MobileMe mail service experiencing problems
I've been having problems getting MobileMe email all day today. So have lots of other people. The problems seem to be with both IMAP servers and on accessing email on the MobileMe member page. To be fair, some of us at TUAW haven't had any problems with MobileMe today and Apple's MobileMe status page also mentions that only some MobileMe subscribers are experiencing problems.
I actually love MobileMe. It's a godsend how integrated it is into OS X and iOS. However, the service has had a history of spottiness ever since its launch in 2008 -- something Steve Jobs has been keenly aware of and frustrated with. In last week's Fortune "Inside Apple" article Steve Jobs wa

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 arrives as corporate rival to MacBook Air
After numerous leaks, Lenovo tonight brought out its first halo notebook in years through the ThinkPad X1. The 13.3-inch system is the thinnest ThinkPad to date at no more than 0.83 inches but promises to trump the MacBook Air by overcoming the usual barriers in the class. TiVo makes Premiere price change permanent with higher rates
TiVo today chose to permanently alter its Premiere DVR pricing to draw in some viewers. Starting May 19, the company will now permanently sell the core Premiere for $100 on a year-long contract for those willing to pay $20 per month and the Premiere XL plus Premium Remote bundle for $300 on the same rates. Paying $500 now gets a Product Lifetime deal that gives service for free for the life of the hardware, up $100 from before.

Rumor: Apple planning something in stores for retail anniversary
Just this morning we were hearing rumors that Apple was planning some sort of event for this weekend's retail anniversary, and now BGR has heard that there's a flurry of activity behind the counter at Apple Stores. There's some overnight shifts planned for this weekend, black curtains to go up and hide the storefronts, secret information going out to managers and trainers, and mandatory meetings for all employees on Sunday.

$4,000 Leica lens split in two, sold on eBay as $1,000 piece of art
Discontinued products typically dip in value, but such is not the case with Leica lenses -- unless they're sawed in half. Leica students had an opportunity to "make" cutaways of two Leica lenses as part of a graduation project. A discontinued Tri-Elmar-M 28-35-50mm (valued at about $4,500 when fully functional) and a 50mm f/1.4 Summilux (about $3,700) were split, exposing various layers of glass and metal. NPD numbers show 'slow' April Mac sales
April Mac sales were comparatively slow, according to new NPD numbers quoted by Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster. US sales data shows that units increased by about 9 percent year-over-year. The problem, notes Munster, is that in the same timeframe in 2010, Apple released updated MacBooks which spiked sales. The only Mac notebooks which have been updated in 2011 so far are MacBook Pros.

HP x2301 Micro Thin monitor makes other displays feel bloated, insecure
Those new desktops HP unveiled today are little more than humming foot rests without a monitor, so the company also trotted out the x2301 Micro Thin -- a 23-inch, LED-backlit, 1080p display that's an absolutely anorexic 9.8mm (0.39 inches) thick. Most of the important internals have been shoved into the blue-tinted base to keep the brushed aluminum and glossy black screen as thin as possible. FX Photo Studio now for Mac OS X
I took a look at FX Photo Studio on the iPad earlier this year and gave it a positive review. Now the app has migrated to the Mac App Store, so that users who want to work on a desktop or laptop Mac can modify, adjust and remake their images using similar tools to the iOS versions. I've been using FX Photo Studio Pro for about a week and imported many of my images to see how it worked. The app is no substitute for Photoshop, but for the casual photographer who wants to explore filters, do basic sharpening, level adjustments, color balance, crop, rotate and change the color saturation of images, I think the app is worthwhile.

Apple may have a "major product launch" scheduled for May 19th or shortly thereafter, a source with the company suggests. Nuance voices found in OS X Lion, patent application suggests new iPhone speech / text capabilities
Apple's certainly no stranger to speech recognition, but it looks like it may have enlisted a bit of outside help for the next version of OS X, otherwise known as Lion. Toshiba teases dense 367PPI phone LCDs, Time Sequential 3D
Toshiba Mobile Display is using the SID screen expo this week to show a line of extremely dense smartphone-sized displays. The screens, all of them LTPS (low temperature polycrystalline silicon) LCDs, range in size from 3.3 inches to four inches but are all much sharper than usual displays at these sizes. Resolutions start at 480x864 for the smallest screen and scale up to 1280x720 (720p) for the four-inch screen, achieving an even higher density than Apple's iPhone 4 at 367 pixels per inch.

iOS 5 speech recognition concept showcased in video
Recent rumors and a patent application suggest an upcoming version of iOS will include some form of speech recognition. Inspired by these revelations, graphic designer Jan-Michael Cart created a short video that shows how Apple could add this speech-to-text functionality to iOS 5.

Dass die Herrschaften bei Think Geek auch über eine gute Portion Humor verfügen, wussten wir eigentlich schon alle. Next-generation iPhone reportedly will not feature NFC payments
The past year has seen a flood of speculation about whether or not future iPhones would feature Near Field Communication (NFC) capabilities. NFC technology would embed a special chip into your phone; waving the phone at a reader near a cash register would automatically pay for those items from one of your accounts.

