Path 2.1 update adds Nike+, Music Match and a new filter
I've been a fan and user of social networking app Path (free) for some time, even after it it was disclosed that the company was uploading iPhone Contacts to their servers. The company has now released an update to the app, adding some features that might bring miffed former users back to the Path fold. Path 2.1, available today, has one new feature that may help you on the running path. Music Unlimited app arrives on PlayStation Vita, Android version gets offline play
Listening to music isn't the best reason to take the plunge with the PS Vita. However, a new feature's a new feature, and Sony's very happy to tell you that its own subscription-based Music Unlimited service has arrived on UK devices, courtesy of its own dedicated app. Now you've had your fill of the games, Twitter and Facebook apps, it must be time to integrate with Sony's verticals and hand over more cash. Angelina: the experimental AI that's coming for our game dev jobs
Ok so, maybe Angelina couldn't have created Skyrim all on her own, but the experimental AI from Michael Cook (a computer scientist at Imperial College London) is still quite impressive. The artificial dev is able program enemy behavior, layout levels, and distribute power ups with random attributes. While many elements of a game like Space Station Invaders (which you can play at the more coverage link) are designed by human hands, it's Angelina's ability to act as a composer building something fun from the various ingredients that's so interesting. Microsoft worried OnLive Desktop using Windows illegally
Microsoft has warned its partners and outsourcers that certain forms of Windows 7 in cloud services might be out of bounds. In most cases, the partner's customers themselves must hold valid Microsoft license agreements. The advisory has come in the wake of allegations that software-as-a-service provider OnLive may be using Windows and Office illegally in the way it streams from servers to users.

Is the new Journal feature in iPhoto for iOS the start of something bigger?
I certainly hope so. One of the joys of using a Mac with MobileMe was that someone with little or no computer sophistication could get photos easily published to the web. Great for families sharing with distant relatives and friends, or anyone who needed to get a gallery of photos to the internet only had to make a couple of quick clicks and it was done. It was sad when Apple announced the demise of MobileMe, which goes dark this June, and the loss of MobileMe galleries. Photo Stream is cool, but the photos expire after a month. Many Apple customers were hoping for a replacement for those galleries,

Apple told to wait on lawsuits during Kodak bankruptcy
Kodak was successful on Thursday in preventing Apple from resuming patent lawsuits. Bankruptcy court jduge Allan Gropper deemed it "inappropriate" for Apple to either resume its lawsuit against Kodak, or to try and sue again, during the one-time camera legend's bankruptcy process. Judge Gropper was willing to have a quick resolution during bankruptcy, but he wanted a method that "truly works" rather than simply resuming an extant case.

Verizon iPad will have hotspot support at launch
The Verizon version of the new iPad will have personal hotspots enabled at launch, carrier spokeswoman Brenda Raney says. "Yes, we currently have hotspots on other tablets, and we will continue to support it," she tells CNET. "We will support the iPad mobile hotspot at launch." Other Verizon spokespeople were initially unclear about support.

Path 2.1 adds Nike+ updates, music ID
Path updated its self-titled iOS app (App Store) Thursday to uniquely combine features from other activities in its social stream. By using a newly available API to plug other services into Path, the title can now automatically posts Nike+ GPS runs as generated by the Nike app, taking them once they've reached the cloud. A Shazam-like music matching feature can now identify nearby music and provide a link to buy it in iTunes.

RadioShack opens up third-gen iPad pre-orders
A day after the start of Apple's own efforts, electronics retailer RadioShack has started pre-orders for the third-generation iPad. Shoppers must pay for a $50 gift card, although the card can be used towards picking up an iPad. Like Apple, RadioShack will carry the tablet in stores on March 16th.

News: RadioShack accepting third-gen iPad pre-orders
RadioShack has announced that it is now taking pre-orders for the third-generation iPad. In order to facilitate the pre-orders, the retailer is requiring pre-order customers to buy a $50 RadioShack gift card, which can then be used towards the final purchase. NVIDIA disputes Apple's claim that A5X processor outperforms Tegra 3
During yesterday's Apple event, senior VP of worldwide marketing Phil Schiller took the stage to tout the power of the new A5X processor that inhabits the innards of the latest iPad. Schiller stood in front of a chart showing the relative graphics performance of the NVIDIA Tegra 3, the Apple A5 (2x the performance of the Tegra 3), and the new A5X (4x the performance). Judge says Apple can't pursue patent infringement case against Kodak
Apple was dealt a setback today in its efforts to prevent Kodak from selling up to $2.6 billion worth of digital imaging patents, with U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Allan Gropper ruling that it would be an "inappropriate way forward" to allow Apple to pursue patent litigation against the bankrupt company. HTC Droid Incredible 4G parties down with FCC, ready for Verizon?
Can't get enough of the FCC approval gossip? For some reason, neither can we. In the middle of what seems like a flood of new devices trying to get prepped for their inevitable US debut, the HTC PJ53100 appears to stand out above many of the rest. Why? It's boasting LTE band 13, which is Verizon's piece of 700MHz real estate. And while it doesn't come right out and proudly proclaim exactly what it is, we're rather certain this is the HTC Droid Incredible HD -- also known as the Fireball. Any other details? Nothing worth writing home about, sadly, but we have a feeling we'll be seeing a lot more of this smartphone pretty darn soon.

