comScore: Android now 33% of US smartphones, iPhone still up
Android is continuing its rise upwards but has yet to take any share away from the iPhone, comScore found on Friday. February, the first month of the Verizon iPhone's availability, saw Android climb up to exactly 33 percent of the US smartphone field, a seven point climb from November. Apple's platform still managed to climb very slightly to 25.2 percent.

Caption Contest: Russian prez is impressed by iPad 2
In non-Soviet Russia presidents tend to receive some pretty swanky high-tech gifts. Dmitry Medvedev, leader of the good people of Russia and one of the few men to successfully rock denims with a suit jacket, has been bestowed with a fresh new iPad 2 and his facial expression seems to suggest he was immediately irradiated with blasts of magic, fairy dust, and the smiles of innocent children from across the world. We just hope he hasn't seen the crummy camera yet, he is something of a tablet photography connoisseur.

Traveling in circles: the Navigon way
Our beloved leader Victor has an entire comedy routine worked out about GPS apps. In his "Maps powered by Match.com" schtick, he jokes "I took a detourand 10 years later we were married." In real life, iPhone nav apps can be just as funny as his stand-up.
Take yesterday. I was driving my daughter to an appointment across town, when Navigon started directing us in circles. Now, we are no stranger to Navigon oddities. I can't tell you the number of times that the app has had us turn off a perfectly straight road, and maneuver right, then left, then left, then right back to the same road we started on.
It's a Navigon thing.

Nachdem bereits am ersten Tag des iPad 2's die WiFi-Variante auseinander genommen wurde, stellte iFixit heute die Gallieren für das 3G- und CDMA-iPad online. Anstatt auf jedes Detail einzugehen wurden nur die Unterschiede zur WiFi-Variante hervorgehoben. Der größte Unterschied zwischen den beiden 3G-Modellen ist, dass das CDMA-Modell keinen micro-SIM-Slot besitzt. Tesla Roadster 2.5 Sport review
Gadgets come in all shapes and sizes, but it's safe to say this is a big'un. Sure, it isn't exactly portable in the traditional sense, and no 24 month contract is going to make it fit into our budget, but that doesn't mean it can't have a place in your life. It's the Roadster Sport, the latest addition to the Tesla family and released to the world last summer. Version 2.5 is the fastest yet on the road, leaping from zero to 60 in 3.7 seconds yet still getting a rated 245 miles of range.

Today's refurbished deals from Apple's online store include Mac minis starting at only $599 for the 2.4GHz Mini originally released June of 2010 with 2GB of RAM and a 320GB hard drive. GameStop snaps up Spawn Labs, Impulse game distribution platform
We wouldn't count on its retail business going away anytime soon, but it looks like GameStop is now also betting heavily on a digitally-distributed future. To that end, the company has just announced that it's acquiring both Spawn Labs and Steam-competitor Impulse, the latter of which it's buying out from parent company Stardock Systems. If it wasn't apparent already, today is April Fools' day and Apple's 35th birthday. To celebrate this occasion, Network World has compiled a list of popular Apple-themed April Fools' jokes from the past. Some are from Apple employees and some from the news media, but almost all of them are entertaining.
The most famous joke involves Clarus the Dogcow. Created by Susan Kare, designer of the happy-faced Mac computer icon, the black and white dog-slash-bovine became an integral part of the Page Setup dialog box in early versions of Mac OS.

FCC's Copps, House committe head object to T-Mobile sell-off
Two key US officials voiced opposition to the AT&T buyout of T-Mobile on Friday. FCC Commissioner Michael Copps in an interview said it would be an "even steeper climb" than the Comcast-NBC deal since it would hand 80 percent of wireless spectrum to one company, he estimated to Politico. He was concerned that there might not be much "residue of competition" left if the merger was approved.

rudimentäre Bildmodifikationen, man kann Filter einstellen, Farben korrigieren oder einfach nur ein Bild beschneiden. Per In-App-Purchase sind weitere Filter erhältlich.
Nicht integriert sind Ebenen - Bereits in Adobe Ideas implementiert, finden sie nun wohl auch ihren Weg in Photoshop Express. Man kann Ebenen im nächsten Update erwarten, welches in einigen Tagen im App Store erscheinen sollte. Leisuresonic has launched SynthTronica, a spectral synthesizer with a multi-touch filter. The app features 92 sound presets, including vocoder effects, and lets users create their own effects while offering import and export support. The filter component incorporates 11 different options. Spiral training Android application turns anyone into Peyton Manning... in theory (video)
Ah, ingenuity. We've seen Google's Android platform used for a host of unorthodox applications over the years, but David Almoslino's concoction deserves a round of golf claps to call its own. The so-called Replay Football system employs a Bluetooth-enabled Nerf football with a 9-axis inertial sensing motion processing module (MPU-6000 by InvenSense), and when linked to a visualization / throw analysis application, you're able to analyze the rotation of a football in real-time as it's thrown. Apple and Intel embargo on blood minerals take effect
The rules Apple and Intel came up with to stop the profits from the sales of minerals used in electronics from funding war have gone into effect on Friday, BusinessWeek reported. Exporters said miners in Central Africa will now focus on finding new buyers in Asia. China is the most likely market, as its demand for copper is expected to grow an average of seven percent per year between 2010 and 2014. China has recently moved its investments in mine from Australia and Canada to Africa.

