Safari 5.1.5 update makes minor bugfix
Apple has posted a new version of Safari, v5.1.5. The update is a minor one, simply resolving a glitch that "could affect website usability" when running in 32-bit mode. Separate Windows, Lion, and Snow Leopard downloads are available.

Review: SwitchEasy Canvas iPad case (2012)

Windows Phone contest has known Android, iPhone 'threats'
Microsoft has a guide for its store staff as to devices and software that can beat its Windows Phone challenges, insiders uncovered on Monday. Staff were told to be careful about the weather challenge at the heart of more the recent incident, of getting temperature for two different cities, as Android users with the right widgets could win the test, according to The Verge. Similarly, iPhone 4S owners could win two tests, either by using a faster camera to post quickly to Facebook or by using a Siri trick to post to Facebook and Twitter at the same time.

Safari 5.1.5 update fixes issue when running in 32-bit mode
Software Update just alerted me that Safari 5.1.5 is available. As noted on the screenshot above, the only information from Apple was that the update "contains a fix for an issue that could affect website usability when running Safari in 32-bit mode.

Daily iPhone App: Battleloot Adventure tweaks turn-based RPG combat
When I first heard about Battleloot Adventure, it was being compared to the great Battleheart game on iOS. That's a fair comparison given the way the game looks, but I think I have a much better one: old-school Final Fantasy, with a focus on combat. As you might have expected, Battleloot Adventure pares down the old turn-based RPG genre to its core -- there's not a lot of story here, and your adventurers just sort of stumble across each other within the first few missions, as you're taught the mechanics of fighting with a party.
But once everything has filled out, Battleloot Adventure does well using the iPhone and iPad's touchscreen to bring

Fisker plans to replace the battery packs on 640 Karma sedans
Fisker Automotive hasn't exactly had the smoothest of launches for its all-electric Karma sedan, and it's now been dealt yet another small setback. As Wired Autopia reports, Fisker now plans to replace the battery packs on nearly all of the Karmas that have rolled off the assembly line -- apparently due to the same issue that caused the car to break down during Consumer Reports' test of the car. Nokia claims Apple royalty-free nano-SIM promise is hollow
Nokia in a mid-Monday response dismissed Apple's royalty-free offer should it define the upcoming nano-SIM card format. The Finnish company told IDG that it was "not aware" of any Apple patents essential to its nano-SIM card. Survey: 24% of Americans plan to buy the new iPad in the next three months
While all surveys should be viewed with a skeptical eye, a recent study from Baird Equity Research should make Apple watchers happy. As reported by Fortune's Philip Elmer-DeWitt, the survey of 488 "younger, tech-savvier" online respondents by Baird showed some surprising results.

Intel's chip market share hits 10-year peak through mobile
Intel has managed to not only hold on to but widen its lead as the world's largest chip designer in the past year, iSuppli determined Monday. By revenue, Intel had seen its revenue in 2011 go up over 20 percent to $48.7 billion dollars despite the effect of the iPad and other tablets. ARM's champion, Samsung, had moved just over half a point to $28.6 billion.

MacMall opens Chicago retail store, giving away $14K in products
Since 1991, MacMall has been selling just about every product Apple makes as well as an assortment of quality accessories. The retailer has been an online presence for most of that time, although it has three brick-and-mortar stores in Southern California. Now MacMall has spread its wings and opened a new store in Chicago.
To celebrate the new store at 329 W. Grand Avenue in Chicago, MacMall is having an official grand opening on Saturday, March 31. There's a ribbon cutting at 10 AM, and MacMall is going to have raffle drawings for over US$7,000 in technological toys.

New iPad runs near rivals' heat, 25 hours as hotspot
Fresh tests of the new iPad have shown that concerns over its temperature have been overstated in light of competition. The range of Macworld tests showed that, despite the extra backlighting and larger processor demanded by the new screen, the current Apple tablet is within a few degrees of the lower-resolution, slower ASUS Transformer Prime and Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 LTE. New iPad can be used as Verizon LTE hotspot for over 24 hours
Anandtech took a closer look at the new iPad's 42.5 Wh battery and discovered the battery is fantastic for those using the device as a mobile hotspot. In a series of tests, they ran the Verizon WiFi+4G iPad from a full charge down to zero with the screen off. Total time was an impressive 25.3 hours on a single charge.
Overall, the battery performs as expected. The retina-equipped iPad has a run time that's slightly less than the iPad 2, and you'll get an hour less juice on LTE than WiFi.

FTC puts out privacy guidelines with mobile in mind
As promised, the US Federal Trade Commission has posted its Internet privacy recommendations (below) as of Monday. The guidelines include its well-known Do Not Track recommendations, which would have companies honor browser settings to block ad cookies and other tracking, but would have a significant mobile component. Officials have suggested that mobile services improve and provide "short, meaningful disclosures" about privacy safeguards to make sure that users both see and understand their options.

