iOS 5 won't run on iPhone 3GS, rumor claims
iOS 5 won't run on 2009's iPhone 3GS, claims analyst and Mobile Review editor Eldar Murtazin. "Just one comment. Apple iPhone 3Gs wont be upgradable to iOS 5.x. iPhone 4 will," he explains in a Twitter post. While there are no more statements to support the rumor, Murtazin has in the past obtained unexpectedly accurate information, such as early knowledge of the Nokia N8. Since a preview is anticipated at WWDC in early June, iOS 5 could be far enough into development for specifications to leak.

Software Update: Apple Logic Pro, Logic Express
Apple's music creation and audio production apps, Logic Pro and Logic Express, have just received updates via Software Update.
Both apps have been updated to version 9.1.4, which provides support for importing projects from Garage Band for iPad. The download for Logic Express is 138.74 MB in size, while that for Logic Pro weighs in at 192.48 MB.

e-G8 summit triggers backlash against French tech regulation
The e-G8 summit in Paris brought pressure on French president Nicolas Sarkozy for his comments on technology. Having argued for "minimum rules" that would have prevented sites like WikiLeaks from getting hosting and previously backed France's infamous three-strikes law, he was followed by a panel that rejected his calls for tighter regulation. T-Mobile's Bobsled voice service returns to Facebook, relationship status now less complicated
We're still waiting for some more news about its promised mobile apps, but T-Mobile's new Bobsled sub-brand has now cleared one big hurdle that was thrust in front of it. Apple asks Samsung for prototype devices
San Jose Judge Lucy Koh is forcing Samsung to hand over new and unreleased mobile devices to its rival Apple. Apple's lawyers will get a chance to look at these devices as part of its infringement case against Samsung. In this complaint, Apple is accusing Samsung of violating a variety of utility patents, design patents, and trade dress registrations for its suite of iOS devices.
The phones and tablets requested by Apple include the Samsung Galaxy S2, Galaxy Tab 8.9, Galaxy Tab 10.1, Infuse 4G and Droid Charge. Apple will be looking closely at the packaging and the Touchwiz UI used by the Korean man

AirPlay reaches Windows Media Center in beta app
Thomas Pleasance has released an AirPlay for Windows Media Center (WMC) Beta add-in. The app allows a user to run AirPlay transparently within WMC. The user can then share pictures or video originating from an iOS device such as an iPad on their TV or PC. The initial release does not support music.

Tablets taking noticeable toll on desktop, notebook sales
Media tablets, primarily the iPad, are beginning to have a serious impact on the sale of regular desktop and notebook computers, says research firm IHS iSuppli. The firm reports that global PC shipments amounted to 81.3 million units in Q1 2011, a decline of 0.3 percent from the 81.6 million tallied in Q1 2010. Three out of the top five PC makers recorded their own shipment declines, with the worst hit being the third-ranked Acer.

Gigabyte's ECO600 mouse passes through the FCC, boasts 12-month battery life
Gigabyte's ECO600 wireless laser mouse -- which was introduced last month -- just landed at the FCC, which means it and its tiny 2.4GHz adapter should be in the hands of consumers very soon. Kein iOS 5 für das iPhone 3GS?
Eldar Murtazin, ein russischer Analyst, hat vorhin per Twitter behauptet, dass das nächste große Update von iOS, iOS 5, welches auf der baldigen WWDC angekündigt werden soll, nicht mit dem iPhone 3GS laufen wird und damit nur das neue iPhone und das jetzige iPhone 4 mit iOS 5 kompatibel sein werden. Das iPhone 3G wurde erst mit Version 4.3 nicht mehr unterstützt, das Ur-iPhone wird seit iOS 4 nicht mehr aktualisiert. Bereits die aktuelle iOS-Version 4.3.3 läuft nicht allzu flüssig auf dem iPhone 3GS. Vermutlich wird ab dann auch die dritte Generation des iPod touch nicht mehr aktualisiert.[via]

Duke Nukem Forever goes gold, will meet promised June deadline (really!)
Back in January, Gearbox Software released a Duke Nukem Forever trailer, and our inner 13 year-old -- only a lascivious gleam in his father's eye when the game was first announced! -- thrilled to its potty humor, gratuitous violence, and mosaic-obscured lady parts. We were skeptical about the promised May release date, since DNF has long been gaming's answer to Chinese Democracy, and sure enough that got bumped to June 10 (international) and 14 (North America). Google NFC payment service due May 26 using Nexus S 4G
Google's rumored NFC-based payment system will be unveiled Thursday, three insiders leaked on Tuesday. The system would let those with a Nexus S 4G on Sprint use their devices to both buy goods and use coupons by waving the phone at a VeriFone-supplied terminal. Google hasn't the confirmed details provided by Bloomberg but is holding an event in New York City on Thursday that will likely discuss the NFC plans.