Good news for Australians: Apple drops iPod prices
Apple often charges more for products sold outside of the US, but with the Australian dollar coming into near parity with the value of the US dollar (currently less than a four cent differential), the company has reduced Australian prices of the entire iPod line.
The 160 GB iPod classic was reduced A$ 30 from $329 to $299.
The 8 GB iPod touch was cut $30 from $289 to $259 and the 32 GB version was lowered $29 bringing it from $378 to $349. The 64 GB model was slashed a full $50 taking it from $499 to $449 which is the largest price decrease in the line. The smallest price decrease was only $4 lowering the iPod shuffle from $69 to $64.

Rogers puts Sony Ericsson Xperia Play and Arc up for pre-order
Well, it's not yet confirming the "late April" launch date that leaked out yesterday, but Rogers has now just started accepting pre-orders for both the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play and Xperia Arc, each of which will run you $99.99 on a three-year contract (there's no indication of off-contract pricing). iPad 2 mirroring: Capturing video in higher definition
Co-blogger Steve Sande and I have been collaborating on our attempts to find a solid solution that allows iPad 2 owners to use the screen mirroring feature in tandem with a computer video capture tool; this would simplify screencasting, training, recording and scores of other things. The iPad's effect on rival companies' CEOs
Apple's iPad and iPhone are shaking up the netbook and smartphone market, producing a chain reaction of events that has led to the resignation of chief executives from three major electronics manufacturers.

303.000 Nintendo 3DS am ersten Wochenende

Wintek sees 40 percent surge on iPad 2 demand
An Apple touch panel supplier, Wintek, saw its sales increase 40 percent month-over-month in March, according to Ticonderoga Securities analyst Brian White. "We believe Wintek's March sales surge highlights the strong ramp for the iPad 2," he notes in a memo, "and we expect to get more details from the Apple supply chain over the next week as monthly sales from TPK and other suppliers are released." Bei Skype in the Classroom handelt es sich um eine Initiative von Skype mit der Skype (was auch sonst) als Unterrichtstool eingesetzt werden soll. Und zwar nicht für die Schüler, sondern die Lehrer, die sich so schnell mit Kollegen zusammenschliessen können und über ihre Unterrichtsinhalte diskutieren und zusammen Lehrpläne entwickeln können sollen. How to enable Home Sharing on Mac and iOS devices
My wife and I both have an iPhone and a Mac. We also have an Apple TV in our living room. However, sharing our iTunes content (movies, music, books, apps, etc.) between these devices can be tricky, especially since we regularly hot swap our Macs and iPhones for general purposes, depending on whatever device is nearer.
Thankfully, Apple has made this a whole lot easier with Home Sharing, particularly with the latest version in iOS 4.3. Using the same Wi-Fi connection, Home Sharing allows you to share all the media on the iTunes libraries in your home with each other, and with your iOS devices.
Here's how to enable Home Sharing in your home.

Remember that line of VIA navigators we peeked back at CES? Looks like today's your lucky day if you were holding off to procure one. TomTom just announced retail availability of the VIA 1505, 1535, 1405 and 1435 in North America, and all of 'em can also be picked up with lifetime maps and / or lifetime traffic. The 14xx models will be boasting a 4.3-inch panel, while the 15xx editions gain a 5-inch display; the whole lot includes the company's new fold-and-go EasyPort mount, and variants do seem to be available with Bluetooth and advanced voice recognition. Time Warner adds 17 channels to iPad TV app in bounce back
Time Warner Cable on Friday shot back at the need to pull some channels from its TWCable TV iPad app by adding 17 new ones. Although it had to pull some key Discovery-, Fox-, and Viacom-owned stations, it now has major networks such as A&E, CNN, Disney, ESPNnews, IFC, and MSNBC, among others. It also managed to add Fox News despite the apparent deadlock.

