I've seen just about every type of iPad case in the two years that the world's best-selling tablet has been on the market, most of which are variations on the theme of protection. World's largest telescope underway, scientists definitely observe big bang
Once again astronomers are observing formative explosions, but this time a little bit closer to home. Three million cubic feet of planet earth is being blasted from the Chilean Andes as work on what will be the world's largest telescope begins. The location is the Carnegie Institution's Las Campanas Observatory, and the project is a collaboration between South Korean, Australian and American institutions to create the Giant Magellan Telescope. Apple updates iTunes Movie Trailers app to work with the Retina Display
Apple released an iTunes Movie Trailers app last year, so you could watch movie trailers from iTunes directly on your iPad, and that app has just been updated with the ability to stream movies at a higher resolution (probably around 1080p, since that's the usual format for these things, but we can't be sure). This way, they'll look even better on the Retina Display of your new iPad. You can go right now, and watch movie trailers like The Avengers, Prometheus, and more over there for free.

Chrome OS coming to ARM?
Many moons ago, Google made it quite clear we wouldn't be seeing its browser-based OS on any tablets or phones, but it never said Chrome OS wouldn't run on devices powered by similar silicon. In fact, the issues tracker at the Chromium OS project shows that work's being done to get Chrome OS compatible with ARM architecture, and in particular a Samsung Exynos 5250 chip. That Sammy silicon appears to be inside a new bit of hardware, codenamed "Daisy," but deeper digging failed to provide further details about the mystery device. Weltrekord: 100 Tesla starkes Magnetfeld kreischt (Video)

Am Los Alamos National Lab haben sie seit etwa fünfzehn Jahren daran gearbeitet, ein 100 Tesla starkes, nichtdestruktives Magnetfeld zu erzeugen, jetzt ist es vor zwei Tagen mit einem herzhaften Kreischen gelungen. Nichtdestruktiv heisst in diesem Zusammenhang, dass der Magnet beim Vorgang nicht zerstört wird. Es ist wesentlich einfacher ein starkes destruktives Magnetfeld zu erzeugen, da liegt der Weltrekord bei 2800 Tesla, allerdings lässt es sich dann auch nu8r äußerst kurz aufrechterhalten und ist deswegen ziemlich nutzlos. Users take to iOS 5.1 surprisingly quickly
Developer David Smith has posted upgrade stats for his users in terms of their adoption to iOS 5.1, and as you can see above, the curve is pretty steep. iOS upgrading has always been sort of an issue for Apple -- in the past, users (I mean outside of the elite readers and staff of TUAW, of course) haven't been quite so willing to upgrade so quickly, and Apple is always trying to push users towards the newest iOS versions for developers' sake. But clearly iOS 5.1 has made a big splash, especially since it's the first big update that's available to download right over the air onto your device, rather than requiring a link up to iTunes on a computer.
And outside of the Apple ecosystem, this is still pretty phenomen

Toshiba bringt 3D-TV ohne Brille nach Deutschland
Toshiba treibt die Entwicklung von brillenlosen, autostereoskopischen 3D-Geräten weiter voran und wird am 31. März erstmals einen derartigen Fernseher in den europäischen Markt einführen. Ex-Apple engineer claims new Apple TV UI was rejected by Job
Former Apple TV engineer Mike Margolis has claimed that the new Apple TV interface was actually a previously rejected idea. He claimed that they had been "tossed out" five years prior in favor of the text-heavy design, as "SJ [Steve Jobs] didn't like them." Although only one designer had been directly responsible for user experience, a wider overhaul of the larger staff and a lack of Jobs' oversight led Margolis to think Apple had lost a necessary level of restraint.

iPhone 5: Kein größeres Display laut iMore
Wird das iPhone 5 nun größer oder nicht? Nachdem „Reuters“ jüngst von einem potentiellen iPhone mit 4,6 Zoll großem Display berichtete, werden diese Gerüchte nun von „iMore“ dementiert. Das als gut informiert geltende US-Blog hat einige interessante News zum iPhone der fünften Generation gesteckt bekommen.
Wenn es nach „iMore“ geht, wird Apple seiner Linie treu bleiben und das iPhone nicht wie zuletzt von von „Reuters“ behauptet mit einem deutlich größeren Bildschirm ausstatteten. Vielmehr wird das kalifornische Unternehmen beim iPhone 5 weiterhin auf das gängige 3,5 Zoll Display setzen oder es minimal vergrößern. Multiple job listings at Apple this week have hinted that Apple is getting ready to support Voice over LTE, or VoLTE. Telephony software engineer positions ask for experience with IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS), the foundation for VoLTE's purely Internet-based calling. They're also asked to know related technology, such as the common VoIP protocol SIP as well as real-time transport (RTP).