MacMall to open first retail store outside of California
A third-party Apple retailer, MacMall, is planning to expand outside of southern California for the first time, notes AppleInsider. Octogenarian suing Apple after walking into glass door at Apple Store
Those glass walls and doors at Apple Stores can be a hazard. Although the company installed white "crash graphics" (see photo above) on the glass walls and doors of many stores last year to prevent such an occurrence, 83 year-old Evelyn Paswell walked into the doors of the Apple Store Manhasset on Long Island and broke her nose. The octogenarian is now suing Apple for US$75,000 for medical expenses plus $1 million in punitive damages for negligence.

HTC buys stake, patent deal in cross-platform SyncTV service
HTC on Monday bought a 20 percent stake in SyncTV for what could be a sign of larger content ambitions. The deal comes partly in return for patent licenses from SyncTV's parent Intertrust Technologies and gives it access to SyncTV's techniques for digital copy protection. A woman from Queens, New York is suing Apple for $1 million after smashing into the glass door of a Long Island Apple Store, says CBS. Evelyn Paswall is 83, and says she broke her nose on the door because she didn't realize she was walking into glass. It's been a while since we've heard the name SyncTV 'round these parts, but perhaps we'll be seeing a bit more of it now that HTC has a stake in the streaming video company. Sources claim iOS search could gain Baidu support in China
Apple is planning to integrate Baidu web search into iOS, according to sources for Sina Technology. Baidu is an extremely popular search engine in China, but iOS currently defaults to Google, with Bing and Yahoo as secondary options. Apple offers royalty-free license to nano-SIM patents
FOSS Patents obtained a letter that Apple's legal team sent to the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) about its nano-SIM patents.
The letter said that Apple will grant royalty-free licenses to any essential nano-SIM patent as long as its nano-SIM proposal is approved and other patent holders agree to do the same with their patents.
This olive branch from Apple should alleviate any concerns that the company intends to use its patents to control and monetize the standard. The ETSI is expected to discuss the standard later this week.

Future iOS update in China may adopt Baidu search, drop Google
According to The Next Web, Chinese website Sina Tech speculates that Apple may roll out an update in China that'll drop Google search from iOS and replace it with Baidu, a Chinese language search engine. Neues iPad: Akku länger aufladen oder nicht?
Um den Akku und die Batterieanzeige des neuen iPad gibt es einige Probleme bzw. Ungereimtheiten. Dabei sollte man Apples neues Tablet aber nicht zu lang aufladen, da sonst die Lebensdauer des Akkus leiden und sich verkürzen könnte.
Zuletzt war öfter zu lesen, dass sich der Akku des neuen iPad trotz einer Anzeige von 100 Prozent noch nicht vollständig wieder aufgeladen hat. Das berichten zumindest einige Besitzer. Erst wenn das iPad weitere 60 Minuten an der Steckdose hängt, sei es komplett aufgeladen und auch die Laufzeit soll sich somit deutlich verbessern. Debunkatron: No, the iPad is not destroying its own battery
Dr. Raymond Soneira of DisplayMate Technologies analyzed the performance of the new iPad's battery when it says it's 100 percent charged versus when it's actually 100 percent charged. Unsurprisingly, he found a discrepancy; it's already been widely reported that the new iPad's charging indicator is bugged somehow and doesn't correctly report when the iPad is fully charged. Though the new iPad may report 100 percent charge capacity, it's in fact only around 90 percent charged at that point. It's a simple bug to fix, and it'll likely be one focus of a 5.1.1 update to iOS.

In its opening weekend (give or take a day or two) Rovio's space-based reinvention has picked up more than 10 million downloads. Presumably assisted by its freebie status on Android devices, Rovio's self-congratulatory tweet didn't give a breakdown across platforms. Bereits im August 2011 hatte Apple angekündigt, dass Apps bald nicht mehr auf die UDID eines iOS-Gerätes zugreifen dürfen. Das Unternehmen lässt nun Taten folgen und lehnt in diesen Tagen erstmals entsprechende Apps für den App Store ab.
Die UDID ist eine aus Ziffern und Buchstaben bestehende Geräte-ID, mit der sich jedes einzelne iPhone oder iPad identifizieren lässt. Das ist besonders interessant für Unternehmen für Mobil-Werbung, die so mit der Unterstützung mehrerer Entwickler Daten über das Verhalten und die Interessen einzelner Benutzer sammeln können. iOS 5.1: 61 Prozent aller iOS-Benutzer sind bereits umgestiegen

Square on late Sunday slipped out a full remake of its Card Case mobile payment app. Now called Pay with Square, the iOS version (App Store) is now joined by the very first Android version (Google Play), both with new interfaces. We're big fans of Samsung's work and the prevailing feeling is that the Galaxy Tab 8.9 is the pinnacle of the family. The original 7-incher was too expensive and ran Android 2.2, so we were delighted to see the revamped edition running Honeycomb and costing a very reasonable $400 (it's even cheaper now). DevJuice: Apple begins unique identifier crackdown
The Verge writes that Apple has apparently begun to crack down on apps submitted using the now deprecated UDID (unique device identifier) APIs that allow developers to track individual devices.
The programmer interface used to return an alphanumeric string unique to each deployed device. It was built out of a hash of the unit's serial number and other internal details. Apps that use the uniqueIdentifier API will automatically be rejected as this policy rolls out to its full complement of review teams.
