RIM posts bleak Q4 results, Balsillie quits board
RIM recorded poor fiscal fourth quarter results that saw a major upheaval at the company. In the wake of a 25 percent year-to-year drop in revenue to $4.2 billion and a $125 million loss, former co-CEO Jim Balsillie has resigned from the company's board of directors. No explanation was given for the departure apart from completion of "retirement," although Mike Lazaridis was staying on the board.

iPhoto 9.2.3 out now
Not too much in this one -- the latest update to iPhoto is mainly just stability fixes. There is one mentioned issue that causes iPhoto quitting when dealing with multiple user accounts on the system, but otherwise everything else is just smoothing out the app.

Bioshock 2 for Mac (finally) out now
Better late than never, I guess. Bioshock 2 has finally (more than two years after the PC release) arrived on the Mac as a port from Feral Interactive. This one is the sequel to the classic title from Ken Levine (who's currently working on the next game in the series, Bioshock Infinite), and while it's not quite as good as the original, it does add some new elements to the gameplay, and if nothing else, will return you to Rapture, the ruined underwater city that's been one of the most fascinating settings in video games over the last decade or so.

ViewSonic ViewPad VS14445 passes through the FCC's database

RIM said purging execs ahead of results
New leaks have hinted at sweeping efforts by RIM to cure trouble inside the company. Tips to the Globe and Mail had numerous vice presidents and senior vice presidents being laid off on Thursday. Much of the focus was on marketing and sales staff, according to the unnamed person.

AutoCAD 2013 sports cloud services, better modeling options
Autodesk has launched AutoCAD 2013, a major update of its flagship design software. New to the program are links with the Autodesk 360 cloud service; this lets a user access a project anywhere with Internet access, as well as collaborate with distant coworkers. Fair Labor Association finds multiple violations at Foxconn facilities
The Fair Labor Association has announced the first results of its Foxconn investigation. The report documents more than 50 violations or policy gaps including excessive overtime, unpaid wages and low salaries that can't cover the workers' basic necessities. The results in this report came from a survey of workers in Foxconn facilities in Guanlan, Longhua and Chengdu. This is reportedly one of several reports the FLA plans to release.

Incident Tech's gTar gets teased, remains largely silent (video)
What you see above is the gTar, an upcoming electronic musical instrument from Bay Area-based startup, Incident Technologies. It's got what appears to be an iPhone docked in the pick-guard and it looks pretty cool lit up in the teaser video after the break. Beyond that, there's not a ton of information about the thing available online, but we did some digging and have pieced together a pretty good idea about the thing. The device made an appearance at South by Southwest earlier this month, and bits and pieces have made their way into the web by way of startup site AngelList and social networks like Facebook, Twitter and, of course, YouTube. RIM announces Q4 2012 earnings, Jim Balsillie resigns from company's board
We've already seen a bit of big news slip out ahead of RIM's earnings announcement, and the company's now dropped another bombshell itself. Former co-CEO Jim Balsillie has resigned from his position on the company's board of directors. In a statement, Balsillie said simply: "As I complete my retirement from RIM, I'm grateful for this remarkable experience and for the opportunity to have worked with outstanding professionals who helped turn a Canadian idea into a global success." Tweetbot dev confirms Apple rejection of apps using UDIDs
Apple is indeed rejecting apps that collect UDIDs without consent, Tapbots has confirmed. The Tweetbot developer says it has received a rejection notice after trying to submit a v2.2 update to the App Store. "We found your app does not obtain user consent before collecting their personal data, as required by the App Store Review Guidelines," the message reads. Apple singles out the use of UDIDs, which are associated with individual iOS devices.

Upcoming Dalian, China Apple Store to be 'world's biggest'
Apple is at work on a new Apple Store in Dalian, China, MIC Gadget reports. A sign in the city's Parkland Mall claims that the store will be the "world's biggest," but provides no other details. This includes a date for the outlet's launch, although construction has already begun.

