Daily iPhone App: Save My Telly builds a new twist on physics puzzlers
Save My Telly is the first physics puzzler game I've seen in a while that really surprised me. When I say "physics puzzler," you probably think Angry Birds or Cut the Rope, and these days on iPhone, 90% of the time you'd be right. But Save My Telly, which began as a Flash game that you can also play for free right here, is talking about a different kind of physics, really. In the game, you need to use physically modeled objects not to destroy, but to build.

Developer: iOS 5.1 adopted by majority of users in 15 days
Apple may be experiencing an unusually high adoption rate for iOS 5.1, according to data collected by app developer David Smith. After tracking iOS version statistics for downloads of his app Audiobooks, Smith noticed that more than half of the devices that were eligible for the iOS 5.1 over-the-air update had made the jump within five days.

Dot color explains why colors look so nice on the new iPad
Jeff Yurek of Dot Color spent some time exploring the color performance of the new iPad. He, like many others, noticed that the colors on the iPad were richer than the iPad 2 and hypothesized that Apple improved the color filters.
After analyzing various spectrum charts, he concludes that Apple limits the light leakage of the display by improving the color filters. You can see the improvement in an example photo on his website. The side-by-side shot shows a greenish hue leaking through the blue on the iPad 2, and the rich blue of the iPad third generation.

FTC to release online privacy guidelines on March 26
The FTC on Friday posted word that it would reveal the finished version of its online privacy framework on March 26. Details of what it would involve weren't mentioned, although it would likely derive some of its practices from recommended "do not track" policy that would let web visitors guarantee they weren't having their details collected as they browsed, whether through cookies or otherwise. Input over the past year and a half from both the public and companies should have influenced the results.

Xbox 360's Comcast Xfinity TV app in beta testing, won't count against data caps when it launches
We're still waiting for the Comcast Xfinity TV app to appear on our Xbox 360 dashboards, but word is its beta tests have expanded to cover more Microsoft and Comcast employees, and it could launch as soon as the next week or so. Dutch to try 'iPad schools' to advance education
The Netherlands is trying a major experiment where the iPad wouldn't just play a role in education but would be the centerpiece. The Education for a New Era effort would see three to five schools change from the traditional approach and use the iPad as a primary learning tool. While the exact method would wait until a formal proposal, it would encourage Dutch children to learn "21st century skills."

Design matters with Sonastand, a tiny acoustic amplifier
Apple is well-known for its precision crafting and impeccable industrial design, but there are many smaller companies that also wrestle with materials, form and function. Rdio inks deal to license UK music, but doesn't offer up a visit date
One of those other music subscription services has inched towards British shores, announcing a licensing deal with PRS for Music, a not-for-profit organization representing around 85,000 songwriters and music publishers. The San Francisco-made music service has already launched across Europe, the US and Brazil, but still remains out of reach for Brits. While it's far from a confirmation of intent, the service might have plans to jump across to the land of royalty, Rich Tea biscuits and RPattz pretty soon.

Rumor: MOG bought for $12m, Beats just a proxy for HTC
Beats Audio's increasingly corroborated acquisition of MOG is now thought by sources to have not only been completed but ultimately a shell operation. The anonymous insiders near MOG told GigaOM that MOG had sold for just under $12 million. Although Beats made the purchase itself, it was HTC funding the deal, according to claims.

AT&T tries to link T-Mobile job cuts to lack of merger
AT&T's Senior Executive VP Jim Cicconi in remarks tried to seize on T-Mobile's job cuts as validation for why its failed takeover of T-Mobile should have been cleared. He contended that AT&T would have kept the jobs if the $39 billion deal had been approved. To him, the cuts were purportedly proof that the FCC had been wrong and that it should never challenge corporations on competition issues.

Audiolio: A multitasking note-taking and audio recording app for iPad
There are a ton of note-taking apps for the iPad, since the portable hands-on device is so analogous to the traditional pen and notepad. Many of these apps also allow a way to record audio in the background as you take notes. Sources pin LTE iPhone to fall timeframe
The next-generation iPhone will have LTE, and should ship in the fall, according to iMore sources. The site notes that LTE may almost be a given, since the cellular technology is already an option for the third-generation iPad. The fall timetable is still in dispute, but iMore says it has learned that a previously-reported October 2012 target is still likely Apple's plan.

Das beliebteste iPhone 4S ist das Modell mit 16 GB Speicher. Mehr als die Hälfte der Käufer griffen zum kleinsten 4S.