Google and Sprint team up to take your digital dollars with new NFC payment system?
There's been rumors of a Google-fied mobile payment system for some time, and now it looks like the Mountain View crew is teaming up with Sprint to finally make it happen. Last month, we heard that the Now Network would bring NFC payments to its customers this year, and Bloomberg reports that the partnership and payment system will make its debut on May 26th. Apple, publishers reportedly close to completing cloud music deal
Apple's music streaming service is inching closer to launch according to industry sources. Earlier rumors suggest Apple already inked licensing agreements with three of the four major record labels, including EMI Music, Warner Music and Sony Music. The one remaining holdout is Universal Music, which is still working with the Cupertino company.

NZXT stops being so sensitive with $40 Avatar S gaming mouse
It seems that the people at NZXT love gamers almost as much as they hate vowels. The company today took the wraps off of the Avatar S, a replacement for the already discontinued Avatar gaming mouse. The new model doesn't quite match the 2,600DPI of its predecessor -- instead it's got a 1,600 DPI laser sensor with three sensitivity settings: 1,600DPI, 800DPI, and 400DPI. FileMaker offers 50 percent off Bento/FileMaker Pro upgrade
Apple's FileMaker division is offering a temporary discount on upgrades to FileMaker Pro 11. Under the terms of the deal, owners of the company's Bento personal database software can upgrade to Pro 11 for $149, or 50 percent off the software's normal price. Leap joins in objections to AT&T, T-Mobile merger
Cricket's parent company Leap Wireless provided its own objection on Tuesday to AT&T's proposed buyout of T-Mobile. The carrier suggested that letting the deal go through would lead to "alarming concentration" by putting too much power in the hands of two carriers, AT&T and Verizon. MacHeist releases The Heist for iOS
The folks over at MacHeist are apparently revving up for another big sale, and this time to celebrate the event, they've gone all out. Previous versions of the sale have featured a web-based metagame, but this time the game has move onto iOS, with the release of a US$.099 app called The Heist.
It's very well done, of course, with plenty of secrets to figure out. Some of them are more traditional. The app has basically four different puzzle minigames (one's a Sudoku variant, while others are like sliding tile puzzles or the car parking puzzle game), each with a number of different puzzles to solve within them, all in the goal of opening up the big MacHeist door.

Foto einer angeblichen iPhone 5-Rückseite taucht auf
Apple.pro hat vorhin ein Foto einer vermeintlichen iPhone 5-Rückseite veröffentlicht. Diese Rückseite sieht genauso aus wie die des aktuellen iPhone 4, mit dem kleinen Unterschied, dass der Blitz für die Kamera nun auf der anderen Seite platziert ist. Bereits zuvor war eine Hülle aufgetaucht, die dieses Konzept unterstrich. Die neue Position des Blitzes wird zwar das Innenleben des Gerätes zwingen, etwas umzustrukturieren, dafür könnte dann aber mehr Platz für eine noch bessere Kamera frei gemacht werden. Neben einer vermuteten besseren Kamera wird unter anderem auch der vom neuen iPad bekannte A5-Prozessor im nächsten iPhone enthalten sein.Das Bild gibt’s hier:

EU proposal would ban wireless in schools without evidence
A European Union advisory body has recommended placing new limits on electromagnetic emission levels. This would include banning mobile phones and other devices from classrooms and schools. The new rules would also force Wi-Fi and cell transmission tower builders to consult with local authorities and interest groups before constructing any new towers.

Dear Aunt TUAW,
I love Evernote and use it regularly on my MacBook Pro and my iPhone. Lately, though, I'm finding myself in places with both devices, but the MacBook doesn't have an internet connection and is therefore unable to transfer data from one device to the other without attaching a cable. Since both devices have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth capabilities, it seems like there should be an easy solution to wirelessly transfer files that I would typically use Evernote for. Do you have any suggestions?