Verizon expands 4G network in a number of new cities
As part of its ongoing 2011 market expansion, Verizon on Monday announced that its 4G LTE network will be available in a number of new markets this week. Toshiba just fired its own salvo in the pixel density wars at SID 2011. The company is showing off a range of LCDs for cellphones that top out at an almost imperceptibly fine 367ppi on its 4-inch HD (720 x 1280) model. Apple: Neue Developer-Preview von Mac OS X Lion ausgeliefert
Das dritte Update für die im März vorgestellte Developer Preview 2 von Mac OS X 10.7 Lion bietet einige interessante Neuerungen. So wurde das unter Reading List bekannte Feature von Safari in dem aktuellen Build 11A459e freigeschaltet. Dadurch können Anwender Links für das spätere Lesen abspeichern. Gegenüber der Speicherung als normales Lesezeichen bietet die Reading List den Vorteil der einfacheren Verwaltbarkeit. Links können einzeln oder komplett gelöscht werden. Die Darstellung erfolgt mit dem Favicon der Website, der Überschrift und dem ersten Satz des Artikels. Hierbei handelt es sich allerdings nur um eine Link-Sammlung und nicht um eine Speicherung des gesamten Artikels.

IDC-Zahlen: RIM und Nokia brechen ein

Der weltweite Smartphone-Markt wuchs im ersten Quartal 2011 um insgesamt 80-Prozent gegenüber dem entsprechenden Vorjahres-Viertel. Apples Wachstum betrug 114-Prozent. Tic Tac Toe: Jailbreak unter iOS 4.3.3
Apple behebt auch mit iOS 4.3.3 nicht den aktuellen Jailbreak-(Userland-)Exploit. Damit ist die ungebundene Freischaltung mit 100-prozentigem Dateisystem-Zugriff, der seit iOS 4.3.1 existiert, auch unter der neusten iOS-Firmware möglich.

Canadian copyright group pushes for levy on memory cards
As even non-Canadians may recall, there was a big issue in the country a few years back over a so-called "iPod tax" (something that cropped up again in the recent election) and, while it still hasn't come to pass, the Canadian Private Copying Collective is now pushing for a music tax of another sort. While there's no iPods in danger of being taxed this time, the CPCC is asking for a new levy to be placed on memory cards (presumably all types, although that hasn't been specified). NEC spits out LaVie L and S Series laptops, ValueStar W and N Series all-in-ones
Like your computers Japanese and fire engine red? You might want to have a gander at the quartet of PCs NEC just churned out, including twin LaVie notebooks and ValueStar all-in-ones. The laptops both have 15.6-inch displays, optional Blu-ray drives, and hard drives as large as 750GB, but the L series packs a TV tuner and maxes out at a Core i7 processor, while the S series' top CPU option is a Core i5-2410M. On the desktop side, the W series has a 23-inch screen, Core i7 processor, a 2TB HDD, NVIDIA GeForce GT 425M card, a TV tuner, and a Blu-ray drive with an optional 3D display. Moving on down the line, the N Series offers a 20-inch screen, Core i5 processor, and integrated Intel graphics, though it, too, will be offered with a 3D panel. Battle For Normandy is a tactical game that attempts to recreate the land warfare in Western France during World War II. Corsair brings out extra-fast Force Series 3 SSDs
Corsair targeted the relative high end of storage upgrades Monday through its Force Series 3 solid-state drives. All of them 2.5-inch SSDs use a new SandForce SF-2281 controller that ramps up their speeds even compared to most usual SSDs. BMO: iPad 2 demand still strong, 32GB model most popular
iPad 2 demand remains "very strong," according to BMO Capital analyst Keith Bachman. He also adds that Apple's supplies have improved, except when it comes to "the most popular models." The leading model is reported to hold 32GB, although whether it's a Wi-Fi or a 3G tablet is unmentioned. Wi-Fi iPads have traditionally been the most popular however, as they're cheaper and 3G is less essential with tablets.

AT&T plans smartphone security service for 2012
AT&T's enterprise head John Stankey said in an interview Monday that the carrier was planning a service to help protect individual smartphones from malware attacks. The company already had a corporate plan but expected it would "probably" have a service for home users sometime in 2012. HP trots out Pavilion p7, Pavilion Slimline s5, and HPE h8 desktops
Lest you think the desktop is an endangered species, HP, at least, begs to differ. The company just unveiled three of 'em: the Pavilion p7, Slimline s5, and the Pavilion HPE h8 -- all festooned with black finishes, rounded edges, sliding port covers, and metallic panels designed to blend in with the electronics already populating your living room. Vanity Fair joins iTunes subscriptions, Wired still left out
Vanity Fair on Monday became Condé Nast's next magazine to enlist for iTunes subscriptions. Lodsys, the company threatening to sue some iOS developers over in-app purchases, has made a series of blog posts attempting to defend its actions. Regarding why it is targeting developers instead of Apple -- the company responsible for creating iOS' in-app purchase technology -- Lodsys downplays Apple's role. In-App-Verkauf laut Lodsys von Apple bereits lizenziert

