Apple updates European warranty pages to reflect local laws

Apple has silently updated its European websites -- such as the one for the UK -- with a table on the differences between Apple's warranties and ones mandated by the European Union, reports observe. The document is divided into columns for EU law, the default warranties for Apple products, and extended AppleCare coverage. The most contentious point has been that EU law covers two years, whereas Apple only promises one without AppleCare.

Apple, DOJ may land e-book settlement within weeks

Apple may be ready to make important concessions to settle a possible Department of Justice lawsuit over e-book pricing, a pair of sources claimed Friday. Although not concrete, a deal could come "in the next few weeks," the Reuters insiders said. The core of the deal would revolve around Apple dropping its "most favored nation" clause, which bars publishers from offering a lower price at other stores.

OS X malware used to spy on pro-Tibetan charities, reminds us all to keep updated

Pro-Tibetan organizations that use Macs have discovered that their data has been accessed thanks to malware-based siphoning more commonly associated with Windows machines. Security expert Jamie Blasco revealed that two separate backdoor trojans can breach OS X if infected Word documents (yes, we know) or emails are opened. However, those who regularly keep up with security updates shouldn't be too concerned: both holes were patched before the end of last year, although that's scant relief for those whose privacy has already been infringed.[Thanks, Charles]

With all the reviews I have done, I was ashamed to admit that I've never taken the time to list those apps that I use on a regular basis with my children. New iPad Australian page changes for 4G ruling, Norway joins

Apple's Australian iPad pages have changed to preemptively comply with rulings on 4G marketing. It now makes more generic claims to support "very fast cellular networks" and makes clear that the iPad doesn't support the frequencies or technologies for what's considered 4G in Australia. The hardware is "not compatible with current Australian 4G LTE networks and WiMAX networks," Apple said.

News: Norwegian Consumer Ombudsman: iPad marketing ‘deceptive’

The Norwegian Consumer Ombudsman has sent a letter to Apple accusing the company of deceptive marketing for the latest iPad model being sold in Norway. Add-on turns a smartphone camera into a joystick (video)

One of the more irritating aspects of touchscreen gaming is almost certainly the inevitability of blocking the screen as you play -- particularly with smaller devices like smartphones. A new peripheral being developed by Kelo University takes an interesting approach to the problem -- using the device to transform the gadget's camera into a three-axis joystick of sorts by detecting the movement of markings on the add-on. TSMC may get into Apple pipeline through power chips

TSMC may have at least some involvement in Apple's device supply chain based on claims by Taiwan's Economic Daily News. The business newspaper asserted that the contract manufacturer had landed deals for power management parts designed by Dialog Semiconductor for future Apple hardware. The iPad, iPhone and other Apple products have become so popular in Japan that Apple is now Japan's top consumer brand. Just three years ago, Apple was barely visible in the #64 spot in Nikkei's annual brand ranking. Last year, Apple had made it to 11th place, and this year the company skyrocketed to the top of the list. China officially tops one billion mobile subscribers

We heard last year that China was approaching 900 million mobile phone subscribers, and it looks like it's now finally hit the big one. The country's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology confirmed today that, as of the end of February, there were more than a billion mobile subscribers in the country (1.01 billion, to be specific). As the AFP notes, that's individual subscriptions, which includes users with more than one phone, but any way you slice it that's a whole lot of cellphone users. How 3rd Party apps might integrate with Siri

Third-party integration into Siri remains at the top of many of our TUAW wish lists. Imagine being able to say "Play something from Queen on Spotify" or even "I want to hear a local police scanner." And Siri replying, "OK, you have two apps that have local police scanners. Do you want ScannerPro or Wunder Radio?" So why doesn't Siri do that? Well, first of all, there are no third party APIs. Second, it's a challenging problem to implement. And third, it could open Siri to a lot of potential exploitation (think of an app that opens every time you say "Wake me up tomorrow at 7:00 AM" instead of deferring to the built-in timer). Flurry: Google Play revenue just 23% that of Apple App Store

The Google Play Store still makes less than a quarter of the revenue from apps than Apple's App Store, Flurry found in tracking app data. Setting the iTunes-based Apple portal as the reference point, the analysis saw Google Play (formerly Android Market) make just 23 percent of the revenue relative to size in a 45-day period starting mid-January. Apple has had a continuing problem with domain squatters over the years, often paying good money to grab such internet domain names as iPhone.com, iMac.com, and others from people who have nabbed those names. Tim Cook ranks as most popular CEO in 2012 Glassdoor lists

Apple CEO Tim Cook has taken the top spot on a Glassdoor list of the 25 most highly-rated CEOs. The site records ratings from anonymous workers, who in this case judged their CEOs regarding a 12-month period ending on March 15th. Over 280,000 people participated; each rating was based on a five-point scale, from "strongly disapprove" up to "strongly approve." Cook won with an overall score of 97 percent.

Daily iPad App: Mactracker

We featured Mactracker as a Daily Mac App in 2011, and an iPhone version of the app has been around for a few years (with comparatively more sporadic updates). Mactracker is essentially the history of Apple hardware all in one app, or at least Apple from 1984 onward. Sony to launch NEX-FS700E 4K cinema camera for $9,000 at NAB?

