Intel posts a short film about SSDs and the folly of not using them
Intel cares about you. It cares that your data is safe and secure in a sturdy storage silo of the solid state variety. In order to enlighten you on the dangers that old and dusty magnetic hard drives pose, it has kindly fashioned out a short film detailing graphically the fate of your 1s and 0s when they're kept on an HDD that suffers an unexpected impact. Time Warner to pull Fox from iPad app, Cablevision app near
Time Warner Cable partly bowed to pressure on Thursday and said it would pull channels like Fox from its TWCable TV iPad app. It spun the withdrawal by saying it would concentrate on "enlightened programmers" who saw the value of tablet streaming. The decision also gave it incentive to attack Fox, Scripps, and other holdouts, ironically accusing them of greed by limiting how they could access TV.

eBay reveals iPad 2 sales numbers

While we'll need to wait until the April 20th Q2 2011 Apple earnings call to get the official figures on exactly how many iPads and iPad 2s have been sold, CNET has published some stats from online auction house eBay on how many of the new iPads have changed hands through their service. If eBay's numbers are any indication, Apple shareholders will have a lot to smile about.

Analyst: Thunderbolt has slight sales edge over VZ iPhone
Sales of the HTC Thunderbolt was outselling the iPhone at Verizon by a slight margin, BTIG analyst Walter Piecyk said Thursday [free reg. required]. After checking anecdotally with 150 Verizon stores, he found that 61 percent claimed to have sold just as many of both phones in the past week. The Thunderbolt was more popular when an imbalance came; 28 percent of all stores said the 4G Android phone was more popular, while 11 percent said Apple was stronger at their shops.

Native Instruments rolls out Traktor 2, Maschine 1.6 update
There isn't any hardware that will make you a better (or hell, a good) DJ, although we always seem to forget this whenever we see one of Native Instruments' invariably mind-blowing product demos. If you're a DMC-level DJ, it certainly looks like the newly available Traktor 2 will suit all of your needs nicely. If you're not? Mac OS X Lion's Scene Kit API to enhance use of 3D
Mac OS X Lion -- currently in its second preview release -- is indeed implementing a new API framework called Scene Kit, a developer tells AppleInsider. Occasionally rumored, the framework should assist importing, manipulating and rendering 3D content, reducing some of the burden on app creators. The technology is described as "consistent" with Apple's other graphical systems, namely Image Kit and Core Animation, while not requiring in-depth knowledge of 3D programming.

Boxcar Beta for Mac available, brings notifications to Mac
Today brings a delightful surprise for Mac users with Boxcar joining the Mac family. DirecTV, Comcast, Vudu could start offering 'premium VOD' $30 movie rentals in April
Despite the questionable appeal of watching movies two months after they come out in theaters for $30 a pop, The Hollywood Reporter reports Warner Bros., Sony, Fox and Universal are going ahead with their premium video on-demand scheme. PlayStation One games appear in Android Market, predictably restricted to Xperia Play

ABI: Android to get 45% share by 2016, Windows Phone just 7%
ABI Research in a long-term prediction gave Android the top spot in market share in the future but came to very different conclusions about other platforms than a rival IDC study. Google would get 45 percent share by 2016, but Microsoft would have to get "incredible success" with its Nokia deal to get more than seven percent share for Windows Phone 7, ABI said. The platform's growth would be slow enough that it would be overtaken by Samsung Bada, an essentially Samsung-only OS intended for low- to mid-range phones, with 10 percent.

Vimeo for iPhone doesn't disappoint
Vimeo released an official iPhone app yesterday, and it does not disappoint. As a 1.0 release, it's impressive. Consider it a one-stop shop for watching, recording, editing and delivering video to Vimeo. There are a few bumps in the road, but all-in-all Vimeo for iPhone is a solid offering. Mozy app puts backed-up files at your fingertips
Here's another product for World Backup Day. Mozy, a well-respected and veteran cloud backup solution for Mac and PC, has delivered Mozy to the App Store. This app, which is a free download that works with any iOS device, gives you access to all of those files from your computer that have been backed up to Mozy's servers.
If you're a subscriber to Mozy's service, you can view files from any of the computers backed up to your account. The app tells you when the last backup was completed, and navigating to the individual folders is a matter of a few taps.