Michael Lynton becomes CEO of Sony America, Nicole Seligman picked for SCA president

To the surprise of many, but not all, the same great Windows Media Center from Windows 7 was part of the Windows 8 Consumer Preview. Bump Pay lets users touch phones for wireless payments
Bump has just released a new iOS app, Bump Pay (free, iTunes), that lets users transfer money between their PayPal accounts by simply touching their devices. Users just need to put in their PayPal account details, and enter the amount of money they want to send to another iOS device. Purchased Play store apps gone missing? Google's looking into it
Quite a few folks have seen many of the apps they paid cold, hard cash for have disappeared from their list of purchases after Google rebranded Android Market as the Play Store. We haven't had the problem ourselves, but according to a litany of posts on the XDA-Developers forums, there are plenty of you out there who have. In addition to disappearing from the list of purchases, the afflicted apps apparently give users an error message when attempting to access them directly. Sony applies for a headset-based navigation pointer, knows you're not looking
If you're finding that the digital compass on your phone keeps leading you down the wrong path, then this patent application from Sony might get you back on track. The claims entail a wireless communication device (aka phone) configured to communicate with a headset. The novelty being, that using orientation information from the headset, the wireless device would determine which direction the user is looking. Based on this information (and your GPS coordinates), the device would then be able to "predict a destination location for the user." Sprint to stop offering WiMAX-based phones and tablets
Sprint's senior networks VP Bob Azzi delivered a presentation Thursday that declared the effective end of WiMAX on Sprint. The company would no longer launch WiMAX devices, he told FierceWireless and others in attendance. Spotify lifts five-play track limit on free accounts
Streaming music service Spotify has removed the five-track playback limit for its free service in five European countries. At the same time, the unlimited free trial will be extended in the US, due to a claimed very high response. Exactly how many more plays will be available in Sweden, Finland, Norway, the Netherlands, and Spain hasn't been revealed, however. Nor is it known by how much the six-month trial in the US will be extended.

Lion's Auto Save vs. Save As
Apple's OS X Lion introduced Auto Save, and eliminated the Save As feature from several apps as a result. Not everyone is happy about the switch, including Pierre at Betalogue:
I have already talked about the totally unnecessary (in my view) elimination of the 'Save As' command in Apple applications, including the iWork suite. The 'Duplicate' command that replaces it is simply not a good enough replacement, and the change irremediably breaks well-established workflows that cannot be adapted to the new command."

Apple, Samsung have 'communicated lately' about settlements
High-level executives from Apple and Samsung have "communicated lately about potential settlement options," according to Bloomberg Businessweek, citing sources familiar with the situation. The magazine has a new cover story called "Apple's War on Android," detailing the lawsuits the company has been pursuing against corporations like Samsung and Motorola. Nielsen: Smartphones dominate US phone purchases
A new report from Nielsen suggests the US is quickly becoming a smartphone nation. As of February 2012, almost half of all mobile subscribers (49.7 percent) own a smartphone. This is up from 36 percent recorded this time last year.
People are buying new smartphones at an amazing clip with more than two-thirds of new buyers choosing a smartphone over a feature phone in the last three months. The breakdown of recent buyers (last three months) by platform shows that Android is the leader with 48 percent of smartphone owners saying they purchased an Android device, while 43 percent of smartphone owners grabbed an iPhone.

Rdio continues its plans for world domination, focusing on Europe

NVIDIA sees $199 tablets in summer, says Android disappoints
NVIDIA's CEO Jen-Hsun Huang in an interview mid-week has predicted that Android tablets will hit $199 by the summer. Speaking to the New York Times, he predicted that the presumably Tegra-based hardware would shave about $150 in costs. I spent the morning dealing with the fact that my beloved daughter has killed yet another Hackintosh. It's not exactly her fault. For example, the drive outlived its years. The power connector on the device-side is broken, too. Neither one was worth fixing -- especially given the years of service we got out of the devices and our max investment of about US$300 (outside of OS and software purchases).
So here she is, a middle schooler, with the need to do research and writing, organize her homework, and perform light email duties.

