OmniFocus 1.3 for iPad updates Forecast Mode
Task management app OmniFocus for iPad has been updated to version 1.3, and the new version is gaining some rave reviews for all of its new features over on the official forums. Most notably, the new version updates the app's Forecast Mode, which streamlines all of your calendar events and tasks into an easy-to-read format. The update also allows you to expand notes to fullscreen while editing them, which should give a little more breathing room while doing that. You can also now use the app while screen mirroring from your iPad, and there are a few other bugfixes and updates as well.

Tucked into laptop and tablet concepts at SID 2011, this 10.1-inch 1024 x 600 wunderpanel could be the next innovation in durable mobile devices -- cutting thickness by as much as two-thirds at one-fifth the weight of a glass LCD. Lighter, stronger devices sound awesome, but the tech has its drawbacks; it suffers from poor off-axis viewing angles, and the entire surface has a visible, but not entirely off-putting, wavy texture.

Classic boardgame Ticket to Ride hits iPad
The classic boardgame Ticket to Ride has today been released for the iPad. Players collect and play matching train cards to claim railway routes connecting cities, with longer routes meaning more points. The iPad app uses the original game's artwork, and supports both AI opponents and multiplayer. Humans opponents can be using iPads, Macs or PCs.

With all the giant screens throwing around flashy 3D graphics at SID, the smaller offerings like this LG 4.3-inch transparent bistable LCD display can be easy to overlook. Lucky for you, our hawk-eyes combined with a love for tiny gadgets landed us -- and our video camera -- right in front of this bantam wonder. Sure, bistable displays (which can retain an image when powered down) are nothing new, but this 4.3-incher was just too eye-catching to pass up -- even if it was just running a simple stick-man animation. Samsung entices with elecrowetting displays at SID 2011: coming to consumers later this year?
Liquavista has teased us with the potential of its electrowetting displays for years, but we hadn't gotten to peep its panels post-acquisition until now, at SID 2011. UK copyright revamp would finally legalize disc ripping
A review into the UK's archaic copyright laws commissioned by the Prime Minister has now been completed and may bring about some significant changes. Chief among the proposed changes is the ability to legally rip DVDs, CDs and Blu-ray discs to a user's computer. This, and other changes, would help the UK become more competitive on an economic scale with countries such as the US, Professor Ian Hargreaves argued to Pocket-Lint.

Apple's BookExpo presence to be limited to meetings
Apple's participation at BookExpo America has been overstated, a spokesperson explains. The event's website cites Apple as an "exhibitor," and the company was initially reported as having a large booth next to Scholastic's. In truth Apple will be meeting with publishers in a private room at the Jacob Javits Center in New York City, the spokesperson clarifies.

Gates disagrees Microsoft was left behind in mobile
Microsoft co-creator Bill Gates in an interview with the BBC's Hard Talk [excerpts below] took issue with notions that Microsoft was trailing in the mobile space. He "wouldn't say that" the Windows developer had been left behind and said mostly that competitors, implicitly Apple and Google, had mainly done "very good work" in that area. The former CEO argued that Microsoft, while it hadn't executed on its vision, had even been prescient in believing that software would define the phone.

AppleCare rep tells Ed Bott Mac malware reports are up
An anonymous AppleCare support representative spoke to ZDNet's Ed Bott over the weekend, telling the reporter that complaints about malware infections on the Mac increased significantly in the first half of May. "This last week over 50% of our calls have been about [malware]," said the AppleCare staffer. "In two days last week I personally took 60 calls that referred to Mac Defender."

Apple prepares new Silicon Valley datacenter
Apple is in the process of establishing a new datacenter presence in Silicon Valley, industry sources say. Specifically the people claim that Apple has signed a seven-year lease with a third-party Santa Clara center run by DuPont Fabros Technology. The lease includes 2.28MW of critical power load, and is scheduled to begin in the third quarter after the center is opened. The lease has technically been public knowledge since DuPont Fabros' Q1 results call, but at the time the signer was identified only as a "Fortune 50 technology company with excellent credit."