BlackBerry Touch gets hands-on, drops cursed Storm name
RIM's BlackBerry Storm3 has turned up in controlled conditions through a leak and simultaneous hands-on. The phone, also known by its Monaco (CDMA) and Monza (GSM) handles, will now drop the Storm name entirely and may just go as the BlackBerry Touch. The design is "thinner, faster and sexier," than most BlackBerry phones, BGR said, and would drop the often disliked SureType screen, in part to get the multi-touch needed for BlackBerry 6.1.

Boxcar notification app comes to Macs
App Remix has released the first Mac version of Boxcar, its signature notification utility. The iOS version serves notifications for a variety of platforms, ranging from Twitter, Facebook, e-mail and RSS feeds through to things like Github and Google Voice. Whereas the iOS app is dependent on Apple's push notification system however, the Mac client sits in the Menu Bar and triggers sounds and/or Growl notifications.

Before we all get in a huff about this, Google has been very eager to point out that the facial recognition app it's developing will work on a strictly opt-in basis. Zite draws the ire of publishers
I liked Zite when I reported on it earlier this month. In fact, I use it every day as a great news and information discovery app on my iPad. The app is free, and for now, still in the App Store with very strong user ratings.
There's no love, however, from publishers that claim Zite infringes copyright. A group including Time Inc, Dow Jones, The Washington Post, The Associated Press and others have sent Zite a cease and desist letter claiming that intellectual property is being misappropriated, and the publishers have asked Zite to "immediately stop doing so." Twitter updates iPhone app to drop controversial Quick Bar
Twitter reacted to pressure and said it would drop the controversial Quick Bar from the official Twitter iOS app (free, App Store) later on Thursday. The company said it decided the bar wasn't 'improving the user experience.' It was still convinced there were advantages to the bar, which showed trending hashtags, and said there were "incredibly high usage metrics" as proof. Twitter didn't give numbers.

Google preps mobile app with face recognition
Google is developing a mobile app that would recognize faces for the sake of profiles, the company's image recognition directo Harmut Neven said in an interview. The app, possibly a variant on Google Goggles, would link a person's to a Google profile. Neven's approach as described to CNN would give users quick access to contact information, much like a personal business card, and could also show photos from Facebook, Flickr, Picasa, and other sites attached to an account.

Whitehall efficiency head calls for switch from MS to Apple
Ian Watmore -- permanent secretary of the UK's Cabinet Office, and in charge of a government efficiency drive -- is calling for the UK government to end its dependence on Microsoft products, according to the BBC. Microsoft products are currently used by about 90 percent of civil servants in the UK. The government is committed to using more open-source software to save money, says Watmore, although this is being balanced with attention to the threat of hacking.

Die Bundesnetzagentur hat ihren jüngsten Entgeltvorschlag für die Teilnehmeranschlussleitung (TAL), die sogenannte letzte Meile, vorgelegt. Patent troll sues Apple, Motorola over phone camera tech
Previously unknown firm Imperium Holdings late Wednesday joined in the bevy of lawsuits targeting phone makers. The company sued Apple, Kyocera, LG, Motorola, Nokia, RIM, and Sony Ericsson for allegedly infringing on five patents from between 2001 and 2006. All of the patents focused on mobile camera imaging technology, including low-light CMOS sensors, flicker reduction to compensate for fluorescent light, and pixel correction.

Apple marketing VP Allison Johnson leaving the company
One of the brains behind Apple's ad campaigns, Allison Johnson, is leaving the company to start a new marketing firm with a former Facebook PR executive.
According to John Paczkowski at AllThingsD, Johnson reported directly to Steve Jobs and managed Apple's ad campaigns, which were of course created by TBWA\Chiat\Day. Johnson was at Apple for 6 years and was at HP before that.

Vestas unveils massive 7-megawatt offshore wind turbine (video)
Building and putting any sort of offshore wind turbine into place is a fairly impressive bit of engineering, but Denmark's Vestas is truly going the extra mile with its new V164-7.0 MW turbine. Not only does it promise to provide seven megawatts of power but, as you can see above, each of the blades are longer than nine doubler-decker buses, which gives the turbine itself a larger total diameter than the London Eye. Of course, the company also hopes that there will eventually be not just a few of these but massive farms of the turbines at sea (the North Sea, specifically), although that won't exactly happen overnight -- Vestas only expects to have the first prototypes ready by the end of 2012, wit