Full-on electric drum kit shoved within a pair of jeans, subway musicians celebrate (video)
It's a natural progression, really. Way back in the heyday that was 2008, we saw a fully-functional keyboard worked into a pair of jeans. Three years later, those characters have morphed into something far more raucous. The University of Hull's own Aseem Mishra has just nabbed an prized engineering award for his recent musical work -- specifically, for integrating eight sensors into an otherwise ordinary set of trousers. For now, the wearer has to connect their legs into a speaker-filled backpack in order to be heard, but he's working on a wireless version that'll transmit to far larger sound systems. Leaks point to Windows 8 getting 'Immersive' tablet UI, dock
Microsoft's aim to get a tablet-optimized UI in Windows 8 was supported on Friday by registry key discoveries in a milestone build. Apple set to open massive European flagship store in Liechtenstein
It may be one of the smallest countries in Europe, but Vaduz, Liechtenstein will soon host Apple's largest European flagship Apple Store. The store, which will be located adjacent to the Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein (Liechtenstein's Museum of Modern Art) and open in September, will be even larger than London's 28,000 square-foot Regent Street Apple Store, measuring 43,000 square feet.
The first floor will be dedicated to showcasing Apple products, while the second floor will be comprised of multiple Genius Bars and staffed by over 100 multilingual Geniuses.

Netflix scores wider deal with Fox for older TV shows
Netflix on Friday landed another of its key content deals by expanding its relationship with Fox. The deal will dip into more classic shows like Ally McBeal and The Wonder Years but also give access to parts of more current content, such as the first season of Glee and the the first two seasons of Sons of Anarchy. Some movies will also be coming, but unlike most of Netflix's recent deals, will have to wait until after the pay TV window expires.

Microsoft rejects Windows Phone 7 app in ironic block
Microosft in a rare step not only rejected a Windows Phone 7 app but did so two weeks after it had been published. Imagewind, a Twitter photo scraper app, was approved on March 3 and again with an update on March 16. Early last week, however, Neowin notes Microsoft was at first silent on a pinch-to-zoom update, and on Friday told Imagewind it had to be taken down for lacking a filter to screen out the "too graphic" content that sometimes populates Twitter.

Keylogger-Vorwurf gegen Samsung war ein Irrtum
Der Sicherheitsforscher, der Samsung vorgeworfen hatte, auf fabrikneuen Notebooks einen Keylogger installiert zu haben, ist widerlegt worden. Carriers dash hopes for London Tube Wi-Fi by 2012 Olympics
Four UK carriers and Huawei on Friday said they had scrapped plans to light up the London Underground with Wi-Fi in time for the 2012 summer Olympics. The team determined that the old, narrow tunnels would have taken too much time to get a truly complete network ready. Adobe demos Photoshop on the iPad
Photography Bay has posted a rather exciting video, taken at Adobe's Photoshop World 2011 keynote, that demonstrates a "concept" Photoshop app for the iPad. Although you can already get Adobe's Photoshop Express app for the iPad, what's demoed in the video simply blows that out of the water.
With layers and filters, the video demonstrates manipulating multiple pictures without any lag or delay, and there's a particularly nifty animation that reveals the layers you're working with and how they all fit together. Fukushima: Drohne schießt HiRes-Fotos und zeigt Ausmaß des Desasters
Noch immer ist nicht klar, wie groß das Ausmaß der AKW-Katastrophe im nordjapanischen Fukushima wirklich ist. Wo auf der einen Seite Informationen nicht transparent kommuniziert zu werden scheinen, hat die Webseite Pink Tentacles beeindruckende HiRes-Fotos vom Ort des Geschehens online gestellt. Die Bilder entstanden im Zeitraum vom 20.03-24.03. und wurden von einer unbemannten Drohne der Firma Air Photo Service aus der Präfektur Niigata geschossen. Scientists propose a 'journey to the mantle of the Earth'
This particular "journey" may not involve any humans descending into the Earth, but that doesn't mean it isn't still plenty ambitious -- a pair of scientists are now proposing to drill to the Earth's mantle and bring back some samples, effectively picking up where the first attempt to do so left off some fifty years ago. Of course, the key word here is "proposing," but the scientists, Damon Teagle and Benoît Ildefonse, say that we now have the technology and knowledge necessary to do so, and that drilling could begin by 2020 if everything goes as planned. Acer reorgs focused on mobile, tablet forecasts kept high
Acer CFO Tu Che-min and Chairman JT Wang on Friday outlined a consciously mobile-oriented focus for restructuring in the wake of the forced departure of its CEO Gianfranco Lanci the day before. I got to see the Trainz Simulator in action at GDC this year. The Trainz series of software is extremely popular on the PC, and the company released an iPad version a little while ago to pretty high acclaim so far. I will admit to knowing nearly nothing about trains, either the real or the miniature kind (though I did have a small set as a kid), but I have to say I was impressed by the variety of the options available on the iPad version -- you can create a full virtual train set, from locomotive to caboose and even the buildings and scenery around it, completely within the touch interface of the iPad.
It's pretty impressive. If you're not already schooled in the way of the model train, you might even be a little overwhelmed with all of the options available. But it is a fun way to play around w