More developers getting on the iPad publish-it-yourself bandwagon
As the iPad shapes up to become an impressive force in publishing, we're seeing more developers get interested in providing solutions for small businesses, schools and organizations that just want to get a magazine out with a minimum of fuss. HTC touts early Flyer sales, promises NFC-equipped phone within a year
It's still not dishing much in the way of specifics, but it looks like HTC is at least cautiously optimistic about the success of its Flyer tablet -- or, as the company's top exec in Europe, Florian Seiche, put it at a recent Reuters summit: "it's early days but we feel very good about it." Biometric face recognition for jailbroken iPhones with RecognizeMe
Have you ever wished your iPhone 4 would recognize your face and let you past the lock screen? RecognizeMe, a facial recognition lock screen tweak for the jailbroken iPhone 4, does just that.
Simply hit the RecognizeMe button on the lock screen and let the phone scan your face using the front facing camera. The app can be trained to recognize your ugly mug, while the threshold for a match is adjustable. If RecognizeMe confirms your identity, it'll unlock your iPhone. If a match isn't found, it'll prompt you to enter your password, so at least you can't be locked out of your phone if you haven't shaved this morning or (gasp!) this month.
There are drawbacks to RecognizeMe, however. One is that it takes time to scan your face -- long enough that it would have been quicker to enter in your PIN or password manually. S

Boxee Box patch fixes surround sound problems, brings back volume control
Good news for those left less than satisfied by their auditory experience after the recent Boxee Box 1.1 update, the company has completed work on a fix and released the v1.1.1 update earlier today. Owners of the box can now matrix stereo audio sources through their surround sound setup again and if you prefer volume control to be on, it's just a click of a settings checkbox away. Intel VP: Apple 'helps shape our roadmap'
Intel Senior VP Tom Kilroy commented on Wednesday that Apple was both directly and indirectly influencing the Intel chip roadmap. The two collaborated often, and Apple's consideration "helps shape our roadmap [at Intel]," he said at a Reuters summit. New OmniVision 5MP sensor may give iPad 3 its camera
OmniVision gave hope for a major improvement to the iPad and other thin tablets with a new camera sensor designed with them in mind. The OV5690 is its first five-megapixel camera using its second-generation backside-illuminated CMOS sensor and manages to get low light performance while measuring 20 percent thinner than the company's older sensor. Its camera would help with "slimmer tablets" along with smartphones, OmniVision said.

Microsoft notes how Office 365 will benefit Apple customers
Business people are increasingly accessing files stored in the "cloud," and Microsoft wants in on the action. A new suite of online tools called Office 365, still in beta, is meant to appeal to those users. A recent post on the Office 365 Blog describes how the service will benefit Apple customers.

Apple accused of violating patented Wi-Fi antenna designs
The latest in a seemingly endless stream of patent lawsuits against Apple and other computer manufacturers has been filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware. This time, the plaintiff is a company named Linex Technologies, which has filed suit against Apple, HP, and several other companies that manufacture Wi-Fi products. Linex also filed a complaint with the International Trade Commission, asking for a ban on imports of products which it believes infringe on patents held by the company.

Google in a statement Wednesday said it planned to remotely fix an Android authentication hole in the near future. A remote change to how apps authenticate themselves should deploy worldwide over the course of the "next few days." Apple appears to have imposed a limited freeze on the approval process for iOS apps with in-app purchases, developer anecdotes suggest. The iPhone 4 sales ranking in Japan
Even in cell-phone crazed Japan, the iPhone 4 is the top-selling handset according to a report from market research firm Gfk Japan. Data from the first quarter of 2011 shows the 16 GB and 32 GB models in first and second place, respectively. Rounding out the top three is the Android-powered Samsung Galaxy S. The iPhone is a Softbank exclusive and has been wildly popular since its debut last June. The Japanese wireless carrier posted record profits in this past quarter thanks to strong sales of both the iPhone 4 and the iPad.

