Apple Digital Camera RAW and Apple Prokit updates available
Fire up Software Update, sports fans; there are two updates available this afternoon for slightly obscure corners of the Mac OS X world.
First, it's the Digital Camera RAW compatibility update version 3.7, which adds import savvy to iPhoto '11 and Aperture for several cameras: the Fujifilm FinePix X100, Nikon D5100, Olympus E-PL2, Olympus XZ-1 and the Samsung GX-1S. The 6.62 MB update requires Mac OS X 10.6.6 or 10.5.8; for information on all the RAW formats supported in Mac OS X 10.6, check here.

Apple proposing smaller SIM standard?
It looks like the Micro SIM (announced with Apple's first iPad last year) is destined to shed a few more grams, an Orange spokeswoman said -- contradicting an earlier rumor claiming that Apple is trying to kill off the chip altogether. SIM cards in their current form have been in use for over a decade (a Micro SIM is simply a standard chip without the extra plastic), and today's devices look nothing like the cell phones of 2001, so it's no surprise that the SIM we've come to love and

Verizon tries again, sues to block FCC data roaming rule
Verizon on Tuesday sued the FCC to try and stop its new data roaming requirement. The carrier repeated arguments like those it has used to try and block net neutrality and argued that the FCC didn't have the authority to regulate roaming deals. It avoided a mistake it made in the neutrality case and waited until the rule was in the official register to launch its case.

HP releases 2011 Q2 earnings early, following leak of foreboding internal memo
HP kicked off this morning's Q2 earnings call citing a leaked company memo that recently popped up at Bloomberg. That memo, which had the outfit's CEO, Leo Apotheker warning of "another tough quarter," resulted in a five percent drop in HP shares in after-hours trading Monday, according to the Wall Street Journal, and prompted the release of the outfit's Q2 earning a day ahead of schedule -- an earnings call was originally slated for Wednesday. According to the report, the company managed to pull in $31.6 billion in revenue and $2.3 billion in earnings, compared to $30.8 billion in revenue and $2.2 billion in earnings the same time last year.

Apple to make first-ever appearance at BookExpo America
Apple will make its first-ever appearance at BookExpo America later this month, reports note. The expo represents the largest industry book fair in the US, and this year is scheduled to run from May 23rd through to the 26th. Apple is said to have secured a large booth in an ideal location: in the same general area as Disney, Random House and Macmillan, and immediately next to Scholastic. Disney's largest individual shareholder is Apple CEO Steve Jobs, who also sits on the Disney board of directors.

Samson Meteor Mic USB studio microphone: Solid quality in a compact package
Depending on how you look at it, the Samson Meteor Mic USB studio microphone (US$149.99 SRP, available from online retailers for about $100) looks like a little rocket, a silver bullet, R2D2's best friend, or just another mic. News: Audience chip behind iPhone 4 noise cancellation

Garmin nuLink! 2390 torn apart by FCC, put back together again on US site
Last week Garmin announced the latest member of its high-end GPS navigator family, the nuLink! 2390. Sadly, it was a Europe only affair, leaving American consumers wondering why the company was giving us the cold shoulder. (Whatever it was baby, we're sorry, come back.) Sony to bring Thunderbolt in the shape of a USB jack?
An upcoming Sony Vaio ultraportable notebook may implement Intel's 10Gbps Thunderbolt technology in the form of a Type-A USB jack, rather than Apple's Mini DisplayPort connector for the same interface. This is not official, but comes from a 'trusted source,' according to Engadget. The so-called Ultimate Mobile PC that hosts Thunderbolt is likely the same one seen in the past.

Paramount Digital Entertainment has released a Super 8 camera emulator for iOS to help promote the release of the upcoming film of the same name. Super 8 allows users to record films in the style of a vintage Super 8 film camera, adding lens, filter and shake effects. Apple pushing for smaller SIM card standard with Orange's backing
An Orange executive told Reuters that Apple has proposed a standardized SIM card that is smaller than those currently found in the iPad and iPhone 4. Apple says the design would allow the company to produce thinner mobile devices.
Orange's head of mobile services, Anne Bouverot, told Reuters that "We were quite happy to see last week that Apple has submitted a new requirement to (European telecoms standards body) ETSI for a smaller SIM form factor -- smaller than the one that goes in iPhone 4 and iPad. They have done that through the standardization route, through ETSI, with the sponsorship of some major mobile operators, Orange being one of them."

