Behind the scenes on Verizon's big deal with Apple for the iPhone
TechnoBuffalo's Adriana Lee has an interesting writeup that claims to go behind the scenes on Verizon's big deal with Apple to finally sell the iPhone on a second network earlier this year. Unfortunately, this information comes from an unnamed source, so we can't exactly vouch for its veracity. But it's an interesting tale anyway of what the Verizon deal may have been like.
Apparently security was tight -- only those who needed to know about the deal did so officially beforehand (though, honestly, we'd heard rumor after rumor about it for a long time). And actual handsets were closely guarded, with owners being required to routinely put a special code in to guarantee things hadn't leaked out.

Senator Franken calls for Apple, Google app privacy policies
Minnesota Senator Al Franken in a letter to Apple and Google following last week's Senate hearings asked both of them to establish clear app privacy policies. Those who bought from the App Store or Android Market would be given an explanation of what information the apps wanted and who was getting the data. The non-binding request would give a "clearer understanding" of what was happening and avoid instances of apps getting more than they needed.

French e-book law may force price changes for foreigners
A new law passed last week by France's National Assembly could have repercussions for e-book pricing beyond the country itself. Known just as a "prix du livre numérique" (price of digital books) law, it would update the country's Lang Law from 1981 to require that books with a French publisher be sold in France at no more than a five percent discount below the list price. The requirement is irrespective of the company's origin and would make e-book providers like Amazon, Apple, or Kobo follow French rules even though they were located in North America.

Mac Defender malware gets new 'MacGuard' variant
Another and potentially more dangerous version of the Mac Defender malware has been detected in the wild, says security firm Intego. Called "MacGuard," the code is mostly similar in function to its predecessors. An attack begins, for instance, when a person is tricked into visiting a malicious URL, which triggers the automatic download of an installer called avSetup.pkg.

Spotify and Facebook partner up, send Europe a friend request?
Spotify may still be in tough negotiations with record labels to bring its streaming music service to the US, but the Swedish company has managed to score a powerful stateside ally, reportedly striking a partnership with Facebook. Neither party is dropping any cash on the deal -- set to be called either "Facebook Music" or "Spotify on Facebook," according to Forbes's anonymous sources -- which will let members of the social network stream songs at the same time as friends and share their listening habits with those in their social circle. Analyst: RIM may move just 450,000 PlayBooks this spring
Wedbush Securities' Scott Sutherland gave a poor outlook for RIM in a research note on Wednesday. Reported checks led the analyst to believe that BlackBerry PlayBook sales were likely to hit no more than 450,000 in RIM's spring quarter, which ends this month. He saw it as part of lowered expectations and expected RIM to ship 2.3 million PlayBooks for its whole fiscal year ending next February.

iPhone: What is DFU mode, and what's the difference from recovery mode?
In the past couple of days, we've seen reports here and there of iPhones getting stuck in a restart loop. The black screen with the Apple logo shows up, holds for a while, and then disappears again; repeat ad infinitum. While it's not clear yet exactly what's triggering the issue (the complainants suspect that it may be a recent application update to blame), there is a tried and true way to get your iPhone, iPod touch, iPad or older iPod back to square one: either use recovery mode or do a DFU restore.

Microsoft to launch web-based Windows Phone Marketplace alongside 'Mango'
We're not quite sure why Microsoft didn't make mention of it during its big event yesterday, but the company has now confirmed that its forthcoming "Mango" update will also bring with it another big addition to the Windows Phone scene: a web-based Marketplace. iPad 2 pegged for Russia, Brazil on Friday
The iPad 2 will also launch in Russia and Brazil this coming Friday, reports say. While little information has emerged about Brazilian plans, Russian tablets will reportedly be sold at a variety of stores including MediaMarkt, Beliy Veter Cifrovoi, M.Video, ION, Technosila, Eldorado, z-Store and Re:Store. Re:Storeís PR director, Ludmila Semushina, says the chain expects the iPad 2 to sell "even faster" in Russia versus Germany, Denmark and Norway, where initial stock vanished within three days.

