Amazon patents intelligent pen for adding annotations to digital and printed media
We wouldn't call it a comeback, but the stylus is definitely enjoying a mini-renaissance of sorts in the world of phablets. So it should come as no surprise to see Amazon patenting an intelligent input device (most likely a Kindle Pen), as well as a "computer-implemented method" for that associated accessory which can read, write, search, print and email annotations and highlights made on digital (ebooks and video) and physically printed works. Schiller: No live stream of iPad event
Apple Vice President of Worldwide Marketing Phil Schiller took to Twitter on Tuesday, announcing that there would be no live stream of Wednesday's special event, though the executive did confirm that a recording of the proceedings would be available for viewing on the company's website following the event's conclusion.

Few changes needed for new iPad accessories, makers say
While accessory makers have prepared new products for the next-generation iPad, most or all of these should work with the iPad 2, CNET reports. The site says it has heard from three company representatives who all say they expect the new iPad to have only minor changes in thickness, even if they're not absolutely certain. "We've been told there will be some minor changes in the thickness, but we don't have any specifics," one representative states.

NPD finds music buyers up for the second straight year
An NPD study has found that the number of music buyers has increased for the second straight year, following a period of decreases. Total music sales, including digital and CD, have gone up by four percent from 2010 to 2011. The total number of buyers has also increased, by two percent, to 78 million Americans.

Intel launches Xeon E5-2600, sets stage for Mac Pro
Intel ended one of the longest waits for one of its processors in recent memory on Tuesday by launching and detailing the Xeon E5-2600. Its mid-range server and workstation chip is a superset of the much newer Sandy Bridge-E architecture and can carry a full eight cores (up from six) and handle a much larger 768GB memory ceiling. The extra cores, along with a shrink from 45 to 32 nanometers and new AVX support, should make it about 80 percent faster than the Xeon 5600 it replaces.

Square takes on New York taxis with new iPad-based payment system
Anyone who finds themselves in a New York taxi over the next few weeks stands a slim chance of getting their hands on Square's latest experiment. As The New York Times reports, the company will soon begin rolling out the first phase of its new mobile payment system for taxis, which will see 30 cabs equipped with an iPad encased in a metal housing that also includes a credit card reader. That will let folks swipe their card, sign their name on the screen with their finger, and then receive a receipt on their phone either by text or email; taxi drivers are also able to interact with the system, dubbed "Checker," using their own iPhone app. U

Nintendo 3DS celebrates first birthday, sells 4.5 million consoles in the US
Nintendo of America has lifted the lid on how many 3DS handhelds were purchased in the first twelve months of life in the US of A. 4.5 million of the devices have been taken home since March 27th of last year, surpassing the 2.3 million classic DS units sold between 2004 - 2005. ROCCAT Studios lets gamers control PC with a smartphone

iOS 5.1 GM already through QA testing, report says
A Gold Master of iOS 5.1 has just emerged from three weeks of quality assurance testing, a Chronic Wire report claims. The testing is said to have included internal work at Apple, as well as efforts by "various carriers/partners." Rumored features include Japanese support in Siri, better camera access at the lock screen, and "at least" two new features that have yet to be leaked to the public.

Next iPad tipped getting more RAM, separate LTE versions
Another rumor surfacing less than a day before Apple's next-generation iPad event may have filled in some of the in-between details of the future iPad and the Apple TV. While recapping most of the common beliefs, such as the 2048x1536 display and sped-up A5X dual-core chip, The Verge understood there would be more RAM. Daily iPhone App: WorldView+
It's no secret I'm fond of webcams from around the world, and I'd forgotten about a little gem I downloaded long ago: WorldView+. As far as these apps go, WorldView+ has possibly the best design of all of them. Also, like many other webcam apps, it has some missing cameras (although it touts 10,000). But I have yet to find one app with the most comprehensive camera lists -- all are a compromise. That said, WorldView+ is one of the more functional and attractive "compromises" out there. Plus, it looks great on the iPad or iPhone. Sony VAIO Hybrid lands U moniker in leaked ad, not much else
Remember that Sony laptop / tablet hybrid that we spotted on the CES show floor? This past weekend, MLB.com At Bat 12 set two new launch records by drawing 2.9 million accesses and delivering 450,000 live audio and video streams. The mobile app, which allows users to follow every MLB baseball game, is currently focused on spring training but will be updated with new information prior to opening day. US company preemptively warns Apple against iTV name
A US company, iTV Entertainment, is preemptively pursuing Apple over the iTV name, according to a press release. "iTV Entertainment, LLC announced today that its counsel, Bart S. Fisher, had sent a letter to Apple, Inc. board director, Al Gore, suggesting that a meeting be held 'to see if an amicable and fair transaction arrangement' could be made between the parties with regard to Appleís use of the 'iTV' mark displayed throughout their U.S. Patent No. 2011/0154394 A1 for a product that is rumored to be in development by and being planned for a possible launch in 2012