Microsoft putting Windows Mobile 6.x market out to pasture
Are you still out there rockin' a Windows Mobile device? And, yes, notice we did not say "Windows Phone." NPD: Apple loose with iPad Retina Display definitions
Apple is operating relatively loosely with how it defines the term "Retina Display" for the new iPad, argues NPD DisplaySearch. The research firm notes, for example, that the iPad's 264ppi pixel density is substantially less than the 326ppi on the iPhone 4. "But since 'retina display' is a marketing term with no specific definition, Apple is able to use it how it wants," NPD writes.

Samsung asks for urgent hearing vs. Apple in Australia
Samsung on Thursday filed for an interlocutory application with a Federal Court in Australia asking for a sudden hearing in its legal conflict with Apple. While details of the request weren't clear, it would be held late Friday morning in Sydney time by Justice Annabelle Bennett, who has overseen many of the previous hearings between the two. It's suspected so far that the hearing may be an attempt to block sales of the new iPad and use this as a surprise bargaining chip.

Verizon to offer low-cost 1GB plan, mobile hotspot with iPad
There's been a fair amount of confusion about the data plans that'll accompany the 4G version of the iPad. The Verge got the definitive answer from AT&T and Verizon on each carrier's plans and whether it will offer mobile hotspot with the iPad. In a nutshell, Verizon offers a better value as it offers more plans and bundles mobile hotspot for free. Verizon confirmed that it will offer four data plans for the new iPad including a 1 GB plan for US$20, a 2 GB plan for $30, a 5 GB for $50 and a 10 GB plan for $80. As noted above, each plan includes free mobile hotspot that draws off the data allotment. AT&T will have three data plans which start at 250 MB for $14.99 with overage fees of $14.99 per 250M

Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket HD for AT&T gets the FCC nod
To its credit, AT&T's version of the Samsung Galaxy S II HD LTE -- known as the Skyrocket HD -- has managed to elude its fair share of Mr. Blurrycams and other leaks for a full two months since it was originally announced at the carrier's Developer Summit. Now the device, listed as the SGH-I757, has stepped one foot closer to the daylight, thanks to the FCC looking it up and down and nodding in approval. Apple A5X: NVIDIA will Benchmark-Tests sehen
Gestern hat Apple in San Francisco das neue iPad offiziell vorgestellt. Auf der Präsentation wurde unter anderem eine Folie gezeigt, auf der ein Vergleich zwischen dem neuen Apple A5X Chip und dem NVIDIA Tegra 3 gemacht wird. Laut Apple soll der neue A5X im Vergleich zum Tegra 3 die vierfache Grafikleistung abliefern können. Nun meldet sich NVIDIA zu Wort und verlangt Benchmark-Tests von Apple.
Wir wissen alle natürlich, wie erfolgreich NVIDIA auf dem PC-Markt ist, deshalb kann man auch erwarten, dass NVIDIA auch für mobile Geräte ordentliche Grafikchips herstellen kann. Der NVIDIA Tegra 3 ist auch der erste Chip mit Quad-Core-Prozessor, der Grafikchip besitzt sogar 12 Kerne. Deshalb kann ich NVIDIAs Reaktion auch nachvollziehen.