Study: 2012 LTE phone shipments to jump 10X via iPhone, more
Global LTE phone shipments may jump by a factor of ten this year, according to an outlook report published by research firm Strategy Analytics. The total number of LTE-equipped handsets is expected to reach 67 million units, up from 6.8 million units in 2011, as the technology is embraced by companies such as Apple.

Nokia may pay $25m to make Lumia 900 'official' AT&T phone
Nokia may try to overcome stigmas about buying Windows Phone by seeding AT&T's retail staff with free phones. Apparent leaks to WPCentral have Nokia paying as much as $25 million to let staff take free Lumia 900 phones in a Company Use program. Workers wouldn't be forced to use the Lumia, but they would have to trade in whatever they have.

This waif of a tablet certainly took its sweet time getting here. We first laid eyes on this lightweight beauty last August and while it still hasn't landed in the US just yet (under the guise of the Excite 10 LE) we've brought in the international version -- already in stores in the UK -- to test out the hardware, which appears to be identical. Datenschutz: US-Kongress verlangt Aussagen von 34 iOS-Entwicklern
Anfang Februar gab es einen kleinen Aufschrei in der Smartphone-Gemeinde, nachdem bekannt wurde, dass Path und andere Apps ohne vorherige Nachfrage die Adressbücher ihrer Nutzer teilweise im Klartext auf die eigenen Server übertragen haben. Jetzt fordert der US-Kongress eine Stellungnahme von diversen Entwicklern.
Wie The Next Web berichtet, wurden insgesamt 34 Entwickler von dem Vorsitzenden des “Committee on Energy and Commerce” Fred Upton und Henry Waxman um Stellung gebeten.
Zu den betroffenen Entwicklern gehören primär die Entwicker von Apps aus der App-Store-Kategorie Soziale Netzwerke, darunter unter anderem

Digital gaming soars nine percent, still knows nothing of rarity value
It's already chewed up some big names on the retail scene, but the game-downloading trend shows no sign of being sated. Fresh figures from market research firm NPD show that American digital game sales (including rentals and DLC) amounted to $2.04 billion in the fourth quarter of 2011, which represents a nine percent year-on-year hike at a time when physical game transactions fell three percent. Things are going the same way across the Atlantic, with the UK, France and Germany adding a further $1.29 billion to the burgeoning click-to-buy market. NVIDIA: MacBook Air, Tegra ultrabooks 'hollow out' cheap PCs
NVIDIA's mobile lead Rene Haas in a conversation published overnight saw both his own company and Apple squeezing out traditional low-end notebooks. He explained to CNET that, just as Apple's MacBook Air had mostly killed the need for a "middle" system between the ultraportable and the faster MacBook Pro, NVIDIA would serve both Tegra-based mobile devices at the low end and graphics-heavy, performance-based notebooks on top. It was the stereotypical Windows notebook, which didn't have any of the performance edges or the portability, that was most at risk.

Und schon wieder finden sich in den Mountain Lion Developer Previews Hinweise darauf, dass demnächst auch die ersten Macs mit Retina Displays kommen werden. In Messages z.B. finden sich diverse Icons in Übergröße und wir wären wirklich bereit für einen Übergang vom grandiosen iPad Display auch auf den Schreibtisch. 15-Zoll Retina Displays dürften aber technisch eine große Herausforderung sein.Permal

Apple stock trading resumes after brief price crash
Apple shares are back in trading on the NASDAQ after a brief freeze, Business Insider reports. Earlier on Friday morning Apple's stock price plummeted 9 percent to $542.80, at which point the NASDAQ decided to halt buying and selling. The price drop appears to be linked to a faulty trade on the BATS electronic trading exchange, which allows investments outside of the major stock exchanges.

Pew Internet surveyed 1,021 technology stakeholders and critics and asked them about the future of apps and the web. Unlike many surveys, this latest one from Pew doesn't have a single, unifying answer. Instead, the survey highlights the diverse opinions that exist about how we will use native apps and web apps in the future.
Rob Scott, the chief technology officer for Nokia, believes the web will dominate and argues, "Once HTML5 browsers and fully capable Web runtimes are in place on the common Kindle through iPhone, the Web app will begin replacing native apps."