Apple said willing to take royalties to end Android lawsuits
Apple is willing to end its legal action against Motorola and Samsung if they agree to take royalties, a discovery on Tuesday uncovered. Multiple sources for the Dow Jones understood that, in one case, it was asking between $5 to $15 per phone, or up to 2.5 percent of its net sales. Unlike Microsoft, however, it wasn't interested in using the patents as key source of income, just ending each case with an agreement that others were using its technology.

Samsung details pricing and availability for its 2012 Smart TV lineup

Intel intros Xeon E5-2600 family, finally ushers servers into the Sandy Bridge era
On the eve of the release of Ivy Bridge, Intel is finally bringing its server chips up to speed by introducing the Sandy Bridge-based E5-2600 family of CPUs. The company claims its latest processors outperform the previous generation of Xeons by up to 80 percent in raw speed, while improving per-watt performance by 50 percent. OS X 10.7.3: Ergänzendes (Mini-)Update behebt Problem mit Time Machine
Apple hat ein kleines Update veröffentlicht, das irgendwie gar nicht der Rede wert ist: Nur 38 KB klein, kein Neustart, aber doch notwendig. Apple has proposed settlements to both Motorola Mobility and Samsung in an effort to end some pending litigation, Dow Jones Newswires reports. comScore: Apple near overtaking Motorola in US cell ranks
Apple is near ousting Motorola as the third-largest phone builder operating in the US, comScore found in just-published data on Tuesday. Between the October launch of the iPhone 4S and January, Apple gained two percent of the total cellphone market, putting it at 12.8 percent. A small if continued declined from Motorola has put it at 13.2 percent, raising the chance that Apple will overtake even Motorola's combined share by the spring.

iPad embraced by small businesses; use quadruples in one year
While we've been hearing a lot about enterprise use of Apple's iPad, there hasn't been much attention paid to the millions of small businesses that are using the tablet. The Silicon Valley / San Jose Business Journal reported on a new national study that shows that small business use of the iPad has nearly quadrupled from 9 percent in 2010 to 34 percent in 2011. The study by the parent company of The Business Journals indicates that the iPad is now the fastest growing technology in the SMB (small and medium businesses) business sector. News: Russia reclassifies iPad as PC, drops 5% import tax

Russia reclassifies iPad as a computer, avoids 5% import tax
According to a report in the Russian newspaper Vedomosti, the Russian government has classified the iPad as computer. While this will bring a smile to analysts who love to compare iPad and PC sales, this move has nothing to do with the market category of the device. This change is an administrative one and lets Russian customers import the iPad without paying a 5 percent import tax. Previously, the iPad was taxed because the 3G version with GPS was classified as a navigation device. The report did not clarify whether the 3G iPad will still be considered a navigation device, but it did say other tablets with GPS will be subject to the tax.

I didn't like the previous releases of AP News for iPhone and iPad. They crashed a lot, were unattractive and generally bland to use. Top LulzSec members arrested, group leader reportedly acted as informant
The LulzSec hacking group may have officially called it quits last June, but that doesn't mean it was able to escape the eye of law enforcement. As Fox News reports, today saw three group members arrested and two more charged with conspiracy -- a move that one FBI official described as "chopping off the head of LulzSec." US-Gericht: Apple bekommt Einsicht in Android-Dokumente von Motorola und Google
Die Pantent-Streitigkeiten in der IT-Branche werden nicht weniger. Im Kampf zwischen Google/Motorola Mobility und Apple hat ein Richter in Chicago nun entschieden, dass der iPhone-Hersteller unter anderem Einsicht in die Entwicklungsgeschichte des Google-OS bekommen soll.
Wie Bloomberg berichtet, soll Apple aber nicht nur an diese Informationen über Android gelangen, sondern auch einen Blick hinter die Kulissen der Übernahmegespräche zwischen Motorola Mobility und Google gewährt bekommen. Dies entschied der Richter Richard A. Posner vor Gericht in Chicago.