DIY: Gigantischer Papierflieger geht in die Luft (Video)

Vom kleinen Papierflieger den der zwölfjährige Arturo Valdenegro für das Giant Paper Airplane Project des Pima Air & Space Museum gefaltet hat bis zum Start des "Arturo's Desert Eagle" war es ein weiter Weg. Das Design wurde von einem Team um Art Thompson (der unter anderem am B2-Stealth Bomber beteiligt war) in ein knapp vierzehn Meter langes Pappflugzeug mit 7,31 Meter Spannweite übersetzt und vergangenen Mittwoch über der Wüste von Arizona mit einem Hubschrauber gestartet. Lange dauerte das Vergnügen mit knapp zehn Sekunden Flugzeit zwar nicht, aber Pappe scheint irgendwie das Material des Tages zu sein, zumindest was Fluggeräte angeht. Video

Chevrolet replacing 120-volt power cords on most Volt automobiles
If you're one of the 10,000 or so folks who pay insurance on a Chevrolet Volt, you may have a new cable coming your way. According to The Detroit News and Yahoo! Autos, General Motors will soon be sending out replacement 120-volt charging cords for Volt automobiles, which are said to "offer some more consistency in charging," while also making it more durable. We're told that some of the newfangled chargers have shipped with recent Volts, but the majority of customers were sent home with the older model. Plant Apple VoIP für iOS?
Ein iPhone braucht man – na klar – zum Telefonieren. Dass Apple sich erstmals diese Grundfunktion des Lieblingsgeräts zueigen machen will, deutet eine aktuelle Stellenausschreibung an. Danach könnte ein VoIP-Dienst die Netzanbieter weiter von der Bildfläche verdrängen.Schon mit FaceTime und zuletzt iMessage hat sich Apple eine große Scheibe vom Monopol der Netzanbieter abgeschnitten. Ein eigener Voice-over-Internet-Protocol-Service (VoIP) beziehungsweise VoLTE für die kommende Generation des mobilen Betriebssystems iOS wäre damit kein abwegiger Schritt. Auch bei den Anbietern dürfte Apple sich dank der starken Marktposition des iPhones nicht vor Gegenwehr fürchten.

Permoveh: Rollstuhl kann seitwärts und diagonal fahren (Video)

Das Permoveh (Personal Mobile Vehicle) ist ein Rollstuhl mit vier Rädern, der sich nicht nur auf der Stelle drehen, sondern problemlos auch seitwärts und diagonal bewegen kann. Komori Masaharu von der Universität Kyoto hat dazu ein cleveres Rad-im-Rad-System entworfen, bei dem sich viele kleine Räder in den großen drehen und so die Seitwärtsbewegung möglich machen. Apple iPad: Rollenspiel Baldur's Gate im Sommer 2012 im App Store
Fans von Rollenspielen aufgepasst! Der Spiele-Klassiker Baldur's Gate des Entwicklers BioWare wird in einer Enhanced-Version für das Apple-Tablet kommen. Als groben Zeitraum gibt das Entwicklerstudio Overhaul Games den Sommer 2012 der Neuauflage an.
Trent Oster, Projektleiter des Entwicklerstudios, gab nun bekannt, dass Baldur's Gate auf allen drei verfügbaren Generationen des iPads laufen wird. Die Enhanced Edition von Baldur's Gate soll dabei auf der Infinity Engine laufen und neben dem Hauptspiel auch die Erweiterungen enthalten. Des Weiteren statten die Entwickler das Spiel auch mit komplett neuen Inhalten aus. So ist bereits jetzt bekannt, dass ein neuer Charakter verfügbar sein wird.

Mac OS X wird 11 Jahre alt
Am heutigen Tag wird Mac OS X elf Jahre alt. Zwar hatte es schon im September 2000 eine Public Beta gegeben, die finale Version 10.0 stand aber erst ab dem 24. März des Jahres 2001 zum Verkauf. Sonys erstes Chromebook VAIO VCC111 passiert die FCC

Auch Sony scheint jetzt unerwarteterweise ins Chromebook-Business einsteigen zu wollen: bei der FCC ist jetzt das VAIO VCC111 aufgetaucht, was bedeutet, dass es kurz vor der Markteinführung in den USA steht. Die Bedienungsanleitung erwähnt explizit das Chrome OS, die tastatur sieht der des Samsung Series 5 ziemlich ähnlich und nach den Fotos zu urteilen gibt es außerdem einen Kopfhöreranschluss, Mikrofonanschluss, HDMI-Port, SD-Kartenleser, zwei USB 2.0-Ports und ein 11,6-Zoll Display.