TomTom GPS app offers good maps, terrible interface
A while back, I posted about some of my ongoing issues with iPhone navigation powerhouse Navigon, which has been my my primary nav app. After that post went live, Navigon immediately contacted me to see how they could improve their product, asking for specific details of the intersections where navigation failed and I was directed in circles. I was also contacted by TomTom, who asked me to give their product a try.

North Korea apparently pumping out state-sponsored PCs

Twitter kauft TweetDeck, alles soll so bleiben wie bisher
Das Gerücht, dass Twitter über den Kauf von TweetDeck nachdenkt, schwirrte schon seit geraumer Zeit durch diverse Blogs, nun ist es geschehen: laut All Things D ist man sich für eine Summe zwischen 40 und 50 Millionen Dollar handelseinig geworden. Lawsuit charges Upper West Side Apple Store with racism
Workers at Apple's Upper West Side store in New York City recently engaged in racial discrimination, a new lawsuit complains. The plaintiffs, Brian Johnston and Nile Charles, say that on December 9th, they went into to the store to buy headphones. Both Johnston and Charles are black, and are described as having worn "baggy jeans and large sweaters with hoods" when they entered the store at 3:20 in the afternoon.

Apple will officially launch the iPhone 4 in India this coming Friday, May 27, according to a Wall Street Journal report. TweetDeck and Twitter, together at at last
We've been hearing rumors for a while that Twitter was looking to make TweetDeck a member of its flock, and now, the blue bird crew has made it official. All Things D reports that the deal was done for between $40 to 50 million, and that TweetDeck CEO Iain Dodsworth will stay on to run the platform. In its official announcement, Twitter said it will continue to "invest in the TweetDeck that users know and love" -- time will tell if the new boss birdie is a boon or bane for the popular tweet tracking app.

Twitter to keep TweetDeck active, focus on pro users
Twitter on Wednesday discussed its buyout of TweetDeck with a promise the existing app would stay. Rather than subsume it as with Atebits, the company planned to keep developing the app "that users know and love." It saw the multi-platform client as a way of giving companies and power users a way to track conversations. China urges Foxconn to ensure worker safety
It's been another rough week for Foxconn, Apple's biggest manufacturing partner. After an explosion at a Foxconn factory killed three workers last Friday, the Chinese government urged the manufacturer and other Taiwanese companies to better ensure the safety of their employees.
"We hope Foxconn and other Taiwanese firms can learn lessons from this, carry out safety responsibilities, step up internal oversight, stamp out potential safety risks in a timely manner, and ensure safe production," Fan Liqing, a spokeswoman for China's Taiwan Affairs Office, said on Wednesday.

Hasselblad ships 200-megapixel H4D-200MS camera
Hasselblad has acted on its promise to ship a 200-megapixel camera and shipped the H4D-200MS. The medium format shooter is ultimately based on a 50-megapixel sensor but composites six shots to create the effective resolution. Sparrow announces new features at TechCrunch Disrupt
Moments ago, Dom Leca of Sparrow took the stage at TechCrunch Disrupt in New York and announced a few new features for Sparrow -- a powerful and elegant email client. They also gave us a few details on the financials for the company.
Starting with a team of 4, the company raised $250,000 and as of today have made $500,000 in revenue. Not bad!
New features for Sparrow include some Tumblr integration, but most interesting to me is the Facebook messaging integration. If you are using your @facebook email, you will be able to access this in Sparrow using Facebook Connect. Further, emails from Facebook will show the profile pic for that contact. Very nice.

China Unicom offers $10 monthly iPhone plan amid stiff competition
China Unicom is trying to grab additional customers before its exclusivity with the iPhone ends. The wireless carrier is kicking off a new promotion that drops the price on its lowest iPhone plan to a rock bottom 66 yuan (US$10) a month.
Right now, its larger rivals China Mobile and China Telecom do not sell the iPhone with a service contract, but may do so in the near future. Both carriers are rumored to be in talks with Apple to bring the iPhone to their respective networks.

Was die Designergruppe Dorothy sich zum Thema Space Invaders ausgedacht hat, haben wir letztes Jahr schon einmal bei Igor Chak gesehen - jedenfalls muss man schon ganz genau hinschauen, um die Unterschiede zwischen den Space-Invader-Sesseln zu entdecken, wenn man mal von der Farbigkeit absieht. Immerhin hat Dorothy schon ein paar Prototypen gebaut, die überfällige Umsetzung der naheliegenden Idee rückt also wenigstens näher.