FTC: Western Digital and Hitachi must give assets and IP rights to Toshiba
Thought everything was looking rosy for the hard drive hitch of the year? Well, it looks like Federal Trade Commission reckons the union of Hitachi and Western Digital isn't quite there just yet, ordering that the new company would have to shed some of its assets to Toshiba. Kodak moves to block Apple's latest patent suit from proceeding in federal district court
In a move that's sure to surprise no one, Kodak is fighting Apple's latest round of patent litigation -- a suit that would force Kodak to pause plans to sell up to $2.6 billion in digital imaging patents as a condition of its bankruptcy loan. Verizon pushed out in front of the news Tuesday as it posted a teaser on its main page for what's likely the new iPad. Saying only that "something is coming," it asks users to sign up for general news updates to get early word. MSI outs new GT60 / GT70 gaming laptops, we go hands-on (video)
MSI already popped up on the rumor-radar this week, and now it's confirmed a pair of new gaming laptops at CeBIT. The main difference between the new boys -- that we can see so far, at least -- is the display, with the GT70 sporting 17 inches against the GT60's 15. HTC's raw February revenue shows 37% plunge, poor quarter
HTC has posted unaudited results (PDF) for February that have shown the company is on the path to have its second tough quarter in a row. Its revenue for the one month was down 36.8 percent from where it was a year ago, to 20.3 billion $NT ($687 million). Nintendo on Monday touted the resiliency of the 3DS by claiming banner first-year sales in the US. It sold 4.5 million of the glasses-free 3D console in the 12 months since its arrival, or nearly twice the 2.3 million of the original DS sold in a similar span. Acer Aspire V3 notebook hands-on (video)
Hot off the tails of the Aspire V5 is another new release from Acer. This time it's the Aspire V3 notebook, which comes in any one of three configurations, with 14, 15.6 and 17.3-inch screens in-tow. Each variation will be powered by an Intel Core i3, i5 and i7 processor, with NVIDIA GeForce GT series graphics throwing up the visuals. As with the V5, specs are difficult to come by at this point, though Acer has confirmed that the 17.3-inch model will include a 1600 x 900 pixel display. Apple TV stock nearly evaporated ahead of refresh
Checks through the online Apple Store in the US and abroad has shown that both retail and some online availability has almost disappeared entirely for the current-generation Apple TV. iPad HD: Neuer Name für das kommende iPad?
Nachdem Apple sich beim jüngsten iPhone für die Bezeichung iPhone 4S und nicht iPhone 5 entschieden hat, gibt es seit einigen Tagen ähnliche Namens-Unsicherheiten bezüglich des kommenden iPads. Statt iPad 3 soll es laut unterschiedlichen Berichten nun iPad HD heißen.

Apple TV: Lager in US Apple Stores erschöpft
Bereits seit einigen Wochen konnte man die immer geringer werdenden Vorräte von Apples Set-Top-Box Apple TV bei den Online-Händlern und Apple Stores beobachten. Aktuell sollen nur noch vier von 246 US Apple Stores die kleine schwarze Box auf Lager haben.

Following a new partnership with NASA's Night Sky Network, First Light has updated its Distant Suns 3 app with support for viewing local astronomical activity. The astronomy app uses GPS and compass data from iOS devices, as well as an augmented reality-based interface to help users identify stars. Version 3.0 also improves overall performance and has added a lens flare to add a more photographic quality to the imagery. Distant Suns is available in the App Store for $9.99.

China Mobile iPhone users now up to 15 million
The number of iPhone users on China Mobile has reached 15 million, according to the carrier's chairman, Wang Jianzhou. The figure is notable because the only official iPhone carrier in China so far has been rival China Unicom. All of the Mobile iPhone subscribers are therefore using hacked and/or gray market devices, despite efforts to clamp down on unofficial sales. Apple now appears to be quietly supporting the carrier.

GlobalFoundries buys out remaining AMD stake
GlobalFoundries picked Monday to say it had bought out AMD's remaining stake in its manufacturing. The mutually agreed deal now puts the chip production firm entirely in the control of Advanced Technology Investment Company (ATIC), the company that had originally orchestrated the split. GlobalFoundries could now act independently and wouldn't be bound to making AMD processor, although there were no immediate intentions to stop.