Toshiba: Brillenloses 3D auch in neuen Satellite-Notebooks
Toshiba wird künftig auch außerhalb der Qosmio-Reihe Notebooks mit 3D-Displays ausstatten, bei denen für die Erzeugung des räumlichen Bildes keine spezielle Brille erforderlich ist. Als Vordenker sah Steve Jobs die Zukunft des Klassenzimmers digital und interaktiv – und stieß zu Lebzeiten an die Grenzen des US-amerikanischen Bildungssystems. Nun sollen iPads in niederländischen Schulen eingesetzt werden.Wie Walter Isaacson in seiner Jobs-Biographie beschreibt, war Steve Jobs höchst unzufrieden mit der Ausstattung und den Lernmethoden an Schulen. Report: new iPad continues to charge after displaying '100%'
A leading researcher examining the third-generation iPad has discovered through testing and actual voltage readings that the latest iPad requires around two hours of additional charging beyond the point where the indicator reads "100%" in order to truly achieve maximum charge. Oracle, Google made to talk settlement before April 9
Oracle and Google may be pressed into settling a lawsuit over Java patents faster after Judge Paul Grewal ordered more settlement talks. Despite having dramatically lowered damages earlier in the week, at least Google's mobile VP Andy Rubin and Oracle CFO Safra Catz would have to meet before April 9. Austin TX tops list of fastest download speeds in US cities
Pando Networks has announced its findings on US broadband speed averages, finding Austin the top city for fast internet downloading, with Rhode Island the fastest state and Comcast the fastest average ISP. The software consulting and analytics firm tested 10 million downloads (mostly games) of software using Pando's cloud-based distribution network. Avid now including Pro Tools Express with Mbox, Mbox Mini
In addition to offering a selection of hardware Mbox audio interfaces with the full Pro Tools 10, Avid is now including a new, lighter version of the music-creation software, called Pro Tools Express, for free with the current Mbox and Mbox Mini, allowing users who don't need the full Pro Tools package to work with the software. FCC: AT&T itself had admitted merger would cause job losses
The FCC in one of its gradually more common responses shot back at AT&T's linking T-Mobile job cuts to the failed merger. A spokesperson claimed to AllThingsD that AT&T was being disingenuous given its own statements to the FCC on jobs. Despite public claims to creating jobs, AT&T's "own confidential documents" had indicated that it was likely to incur "significant job losses" if the merger was completed, the FCC said.

US Army debuts app marketplace prototype: iOS first, Android coming soon
The promise of an Army app store has been bandied about for quite a while now, but it looks like it's slowly becoming a reality. The US Army has today officially announced a prototype of the Army Software Marketplace, a web-based app store that currently includes twelve different training apps that have been approved for Army-wide use. Daily iPad App: Phrase Game is a party game in an app
The intersection of physical games and Apple's iOS platform is interesting -- the iPad and the iPhone are very good for abstracted interfaces, just because you're touching them directly rather than using a mouse or a keyboard, so it makes sense that they'd be ideal for interacting in a game-like fashion in real space. And Phrase Game, by Removem's Matt Martel, basically does just that. It's a party game, similar to Taboo or even Pictionary, and you play it like one of those.
You need at least four people (or two teams), and the idea is that you actually pass the iPad around from player to player, each time getting a phrase that everyone else needs to guess

Chitika: Third-gen model already 6.6 percent of all US iPads
On the same day that Apple has debuted the new iPad in an additional 25 countries, a study by a mobile ad network Chitika Insights says that in the US, the third-generation iPad now accounts for 6.65 percent of all iPad web traffic, despite having only been on sale for a week. Interestingly, usage patterns in states where Chitika was able to gauge percentages show a strong western US popularity for the new model, AppleInsider reports.

Hulu Plus expands to Toshiba Blu-ray players, more

BiKN iPhone case and tags: Finding everything that matters
Last month I did a review of the Zomm Wireless Leash Plus, a dongle that works with your iPhone and Bluetooth to find your keys or whatever else you happen to attach the dongle to. Microsoft has tried to bring its "Smoked by Windows Phone" contests to the mainstream with a new contest at its retail stores. Customers from now until March 29 can visit a Microsoft Store and see if their existing smartphone is faster at accomplishing certain kinds of tasks, such as posting to a social network, faster than Windows Phone hardware.