Foxconn takes surprising $218.3m loss
Foxconn International Holdings, a unit of the Foxconn Technology Group that builds numerous electronics devices, including Apple's iPad, has posted a much larger net loss, at $218.3 million, for 2010 than analysts predicted. Wir versuchen mal alle Apple News des Tages in ein Post zu packen. Skurril aber wahr, in den USA gibt es selbst jetzt noch Schlangen in vielen Apple Stores. Vor manchen stehen die Leute schon ab 4 Uhr morgens Schlange, weil die Stores jeden Tag nur ein paar neue iPads bekommen. Mittlerweile haben die Zulieferer die Produktion hochgefahren und Samsung stellt 300 neue Leute an. Analysten sprechen jetzt von 30 Millionen verkauften iPads für das Jahr 2011. eBay data shows early iPad 2 auctions concentrated in US
Just about 12,000 iPad 2s were auctioned on eBay in the span between the tablet's March 11th US launch and an international launch on March 25th, according to data published by the website. Particularly significant is that about 65 percent of units sold -- almost 8,000 -- went to buyers in the US. The ratio is well above that of 35 percent for the iPad 1 in 2010.

Apple reportedly to absorb costs from Japan tragedies
As Japan's people and industries respond to the recent horrible disasters, routine electrical brownouts are being rolled out to conserve available resources. Manufacturing is being affected as a result, and the tech industry is not immune.
DigiTimes reports that Apple will absorb the extra cost of timely production, ensuring both smooth shipments and profitability for upstream suppliers, at least in the short term.

AUO rumored making 30 million iPad 2 displays
A rumor on Monday claimed that AU Optronics had won a major deal to supply screens for the iPad 2. Google pushes 'non-fragmentation' on Android, hits Verizon
Google's attempts to tighten control of Android got significantly more detail Monday with leaks from executives at its partners. The company has reportedly been putting tougher conditions on the "non-fragmentation clauses" it has to limit what OEMs can do to change the OS. Facebook, which is reportedly still working on its own version of Android despite denials, was reportedly upset that its arch-rival Google had to oversee its code, Bloomberg said.

Apple, Nokia, RIM among 32 companies sued over IP telephony
A firm called H-W Technology has filed a patent infringement lawsuit against 32 different high-tech companies, reports say. Targeted corporations include the likes of Apple, Amazon, Google, Microsoft, Motorola, Nokia and RIM. H-W's complaint specifically revolves around a single patent awarded in April 2009, dubbed Internet Protocol Phone with Search and Advertising Capability.

Boxee to add iPad support, more in May
Boxee confirmed on its blog that its next update will add support for the Apple iPad. The streaming content provider will release the Boxee for iPad app that will let you stream content from your Boxee Box to your Apple iPad over a wireless connection. This feature would be ideal for some late night Boxee watching from your bed or some entertainment while you log miles on your treadmill.

MS touts 11.5k WP7 apps, trashes Android, iOS, PlayBook
Microsoft marked the one-year anniversary of Windows Phone 7 development details with an attack on Android, iOS, and RIM's BlackBerry PlayBook. When Apple introduced its new subscription terms earlier this year, Popular Science embraced this change and introduced subscription-based billing into its iPad-based magazine. Now that six weeks have elapsed, publisher Bonnier Technology Group is happy to report that Pop Sci now has 10,000 iPad subscribers. Korea's SK Telecom mulls bid for Blockbuster
Korean cell carrier SK Telecom said Thursday that it was contemplating making a bid for the struggling video chain Blockbuster. An official didn't explain the motivations, but it's suspected the deal would be an attempt to diversify away from its Korea-only network, where it leads but has a tough fight with KT and LG Telecom. Daewoo Securities analyst Byun Sung-jae told the WSJ that SK Telecom might feel oversaturated but could thrive in Internet video, where Blockbuster's content rights would be advantages.

Foxconn reports $218 million full-year net loss, exceeding analysts' expectation
Foxconn, a workforce of about 127,000 people behind many popular gadgets, posted a $218.3 million net loss for 2010 yesterday. UK's first fuel cell-powered black cab hits the streets of London
It may not look much different than your average black cab on the outside (decals aside), but it's quite a different story under the hood of this taxi, which has just been deemed road legal in the UK. Developed by Intelligent Energy, the cab actually includes both a fuel cell with a 30 kW net output and a 14 kWh lithium polymer battery pack, which combined promise to provide enough juice for a full day of operation -- along with a top speed of 81 MPH and acceleration from zero to sixty in fourteen seconds. Londoners won't be seeing them everywhere just yet, however, as the company only expects the first fleet to be ready sometime next year in time for the 2012 Olympics.