C Spire restarts LTE rollout, aims for September launch in Mississippi
After missing its year-end 2011 target date, C Spire is once again set to get its LTE network up and running -- this time with a more realistic fall launch. Proview calls for sales ban of new iPad in China
On the same day Apple announced its new iPad, Chinese company Proview released an open letter claiming it owns the trademark for the iPad in China, says a Macworld report. In the letter, Proview reportedly warned suppliers and vendors that they will face legal action if they don't stop the sale, storing and shipment of Apple's latest iPad. For better or worse, our week in the frigid German city of Hannover has come to a close, bringing with it the end of this locale's days-long tourist season. HP acknowledges complaints about the HP Envy 15's color calibration, will release a tuning utility in the 'coming weeks'
If you remember, we had some mixed feelings about the HP Envy 15's IPS display when we took the laptop for a spin earlier this year. On the one hand, it offers great viewing angles and rich saturation. (Not to mention, when are we ever going to complain about 1080p resolution on a 15-incher?) Verizon will support Mobile Hotspot on the new iPad, AT&T still working on it
It's no secret that the new iPad will offer the ability to share a data connection with other devices through a mobile hotspot, but the feature doesn't do any good if your wireless network doesn't offer it. Representatives from Verizon and AT&T sent tweets this morning that raised more questions than they answered, leaving us concerned that both companies had decided not to allow the hotspot capability at all. Favs für Mac: Sammelbecken für Likes, Favoriten und +1er
Wer kennt es nicht: Über den Tag verteilt klickt man hier und da auf ein “Gefällt mir”, favorisiert mal einen Tweet, +1′t ein Foto und vergibt auf Youtube ein “Daumen hoch”. Doch kaum “geliked” ist das tolle Foto, Video, etc. auch schon in den Tiefen der Social Networks unauffindbar verschwunden.
Man erliegt dem Irrglauben, dass ein “Like” gleichbedeutend mit dem Setzen eines Lesezeichens ist und man das witzige Babykatzen-Video von vor 2 Wochen jederzeit wiederfinden kann. Paper Monsters iOS-Plattformspiel jetzt auch im Mac App Store
Eine verbesserte Version von Paper Monsters ist seit letzter Woche im Mac App Store verfügbar. Der 2D-Side-Scroller ist ebenfalls in Versionen für iPhone und iPad vorhanden, und ähnelt vom Spielprinzip durchaus Super-Mario-Titeln. AT&T, Verizon won't support personal hotspots on 4G iPad [u]
(Updated with AT&T statement) The two US carriers of the new iPad, AT&T and Verizon, have no current plans to support personal hotspots with it, according to official Twitter posts. Qantas tests Wi-Fi on Australia-to-US flights
Australian airline operator Qantas has started an eight-week trial of in-flight Wi-Fi as of Wednesday. Dubbed Surf Sky High, the service will be available to first- and business-class travelers with Wi-Fi devices including notebooks, smartphones, and tablets. Certain Qantas A380 planes will be equipped with the Wi-Fi gear, traveling on routes from either Melbourne or Sydney to Los Angeles and back.

Dell plans tablet day-and-date for Windows 8, claims demand
Dell's namesake founder Michael Dell in an interview (video below) let slip that his company was planning to be one of the very first with a Windows 8 tablet. The company not only wanted to be in early but would have a tablet on sale "the exact day" Windows 8 was shipping, alluding for Bloomberg to a direct collaboration with Microsoft. Shipping times begin to slip for third-gen iPads
Shipping times for the new iPad are finally beginning to slip at the company's US online store. While most pre-orders will still be delivered on March 16th, white 16 and 64GB AT&T models are now due to arrive three days later, on the 19th. OpenStreetMap confirms Apple use, says it's out of spec
Discoveries late Wednesday that Apple had dropped Google Maps data in iPhoto for iOS were reinforced Thursday after OpenStreetMap confirmed that its data was being used for the app. Information for at least non-US areas was being derived from the crowd-sourced mapping. While not said, any cosmetic changes were Apple's work, something it's allowed to do as long as it doesn't alter data.

Angry Birds Space gameplay gets revealed -- briefly (video)
We've already gleaned that the extra-terrestrial edition of Angry Birds will involve some sort of gameplay departure from the add-on style of previous versions, but gameplay-wise there's been less information. Apple using OpenStreetMap data in iPhoto for iPad
If you purchased the new iPhoto for iOS yesterday, you may be surprised by the map tiles in the app. As noticed by 512 pixels, they are not from Google Maps. After some initial confusion over the source of the map data, the OpenStreetMap Foundation confirmed that Apple is using map data from the OpenStreetMap project. Apple is using the OpenStreetMap data to render its own tiles in iPhoto. The map data Apple uses in iPhoto is supposedly old (circa 2010) and is used without attribution, a situation OpenStreetMap is working with Apple to remedy. Verizon-bound LG Lucid reveals itself in leaked press shots
Aside from the Optimus Vu, last week's MWC didn't reveal all that many LTE-capable handsets from LG. Fortunately, the Life's Good crowd still have plans for Verizon -- and this is one of them. Epic worried Microsoft, Nintendo, Sony will let Apple win
Epic Games is concerned that Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony might let Apple take over in gaming by being too conservative with their hardware, the developer's VP Mark Rein said in a discussion this week at the Game Developer Conference. The Bulletstorm and Gears of War creator told CVG his company was "constantly pushing" hardware designers to make high-end systems to give a clear incentive to pick their systems over what Apple makes. Kein LTE für das neue iPad in Österreich, Deutschland, Schweiz