We always knew that Watson's powers extended well beyond the realm of TV trivia, and now IBM has provided a little more insight into how its supercomputer could help doctors treat and diagnose their patients. Largan anticipates 8MP lens modules for next iPhone
A Taiwanese supplier, Largan Precision, sees 8-megapixel lens modules replacing 5-megapixel ones as the mainstream for smartphones in the third quarter of 2011, according to local industry sources. The change is attributed to "possible orders from Apple," presumably for the next-generation iPhone, alternately dubbed the iPhone 5 or 4S. The claim backs earlier reports that Largan will supply lensing for sensors made by OmniVision. Currently just under 10 percent of Largan's lens modules are for 8-megapixel cameras.

AirPlay for Windows Media Center beta now available
Thomas Pleasance has released a beta of AirPlay for Windows Media Center, which does just what you think: it streams video and photos to a Windows Media Center PC via Apple's AirPlay.
To get started, install Apple's Bonjour for Windows and Pleasance's client on your Media Center PC. From there, fire up your iPhone or iPad and send over some photos or movies (note that music isn't supported yet).

Condé Nast rounded out its burst of iTunes subscription changeovers by adding two of its more popular magazines to the mix. Russian team cracks iOS 4 encryption
A group of Russian forensic experts, ElcomSoft, has successfully cracked both the hardware and firmware backup encryption for iOS devices, reports say. Partly to increase appeal to corporate buyers, Apple began introducing hardware encryption with the iPhone 3GS, later improving the system with iOS 4. The firmware lets people assign a passcode for the hardware encryption keys, making it even more difficult for an attacker to see data.

We're still waiting to get our first big bite of the full Mango experience after this morning's liveblog, but we were able to get a quick hands-on with a few of the apps making use of the operating system's new features. Chief among them is the History Channel app, which is making use of the augmented reality features that have been enabled. Samsung's Explore 3D video on demand service hits the US
Well, it looks like folks in the US didn't have to wait that long to get Samsung's new Explore 3D video on demand service after all. Just over a week after launching in the UK, the app has now made its way to capable Smart 3D TVs in the United States, complete with "dozens of pieces of free 3D content," including trailers, music videos and educational content. What's more, while it's limited to free content right now, Samsung says that it will expand into paid content "later this year," and offer feature films from some as yet unnamed major studios (no word on pricing just yet). Apple has confirmed that Steve Jobs will be presenting the keynote address at this year's WWDC this June in San Francisco according to this post by Charles Jade over at Gigaom. Jobs will be discussing key Apple technology including "Application Frameworks, Internet & Web, Graphics & Media, Developer Tools, and Core OS."

Nokia has noted Microsoft's announcement of Windows Phone 7.1 (aka Mango) with word that the software being demonstrated today will be the one we'll see on the first Nokia with Windows Phone device. That's singular, not plural, indicating that Nokia might start off with one phone and work its way up. It also slightly contracts the roadmap for the first handset born from the Microkia partnership, though Nokia's statement makes sure not to make any promises about when said device will show up. Brazilian president Dilma Rousseff has signed a provisional measure exempting tablet makers from 9.25 percent in social security taxes, while also reducing the IPI industrial production tax from 15 to 3 percent, according to Forbes. Apple has unofficially reached 500,000 approved iOS apps in the App Store. The report comes in the form of an infographic from 148Apps, Chillingo and Chomp. The group has assembled a Facebook page to celebrate the milestone.

Bevor jetzt jemand Zeter und Mordio schreit, weil die Verwendung von Super Nintendo Cartridges zur Konstruktion eines Urinals Frevel an der Oldschool-Gamer-Seele ist: Die verwendeten Cartridges waren in diesem Fall kaputt oder sie beinhalteten "wertlose Sportspiele". OK. Das lässt natürlich Raum für Interpretationen und Diskussionen. Opera Mini 6 arrives for iOS with iPad support

T-Mobile on Tuesday expanded its fledgling 42Mbps HSPA+ network and gave it a native USB modem to match. A total of 55 areas now have the doubled network speeds. The expansion includes a large suite of major cities, including Atlanta, Chicago, Denver, Detroit, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, New Orleans, Phoenix, Pittsburgh, Portland in Oregon, and San Francisco.

iOS-Verschlüsselung geknackt: Keine Chance für AES-256

As expected, the second game from PopCap's sub-studio 4th and Battery hit the App Store last week, and I like it a lot more than I did Unpleasant Horse. Candy Train is actually an older PopCap title that was originally posted online, and it's been brought back as a free universal app for iOS. iPhone 4S back supposedly turns up
Chinese outfit WeiBusi on Tuesday posted a photo of what's purported to be the back of the next iPhone, which many are tentatively referring to as the iPhone 4S. The white shell matches up with that of a very early case design and, in keeping with recently mentioned parts, points to a moved camera flash that sits opposite the camera itself. The design superficially resembles that of an iPhone 4, although that couldn't be verified without the rest of the body.