Google confirms Android security issue, server-side fix rolling out today
No Android security flaw is good news for Google, but the recently discovered ClientLogin issue that left the OS vulnerable to impersonation attacks is surely at least a bit more welcome than some of the alternatives. That's because the flaw can be fixed at the server-side level (rather than on millions of Android phones), and Google has now confirmed that a fix is rolling out today, although it may take a few more days for it to cover all users (there's no action required on your part). The company's not quite out of the woods just yet, though -- while we've confirmed with Google that the fix address the issues with Calendar and Contacts, the problem with Picasa remains, and there's still no indication of a fix for it

XtremeMac has introduced its new InCharge Bluetooth (BT) series, featuring the Home BT and Auto BT chargers. HTC sees good early Flyer sales, tablets replacing textbooks
HTC's European leader Florian Seiche in a presentation at a Reuters summit on Wednesday was optimistic about the future of tablets both for his own company and the future. Das hätte auch schlimmer kommen können, denn Sonys PSN ist zwar nicht nochmal gehackt worden, aber was man wohl nur als ziemlich krasses Versäumnis bezeichnen kann, hat Sony dazu gebracht, die PSN Web-Logins schnell wieder abzuschalten. Samsung hat sein Monitor-Portfolio um ein flaches 23- und ein 27-Zoll-Modell mit integriertem TV-Tuner erweitert. Beide stellen auch 3D-Inhalte dar. BoxyTunes app streams music from your Dropbox music folder
There's a short but interesting analysis on Wired's Gadgetlab about Google's Music Beta service and how a simple US$2 app, BoxyTunes, does everything you hoped Google's service would do but doesn't.
Music Beta was launched last week at Google's I/O Developer conference. It currently only works in web browsers and on Android devices. The web-based service does not work on iOS devices because it uses Flash.
BoxyTunes, on the other hand, simply streams any music, podcasts or audiobooks it finds in your Dropbox

Some Xbox 360s won't read discs; Microsoft to comp owners with a new system, year of XBL
There may have been a good reason for that wide beta test Microsoft ran to test out its new disc format for the Xbox 360. While it will allow for an extra 1GB of storage space for new games and (it hopes) stop piracy, apparently some consoles contain drives that cannot read the new XGD3 discs. App Store approvals frozen on in-app purchase products?
We've now heard this from multiple developers, so it's clear that something's a bit out of whack in the App Store approval process for applications that use in-app purchasing.
As a matter of policy, Apple requires developers to test in-app purchases (IAP) with a test user account before the application in question can be approved. Unfortunately, this test account has been offline for a week now with no word as to why. If you are a developer, you can see the relevant thread on Apple's own developer forums here.
Could it be that approvals are being quietly suspended while Apple's lawyers investigate the Lodsys patent claim, which directly relates to in-app purchas

Senate bill requires warrants for messaging, phone tracking
A new bill in the US Senate would toughen the standards for government searches of cellphones and online data. Democrat Senator Patrick Leahy's ECPA Amendments Act would require that the government get a court warrant either to track a cellphone's location or to get copies of virtually any digital messaging, including e-mail, instant messaging, or social network conversations. Extra safeguards would also be in place to protect the data stored both by carriers and on the devices themselves, including smartphones.

A new lawsuit is accusing Apple, HP and several other companies of violating patents related to Wi-Fi antennas. Filed by Linex Technologies, the case specifically targets the defendants for breaking US patents 6,757,322 and RE 42,219, titled Space diversity and coding, spectrum antenna and method and Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) spread spectrum system and method, respectively. Samsung Omnia 7 patch promises brick-free WP7 updates
That latest WP7 update, the post-NoDo tweak dubbed 7392, has apparently been giving some Samsung handsets fits. PSN logins exploited again, Sony takes pages offline

Final Fantasy Tactics supposedly coming to iOS this summer
It's been nearly a year since Square Enix announced at E3 that it would port the venerable Final Fantasy Tactics to iOS. The original release date was supposedly September 15 last year, but Square Enix later backtracked on that and claimed "the wrong information about the FFT release date is spreading around somehow" -- the chief source of that information being Square Enix itself. The company initially didn't offer a time frame for release, then said "Spring 2011," which is now almost over with still no release.