The iPhone 4 will finally launch in India on May 27th, says the Wall Street Journal. The phone will be available from two carriers, Aircel and Bharti Airtel. Macworld Australia confirms future Apple Store
Australia may be home to several new Apple retail stores this year. The latest Apple retail store was spotted in Melbourne's Westfield Southland Mall. According to Macworld Australia, construction is beginning on the retail storefront and the store will be ready for sales later this year. Apple has not commented on this expansion, but a Westfield employee confirmed off the record that Apple is behind these renovations.
Apple is also opening a larger, flagship store in the Crown Casino area of Melbourne and is hiring staff to fill new retail positions in or around Melbourne. Apple already operates ten retail stores in Australia and may be adding additional stores in cities of Brisbane and Sydney as well.

iPhone 4 to arrive in India on May 27
TUAW readers in India waiting for the iPhone 4 to show up only need to wait two more days. Indian mobile carrier Airtel has been taking pre-registrations for the iPhone 4 since earlier this month, but now competitor Aircel is going to hit the market first.

China Unicom starts $10 iPhone plan to fend off rivals
China Unicom president Lu Yimin told investors late Tuesday that his company had started offering an ultra low-cost iPhone plan. Cox ditches 3G network infrastructure, sticks with airwaves borrowed from Sprint
Cox Communications had some grand designs on the cellular market, but they're not panning out quite as the company planned -- FierceWireless reports that though Cox already poured cash into rolling out 3G equipment, it's going to scrap the whole thing, in favor of continuing to pay Sprint for borrowed airtime. Castle Runner is a running title that's more hardcore than Canabalt. The pressure to run and avoid objects is increased by a ceiling slowly coming down on top of your head. As you run along, you'll pick up power-ups that will usually help (either raise the ceiling or allow you more time playing), but sometimes hurt (speeding you up or even darkening the screen so that you have to memorize the obstacles as they come at you).
There are pillars to slide under and bumps to go over, making Castle Runner really tough. Plus, the grayscale color scheme doesn't exactly scream fun and friendly. NASA abandons Mars rover Spirit, chooses to remember the good times

Some of the UK's most remote parts still don't have access to broadband of any kind, but later this year, they might have the sort that makes us look on in envy. NowStream: Torrents streamen mit dem iPhone (Video)

Sohail Prasad von der Carnegie Mellon University hat auf dem Hackathon ein sehr nützliches Tool für iOS gebastelt, auf das v: mit NowStream lassen sich nicht nur Torrents runterladen, sondern auch schon während des Runterladens streamen. Schon bald soll es erhältlich sein, allerdings ist Prasad noch auf der Suche nach einem legalen Anwendungsgebiet. Sony Ericsson's Canadian online store hacked, more than 2,000 customers' data taken
The hackers just won't give poor Sony a break, will they? Following the infamous PSN breach last month and an attack on the company's Greek online music service earlier this week, Sony Ericsson saw another intrusion that extracted personal data of more than 2,000 Canadian Eshop customers. Fortunately, the company claims that passwords taken were encrypted and no credit card details were lost, but this is still worrisome nevertheless. Right now, the Eshop service has been taken off line -- for the sake of Sir Howard and his Japanese chums, let's just hope that this will be the last Sony breach we hear about.

After Lodsys started sending threatening letters to developers, Apple took some time to issue a statement to developers hit by the notices which seemed to provide cover for them. Microsoft backtracks on Ballmer Windows 8 confirmations
Microsoft took an unusual step Tuesday and issued a statement in an attempt to retract its own CEO Steve Ballmer's confirmation of Windows 8 launching in 2012. Chevy had the whole "Heartbeat of America" thing cornered in the 80s, but now its Ford's turn to get in on the action. The car maker's European research team unveiled a prototype car seat capable of monitoring a driver's heart courtesy of six embedded electrodes, which can take measurements without coming in direct contact with skin. The technology, the latest in a recent string of health-related in-vehicle concepts from the company, can detect whether the driver is having a heart attack and transmit that information to the vehicle's safety system. New Consumer Reports ranks keep MacBooks on top
Consumer Reports' refreshed notebook rankings [sub. required] gave Apple the top spot in virtually all notebook rankings. As of late May, the updated MacBook Pros led the 15-inch category with 76 to 78 points versus Dell's XPS 15 at 73 points, while the 17-inch models just edged ahead of the HP dv7 (79 points) with 80 and 81 points. All of the 13-inch models placed second at 70 to 72 points, but they were only topped by Apple's own 13-inch MacBook Air, which leapt ahead at 76 points.