Though Apple is forthcoming about processor specs and display resolution, the company often fails to mention the amount of RAM inside its devices. iOS 5.1 gets a tethered jailbreak for non-A5 iPads, iPhones and iPods
The iPhone Dev Team has updated redsn0w to support a tethered 5.1 jailbreak for non-A5 devices. This means it'll only work with the original iPad and the iPhone 4 and older devices. The tethered jailbreak also apparently breaks iBooks, a bug which will be fixed in a future version of redsn0w. You can download the jailbreak tool from the iPhone Dev Team's website. I'm always on the lookout for free apps from the App Store, and I've found an interesting shopping app that's worth a look. The app is called ShopAdvisor (iPad edition) and it's the kind of app that would get a lot of use in this household. Think of a product you're considering purchasing. Enter it into ShopAdvisor and it finds the lowest price, both online and in local retail stores. You can opt to receive an alert if the price drops. It can also provide pros and cons of a pending purchase. ShopAdvisor displays the most popular item in several categories. In electronics, by the way, the iPad is running away with the top votes. Proview warns Chinese businesses against selling iPad
Proview Shenzhen has issued an open letter to dealers and vendors in China, warning them not to sell the iPad, according to the Associated Press. The company threatens "the most severe measures" against anyone using "IPAD" or a similar trademark. Following the announcement of the third-generation iPad, Apple has dropped its pricing on refurbished iPad 2 units. Gartner: PCs to grow just 4.4% in 2012 as tablets keep hold
PC sales won't significantly bounce back in 2012, Gartner estimated on Thursday. Analysts saw shipments growing just 4.4 percent this year over last, to 368 million units, as PC builders played "catch-up" to tablets and other mobile hardware in interesting features. iOS 5.1 gets early tethered jailbreak for pre-A5 devices
The iPhone Dev Team has detailed a very early jailbreak method for the now official iOS 5.1 update. Beta 6 of redsn0w 0.9.10 will crack all devices based on the A4 and earlier. With the exception of iPhone 3GS units with older firmware, however, the jailbreak is tethered and will need to be reused every time the device is given a hard reboot.

Patentstreit: Samsung dementiert Berichte über Apples Angebot einer Einigung
Gestern gab es erste Berichte, dass Apple angeblich einigen Konkurrenten eine Einigung im Patentstreit angeboten habe. Diese Berichte wurden nun von Samsung dementiert.
Gegenüber dem Korea Herald (via The Next Web) sagte ein Samsung-Sprecher: “Aktuell können wir die Berichte nicht bestätigen, es ist aber nicht korrekt, dass wir dringendes Meeting bezüglich dieser Problematik hatten.”

We've got good news for anyone intrigued by the new (largely incremental) features of Apple's latest mobile OS update. MuscleNerd, famed iOS meddler, has confirmed that iOS 5.1 can be jailbroken to the original iPad, iPhone 4 and 3rd and 4th generation iPod Touch devices. Tüftler von Microsoft Research führen vor, wie man Interaktion via Touch und Gesten weg vom Smartphone- oder Tablet-Bildschirm auf eine beliebige Oberfläche bringt - beispielsweise auf eine Wand, Handfläche oder ein Blatt Papier. Dazu kombinierten sie eine Kamera mit Tiefensensor und einen kleinen Pico-Projektor mit einem PC. Intego: new Flashback variant masquerades as Software Update
A new malware threat dubbed Flashback.N, is actually a variant of an older one, claims anti-virus software maker Intego in a new blog post. Users who visit hacked or maliciously-crafted websites may see a delay, followed by a false password-request dialog box claiming to be from "Software Update." If accidentally installed, the malware inserts code into Safari's resources and will attempt to search network traffic for user names and passwords.

Google Chrome compromised in five minutes at Pwn2Own
Google saw an end to a brief streak on Wednesday after CanSecWest's organizers confirmed that Chrome had been hacked during the Pwn2Own contest. Team Vupen exploited a security hole in the browser within five minutes of the contest's start. The group will be getting at least a $60,000 prize, funded partly by Google itself, as well as 32 points in the still-ongoing contest; it had already found two more vulnerabilities in software at the conference in intervening hours.