Analyst estimates 250,000 BlackBerry PlayBooks sold so far
RIM may have had surprising success for the BlackBerry PlayBook based on a investor note from RBC analyst Mike Abramsky on Wednesday. Adonit Writer: Taking iPad keyboard cases to a higher level
When I'm working at a desk or a table, I can type fairly well with the iPad's virtual keyboard. If I really want to write extensively, I can use the Apple Wireless Keyboard. However, it's difficult to use either solution to write anything longer than an email when I'm sitting with the iPad on my lap. Plus, carrying the Wireless Keyboard around kind of defeats the portability of the iPad.

AppleInsider is reporting that Apple will begin its annual back-to-school promotions next week. The promotions typically run from late May/early June to the first week in September. Shoppers can probably expect a free or discounted iPod touch when a Mac is purchased, as that is usually what Apple has offered in years past.

Sure, we've seen oodles of light pen drawing boards, and e-readers that support doodling, but Toshiba's "R&D project" at SID Display Week just struck us. Weighing far less than the notepad used to jot down notes about it, this encapsulated device evidently sports a built-in battery, E Ink tendencies, a microSD card slot, proprietary charging port, an on / off toggle switch and support for stylus input. Qualcomm blamed for no LTE on iPhone 4S, current stock thins
Insiders claimed Wednesday that the absence of LTE on the next iPhone, widely thought of now as the iPhone 4S, was owed to one manufacturer. Überarbeitete MacBook-Air-Modelle stehen offenbar kurz vor der Veröffentlichung. Wie die DigiTimes mit Berufung auf Apples Zulieferer berichtet, erhält Apples ultraportables Mac-Notebook voraussichtlich im Juni oder Juli die nächste Überarbeitung. Die Serienproduktion soll bereits Ende Mai anlaufen, wobei Apple angeblich von sehr hohen Stückzahlen ausgeht. Seit Apple das MacBook Air im vergangenen Herbst massiv überarbeitet hat (zum macprime-Review des aktuellen MacBook Air), sind die Verkaufszahlen massiv in die Höhe geschossen. We got the lowdown on Toshiba's latest four-inch LCD a couple of days ago, and today at SID 2011 we got up close and personal with the pixel-packed display. It's one thing to read about a 367ppi screen that shows native 720p video, and it's quite another to experience it in person. Enterprise-Geschäft beschert Dell Gewinnsprung von 177 Prozent
Dell hat im ersten Quartal des Geschäftsjahrs 2012 (bis 29. April) seinen GAAP-Nettogewinn gegenüber dem Vorjahresquartal um 177 Prozent auf 945 Millionen Dollar (666 Millionen Euro) gesteigert. Laut Vodafone-Neuseeland sind daran Langfinger schuld, die sich die Xperia Play-Lieferung unter den Nagel gerissen haben. Börsengang: LinkedIn erhöht Ausgabepreis auf 42 bis 45 Dollar je Aktie
LinkedIn hat den Preis für die 7,84 Millionen Aktien, die es bei seinem geplanten Börsengang ausgeben will, auf 42 bis 45 Dollar pro Stück erhöht. Apple files for trademark on 'Noteworthy' font
Apple has registered a "blind" trademark filing, asserting ownership of the term "Noteworthy" with the European Trademark Office based on a Jamaican application filed in November 2010, Patently Apple reports. The class descriptions associated with the filing leave few clues as to its nature, but interestingly one of the classes is reserved for "printer's type; printing blocks; printing fonts; typefaces," making it likely that it relates to the new, original "Noteworthy" font used in very recent iterations of the Notes app on newer iOS devices.