Selbst die eigenen Richtlinien zum Schutz der Privatsspähre der Nutzer wurden ursprünglich verletzt, es hagelte Prozesse und Klagen. Nach einer Zahlung von 8,5 Millionen Dollar für soziale Projekte, wollte man das Teil einfach nur noch vergessen, die Nachwehen sind aber immer noch zu spüen. Gartner: Markt für Media-Tablets wächst 2011 auf 29,4 Milliarden Dollar
Die Ausgaben für Media-Tablets wie Apples iPad sollen in diesem Jahr auf 29,4 Milliarden Dollar (20,9 Milliarden Euro) ansteigen. 2010 hatte der Markt laut den neuesten Zahlen des Marktforschungsunternehmens Gartner ein Volumen von 9,6 Milliarden Dollar. Nach 138 Tagen öffnet nach dem Apple Store in Oberhausen nun auch der Store in Dresden. Somit haben wir ab heute 5 Stores in Deutschland. Apple veröffentlicht zweite Mac OS X Lion Beta
Apple hat in der Nacht auf heute eine zweite Developer Preview des kommenden Mac OS X Lion veröffentlicht. Der neue Build trägt die Nummer 11A419 und kann von registrierten Entwicklern via Software-Update als «Mac OS X Lion Developer Preview Update 1» oder als neues System im Dev-Center als «Mac OS X Lion Developer Preview 2» geladen werden. Auch eine «Xcode 4.1 Developer Preview 2» steht ab sofort zum testen bereit. Apple has allegedly agreed to absorb any inflation in component costs due to the earthquake and tsunami in Japan, suppliers have told DigiTimes. Google may be pushing for much more consistency not just in Android 3.0 but also in the ARM processors that power it, notebook makers claimed late Wednesday. Fox asks Time Warner to pull channels from iPad TV app
Fox on Wednesday said it had given a cease-and-desist letter to Time Warner Cable asking it to pull Fox channels from the TWCable TV iPad app. The studio believed Time Warner didn't have rights to stream its shows on Apple's tablet, even over the app's home Wi-Fi limitation. Fox asks Time Warner to stop streaming its channels to customers iPads
While we'd heard many networks were unhappy with Time Warner's decision to release its live TV streaming iPad app and there have even been whispers of cease-and-desist letters in the offing, Fox has put a request to have its channels excluded in writing. At issue is whether or not their agreement allows Time Warner to provide the channel on devices other than the TV -- while TWC is confident it does since it only works within the customer's home, the networks would apparently like to renegotiate before conceding anything. AT&T CEO promises improved service from T-Mobile deal
BusinessWeek had a chat recently with AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson, and he told them that the pending merger with T-Mobile would have the intended effect of improving service and capacity on the networks for all of AT&T's devices, including, of course, the iPhone. "Virtually on the day you close the deal, getting a 30 percent lift in capacity in New York City: that's a significant improvement in call quality and data throughput," he said. AT&T expects to give up some cell sites in T-Mobile deal
AT&T's CEO Randall Stephenson said in an interview Wednesday that he expected to shed some cell sites if the buyout of T-Mobile is successful. There would be some markets the carrier "will have to divest," he predicted, although he wasn't willing to guess with the WSJ as to which ones these might be. Mac OS X 10.6.7 supplemental update for 13" MacBook Air
Apple has released a "supplemental update" to OS X version 10.6.7 specifically for the 13" MacBook Air model released late last year. The update reportedly fixes an issue that made the devices "unresponsive when using iTunes," and clocks in at a tiny 461 KB.
As always, the updates are available via Software Update, so if you've got a newish MacBook Air, load up the app and check to see if you need to install it. Afterwards, you'll be able to use iTunes without issue among other fixes.

Researchers show off 'flex' interface for touchscreens
No, it's not an actual flexible touchscreen, but this so-called "flex" interface developed by some researchers at Osaka University is still pretty novel. Rather than simply moving content off the screen when you're browsing something like Google Maps, it treats what's on the screen as an elastic, flexible material and squishes the content as it gets closer to the edge of the screen, which still lets you see it while you focus on a different area. Microsoft hires linguist in 'App Store' dispute with Apple
CNET reports that in its fight to keep Apple from trademarking the name "App Store" for its own mobile marketplace, Microsoft has hired a linguist to testify that the phrase "app store" simply means a store that sells apps, and therefore should not be used by Apple to talk about its own platform.