Foxconn: Werksexplosion wird Fertigung des iPad nicht beeinträchtigen
Terry Gou, Chairman der Foxconn-Mutter Hon Hai, hat einem Bericht der China Times zufolge bei einem Treffen mit Lieferanten erklärt, dass die Explosion im Werk Chengdu im Südwesten Chinas keine Auswirkungen auf die Fertigung von Apple-Produkten wie dem iPad haben wird. Einem Bericht von The Hacker News zufolge sind Unbekannte in Webserver von Sony Music Griechenland eingebrochen. Sie erbeuteten angeblich Namen und E-Mail-Adressen von bis zu 8300 Nutzern. Review: Apple 27-Zoll iMac Core i7 (Mai 2011)
Eigentlich ist es eine seltsame Geschichte. Es gibt wohl keinen Computer, den ich so gut kenne wie den iMac. Angefangen von den allerersten G3-iMacs aus dem Jahr 1998 bis hin zu den Intel-iMacs der vergangenen Jahre durfte ich so ziemlich jede Modellgeneration kennen lernen.
Als ich früher in der Schule das Freifach Videofilmen besuchte, schnitten wir unsere Videos auf einem iMac DV. Mit der allerersten Version von Apples iMovie, nebenbei bemerkt. Später stand Zuhause auf dem Schreibtisch ein iMac G4. Auf demselben Schreibtisch steht auch heute noch ein iMac, wenn auch ein rund sieben Jahre jüngeres Modell. Wohin man auch blickt, auch im Zeitalter von MacBooks und iPads ist der iMac noch immer omnipräsent.
Was ist an dieser Geschichte nun seltsam? Ganz einfach: Nämlich die Tatsache, dass es auch nach 13 Jahren noch immer jedes Mal ein aufregendes Erlebnis ist, einen neuen iMac auszupacken, ihn einzuschalten und sich über Apples All-in-one-Rechner zu freuen.

Toshiba backing out on Chromebooks and Windows 7 tablets
Toshiba has reportedly scrapped plans to support Chromebooks and Windows 7 tablets based on PC business leaks. 'Invisible' touchscreen prototype tested with iPhone
The video on the next page features a prototype for an "invisible" iPhone created by researchers at the Hasso Plattner Institute in Germany. Basically, the idea is that with your iPhone in your pocket, you can hold your hand out and move your finger around on it as if you were holding your phone, and those movements will be picked up by a motion sensor elsewhere, and then sent back to your handset. i-Buddie Oak Trail tablet makes cameo at MeeGo Conference 2011
Well what do we have here? We were loitering around the Intel booth here at the MeeGo Conference in San Francisco when we spotted this lonely little device resting unsupervised in the back, so we decided to give it a whirl and snap some pictures. It turns out it's a circa 10-inch tablet made by i-Buddie and built on Intel's recent Oak Trail architecture. Of course it's running MeeGo, but sadly we were unable to connect to the Internet -- something to do with missing WiFi drivers, according to the Intel rep who eventually caught up with us to snatch the tablet

Microsoft's Ballmer confirms Windows 8 due in 2012

SquareTrade torture tests the iPad 2 by dropping it on cement
Personally, I wouldn't deliberately drop my iPad 2 on cement, but the folks at SquareTrade were crazy enough to let not one, but two iPads fall to a sidewalk. The first drop was waist-high and included both a bare iPad 2 and one encased in a smart cover. As expected, the naked iPad suffered a cracked screen so bad it will make you cringe. The iPad with the smart cover, though, survived unscathed.
Taking the test one step further, the group dropped the smart cover iPad from shoulder height which is about a four to five foot drop. Sadly, the second trial ended poorly for the iPad 2. The smart cover popped off from the impact and the screen suffered some peripheral damage. It wasn't a total loss as the screen was not shattered, but the cracks on

Google recently rolled out the beta release of Chrome 12, and now Cr-48 owners are getting a matching version of Chrome OS. [update] Patent-Drama abgeschmettert: Apple zeigt seine Lizenzen
Das Patent-Drama um Lodsys, mit seinen juristischen Drohungen an Indie-iOS-Entwickler für 'In-App'-Kaufangebote, habe ich an dieser Stelle bislang umschifft. Die Forderung nach 0.5-Prozent aller Einnahmen aus den jeweiligen iOS-Verkäufen, hielt ich für absurd. Insbesondere wenn die dazugehörige Infrastruktur als Teil des Entwickler-Pakets angeboten wird oder zumindest in dieser Form im App Store Verbreitung findet.