Digitimes: LTE iPhone in 2012, Apple lowering iPhone 4 orders
Digitimes reports that Apple has lowered its iPhone 4 shipment volume for calendar Q2 2011 in anticipation of slower sales as the company prepares to unveil a new iPhone in September. Digitimes says supply chain makers have confirmed Apple has lowered iPhone 4 shipments from 20 million units down to 17.5-18 million units. Of those, 16 million units will be the GSM version, while 1.5-2 million units will be the CDMA version.

Apple hat in der Nacht auf heute zwei Updates freigegeben: «ProKit-Update 7.0» und «Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 3.7» sind ab sofort via Softwareaktualisierung in Mac OS X oder via Apple.com verfügbar. Letzteres befähigt Mac OS X im Umgang mit RAW-Dateien der Kameramodelle Fujifilm FinePix X100, Nikon D5100, Olympus E-PL2, Olympus XZ-1 und Samsung GX-1S. Das Camera-RAW-Update ist insbesondere für Benutzer dieser Kameras, Aperture und/oder iPhoto ‘11 empfohlen, ist knapp 7 MB gross und benötigt mindestens Mac OS X 10.5.8 oder Mac OS X 10.6.6.

Study: Businesses love iPads, but don't know why exactly
Apple's iPad has had remarkable success in the corporate world, but a new survey has shown that adoption of the tablet has been driven by demand from the bottom-up rather than the top-down, leaving many companies unable to articulate a strategy for using them, CNet reports. Dimensional Research did a survey of 448 businesses, and found that half could not clearly explain what they plan to do with them. Nonetheless, the survey showed that the iPad is the overwhelming choice of businesses, even in the face of current and forthcoming more business-oriented tablets.

Found Footage: Rage for iOS running in WebGL
The video on the next page shows a pretty mean feat of coding. Developer Brandon Jones has taken files from the iOS version of id's Rage game, which came out for iOS a little while ago, and tweaked them to display in WebGL, a library for Javascript that can generate 3D graphics in a compatible web browser. In other words, Jones ported (some elements of) Rage for iOS to the browser.
He even had John Carmack's help, getting a few hints on exactly how the file format worked and how to get it together. Understandably, Carmack also asked him not to post the art files on a public webserver, so though the source code is available for developers, unfortunately the demo isn't actually live for players to try out.

Sprint network is down, no SMS and voice calls for some of you
Uh oh, according to the handful of tips we've received, it appears that Sprint is currently having some technical problems on its cellular network nationwide. Specifically, customers aren't having much luck with sending text messages, while some are also not able to make voice calls. But don't worry, the carrier's certainly aware of this issue and is already working on a fix, so hang tight and let your fingers take a break -- we'll let you know when things are up and running again.

Sony NEX-C3, Alpha A35 rumored for June 3
Sony is reportedly set to introduce a range of new photography gear early next month, including the NEX-C3 and Alpha A35 cameras, a 30mm macro lens, and a NEX flash. Leaked information posted on Photo Rumors suggests the A35 DSLR will integrate a 16-megapixel CMOS sensor, with an ISO range up to 12800, while a new tele-zoom high speed shooting mode offers continuous autofocus. LunaTik and TikTok iPod Nano wristbands to hit Apple Stores
What began as a Kickstarter community project to design a top-quality watchband for the current-generation iPod Nano -- an idea that has spawned countless imitators -- has arrived in the big time, with the LunaTik and TikTok designs now becoming available at Apple Stores across North America, GigaOM reports. Designer Scott Wilson unintentionally set a record on Kickstarter when enthusiastic backers in 50 countries contributed almost $1 million in crowd-sourced funding, a record for the service and more than $945,000 over his original goal.