What would you pay for the ability to capture cinema quality 4K video? $36,000? $18,000? Try $9,000. Apple set up a banner in the Parkland Mall in Dalian, China that advertised its upcoming flagship store in the nearby Century City shopping district. Apple has filed a fresh complaint with the World Intellectual Property Organization in a bid to claim two domains associated with its name. Specifically Apple is looking to obtain applecom.com and appleprinters.com, currently occupied by squatters (visiting the sites isn't recommended). RIM rumored dropping BlackBerry access fee to boost sales

RIM might counteract its recent poor results by dropping its longstanding BlackBerry server access fee. A rumor from a "senior source" at RIM speaking to BGR had the company exploring the possibility of dropping the cost it normally passes on to carriers in order to get wider adoption. Confirmation of Apple rejecting an app for accessing UDID

Paul Haddad of Tapbots confirmed that Apple is rejecting apps which send out UDIDs. The developer posted a rejection notice for version 2.2 of its popular twitter client Tweetbot. The notice says that Tweetbot was rejected because the "app does not obtain user consent before collecting their personal data" and points to the UDID as the culprit. Tapbots says it was using the UDID for its push notification service and has disabled the code in the most recent version of Tweetbot that it submitted to the iOS App Store. Haddad advised other developers who rely on the UDID, "If you are an app developer and depend on UDID for any functionality it's time to migrate away from it, sooner or later Apple will catch you."

Standards body ETSI has put the controversial nano-SIM vote on hold following a tumultuous build-up ahead of their latest meeting. According to FOSS Patents, the deep divisions between various smartphone makers including Apple, RIM and Nokia made it impossible to move forward with the vote as planned. Matters were further inflamed ahead of the vote with RIM also accusing Apple of vote-stacking by using proxies to conceal the identity of at least three member voters whom RIM has alleged actually work for Apple.

Streit zwischen Apple und Nokia: Abstimmung über Nano-SIM vertagt

Eigentlich wollte das European Telecommunications Standard Institute (ETSI) noch in dieser Woche zu einer Entscheidung bezüglich des nächsten Standards für SIM-Karten kommen. Die Differenzen zwischen den Parteien waren aber zu groß, so dass man die Abstimmung vertagen musste. Seit einiger Zeit streiten sich die Vertreter von Apples und Nokias Lösungen bezüglich des neuen Formfaktors der nächsten SIM-Karten. Während Apple weitgehend am bekannten SIM-Format, welches nur ein wenig kleiner werden soll, inklusive mechanischer Schublade für die Karten festhält, sieht für die Konkurrenz von Nokia, RIM und Motorola die Zukunft anders aus. Deren Vorschläge ähneln eher einer microSD-Karte, wobei Nokias Lösung

DICE+ digital chance cubes rolling out at E3

As far as random number generators go, the traditional die is about as low tech as it gets. Or at least, it was. Gaming startup GIC has taken it upon itself to update the old chance cube by outfitting it with LED backlights, anti-cheat roll detection and Bluetooth connectivity. DICE+, as the shakers of tomorrow are called, will sell for between $30 and $40 when they launch later this year. Verizon CEO Lowell McAdam in conversation Thursday raised the prospect of a mobile video service to try and secure its cable provider spectrum deal. BMO raises AAPL estimates on BYOD, enterprise iPad adoption

RIM says BlackBerry 10 on track, hints cheap Curves soon

FLA publishes final report on labor conditions at Foxconn

The Fair Labor Association has announced the results of its investigation into labor problems at Apple's major manufacturing partner, Foxconn. The full probe is said to have taken almost a month, and found "excessive overtime and problems with overtime compensation; several health and safety risks; and crucial communication gaps that have led to a widespread sense of unsafe working conditions among workers," according to the FLA.

Spotify lifts track limits on free accounts, struggles to stand out in streaming market

Good news for European fans of the streaming music service Spotify: The company has lifted the five-track replay limit per day for users of the free service in Sweden, Finland, Norway, the Netherlands and Spain. Additionally, US users will get their current six-month free trial extended, but it's not yet clear just how long that trial will last. Tricorder designs go open source: can detect magnetic fields, reveal Trekkies (video)

We're still working on our own plans to grab that $10 million Tricorder X-Prize from Qualcomm and our progress has just been given a shot in the arm from Dr. Peter Jansen, who's released the designs for his tricorders. Making all the specifics open source, his Mark 2 model runs on Linux, while the hardware includes an ARM Atmel microcontroller squeezed into a clam-shell with two OLED touchscreens. Gameloft hat ihr MMORPG Order & Chaos Online jetzt auf den Mac gebracht. Ab sofort ist das auf iOS bereits sehr erfolgreiche Online Rollenspiel also auch zuhause spielbar. iPhoto 9.2.3 erschienen

Apple hat soeben ein Update für iPhoto veröffentlicht. Version 9.2.3 behebt ein Problem welches auf Macs mit mehreren Benutzeraccounts zum ständigen Abstürzen von iPhoto führt. Außerdem schreibt Apple, dass weitere Stabilitätsverbesserungen vorgenommen wurden.