Hands-on with iPhoto for iOS
Apple has released iPhoto for iOS, a $4.99 version of the consumer-grade Mac photo management app. While the Apple marketing gears it toward the iPad, it can definitely be used on the iPhone. This completes Apple's porting of the iLife apps to its mobile platforms, and it's arguably one of the strongest of these ports. For this review, we're focusing on the iPad. iPhoto doesn't take the place of Photos on the iPad but works alongside it. If you're familiar with iPhoto on the Mac, then this app won't be new. New iPad's LTE US plans detailed, will work in Europe
Apple's store page for the new iPad has confirmed expectations for US-based LTE data plans. Both AT&T and Verizon users will have the option of 2GB or 5GB of prepaid data for $30 and $50 for each month, respectively. AT&T users will still have the option of a very light $15, 250MB plan, while Verizon users can get 10GB a month if willing to pay $80.

Apple updates T & C, includes terms for demo licensing
Today, along with the update of iTunes, there was a really interesting update to the Terms and Conditions. You can check out the entire set of terms if you like, but here's the good bit: Certain paid In App Subscriptions may offer a free trial period prior to charging your Account. If you decide you do not want to purchase the In App Subscription, turn off auto-renewal in your Account settings during the free trial period. Looking at that bit of the terms, this looks a lot like the door is opening to allow what some have held up as the Holy Grail of App Store features: free trials. Nokia Lumia 610 pours out its insides to the FCC, gets accepted
The Nokia Lumia 610 hasn't officially found a home in the US, but that doesn't stop it from paying the good 'ol FCC a visit either way. The entry-level Windows Phone sure put on quite the show, too, providing a full set of internal and external pics and a user manual. The device we saw offers 3G connectivity by way of 850 / 1900 radios to allow for AT&T compatibility, which means at the very least you'll be able to import one and get some proper use out of it, even if you don't see the Lumia 610 on a US carrier anytime soon. Sphero + keyboard + iPad = cacophonous synthy fun (video)
If you're not familiar with Shapesynth, it's a pretty sweet little synthesizer app for iOS that lets you draw waveforms and works with Akai's SynthStation. FCC releases approval of new iPad, Apple TV
The government's regulatory body on telecommunications and computer equipment, the FCC, has officially approved the new products announced today at Apple's event in San Francisco. The updated, 1080p-capable Apple TV, and three versions of the new iPad (Wi-Fi only, AT&T LTE and Verizon LTE) have been cleared for sale in the US. The reports included teardown pictures of the Apple TV but not the new iPad models.

Samsung cherry-picks in Galaxy Note 10.1 vs. new iPad
Samsung had an immediate reaction to the new iPad where it crafted a skewed comparison between Apple's new hardware and the Galaxy Note 10.1. Slew of iOS app updates from Apple accompany event

iPhoto for iOS drops Google Maps tile data
A search through iPhoto for iOS has discovered that Apple has dropped Google Maps tile data for the software. Checks by 512pixels showed that new app uses information that's both cosmetically different as well as based on different data, ranging from high-level terrain data to low-level urban coverage. A follow-up investigation by Holger Eilhard has shown that the tiles are being extracted from a gsp2.apple.com server and not Google.

Google plans unified gaming hub for Play, cross-platform titles a possibility

iOS 5.1 adds a 4G indicator for AT&T customers
iPhone owners on AT&T had a surprise waiting for them when they installed iOS 5.1 today. As noted by The Verge, the 3G label in the status bar was replaced with one for 4G. When the iPhone 4S was released, AT&T said it was pushing Apple to make this change on the iPhone 4S and it appears the company made good on this promise. AT&T wanted this 4G icon to distinguish its HSPA+ network from the 3G EV-DO network of Verizon. Though HSPA+ is technically not a 4G technology like LTE, it is faster than Verizon's 3G network. Apple releases iBooks 2.1 and new Find My iPhone
There's been a flurry of software activity from the Apple mothership today, and just when we think things are settling down, some new software appears. If you're on an iOS device you'll see a new version of iBooks, now at version 2.1. It's a redesign to support the new iPad Retina Display and adds a feature that lets page numbers correspond to the printed editions. This only works on some titles, but obviously the feature will be spreading to more and publications. Existing Apple TVs get update with new UI: hands-on
Apple through an update has given existing Apple TV owners the same software interface as for the new Apple TV hardware. We've tried it, and the upgrade replaces the text-heavy earlier interface with an easier-to-decipher icon layout. We found it quicker to use than before if you need to go into one of the third-party services, although scrolling down also hides previews of content that would normally be visible at the top.