Viber for iPhone updated with free text messaging
I liked Viber when I tested it several months ago. It's an iPhone VoIP app that allows free phone calls to any phone that has the app installed. I thought the terrific audio quality, lack of ads and ease of setup were all positives.
Viber has been updated today to version 2.01 with free text messaging to all your Viber contacts. There are also notifications for incoming text messages, and the app has some small GUI improvements. Although Viber currently does not support the iPad or iPod touch the developers say that is "almost here."

Microsoft gibt nach einem knappen Jahr der Existenz ein paar Zahlen zum Stand von Windows Phone 7 raus. 11.500 Apps gibt es jetzt und dabei wurden, keine Angst, Wallpaper nicht gezählt. Die Entwickler werden an den AppHub Community Mitgliedern gezählt und kommen auf immerhin 36.000 mit 1.200 neuen jede Woche. Die Developer Tools wurden 1,5 Millionen Mal runtergeladen. und 1.100 der Apps nutzen Ad Control um über Werbung zusätzlich Gewinn zu machen.

Eric Jackson at Forbes has written a piece with some astounding numbers about Apple's business in China. Most impressively, Jackson thinks because of Apple's China business Apple shares will hit $547 per share by January 2012, only nine months away. Mac OS X Lion: Scrollrichtung umkehren mit Scroll Reverser

Bern erhält Apple Store am Bahnhofplatz
Am Bahnhofplatz 1 in Bern wird Anfang 2012 der vierte Apple Retail Store der Schweiz eröffnet. Wie wir aus einer verlässlichen Quelle erfahren haben, wird der Store mit 450 Quadratmeter flächenmässig grösser als jener in Zürich (300qm) und wird sich über drei Stockwerke ausbreiten. Der aktuell noch an diesem Standort stehende PKZ wird per Ende Mai geschlossen, eine Ersatzlocation wurde noch nicht gefunden, wie uns ein leitender Angestellter der Filiale bestätigte.
Da bei den Gebäuden in und um die Bener Altstadt ein strenger Denkmalschutz herrscht, soll der Store am Bahnhofplatz mit nachgebauten, für die Berner Altstadt typischen Arkaden ausgeschmückt werden. Der altstätdliche Flair der Gebäude soll demnach auch in der Innenarchitektur beibehalten werden. Damit dürfte der Berner Store dem speziellen Apple Store beim Covent Garden in London gleichen.

Apple-Zulieferer Foxconn meldet Jahresverlust von 218 Millionen Dollar

Time Warner's TWCable TV app has been forced to drop several channels after some programmers demanded it do so. Schmidt leads CEO approval rankings, Jobs slips to second
Despite Steve Jobs' presence at the top of Barron's latest list of 'Most Valuable' CEOs, the Apple co-founder has slipped behind Google head Eric Schmidt in terms of CEO approval ratings. Arkansas to get its first Apple Retail Store
This is going to make our readers in The Natural State very happy. Apple is set to open its first retail store in Arkansas. The store will be located in The Promenade at Chenal Mall in Little Rock, reports ifoAppleStore. While there is no hard opening date yet, all signs point to an October launch.

Sony Store LA opens April 1 with Apple cues, unique demos
Sony said this week it would launch its first US store based on its new store template. Now just called the Sony Store, the shop in the Century City Mall in Los Angeles has a "new concept" with Apple-like bright, widely spaced areas instead of the dark spaces from Sony Style locations. Apple starts running out of original iPads in any form
Apple showed the first signs it was running entirely dry of original iPads on Thursday after the 16GB Wi-Fi iPad disappeared from the online Apple Store. Neither the clearance nor refurb sections show the basic model. Only 32GB and 64GB Wi-Fi capacities exist alongside the 3G models, and the clearance section now only has 3G models.