Apple CEO Tim Cook has toured a new Foxconn production plant for the iPhone, company spokeswoman Carolyn Wu tells Bloomberg. Nielsen: Smartphones account for nearly 50 percent of US mobile phones as of February
Nielsen Mobile Insights' latest statistics are in -- and would you look at that. It's the rise of smartphone owners crossing paths with the decline of those still clinging to their feature-focused devices. Spotify: by the way, you still get unlimited songs with a free account
Remember that six month deadline we warned you about back in January? Well, it looks like Spotify wasn't so gung-ho about limiting the free version of its service, after all. The site is celebrating its ninth anniversary in the States by reminding users that it still has yet to impose a song limit for the unpaid variety. Spotify is extending the deal -- it's not saying for how long, though the mere reminder could certainly be taken as a sign that the sometimes overbearing record labels aren't hounding it to switch things up anytime soon.

Best Buy posts $1.7b loss, to close 50 stores in mobile move
Best Buy planned dramatic action Thursday after it posted a $1.7 billion loss for the last quarter of its fiscal year. As part of hoping to save $800 million by its fiscal 2015, it would close 50 of its "big-box" stores during its fiscal 2013, which started with the beginning of March. The retail chain hadn't named the stores in question, but expected these and other cost savings to cut $250 million in 2013 and $300 million just for retail by the 2015 target.

Tim Cook tours a Foxconn facility in China
Apple CEO Tim Cook is in China, and he is making the most of his trip. Earlier this week, he went to an Apple Store in Beijing and met with the mayor of the city. He then met with Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang. A Thursday morning report from Reuters now shows him touring a Foxconn facility in Zhengzhou.

Dark Meadow getting an update and free version, coming to Android
Dark Meadow is a title that's gained quite a bit of attention on the App Store since its release. It's a horror adventure game of sorts, though not that scary -- "dark fairytale" is what it calls itself -- with some really excellent graphics and pacing. EU: Mobile Roaming-Datentarife sollen schon im Juli fallen

Die EU hat einen Plan für die künftigen Telekom-Obergrenzen bei Roaming vorgelegt. Ab dem 1. Juli sollen zum ersten Mal auch Obergrenzen für Mobile Daten gelten. 70 Cent soll das Megabyte dann maximal kosten dürfen, und bis 2014 auf 20 Cent fallen. Auch die Anrufe und SMS sollen entschieden billiger werden. Ab dem 1. Juli 2014 soll man dann auch mit der eigenen Telefonnummer Datenpakete in fremden EU-Ländern kaufen können. Das Ziel der EU ist letztendlich die EU-Tarife bis 2015 den Inlandstarifen anzupassen.

HTC reveals Central Europe release date, pricing for One X, One S and One V
HTC's One series inches closer to expectant customers, with Central Europe apparently set to get the device next Monday. According to The Unwired, shoppers in Germany, Austria and Switzerland will all be able to pick up any device from HTC's 2012 catalogue, including the quad-cored One X (€599), the micro-arc oxidized One S (€499) and the somehow retro One V (€299). German carrier O2 has also backed up these claims, announcing that it expects to stock both the One X and One S next week. You'd best grab that passport and a wad of euros.

MacBook Touch Konzept: Könnte so schön sein
Wir erinnern uns noch gut an die Zeit, als das iPad in den Gerüchten noch MacBook Touch hiess. Damals hatten wir uns wohl vorgestellt, dass Rechner und Mobile Oberflächen viel einfacherer Zusammenwachsen als das in der harten Wirklichkeit der Fall ist. Das MacBook Touch Konzept von Oliver Terisse zeigt uns trotzdem noch ein Mal warum das alles viel besser sein könnte, als es zur Zeit ist. Handcircus set to return to iOS with free game based on Okabu
Simon Oliver's Handcircus studio was one of the biggest winners in the early days of the App Store. His game Rolando was originally published by Ngmoco back before the company went completely bonkers with social and free-to-play casual games. After Rolando 2 sort of sputtered out into the marketplace, hamstrung by Ngmoco's own strategy, Oliver and his company strayed away from iOS and created a game called Okabu for the PlayStation Network.