Study: iPad use up 400 percent in small, medium businesses
American City Business Journals, which publishes business periodicals throughout the US, says it has found that the iPad's popularity goes beyond corporations like the Fortune 500; its use in small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) rose from nine percent in 2010 to over 34 percent in 2011, a near-quadrupling in penetration. Kodak tries to stop Apple from restarting patent fight
Kodak in court filings submitted Friday but published Monday made arguments trying to stop Apple from continuing a challenge on patent ownership. The soon-to-be-ex camera maker urged a bankruptcy court not to resume the case in federal court. After running an experimental "pop-up" store in Austin during the South by Southwest (SXSW) Interactive festival last year, Apple has confirmed that it will not be participating this year. Benches still show iOS 3X faster than Android in HTML5
Apple still has an unambiguous lead over Google in HTML5 performance on the mobile web, app development tool maker Spaceport.io found in a head-on benchmark test. iOS devices were typically about three times faster than their Android equivalents. Even Android 4.0's flagship, the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, was still about 42 percent slower than the iPhone 4S despite newly optimized HTML5 code and a theoretically faster 1.2GHz clock speed.

Ten One Design outs rare pressure-sensitive stylus for iPad
Ten One design has unveiled a prototype of a pressure-sensitive stylus for iPads in hopes that it would be an ideal fit for the next iPad. The writing implement, codenamed "Blue Tiger," that uses Bluetooth 4.0 to automatically connect to the iPad. Netgear has released a new dedicated bridging device called the WN2500RP, a dual-band range extender for Wi-Fi networks that promises to eliminate "dead spots" and supports both wired and wireless devices, including Ethernet-capable HDTVs, gaming consoles and Blu-Ray players. HP first with Xeon E5 workstations, hints at 16-core Mac Pro
HP confirmed that Intel was launching its long-in-the-making Xeon E5 workstation processors after it introduced a trio of new Z workstations. The regular Z420, mid-tier Z620, and flagship Z820 can all use the new E5-2600 chip line, which scales up to eight cores in one chip and has new ceilings for memory. At its extreme, the Z820 can have 16 cores across two processors, 14TB of storage, and a very large 512GB of error-correcting memory.

Fehlstart für Die Simpsons Springfield: Electronic Arts hat sich dazu entschlossen, das letzte Woche gestartete Spiel wieder aus dem App Store zu nehmen.
Als Grund gibt der Hersteller an, er wolle den bestehenden Nutzern das bestmögliche Spielerlebnis gewährleisten. Bericht: günstiges Mini iPad kommt im Herbst 2012
Apple will mit einem Mini iPad im Markt der Einsteiger-Tablet PCs mitmischen. Das behauptet zumindest „CNET“, nach dessen Informationen im Herbst mit der Vorstellung einer kleinen Variante des beliebten Streichelcomputers zu rechnen ist. Dieser soll weit unter 300 Euro kosten und einen rund fünf Zentimeter kleineren Touchscreen besitzen.

Die Regeln für Apps im Android Market haben sich in einem nicht ganz unwichtigen Punkt geändert: ihre maximale Dateigröße darf jetzt etwas mehr als 4 GB betragen und nicht mehr nur 50 MB wie bisher. Dabei bleiben die APKs (Application Package Files) wie gehabt auf 50 MB beschränkt, sie können nun allerdings in E-Mail-Attachement-Manier zwei Erweiterungsdateien von jeweils 2 GB haben. Damit werden Entwickler nicht mehr gezwungen, größere Dateien bzw. Bibliotheken selbst zu hosten, außerdem wird für die Nutzer die App-Größe deutlich transparenter.

Android Market raises maximum app size to 4GB, APK files still limited to 50MB
A small but fundamental shift happened this evening in the Android Market, as Google has raised its rather arbitrary maximum application size from 50MB to a hefty 4GB. While APK files retain the traditional 50MB restriction, developers will be able to bundle two additional 2GB expansion files with their apps, which (in most cases) will be downloaded automatically. The move is fundamentally a goodwill gesture toward game developers -- who were previously forced to host any content in excess of 50MB themselves -- but it also bodes well for consumers, who can now view an application's actual file size. Any of you who have spent time in corporate America know that companies can be pretty paranoid about your passwords. Change them every three months, have a minimum of one upper case and one lower case letter, one number, one special character and be at least 12 characters long. We've even seen requirements for how many characters must be different from one password to the next.