Infinity Blade: Arena coming out May 19
The long-awaited multiplayer update to Epic Games' iOS hit Infinity Blade has finally been revealed, and will be landing on the App Store later on this week. The update is called Infinity Blade: Arena, and allows players to play as a Titan or a Knight, battling against their friends. The mechanics aren't completely clear yet, but as you can see above, the battles will have players hacking and slashing against each other, close enough to the game's standard format.

KDDI announces Android-based INFOBAR A01 smartphone with glanceable iida UI
There's been a few smartphones exclusive to Japan as of late that we'd like to see available over here, but perhaps none more so than KDDI's just-announced INFOBAR A01, which is set to hit the country in July. Intel promises x86 phones early 2012, 14nm Atom chips
Intel during investment presentations Tuesday promised a more definite track for his company's struggling mobile plans. At one event, CEO Paul Otellini said the company's earlier plan for mobile was "inadequate" and would focus on even lower-powered designs that would move twice as quickly as Moore's Law. Along with the 32 nanometer version of the Atom, Saltwell, the executive also acknowledged the 22nm Silvermont and ultimately a 14nm version, Airmont, within three years.

Those with an artistic bent have been making color-isolated photos in Photoshop for years, but a recent crop of quick and easy tools for doing just that has allowed novices (like me) to create some of the same beautiful photos in a fraction of the time.
ColorWash, currently US$0.99 in the Mac App Store, is one such program. It allows you to make color-isolated photos in minutes. You load your image of choice into the app, which will then remove all color from it, giving you a grayscale photo canvas. Study finds Netflix is the largest source of internet traffic in North America
In your daily Netflix news, the latest report on Global Internet Phenomena for spring 2011 from Sandvine has called out the movie service as the largest single consumer of bandwidth on the internet in North America. The last report in October suggested it made up around twenty percent of internet traffic during prime time, but this time around the stats say it accounts for 30% of traffic during prime time, and 22.2% of daily internet traffic. Apple 'actively investigating' Lodsys claims
Apple's legal department is "actively investigating" patent claims made against iOS developers by Lodsys, says The Guardian. The UK newspaper notes that "about a dozen" developers have been served with papers so far. At least some of the companies have reportedly passed along Lodsys' complaints to Apple. The latter should respond to the issue later this week, the Guardian writes.

Apple to exhibit at BookExpo America for the first time
Apple is making a rare appearance at a third-party trade show later this month. The company has reserves a booth in a "prime location" at BookExpo America, which runs from May 23-26. BookExpo America is the largest trade book fair in America and Apple's booth will be situated by the booths of Random House, Disney Book Group, and MacMillian.
PaidContent seems to think that Apple is simply attending the BookExpo to raise awareness of its iBooks platform as ebook sales heat up, and isn't expecting Apple to announce any iBook-related updates. LG Revolution finally landing at Verizon on May 26th
We thought it'd be here by now. We thought it'd be the first with Netflix. We thought a lot of things about the LG Revolution, but now we're closer to knowing the truth. Apple proposes smaller-than-micro SIM card for 2012
French carrier Orange on Tuesday revealed that Apple had put forward a new standard for SIM cards that would even smaller than the micro SIMs in the iPhone 4 and all iPads. Mobile services lead Anne Bouverot said Apple had suggested it to the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) with the endorsement of Orange and other, carriers unnamed in a speetch at a Reuters summit. Lodsys vs. Apple Devs: EFF helps us dig deeper
The developers targeted by Lodsys's patent infringement accusations last week have been in a sleepless holding pattern, awaiting response from Apple before making their next moves. Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) staff attorney Julie Samuels says that Apple legal is likely hard at work reviewing the patent in question, however, and should be in touch soon. A new review from MobileSyrup that tests the limits of G-Form's upcoming iPad Extreme Sleeve has been posted online. In the video review the tester begins by tossing an iPad 2 around in the sleeve, and ends by running over the device with a vehicle. Throughout all of the stress tests the iPad receives no physical damage and remains in full working condition. STMicroelectronics bringt kompaktes Sensorpaket für exakte Positionsbestimmung in Gebäuden

