Kodak sells Gallery photo service to Shutterfly
Kodak took a key step to getting out of its ongoing bankruptcy by tentatively selling its online Kodak Gallery photo service to Shutterfly. The deal will move both the 75 million users and their photos to the larger, more stable service. Photographers will have the chance to opt out and still get their photos, either through direct downloads for free or by buying photo DVDs while Kodak Gallery is active.

MIT Hornet simulator may lead to better multi-core chips
Researchers at MIT have developed a software simulation tool that models the performance of multi-core chip designs with more accuracy than previously possible. The software, named Hornet, can evaluate analyze a potential chip design concept down to a single processing cycle and find flaws early, thereby reducing risk early in the costly chip design process that other simulation techniques might have missed. Currently, the tool can evaluate a design idea with equivalent of 1,000 or more cores.

Gyroscope manufacturers benefit as iPhone, iPad sales soar
Apple isn't the only company reaping the benefits of increased sales of the iPhone and iPad. SpechJammer gun gives loudmouths a dose of their own medicine to keep 'em quiet

Square wireless payments coming to NYC cabs, limos
Square readers for payments will be used in a few weeks during a testing project in New York City in 30 taxis before becoming more widespread. The test is part of the requirements that need to be met after the New York City Taxi and Limousine
Commission approved Square's systems in cabs. Once testing is completed, there are plans to deploy the technology in over 13,000 cabs in the city.

New Houston Apple Store could signal iPad 3 launch date
The planned opening of a new Houston Apple Store may indicate a launch date for the iPad 3, the Houston Chronicle reports. Apple is on the verge of opening a new outlet in the Highland Village shopping center. A source connected to the store's opening says that the outlet was originally supposed to debut in January, and later March 17th. Just a few weeks ago, though, the date was allegedly adjusted to March 16th.

NSA builds own model of Android phone, wants you to do the same

Proposed Apple patent calls for variable location precision
A newly-published Apple patent application suggests the ability to adjust the precision of shared location data, notes AppleInsider. Titled Variable Precision Location Sharing, the filing suggests options to reduce precision to the neighborhood or even city level, instead of simply offering total accuracy or completely disabling tracking. The concept appears to be aimed at iOS apps like Find My Friends.

Windows 8 Consumer Preview hits 1m downloads in one day
Microsoft quietly posted word Thursday afternoon that the Windows 8 Consumer Preview had hit one million downloads in a day. The figure is rare for a beta and roughly matches Apple's first-day Lion downloads. Microsoft didn't say how many were unique users.

Intel Xeon E5 already in channel, to be official next week
Intel's elusive, publicly accessible Xeon E5 processor is now known through a preview on Thrusday. Workstation builder Supermicro gave The Inquirer a look at an upcoming E5-based workstation with two of the processors. Performance couldn't be publicly disclosed, but the Boston PC builder proved that they weren't hot and were stable enough to be production-ready.

Laminar for iPad is a good Photoshop Touch alternative
I liked Photoshop Touch when I reviewed it earlier this week, but one big issue was the file limitation of 1600 x 1600 pixels. Looking around the App Store, I found an interesting alternative with a similar feature set, Laminar. It runs on the iPad 1 and 2, and best of all, it can load and output higher resolution files. Air Studios has announced the launch of AirVinyl for the iPhone. Taking inspiration from high-end decks and systems of the '70s and '80s, AirVinyl includes a retro tape deck interface that allows users to create mix tapes and playlists that can be shared via social networks. Any playlists already stored on an iPhone will also be available as Mixtapes, and compatibility with iTunes Match allows users to stream music from their iCloud library. AT&T improves data throttling with higher thresholds, speed
AT&T in an update tackled the multiple complaints swirling around its throttling practices. The change now only invokes throttling after a user pushes past what would be the cap on a limited plan, at 3GB for HSPA+ and below and 5GB for LTE. Throttling previously ramped up as soon as 2GB.

Apple releases iMac Graphic, MacBook Pro EFI firmware updates
Apple recently released two firmware updates that address graphics problems in the iMac and select MacBook Pro models. The iMac update fixes a graphics issue in Lion that would lock up the all-in-one machine, while the MacBook Pro update targets 15-inch, late 2008 models with a flickering display. MWC: Polaroid Pro Smartphone Hands-On

Schon eigenwillig, dass Polaroid jetzt Android Smartphones macht, aber nehmen wir das einfach mal hin. Die Herkunft ist mit Alcatel recht klar definiert, und was genau die ehemalige Kamerafirma jetzt allerdings mit drei Smartphones will, deren Spezifikation gerade in diesem Bereich mau sind, ist uns noch nicht klar. Auch die Qualität der Handys ist eher mau und fühlt sich etwas veraltet an. Die finalen Modelle des X11B, Pro A12 und des Flagschiffs, das es noch nicht mal zum MWC geschafft hat, überzeugen bislang nicht, vielleicht hätte Polaroid doch warten sollen, bis die Geräte wirklich fertig sind, um sie vorzustellen. AT&T announces throttling changes, now kicks in at 3GB or 5GB for LTE
Anyone hoping for some truly unlimited "unlimited" plans is still out of luck, but AT&T has announced some changes (or a clarification, as it puts it) to its throttling procedures today that will at least give you a bit more room to work with. For customers on an unlimited plan with a 3G or "4G" phone (i.e. HSPA+), you'll now be able to enjoy full data speeds up to 3GB, after which you'll then see your speeds decrease until the start of the next billing cycle. If you have a 4G LTE phone, however, you'll have a full 5GB to play with before the throttling kicks in. Pew: 53% of US phones are smartphones, Android and iOS tied
More Americans now own smartphones than basic cellphones, Pew Internet deduced on Thursday. By looking at those who either said they had a smartphone or mentioned it using a smartphone platform, the study found that 53 percent of American cellphone owners had a smartphone as of February. With 88 percent of the entire adult American population using a cellphone, that translated to 46 percent of all adults owning a smartphone.