Amazon data center guru questions logic of Apple's solar farm
James Hamilton is a former datacenter architect for Microsoft and the current datacenter guy for Amazon. High-res Mountain Lion art could point to Retina Macs in 2012
Apple developers test-driving the latest Mountain Lion (10.8) release may have noticed some higher-res graphics erroneously popping up in "unexpected places," such as the double-size phone icon that appears alongside an audio chat invitation in Messages. New iPad continues to charge after the meter says 100%
As pointed out by Ars Technica, a report on the iPad by Dr. Raymond M. Soneira of DisplayMate suggests the tablet device is not fully charged even when the on-screen meter says 100 percent. Dr. Soneira told Ars that he "measured the power actually drawn by the AC Adapter and found that the new iPad continues to charge for up to 1 hour after it claims to reach 100 percent." He added that "other tablets and smartphones also lie about their charging status," too.
For folks who want to get the maximum juice out of their battery, Dr. Soneira suggests letting your iPad sit in its charging station for longer than the screen recommends. The new iPad takes over five hours to charge from a zero percent state,

Fresh data from Localytics of iPad Internet traffic has shown that just six percent of users actively use a 3G or 4G connection. Although about 10.3 percent of the devices themselves were cellular-capable, those who had sprung for the extra connection still spent most of their time on Wi-Fi. China Unicom saw a 14 percent bump in profits for 2011, with company execs attributing much of that gain to its exclusivity deal on the iPhone. Best Buy iPhone share approaches Apple numbers
The number of Americans buying iPhones from Best Buy is just under the number buying them from Apple itself, according to a Consumer Intelligence Research Partners survey. The firm polled people in December, January, and February to learn where they picked up their devices. Retail stores accounted for 76 percent of iPhone sales, compared to 24 percent online. The ratios were 67 percent and 33 percent during the launch of the iPhone 4S in October.

Google Earth for iOS offers custom map viewing
Google updated Google Earth for iOS this week and included the ability to view custom maps. The new feature lets you click on a KML file you find on the web and open it automatically in Google Earth. KML is short for "Keyhole Markup Language" and these files contain geographic information that you can view in software like Google Earth and Google Maps. Bekommt Köln noch dieses Jahr seinen eigenen Apple Store?
Köln soll angeblich noch dieses Jahr seinen ersten Apple Store bekommen. Laut Gerüchten hat sich der Apfelkonzern schon auf die Suche nach neuen Mitarbeitern begegeben.
Aktuell gibt es acht Apple Stores in Deutschland. Viel zu wenig, vor allem für alle Apple-Fans, in denen Heimatstadt nicht gerade ein appleeigenes Geschäft seine Produkte anbietet. Auch in Köln wartet man schon lange auf einen Apple Store, doch das Warten könnte bald ein Ende haben.

RIM hiring iOS developers
On Thursday, John Paczkowski of AllThingsD wrote about a job listing at RIM for a senior iOS developer and wondered why the beleaguered Canadian company would want an Objective-C expert on staff. The explanation eventually provided by RIM suggests this hiring is not as controversial as it first seems.
According to RIM's statement, the company needs an iOS developer to code a handset management client for the iPhone and iPad. The iOS software is part of a larger, cross-platform product called BlackBerry Mobile Fusion, which lets companies manage iOS, BlackBerry and Android devices on their network.

RIM: Erstmals weniger BlackBerries als iPhones in Kanada verkauft
Im Kampf um Smartphone-Marktanteile muss der BlackBerry-Hersteller Research in Motion (RIM) einen symbolträchtigen Rückschlag hinnehmen: Auch auf dem heimischen kanadischen Markt liegt Apple nunmehr vor RIM. Im Jahr 2011 standen 2,08 Millionen BlackBerries 2,85 Millionen iPhones gegenüber.

Rovio: no plans for Angry Birds Space on Windows Phone 7
A notable, and somewhat surprising, omission from yesterdayís global launch of Angry Birds Space across multiple platforms was a Windows Phone 7 version. In what may amount to a significant blow to the prestige and perceived value of the Windows Phone 7 platform, Angry Birds Space developer Rovio told Bloomberg that it has no plans at all for a WP7 version. Enhanced Edition von Baldur's Gate für iPad angekündigt

Apple TV: Download-Probleme mit iTunes in der Cloud
Wer in den vergangenen Stunden versuchte mit dem Apple TV Filme oder sonstige Inhalte aus iTunes in der Cloud zu laden, wurde mitunter von einer Fehlermeldung begrüßt. Die besagte, dass das gewünschte Material aktuell nicht heruntergeladen werden kann.
Eine Suche im Web, ob man mit der Fehlermeldung alleine war, brachte schnell Ernüchterung, wie auch auch The Next Web berichtete. In Apples Diskussionsforen mehrten sich in den vergangenen Stunden die Meldungen von Benutzern, die über dasselbe Problem klagten.