Wer sehen möchte wie oft er sich auf den diversesten Google Seiten rumtreibt, für den macht Google mit "Account Activity" jetzt schon mal einen Anfang und lässt einen (wenn man es anschaltet) Informationen über seine Logins mit den verschiedenen Geräten, authentifizierte Webseiten, Latitude und Google Mail sehen. Neues iPhone: Chips in Produktion, Veröffentlichung angeblich im September
Das neue iPad ist auf dem Markt – als nächstes iOS-Gerät dürfte jetzt wieder ein neues iPhone kommen. Texas Instruments soll bereits einen Strom-Management-Chip für das neue Gerät produzieren, das im September erscheinen könnte.
Die Website RepairLabs will aus sicherer Quelle bei Texas Instruments selbst von der kürzlich angelaufenen Produktion erfahren haben. Dell formally quits smartphones in US for now
Dell in a statement confirmed that it had backed out of smartphones in the US. At least at present, the Android-running Venue and Windows Phone-based Venue Pro had "run their course," PCWorld paraphrased a Dell representative as saying. The slowly building rumors surrounding the 2012 iPhone were joined by another after claims late Wednesday. A source at Texas Instruments told iPhone maintenance outlet RepairLabs that the company had started producing the power management chip for the next iPhone. Chevy GogoLink to tap smartphones for in-car GPS
GM on Wednesday sought to counter the navigation side of Ford Sync with a unique option depending on smartphones. GogoLink will give Chevy Sonic and Spark drivers in-car, turn-by-turn navigation by using a smartphone app that relays its position and info to the touchscreen in the center stack. It should range from basic points of interest coverage with offline map caching to Google-based local searches, live traffic, and 3D mapping.

51% of households in the US own something made by Apple
According to a new survey put together by CNET, over half of all households in America now contain something made by our favorite company in Cupertino. Over 55 million homes in this country own something that Apple makes (whether that be a computer, an iOS device, or an Apple TV), which means that 51% of American households are now Apple product owners. And the stats get even crazier from there: Of households that own at least one device, the average amount of devices owned is three. So not only has Apple sold devices to half the country's homes, but that one device wound up the gateway device to more Apple gear.

Apple has begun pushing out iTunes 10.6.1 via Software Update, resolving some stability issues that had caused the program to unexpectedly quit when performing certain operations such as syncing photos to devices. The update also resolves other minor bugs such as incorrect descriptions of interface elements as described by VoiceOver and WindowEyes, a syncing issue with certain kinds of iPods, and an ordering problem seen with TV episodes on Apple TV.

iTunes updated to 10.6.1, with bug fixes aplenty -- iTunes Producer bumped to version 2.6
iTunes 10.6.1 is now available in Software Update -- it fixes a few glitches in Apple's ubiquitous music and library app, including several crashing issues, some VoiceOver problems, and an issue where iTunes would freeze up while syncing with the smaller iPod shuffle or nano.
There's also a bugfix for an issue when browsing TV episodes on the Apple TV. Previously, there was a chance they would show up unordered, but this update should make sure that they're much more easy to browse. The update is rather sizable, 130.7 MB, and can be found in Software Update right now.

Mexico's Federal Competition Commission ruled late Tuesday that Telcel was a dominant company and would face extra regulation. Ofcom delays decision on Everything Everywhere's 4G proposal
UKers hoping for a hasty rollout of Everything Everywhere's 4G LTE network are apt to be sorely disappointed, as regulation entity Ofcom has shoved back the final decision on its proposal. We're told that the ruling will be moved from April 17th to May 8th, with the decision made to give stakeholders more time to respond. IDC sees Android past Windows by 2016, 1.8b smart devices
A shift towards the mobile world could see Android overtake Windows for sheer market share, IDC put out in a long-term estimate. Putting mobile and desktop platforms in a single smart device category, it had Windows slipping from 35.9 percent as of 2011 to 25.1 percent in 2016. Windows anti-virus software maker Avira has released a free version of the software for Macs, called Avira Free Mac Security. It is available for consumers and businesses alike who may wish to guard against malware downloads and the accidental acquisition and passing on of Windows viruses. Denmark, UK also looking at 4G iPad marketing
Denmark and the UK are also getting involved in scrutinizing Apple's marketing of the LTE iPad, reports say. The Danish situation is the most significant, as the country's consumer ombudsman is now said to be investigating the issue. As in Australia and Sweden, Danish marketing touts the iPad's LTE support even though the only countries in which it's usable are Canada and the US. The tablet otherwise defaults to 3G or Wi-Fi connections.