GoPano micro + Dot: 360°-Aufnahmen mittels iPhone-Aufsatz
iPhone-Adapter für Panorama-Aufnahmen liegen scheinbar schwer im Trend. Kickstarter-Projekt 'GoPano micro' erreichte bis zum 14. Mai 2.685 Unterstützer und geht folglich demnächst in Produktion.
Auch Operation: 'Dot' möchte $20.000 US-Dollar an Startkapital eintreiben. Nach fünf Tagen ist bereits die Hälfte dieser Summe vorgemerkt. Die restlichen 41 Tage sollten daher kein Problem darstellen.

Dell intros XPS 15z early, makes doubtful 'thinnest' claim
Dell skipped formal announcements and gave Australia, Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia, and Taiwan sales of the XPS 15z. The design is supposedly the thinnest 15-inch notebook in the world at 0.97 inches and is also light, at 5.5 pounds. Its design is less conspicuously based on the MacBook Pro with a black palmrest but still has numerous similarities, down to the five-dot battery life indicator, grilles, and backlit keyboard.

Apple acquires over 200 Freescale Semiconductor patents
Patently O has discovered that Apple purchased over 200 patents from Freescale Semiconductor on April 11th of this year. However, the patent purchase was not disclosed until May 18. Freescale Semiconductor was formerly Motorola's Semiconductor Product Sector until the electronics giant spun off the company in 2003.

Researchers create 26 terabit-per-second connections with just a single laser
Remember that pair of 100 terabit-per-second connections we told you about earlier this moth? Impressive? The Nike+ app for iOS devices has reached its fifth birthday, prompting the company to offer the app free for a limited time. Kogeto Dot takes panoramic video with the iPhone 4
The Kogeto Dot is an interesting little device. It's a lens that attaches to your iPhone 4, and allows you to shoot 360 degree panoramic video with the iPhone's little camera. Engadget tried it out and they found it a little awkward -- you have to hold the iPhone perpendicular to the floor as you shoot, which means you can't actually see the screen unless you're holding it high above your head. But usability really isn't the emphasis here -- the lens comes with an app that will straighten out your video and even allow you to stream it right from the iPhone, so portability is the main driver in this case.

iOS may make up 80% of mobile video viewing
A new study (PDF) from video monetizer FreeWheel has suggested that Apple devices may dominate mobile video viewing by a wide margin. Tracking across its five billion-plus video ads, it found that almost 80 percent of mobile video watching took place on an iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch, leaving Android 20 percent. The iPhone and iPod were joint leaders at 30 percent where the year-old iPad still matched the entire Android platform.

Deja for iPad latest in crop of 'video-feed' iPad apps
Building on the idea of a "Flipboard for video," Deja is a new app for iPad that aims to bring a relaxed video-browsing and viewing experience to Apple's popular tablet. The program draws from a variety of expected sources (YouTube, Google video, RSS streams, Twitter and Facebook) and also offers curated "channels" and Airplay support. The program is expected to go live on the iTunes App Store shortly, and offers a "lean back" experience similar to one of YouTube's options, where selected or related videos can play in a continuous "playlist" if the user desires.

80% of mobile videos watched happen on iOS devices
The New York Times is reporting on a FreeWheel study [PDF] that says the majority of video views that happen on a mobile device occur on an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. The iPhone and iPod touch account for a 30% share each, while the iPad accounts for a 20% share. About 19% of video views happen on an Android device with the remaining 1% happening on all other mobile devices.

Salesforce chief: Microsoft fails because of 'Zune strategy'
Salesforce chief Marc Benioff squared off against Microsoft in an earnings call late last week that boiled Microsoft's more recent failures to a single method. Calling it the "Zune strategy," he argued that Microsoft kept repeating the strategy it took with its self-designed but largely unsuccessful MP3 player, expecting different results. Along with failing to topple Salesforce's Sales Cloud with CRM Dynamics, Microsoft had tried to push Windows tablets and the Zune as iPad and iPod rivals without having anything special beyond the brand name and price.

Kogeto intros 360-degree panorama add-on for iPhone 4
Kogeto has announced Dot, a video accessory for the iPhone 4. Dot is actually a special optical device that fits over the iPhone's existing lens to produce a 360-degree view.
