Apple announces top all-time paid and free apps
With the 25 billionth app sold the evening of March 3rd to Chunli Fu of Qingdao, China, Apple has now taken the time to tally up the top all-time paid and free apps for iPhone and iPad. The last time Apple updated the list was when a paltry 10 billion apps had gone out the virtual doors of the App Store. While space prohibits posting the entire list here, let it suffice to say that

Deutsche Telekom tests 512Gbps fiber optic network in Germany, breaks record in the process
If you thought Google's Kansan stab at blistering gigabit speeds was lust-worthy, then this latest fiber feat out of Germany should have you flooding the room with drool. Part of Deutsche Telekom's OSIRIS (Optically Supported UP Router Interfaces) project, the telco's T-Labs team managed to successfully transfer data "over a single optical fiber wavelength channel" from Berlin to Hanover and back at speeds of up to 512Gbps -- that's over half a terabit. OS X 10.7.3 Supplemental Update released by Apple
A little over a month since OS X 10.7.3 was released on February 1, 2012, Apple has made a 10.7.3 supplemental update available via Software Update. The update is a minuscule 38 KB is size, and resolves an issue when restoring a Mac from a Time Machine Backup. Report: iOS beats Android at HTML5 rendering
AllThingsD reports that Spaceport.io, which makes a cross-platform gaming SDK, has tested the speed of HTML5 rendering on iOS and Android. The results show that iOS is faster by far. Spaceport used its own benchmark, called the "PerfMark," which counts the number of moving images on a screen at 30 frames per second, a rate that provides a near-native user experience. Chrome adopted by US State Department as optional browser, IE8 prepped for mid-March release (video)
State department workers frustrated with their dated web browsers will get some relief very soon. At the latest town hall meeting, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was questioned on the update roll-out of secure, state-certified browsers and -- prefacing with a chuckle -- she announced that Google's Chrome had started already begun its roll-out last month. The iPad's built-in iPod app used to be my favorite way to interact with music on any device. It struck a good compromise between the heavy, sidebar-driven UI of iTunes on the Mac and the simple text-only music browsing on the iPhone. Then iOS 5 came along and ruined everything; the old iPod app got replaced with a UI catastrophe called "Music" that convinced me to switch to my iPhone as my primary music player. Schon beim iPad der ersten Generation hatte Apple eine eigene Schutzhülle vorgestellt, mit dem iPad der zweiten Generation erschien das "Smart Cover". Globalfoundries buys out AMD to become fully independent chip maker
Globalfoundries has celebrated its third anniversary by announcing that it's agreed terms with AMD to buy out its remaining stake in the company to go it alone. Whilst Sunnyvale will remain a key customer to the chip foundry, the nuts and bolts of ownership will be wholly in the hands of ATIC. Lumineszierende Stempelpfeile für jugendliche Radler mit Fahrradlichtallergie

Die Jungsdesigner Weiche Wu und Kwang Hyun Ahn haben Sicherheitskonzept für jugendliche Radler ausgetüftelt, das nur auf den ersten Blick absurd anmutet: Fahrradfahrer sollen sich mit lumineszierender Farbe Pfeile auf die Arme stempeln. Dahinter steckt die Überlegung, dass insbesondere Jugendliche gerne auf Fahrradlichter verzichten, weil diese lästig sind und es sich ohne deutlich cooler radelt. Die aufgestempelten Pfeile in lumineszierenden Farben sollen derweil das jugendliche Trendgefühl ansprechen und so ein wenig mehr Sicherheit in den Straßenverkehr bringen. Gar nicht so blöd das Konzept.

Neue Hülle für iPad 3, iPhone-5-Prototypen mit Rückseiten aus Glas und Keramik
Es sind nur noch knapp 48 Stunden bis zum iPad-Event am Mittwoch-Abend. In diesen letzten Stunden gibt es wie üblich nochmal eine Reihe frischer Zutaten aus der Gerüchteküche. So soll Apple angeblich eine neue Hülle für das kommende iPad vorbereiten.

Report: major creditor seeks liquidation of Apple opponent Proview
According to a Xinhua News Agency report, creditors are putting pressure on Proview to declare bankruptcy and liquidate its assets. Leading the effort is Fubon Insurance, a Taiwanese company that's seeking to recoup US$8.68 million from the struggling Chinese firm. Fubon employees have refused to comment on the report, but Proview lawyer Ma Dongxiao says the company's financial troubles will not effect the outcome of its iPad trademark lawsuit with Apple. China Mobile iPhone 4S problems allegedly fixed by Apple
Apple has contributed to fixing a problem with using the iPhone 4S on China Mobile, the People's Daily reports. Some 4S owners have been having trouble activating SIM cards, or else simply making calls with a full signal. A telecom expert reached by the Daily notes that the issue appears to involve the 4S only supporting the GSM P band -- 885-915MHz -- and not the E band (880-890MHz), although both are used by China Mobile.

We still don't have detailed specs or even a model number, but we just had a chance to go hands-on with Fujitsu's new Lifebook Ultrabook at CeBIT. The 14-inch device will ship in red and silver, and is very thin -- 16mm, to be more precise -- including a frameless display that folds flat 180 degrees to lie flush. The nearly edge-to-edge LCD looks fantastic, at least powered off. European Commission VP Viviane Reding hinted Android app developers and possibly Google itself might be in legal trouble over app data access. Daily iPhone App: Tobe & Friends Hookshot Escape catches sweet air
I've already suggested that you buy Tobe & Friends: Hookshot Escape in passing, and after playing with it for a few days, my advice hasn't changed. It's a remarkably cute and well-made game, with some interesting ideas about platforming, incredible music and graphics, and a lot of retro pixelated fun. Tobe & Friends: Hookshot Escape is an endless platformer. You jump your way up a series of platforms as the screen moves faster and faster. The terrain says pretty much the same as you progress, unlike many "endless" games. It sounds repetitive but it works, as the repetition helps you learn the layout.

Senator Schumer wants FTC look into iOS, Android app access
Senator Chuck Schumer on Sunday sent a letter to the Federal Trade Commission with concerns over the reaches of Android and iOS apps. He was worried that their abilities to quietly take contact lists and photo libraries without direct knowledge were going "well beyond" what a regular user would agree to. Although he agreed that these were often breaching Apple and Google terms, he was concerned the companies weren't properly monitoring what was happening.

AMD Radeon HD 7850, 7870 arrive to tackle sweet spot in 3D
AMD put the last touches on the Radeon HD 7000 line Monday with the Radeon HD 7850 and 7870 GHz Edition (links active soon). Many had written off Sony from the mobile gaming arena not long into the PSP's history: high prices and a lack of major games kept it on the sidelines as the Nintendo DS took over. Apple and Google have seemingly been poised to deliver a killing blow with much better general abilities and cheaper games. The PlayStation Vita, then, is a chance at redemption.