STMicroelectronics hat ein Modul zur Positionsbestimmung in Gebäuden geschnürt, das die Bewegung des Nutzers so genau erfasst, dass seine Position von den letzten erfassten GPS-Koordinaten ausgehend exakt errechnet werden kann. Dazu kombiniert STMicroelectronics die Daten eines Gyroskops (4 x 4 x 1 mm), eines Luftdrucksensors (3 x 5 x 1 mm) und eines Kompasses (3 x 3 x 1 mm) mittels eigens entwickelter Software namens iNEMO, die "dramatisch" verbesserte Ergebnisse bei der abgeleiteten Ortsbestimmung liefern soll. Internetkriminalität: Bayerische Polizei hebt in Augsburg Betrügerbande aus
In enger Kooperation haben das Bayerische Landeskriminalamt (LKA) und das österreichische Bundeskriminalamt acht Tatverdächtige in Augsburg und Niederösterreich festgenommen. Die Staatsanwaltschaft Augsburg ermittelt seit 18 Monaten gegen sie - wegen Verdachts auf gewerbs- und bandenmäßigen Betrug. Apple takes home SID awards for iPad, iPhone 4 displays
Two Apple screens have won Gold awards as part of the Society for Information Display's Display of the Year Awards. Study claims nearly all Android devices leak account info
A newly published study from the University of Ulm in Germany has revealed that virtually every Android device has a major flaw in how they handle app security and could leak personal information. An authentication protocol apps need to use, ClientLogin, delivers its authentication token in clear text on at least Android 2.3 and earlier. The lack of protection not only makes the information easy to intercept but is reusable for two weeks after it's first sent, making it easily exploitable once detected.

Sprint leads, AT&T lags in cellphone service ranks
The latest quarterly report on customer satisfaction from the American Customer Satisfaction Index found that AT&T and T-Mobile's scores have dropped while Sprint is now at the top. The overall customer satisfaction score with wireless telephone services has dropped by 1.4 percent to a score of 71 but is stronger than it was before 2010. Sprint showed the best increase over the course of three years, from trailing the second worst provider by 15 points to the top of the pack.

Apple Stores installing new payment tech, sources claim
Apple's retail chain in the process of installing new payment technology, multiple sources with the company claim. The company's iPod touch-based sale terminals are said to have recently gone offline for an entire day, taken down in order to perform "maintenance." Nuance voice samples provide a taste of Lion text-to-speech
As we reported on May 14, Lion Developer Preview 3 includes a number of voices from Nuance's RealSpeak Solo software that can be used for text-to-speech (TTS) operations in the OS. Deckenlampe mit integrierter Spülmaschine recycelt Wasser

Da hat die Fanatasie des Designers Kim Joonmin wohl einen ordentlichen Hüpfer gemacht: Seine fiktive Electrolux-Spülmaschine ist in der Deckenlampe untergebracht, was praktisch sein könnte, weil man Besteck und Geschirr direkt über dem Esstisch einräumen kann. Aber um dieses Konzept zu verwirklichen müsste erst noch das hundertprozentige Spülwasserrecycling auf kleinstem Raum erfunden werden. Und die Angst vor Überschwemmungen des Esstischs überwunden.

NVIDIA unveils GeForce GTX 560, Tesla M2090
NVIDIA on Tuesday set out to lure more mid-range gamers and professionals by introducing both the regular, non-Ti version of the GeForce GTX 560 as well as a new Tesla card. The new card trips down just enough to drop the price down to $199 with 336 stream (visual effects) processors, 56 texture address units, and at least an 810MHz core clock speed, 1.62GHz effects shader clocks and 1GHz GDDR5 memory. While its core and texture unit counts are similar to the outgoing GTX 460, the newer design and higher clock speeds should make it noticeably faster.