iPad app Flipboard blocked in China
Flipboard CEO Mike McCue confirmed over the weekend that its popular Flipboard app for the iPad no longer works in China. The company is investigating the problem, but it seems that China is now blocking Flipboard servers from sending data to the Flipboard app. All services, including Facebook, Twitter and RSS, are no longer available to Chinese Flipboard users.
CEO McCue questions whether this is part of China's censorship policy or a way to promote Chinese businesses that clone Flipboard. He says,
"They (the clones) are complete replicas visually," begging the question, "Do the Chinese censor US services to protect their regime or to protect their market?"

We'd typically expect a defendant to remain mum with legal action pending, but in a bizarre twist, Lodsys has taken to its blog to defend its reputation -- or something. AIM, Google Talk integration starts working
AIM users have reported that an expected direct federation between AIM chats and Google Talk is now working properly. Any message from an AIM user can go through by messaging someone at their Gmail address, and Google Talk users can do the same by messaging someone's screen name with "@aol.com" attached. Messages not only skip any lag in the network hop but include typing notifications, and status updates show for contacts on both sides.

Piclings is an interesting one. It's a platformer, which means you guide a little character named Picazzo around a series of levels, picking up various coins and power-ups. It's cute enough, but the real draw is that Piclings lets you create your own levels by taking a picture with your iPhone's camera or using a picture you've already taken. You can use a level editor to design maps or let the app convert the image automatically, so even if you're not a great designer, any picture you've taken works.

Netflix scores key deal for Miramax movies in June
Netflix started off the week Monday by confirming its often rumored deal with Miramax. In wenigen Wochen könnte ein Jailbreak für das iPad 2 bereitstehen. Angekündigt wurde dieser von iDevice-Hacker p0sixninja, seines Zeichens Macher von greenpois0n, der die Information in einem Videointerview fallen ließ.

Bitkom: Deutsche versenden 2010 über 41 Milliarden SMS
Handynutzer in Deutschland haben vergangenes Jahr 41,3 Milliarden Kurznachrichten verschickt. Das entspricht einer Steigerung um gut 20 Prozent gegenüber 2009 und zum vierten Mal in Folge einem neuen Rekordwert. Statistisch gesehen hat jeder Einwohner über 500 SMS versendet. Wer abnehmen möchte muss zuerst schauen, ob er zuviel isst, was er isst und wo die Stellschrauben liegen, die korrigiert werden sollen. Als System mag ich Weight Watchers gerne, da hier viele komplizierte Werte auf einen einzelnen Wert heruntergebrochen werden können: Man darf X “Punkte” pro Tag essen und jedes Essen hat ebenfalls X “Punkte” - berechnet aus Kcal/60 und Fett/9. Das ist einfach und übersichtlich und hat zudem nichts mit einer Diät zu tun. Schnell fällt bei mir auf, dass z.B eine Scheibe Brot mit Käse schon bei fünf Punkten landet und in meine erlaubten 30 Punkte deutlich einschlägt. Wiegt man weniger, so hat man weniger Punkte zur Verfügung und ändert so langsam und dauerhaft sein Essverhalten.

Am Freitag hat Apple eine dritte Vorabversion der nächsten Mac-OS-X-Version «Lion» an registrierte Entwickler verteilt. Obwohl die Lion-Preview, wie alle Vorab-Software von Apple einem strickten NDA (Non-Disclosure Agreement; Geheimhaltungsvertrag) untersteht, finden sich im Internet wie immer unzählige Informationen über das System und dessen Neuerungen, welche wir nun hier zusammengetragen haben. PBS releases children's iPad app, interesting usage stats
Last week PBS released its free PBS KIDS Video for iPad app. The app features more than 1000 videos from over a dozen PBS KIDS and PBS KIDS GO! series, including Sesame Street, The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That, and Super WHY! The app itself was purposefully designed so young kids could easily navigate it. Videos can be watched anywhere with a Wi-Fi or 3G connection, and the app also features local PBS station TV schedules, a TV series' intended age and learning goals, and social network sharing.

Moneydance 2011 released, adds Quicken Essentials import
Moneydance 2011 final has been released, two months after their preview version in March, adding direct support for importing from Quicken Essentials for Mac, the latest version of the personal Quicken product from Intuit. The new version of Moneydance also expands multi-currency abilities, adds new report and graph types, and features a new automatic transaction categorization engine that intelligently classifies transactions by itself. Miraizon releases Cinematize 3 DVD ripper and converter
Cinematize has now been updated to version 3.0, sporting a host of new features to the DVD extractor and converter program to bring it in line with Cinematize 3 Pro. Latest Boxee Box update leaves surround sound speakers silent on stereo sources