iPads were everywhere at Musikmesse 2011
If there's any one area of life that the iPad has had a huge impact on, it's the creation of music. Writing for The Mac Observer, blogger Jochen Wolters noted that iPads were everywhere at the world's largest trade show for musical instruments and audio recording technology -- Musikmesse 2011.
This year's show was held April 6 - 9 in Frankfurt, Germany. Wolters noted that almost every developer of audio software and manufacturer of keyboards and mixers was demonstrating some way of using an iPad to perform or produce music. iPhone and iPad win Display of the Year honors
Those of us who use the iPhone 4 and iPad know how amazing the displays on the devices are. The iPhone 4, with its Retina Display, never ceases to impress those who are familiar with less capable smartphone screens, and the iPad's touchscreen has revolutionized computing.
Now the Society for Information Display has joined the chorus of people praising the displays on the two devices. On May 16 at SID Display Week 2011 in Los Angeles, the group presented Apple with the Display of the Year Gold Award for the Retina Display and the Display Application of the Year Gold Award for the iPad.

Apple updates RAW compatibility, pro apps
Apple today updated both their digital camera RAW compatibility for Leopard and Snow Leopard, as well as ProKit, the general updater for the company's "pro-class" software. ProKit has now been updated to version 7.0 for Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later, and makes improvements along with fixing leaks and issues, including a bug in AppKit itself. The Digital RAW Compatibility Update is numbered as v3.7, and adds support for five new digital cameras to Aperture 3 and iPhoto '11.

FCC, FTC ask Apple, Google to visit forum on mobile location
Both the FCC and the FTC planned Tuesday to invite Apple and Google to a public forum on location-based privacy. The iPhone and Android creators were being asked to explain how their systems work at a non-binding June 28 gathering. Advocacy groups, carriers, and other tech firms were also expected to show.

Hex watch bands for iPod nano on pre-order now
Now that's a good looking nano watch. We've covered a few iPod nano watch bands before, but to me, they've always seemed kind of cheap and hinky, more hacks than things that you'd actually wear out and about. But I really like this new band from Hex Vision -- it's a stainless steel band with a solid clasp that hooks right up to your iPod nano with what the company calls a "Clip-in, clip-out system." It's a little pricey at $69.95, but considering what you'd pay for a watch that looked like this and did everything the iPod nano does, that's not too bad.

iPhone 4 study shows same noise cancellation as Nexus One
A follow-up teardown at iFixit has revealed that the iPhone 4's noise cancellation is the same as in the Nexus One. Previously unidentifiable, a mystery chip on both has been given a close look in a ChipWorks scan and is now known to be an Audience A1026 audio signal processor. Both the Apple and Google phones are well-known for their near-ideal ability to filter out background noise and are now know to have accomplished that by using the same hardware.

Apple working on improved media streaming engines
A job posting posted on Tuesday to Apple's website has revealed that the company is working on improvements to their streaming technologies, one of the main features in QuickTime and Core Animation and also used in a number of other products, including iTunes, Apple TV, Safari and others, AppleInsider reports. The position calls for a "Media Streaming Engineering Manager" who will "help develop our media streaming engine for our iOS, Mac OS X and Windows products."

Apple "actively investigating" Lodsys patent infringement claims
The Guardian reported that Apple is "actively investigating" the Lodsys patent infringement claims. Beginning on May 13, several iOS developers began reporting that they had been served with patent infringement notices regarding their use of upgrade buttons and in-app purchases in their apps. The company behind the patent infringement claims turned out to be Lodsys, a patent holding company based in Texas.

Dell gets record profit but sees home PC sales drop
Dell on Tuesday posted results for the winter that at once set a record but also cast doubt on its home PC business. Its net profit nearly tripled year-over-year to $945 million leaning mostly on its enterprise and small business sales, whose operating profits were up 11.3 percent and seven percent each. Revenue in its consumer business, however, was down by seven percent as interest was "softer than expected," the Texas system builder said.