HP chooses USB 3.0 over Thunderbolt
PC World is reporting that the world's largest computer manufacturer has chosen USB 3.0 over Intel's Thunderbolt port in its new desktop PCs. HP's worldwide desktop marketing manager told PC World that "We did look at [Thunderbolt]. We're still looking into it. Haven't found a value proposition yet."

Rumor: NFC payments coming to Apple Stores soon?
It may be a case of putting the cart before the horse, but Boy Genius Report suggests that some of the retail rumblings coincident with the Apple Stores' 10th anniversary (coming this week) may have to do with the stores being equipped to take payments via Near Field Communications (NFC) setups. Presumably the existing EasyPay system could be swapped out for NFC-enabled iPod touch handhelds with a handy-dandy sled, giving Apple a solid test platform for future NFC hardware in other devices.

HP downplays Thunderbolt in favor of USB 3.0
PC maker HP is, at least for the time being, choosing USB 3.0 over Thunderbolt, according to IDG News. "We did look at [Thunderbolt]. We're still looking into it. Rushed HP results show small gains, steep drop in home PCs
HP in the wake of its CEO's leaked memo decided to rush its quarterly results to this morning in a sign of deeper trouble with its home PC business. The company saw its revenue and profit go up by three and five percent each year-over-year, to $31.6 billion and $2.3 billion, but were buoyed primarily by better enterprise sales. Apple yet to OK sub-30nm flash memory from Samsung, Toshiba
Apple hasn't yet approved flash memory below 30 nanometers in size, insiders purportedly said Tuesday. Neither Samsung's 20nm flash nor Toshiba's 24nm variety had been certified for Apple. Explanations weren't given by Digitimes' sources as to why or when Apple might opt in.

BMW will Unfälle zukünftig vielleicht auch mit Hilfe Linksabbiegeassistenten verhindern helfen: Das Assistenzsystem ist für niedrige Geschwindigkeiten unter 10 km/h ausgelegt und soll automatisch Linksabiegeabsichten erkennen und im Zweifelsfall Kollisionen durch beherztes Bremsen vermeiden. Dabei kommen Daten aus dem Navigationssystem, eine Kamera und drei Laserscanner zum Einsatz, mit denen das Fahrzeug im Zweifelsfall einen besseren Überblick haben soll, als der Fahrer. Was plant Apple zum Retail-Store-Jubiläum?
Übermorgen feiert der erste Apple Retail Store sein zehnjähriges Jubiläum. Laut einem Bericht von Boy Genius Report plant Apple anlässlich dieses Geburtstages eine spezielle Produkteinführung oder Rabattaktion. Um was es sich dabei genau handeln könnte, ist noch unklar, Apple-Store-Mitarbeiter werden aber bereits auf einen Event am Wochenende vorbereitet. Von Samstag auf Sonntag plant Apple Nachtschichten für zehn bis 15 Mitarbeiter pro Store, wobei die entsprechenden Mitarbeiter ihre Handys abgeben und eine Verschwiegenheitserklärung unterzeichnen müssen. Mozilla plant Zwangsupdate für Firefox-3.5-Nutzer

Found Footage: Three iPhones, one video
This video, called Trapped in an Phone and watchable after the break, is pretty ingenious. Artists Ronen Verbit and Vanya Polunin apparently took three different videos and assembled them to play on three different iPhones, both standing on their own and moved around as they play to fit different setups.
Make sure you stick around to the end as well, where there's a little fourth wall breaking, some also-ingenious credits made possible by an iPhone and the revelation that the whole thing was apparently filmed by an iPhone as well (you can see the reflection in the last shot). Pretty wild stuff.

Software developers rely on a variety of ways to protect against unauthorized copying and use of their programs, but non-application files also need licensing or anti-piracy protection in some cases. Apple's iPad 2 coming to Taiwan May 20th?
Apple has yet to confirm an official launch for the iPad 2 in Taiwan, creating pent-up demand as potential buyers wait for it and other tablets come to market so they can make comparisons, a report in DigiTimes says. The rumor mill has the launch set for May 20th, while other sources offer more conservative estimates of one to two weeks. Tablet makers, including Apple, continue to have difficulty balancing supply and demand worldwide, with both Asustek and Acer (among others) reporting shortages.