A site called RepairLabs says it has managed to obtain digitzer parts for the iPad 3. The digitzer is essentially the front panel, including the touchscreen and the front glass. Photos appear to confirm that the iPad 3 will come in black and white tones, and continue to use a traditional Home button. Apple won a significant legal victory when a German court ruled that Motorola Mobility violates patent EP2059868, says a report at FOSS Patents. EU says Google privacy policy likely violating law
European Commission official Viviane Reding in an interview with the BBC's Radio 4 on Thursday said that Google's newly in-effect unified privacy policy was so far determined to be violating EU laws. Apple has filed a complaint against EBox Digital Technology Product over its use of the word "EPAD," says a Computerworld report. The complaint was filed earlier this year through China's trademark office, and EBox received a copy of the complaint on Febraruy 2. Apple sets sights on new Portland, Vancouver area stores
Apple is taking steps toward new stores in Portland, Oregon and the Vancouver area in Canada. In Portland, architects working for Apple are said to have submitted plans for a Yamhill Street outlet, between 4th and 5th Avenues at the Pioneer Place shopping center. It would replace the current Pioneer Place shop, located in the basement of the same building. The city of Portland is now taking public comments on the proposed construction.

Apple gets German ban on Motorola over photo gallery patent
Apple on Thursday bounced back from court defeats in Germany after it won its own ban against Motorola. A Munich-based judge ruled that the page turning in the photo gallery app, as used by Motorola's Android phones, violated Apple's patents when used in a zoomed-in mode. The feature is the same that led to Samsung changing code to avoid a ban in the Netherlands.

Apple TV: Mehr Anzeichen für neues Modell

Sony releases new 'H-Series' Cyber-shot cameras
Sony has introduced five new Cyber-shot model cameras to the US market, each with high optical zoom and HD video recording capability. Ranging in price from $480 to $250, the cameras are said by Sony to be ideal for travel photography and everyday snapshots or videos. The higher end models offer up to 30x optical zoom, embedded GPS and Full HD recording, while the budget models feature 16x zoom and 720p video among other features.

Rumor has 7.85-inch iPad produced no earlier than summer

Reflection app offers wireless iOS mirroring on Mac
A new application for Macs leverages the AirPlay technology found in the iPhone 4S and iPad 2 to mirror the screens of those devices onto a Mac running Snow Leopard or higher. Called Reflection, the app can simply show the screen or put a "device shell" around the screen to simulate the look of an iOS device and its contents. The program utilizes the AirPlay abilities to wirelessly stream visual and audio information from the device to the Mac.

It's a couple of months since we spotted paperwork for a mysterious "PTK-450" device at the FCC and now Wacom has finally revealed the gadget that goes with the label. Apple issues iMac update to fix graphic card issue
Apple has updated Software Update and its support website with a small update called iMac Graphic FW Update 3.0 which it says will fix "a graphics issue that will cause an iMac to hang under certain conditions" for Intel-based iMacs running OS X Lion. The bug apparently exists inside the firmware for the graphics card in recent iMacs, as the company issued a similar update last June.

iRobot reorganizes, forms new unit focused on Ava and other emerging technologies
iRobot has been branching out from its traditional household and military robots for quite a while, and it looks like it's now officially embracing those activities as a core part of its business. Foursquare starts using OpenStreetMap data on the desktop
Foursquare on Wednesday detailed a major change in map sources on the desktop. It now taps OpenStreetMap's crowd-sourced data to generate the maps, letting it get continually updated geographical info without depending solely on an outside provider or paying for a map license. Its version is customized to match the Foursquare look, with MapBox's help, and lets them use Leaflet's JavaScript platform to run the maps.

Apple rejects iBook with links to Amazon's store
This is just one specific case out of the many, many organizations and individuals publishing content on Apple's iBookstore, but it's an interesting call by Apple nevertheless. Seth Godin tried to publish a book of his through Apple's iBooks, but the content was rejected by Apple's system. Not because it was offensive in some way, but simply because it contained links to Amazon's booksore. These weren't even links to Godin's books -- they were simply links to reference books, but because they went out to a competing service, Apple pulled the plug. Before anyone starts yelling about censorship, keep in mind that this is Apple's playground, and it can take its ball home whenever it wants, no matter how inane the reason.

Apple cracking down on links in iBookstore titles
Apple is clamping down on iBookstore titles just because they link to outside bookstores, a report notes. Stop Stealing Dreams author Seth Godin complains that Apple recently rejected his title because the book contains links to works cited in the bibliography. "Multiple links to Amazon store. IE page 35, David Weinberger link," a rejection notice reads. Godin comments that the issue is also easy to work around in his case, since the unrestricted EPUB edition can be accessed on an iOS device via a web link.

Lytro kicked off spring early on Wednesday by shipping its promised light field camera. The genuinely unique camera costs $399 in its 8GB blue and gray variants and $499 for the 16GB red edition. Mini quadrotors play Bond, James Bond (video)
This week's TED2012 conference isn't all talk -- sometimes the videos features speak for themselves. Check out this phenomenal one from the University of Pennsylvania starring a number of nano quadrotors playing the James Bond theme by banging percussion, hitting the piano and strumming a guitar.
