS Patents.
Earlier this year, Judge Lucy Koh ordered the two companies to limit the number of claims in the case, which the companies did on May 1 and May 7. On Tuesday, another round of reductions was submitted to Judge Koh for review. According to

Researchers capture a single atom's shadow, has implications for quantum computers
A very small atom can cast a very large shadow. Well, not literally, but figuratively. Researchers at Griffith University have managed to snap the first image of a single atom's shadow and, while the dark spot may be physically small, the implications for the field of quantum computing are huge. The team of scientists blasted a Ytterbium atom suspended in air with a laser beam. Using a Fresnel lens, they were able to snap a photograph of the dark spot left in the atom's wake as the laser passed over it. App Store distributing corrupted binaries, developers say
For several days the App Store has sometimes been pushing out corrupted binaries, prominent developers are complaining. Instapaper creator Marco Arment notes that affected apps will crash automatically on launch every time, even after deleting and reinstalling, so long as the broken file is hosted on the App Store. Just under two dozen apps -- including Instapaper -- are known to have been impacted, though the number may be higher. Fixed binaries should now be appearing, but still require people to delete and reinstall their malfunctioning apps.

MacBook-Air-Designpatent: Taiwans Regierung rät zu Vorsicht

Apple scores quick takeover of iPad3.com domain
Apple already appears to have taken control of the ipad3.com domain, checks show. The address no longer has any content, and a Whois report indicates that the domain is now assigned to Kilpatrick Townsend & Stocktoon, a law firm Apple often relies on in patent and trademark disputes. Apple's complaint is still active at the World Intellectual Property Organization, but the former owner of ipad3.com, Global Access, appears to have surrendered the domain without a fight.

MobileMe ist nicht mehr. iCloud hat den Laden übernommen und dabei gleich zwei populäre Teile des Dienstes gefeuert. Hawk-eyed FCC watchers over at PocketNews have spotted some curious paperwork for an unknown PS3 model called the "CECH-4001X." The current, existing slimline PS3 is the 3000 series, and it has its FCC label in a different location to that shown in the new filing, leading Eurogamer to suggest that this could be a "Super Slim" variant -- which that site says has cropped up in separate rumors circulating before Gamescom next month. Late yesterday, Apple and Samsung presented a revised list of patents from each company challenging the other, reflecting a further narrowing of claims that may move Federal District Judge Lucy Koh to declare the case ready to go to trial, currently scheduled for the end of July. Ratio of Mac to PC sales rising, reflects changing market
A new chart by Asymco analyst Horace Dediu has revealed that while PCs have always sold significantly better than Mac computers, the ratio of sales has dropped precipitously since its peak in 2004 and now stands at the most competitive range Apple has achieved since 1985. The figures paint a picture of two simultaneous factors at work: the increasing popularity of Macs, along with the decline of the traditional desktop (and mostly Windows-running) PC.

The next Motorola Atrix phone has been revealed on the company's website as the Atrix HD. According to the listed specs, it features a 4.5-inch Colorboost HD display, will ship with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and (predictably) looks very much like the Droid RAZR. HTC strikes blow against Apple in UK patent battle
A London court which has a reputation for being loathe to find companies guilty of infringement has handed HTC an unsurprising victory against Apple in declaring that the Taiwanese smartphone maker is not in violation of any of four patents Apple was asserting. HTC, which brought the case defensively hoping to get all four Apple patents declared invalid, got its way on three of the four but was cleared of any infringing charges.

App-Store-Probleme: Apple-Server verteilen defekte Apps
In den vergangenen Stunden mehrten sich Beschwerden von iOS- und Mac-Nutzern, dass aus dem App Store geladene Updates nicht mehr starten und direkt abstürzen. Nachdem es zunächst nur kleinere Apps getroffen hat, ist nun auch Angry Birds Space HD Free von dem Bug betroffen.
Die ersten Meldungen kamen bereits gestern vom Instapaper-Entwickler Marco Arment, der via Twitter von dem Problem berichtete. Einige Nutzer konnten sein Update zwar laden, beim Start der App stürzte diese jedoch direkt ab. Abhilfe schaffte in der Regel ein Löschen der App und erneuter Download, sofern der lokale Server in der Zwischenzeit eine funktionsfähige Version erhalten hat

WSJ, Bloomberg sources add to 'mini-iPad' rumors
More fire is being added to the rumors of a 7-inch (or 8-inch, depending on the source) "mini" iPad. Both the Wall Street Journal (subscription required) and Bloomberg claim to have anonymous sources with "knowledge of the plans" that confirm a screen between seven and eight inches in diameter, and the component suppliers in Asia are preparing for a mass production of the device in September. European Parliament strikes down ACTA in significant vote
ACTA has been rejected by the European Parliament in a vote today. The Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement was soundly defeated, with 39 parliament members voting for the agreement, 478 against, and 165 abstentions. The move against the motion practically kills the agreement in its current form, with many critics suggesting it cannot be revived no matter how many amendments are made to it.

PC vs. Mac: Verkaufszahlen damals und heute
Apples Geschichte ist hinlänglich bekannt. Bis vor einigen Jahren wurden die Mac-Nutzer noch von den PC-Käufern belächelt. Seit 2004 wendet sich das Blatt aber zunehmend. Rechnet man iOS-Geräte wie iPad und iPhone noch dazu, verschwindet der Vorsprung der PC-Verkäufe noch weiter.
Die eindrucksvollen Diagramme wurden wieder einmal von Asymcos Horace Dediu zusammengestellt und veröffentlicht. Dem Diagramm ist zu entnehmen, dass die Verkäufe von PCs im Jahr 1984 schon sechs mal höher waren als die des Macintosh.