Traditional electronic watches may be practical, but there's nothing elegant about battery power. With the Eole watch concept, designer Julien Moise envisioned a device that's powered by blown air, displaying the time only when you want to see it. HP PC shipments bouncing back from quake, but just on target
Part suppliers said Monday night that HP was shipping many more notebook PCs in May and June. Shortages caused in part from the Tohoku earthquake in Japan, particularly optical drives, have reportedly cleared up and would see shipments ramp up to as many as 4.15 million in May and five million in June. Both would nonetheless just be on target, according to Digitimes, and would be getting back to levels planned from before the disaster.

T-Mobile confirms gratis WiFi calling for the magenta-clad masses
Last week, the online grapevine foretold that T-Mobile users would have complimentary calling over WiFi. Now, the pink provider's powers that be have made good on the gossip and officially made free WiFi calling official. BMW left turn assistant uses lasers to help you avoid running people over
BMW continues to fight the good fight: making sure you hit less people with its luxury vehicles. The German automaker is developing a vehicle warning system aimed at curbing collisions caused by drivers making left turns -- a leading cause of accidents and motorcycle fatalities. The system, which can be enabled for vehicles making left or U-turns while traveling under 10mph, detects movements using the vehicle's navigation system and a single camera. Once a left turn is recognized, three lasers are used to scan for hazards up to 328-feet away -- if one is detected, the car will automatically brake and throw up corresponding alerts for the driver. The US Senate on Monday put out a request for a second Senate hearing on "consumer privacy and protection in the mobile marketplace." Following just a week after the first hearing, Apple's worldwide government affairs head Catherine Novelli, Google's Americas public policy leader Alan Davidson, and Facebook CTO Bret Taylor will testify at a hearing on May 19. Toshiba 4-inch 720p display for Apple?
Toshiba announced their lineup of products that will be displayed at their booth at SID 2011. Among their products will be a 4-inch 720p display for mobile phones. Rumors have been floating around for a while now that Apple was investing in a Toshiba-owned manufacturing facility for retina displays and a 720p display on an iPhone would certainly qualify as retina. Condé Nast adds additional publications to iPad subscription options
Condé Nast was rumored to be reconsidering its pricing of subscription content on the iPad, but apparently that won't keep the publisher from expanding its offerings anyway. The company is going to be offering Allure, Glamour, Golf Digest and Vanity Fair on the mix, so users who want to subscribe to that content will be able to so do soon.
In-app subscriptions will run $19.99, with options available for monthly subscriptions or just individual back issues. And of course, if you're already a print subscriber to any of those publications, there will be a way to enter your information and get free access to the iPad content.

HP chief warns of tough spring quarter due to slow home PCs
HP CEO Leo Apotheker has warned staff in a new company memo that the company is likely to face more trouble in its current quarter ending in July. Echoing an outlook warning from February that proved true for the winter, he said it would be "another tough quarter" and demanded that every division cut back on expenses. The company had to "watch every penny" and keep new hires to a minimum, Apotheker said in Bloomberg's version of the note.

Munster: Mac sales off to 'slow' start in April, but Q3 looks good
Piper Jaffray's Gene Munster issued a report on Apple's Mac sales so far this quarter. According to U.S. sales data compiled by NPD, Apple was off to a "slow" start in April, with only 9% year over year growth from April 2010 sales. However, Munster points out that by the same timeframe in 2010 Apple had updated their MacBook and MacBook Pro lines, which spiked sales. This year so far only the MacBook Pros have been updated.

Samsung Exhibit 4G coming to T-Mobile on June 8th?
It wasn't even two weeks ago that we first glimpsed the Samsung Exhibit 4G for T-Mobile in the wild (and spied its FCC footprint). Now it looks like this Gingerbread phone will go on sale June 8th -- if this flyer sent in to TmoNews is to be believed. Still no word on pricing, though we know dealers will pay $325 a pop. To recap, a peek at the filing and unauthorized photos reveals the Exhibit 4G is an HSPA + handset running TouchWiz on top of Android 2.3, with front and rear-facing cameras, an LED flash in the back, and a microSD card slot.