Angry Birds Space won't land on Windows Phone, Redmond gets no stars
While no doubt swathes of Android and iOS users have experienced massive productivity slumps since Angry Birds Space came out this week, Windows Phone users will be left staring at their spreadsheets. Cyberport: Neuer Mobile-Shop

Neues iPad: Batterieanzeige ungenau – Bilder in Safari mit nur einem Megapixel

Auch Facebook steigt schon mal vorsorglich in den Kampf um die Patentrechte ein, damit sie in Zukunft etwas beim großen Poker auf den Tisch zu legen zu haben. Bislang haben sie 56 eigene und 503 anstehende Patente in den USA, und war letzten Monat schon von Yahoo! verklagt worden, aufgrund irgendwelcher Webseiten-Funktionen bezüglich Privacy, Werbung und Sharing. Film-Trailer: Apple aktualisiert App für iPad-Retina Display
Wer das Retina Display des neuen iPad genießen will, möchte sich auch Videos in voller HD-Auflösung ansehen. Viele hübsche Videos bietet Apples “iTunes Movie Trailers”-App, die Apple aber bisher noch nicht ans Retina Display angepasst hatte. In einer neuen Version 1.1 hat das Unternehmen das nun nachgeholt.
Die App bietet die gleiche Datenbank wie Apples Movie-Trailers-Website, auf der das Unternehmens seit Jahren aktuelle Film-Trailer veröffentlicht. Nach dem Update zeigt die App die Videos in voller HD-Auflösung an – die allerdings noch unter der Auflösung des iPad-Display selbst liegt.
Die App ist 3,2 Megabyte groß und sowohl fürs iPhone als auch iPad konzipiert. Mindestvoraussetzung ist das iOS 4.3.

The percentage of passengers willing to pay between $5 and $13 for Internet access on flights has doubled in a little over a year to more than eight percent, and is expected to hit 10 percent by the end of the year, research firm In-Stat reports. Users report issues with iCloud on Apple TV, already fixed
Apple confirmed an issue with iTunes in the Cloud earlier this evening that was preventing some users from streaming or downloading content from their iCloud account for a short period, AppleInsider reports. The issue appears to have begun around 6:30 p.m. Eastern time but was apparently resolved around two and a half hours later, judging from reports in an Apple Support community thread.

Google Play's Movies section may be steered into offering full movie sales against Google's own will. Multiple movie industry contacts described a situation to CNET where Google was interested in offering the service, but primarily as it was required to get any rentals from certain studios. Apple tweaks iTunes Movie Trailers app for new iPads
Slightly too late for the launch, Apple has updated its iTunes Movie Trailers app (App Store) to take advantage of the new iPad. Updating to 1.1 boosts both the interface and video to take advantage of the much denser display resolution. Apple hasn't said what video resolution it's using for streams; the new iPad can handle 1080p natively, but earlier models would have to drop back to 720p at most.

Intel said readying SSD 320, 720 for May with 800GB space
Intel's SSD 520 should be joined by two multi-model launches this year. New roadmap leaks to Digitimes have Intel unveiling a new budget 300 series drive, Maple Crest, and a new 720 series, Ramsdale. Daily iPad App: The Lost Shapes builds a puzzle connection
The Lost Shapes is a recently released puzzle game that's not a bad title. You have a queue of tiles with lines and corners on them on the side of the screen, and you're meant to tap them out in order to make certain shapes. It's like Tetris, sort of: You have to manage both the queue of pieces coming down, as well as try to switch around shapes on the board to try and line things up in as few moves as possible.
There's both a survival mode and a shape mode. The first just asks you to put together as many shapes as you can for as long as possible, and the second gives you some target shapes to make. Austin approves $8.6M incentive package for Apple campus
The Austin City Council has voted unanimously in favor of an $8.6 million incentive package for Apple, as part of a $304 million deal to expand operations in the city. Combined with money from the state-level Texas Enterprise Fund and some tax breaks from the affected county government, Apple will see a total of $33.5 million in incentives in exchange for 3,600 new high-quality administrative and engineering jobs.

Apple loses appeal in Italian AppleCare case
Apple has lost an appeal in Italy over the terminology used in its AppleCare agreements sold in that country, and will face fines totalling $1.2 million for what the Italian Antitrust Authority deemed "bad commercial policies" and not properly informing buyers of differences between Italian warranty law and Apple's preferred policies. Report: iCloud data secure, not shared or scanned
An investigation by Ars Technica into the levels of security used by Apple to protect data uploaded to iCloud has found that data should be "at least as safe as data stored on any remote server, if not more so" and that almost none of the data is shared with third parties apart from that required for a credit card transaction, which may compare iCloud favorably to similar cloud storage run by services such as Google or Amazon.