Windows support has arrived for m3me's productivity app, Remote Conductor for iPad. The app wirelessly connects, via 256-bit AES encryption, to a Mac as a control center -- capable of application and window switching and remote program launching. Amazon steps up fight with $164 ad-loaded Kindle 3G
Amazon quickly followed on the heels of the new touchscreen Nook by unveiling a new Kindle 3G with Special Offers. FDX Reader for iPad lets users read Final Draft screenplays
A new reader application for iPad, FDX Reader, allows users to read Final Draft screenplays in their native FDX format. That is literally all it does, and makes a point of it -- no annotations, no editing, no first converting things to PDF. It just allows users to open and view FDX documents placed on the iPad via iTunes, or through Dropbox, or by e-mail. UMPC pioneer, Xbox co-creator Berkes leaves Microsoft

Getaround is a brand new app launching today on the App Store that is designed to be a "peer-to-peer car rental marketplace." The idea is that it's like a Zipcar sort of service, but run peer-to-peer style, so anyone can rent their cars for just a few bucks an hour. There are little interesting details such as the Apple employee numbering scheme, which came out of necessity. Google opening seawater-cooled data center, finally glad it applied for that Wave trademark
Google raised a few eyebrows when it purchased a Finnish paper mill back in 2009 -- what, the world, wondered, would the king of cloud services want with reams of tree guts? Space for a data center, of course -- and a seawater-cooled one at that. Apple to patch against MacDefender, offers removal help
Apple tonight confirmed in a support document that it was patching the avenue for the MacDefender malware attack. The company promised a Mac OS X fix in "coming days" that would automatically detect and pull all known instances of MacDefender. Mac users would also get a warning if they downloaded it, the company said.

Splitfish is finally bringing its flagship PC and PS3 mouse controller to the Xbox, albeit packing an odd wireless caveat. iOS 5 rumor: iPhone 3GS to drop off supported list
Normally we don't give much credence to a single tweet pertaining to rumors about the next iPhone, but this one comes from Eldar Murtazin, editor-in-chief of mobile phone blog Mobile-Review. Murtazin has a history of accurately predicting mobile phone rumors and in this tweet he says that the iPhone 3GS will not be upgradable to iOS 5 when it debuts this fall: "Just one comment. Apple iPhone 3Gs wont be upgradable to iOS 5.x. iPhone 4 will."

Apple: Mac OS X update coming to block MacDefender malware
Tipster TJ just pointed us to a new Apple Support knowledge base article that describes how to avoid and remove the MacDefender malware. It's largely the same information that we have in our removal guide, but it's good to see that Apple is now making the instructions available for everyone. (Sample tip: "If any notifications about viruses or security software appear, quit Safari or any other browser that you are using.")

Apple updates Logic, Logic Express with bug fixes
Apple has updated its pro-audio software Logic Pro and Logic Express to v9.1.4, addressing a number of minor issues and adding support for working with Garageband projects created on the iPad. The changes are identical for both the Pro and Express versions, and include a fix for an issue where a generic interface would appear in 64-bit mode for some 32-bit plug-ins, and changes and improvements to performance, stability, automation, audio editing, control surface support and more.

Evernote offering developer competition, conference
Evernote has announced two big events for its developer community coming up later this year. First, the company is holding a competition with over $100,000 in prizes available to win. To enter, all developers need to do is build an app, service, or device that works with the Evernote system by July 15. The submissions will be judged over the subsequent week or two, and then in August, Evernote will announce six finalists. Some of those finalists will win some money, with a chance at a grand prize of $50,000. That's a nice payday for anyone willing to put some development time into extending Evernote out even further.