Lion's Screen Sharing app goes multi-user, more
Screen Sharing in the forthcoming Mac OS X 10.7 "Lion" has been considerably beefed up, now allowing multiple remote users to log into accounts that are not currently active, and allowing for concurrent users working independently of each other -- much closer to Apple Remote Desktop's ability or Microsoft's Terminal Services, according to an investigation by AppleInsider. The app has been updated from v1.1 to v1.3, and now allows completely separate sessions from any other locally- or remotely-logged in user.

Sword and Sworcery EP coming out April 5, iPhone version in a few weeks
Sword and Sworcery is an unqualified hit for the iPad -- as I said when it released, we've been following this one for a while, and it's great to see such a solid indie effort recognized by critics and consumers alike. While the game is out for iPad, the property is far from over. A full EP based on the music of the game, written by musician Jim Guthrie, has been announced for release on April 5th, next Tuesday. "The Ballad of the Space Babies" will be available as a vinyl record, or online as a digital download in iTunes or Bandcamp.

SIM-Drive's SIM-LEI electric car achieves 207-mile driving range in Japan
Manufacturers are constantly optimising the driving range for electric vehicles, and sure enough, a Japanese startup recently made a breakthrough with its first prototype. Dubbed the SIM-LEI, this cute four-wheeler from SIM-Drive sips juice off a Toshiba 24.9kWh lithium ion battery, and can go from zero to 100km/h (62mph) in just 4.8 seconds, with maximum speed topping at 150km/h (93mph). Patent hints at Apple's Spaces on the iPad
PatentlyApple has dug up a patent application Apple filed with the USPTO, which demonstrates that Apple is at least considering bringing Spaces to the iPad. While not mentioning the iPad by name, the patent does say that "In some embodiments, the device [for this patent application] is a desktop computer. Amazon mulls its own NFC shopping service
Amazon may be the next to jump on NFC support as a scoop may have uncovered its plans. Its Amazon Payments division is considering using NFC both for payments, such as swiping a phone at a register, as well as for marketing. In one proposal, it would even put NFC tags on the goods themselves; Bloomberg envisioned using an NFC tag on a pair of jeans to find the right size on Amazon's own website.

Garageband 6.0.2 adds iPad imports
Apple this evening released a minor update to the Mac version of Garageband, v6.0.2, which the company says "improves overall stability and addresses a number of minor issues." The most significant improvement is adding support for opening projects imported from Garageband for iPad. Latest Lion build features iCal, iChat redesign
The latest Lion Developer Preview released yesterday features some cool new redesigns of a few of Mac OS X's built-in apps. First up is a completely redesigned iCal. The new iCal now closely resembles the Calendar app you find on the iPad. It sports a leather header, complete with strips of torn away calendars. The overall look and feel of the new iCal, like its iPad counterpart, now closely resembles a physical desktop calender.
Another redesign, though less noticeable than the new iCal UI, is an updated iChat UI which combines AIM, Jabber, and Bonjour contacts together in one window. This is a welcome tweak, as previously iChat separated all your different contacts into separate windo

Google becomes key NFC Forum member, drops QR from Places
Google made two big pushes towards NFC that culminated in its formal link to the technology on Thursday. It officially joined the NFC Forum as a principal member and now had the same importance as companies like CSR and Intel, which raised their statuses to the same level. Taiwanese firm to ship 30 million iPad 2 screens
Reuters is reporting that Taiwanese tech manufacturer AU Optronics Corp. has won a major contract from Apple to provide flat panel screens for the ultra-popular iPad 2.
With the high demand for the new device, it's no surprise that Apple is looking for new sources for this critical iPad 2 component. The AU Optronics contract will provide up to 30 million of the displays, occupying over half the capacity of the company's plant in Taichung.

Hasbro offering hand-held 3D viewer for iPhone, iPod Touch
Toymaker Hasbro is offering a 21st-century take on the old GAF ViewMaster, creating a handheld viewer called My3D that incorporates recent-model iPhones or iPod Touches along with stereoscopic apps to produce immersive 3D and in some instances 360-degree panoramic experiences. Verizon fears AT&T/T-Mobile as cause to regulate, roaming
Verizon's chief lobbyist and former Republican Tom Tauke said Thursday that his company was worried the AT&T buyout of T-Mobile would justify the FCC regulating the industry further. He brought up anti-government fears that it would lead to "government management of the marketplace" and wanted the FCC to keep any merger terms limited to the transaction, not the Internet as a whole. Images leak out of Pentax NC mirrorless camera system, makes us long for summertime
At this point, we're guessing that it's just a matter of time before the likes of Pentax and Nikon toss their hat into the ever-expanding mirrorless camera ring, and at least for the former, it looks as if that could come sooner rather than later. Twitter for iPhone updated, QuickBar is dead
The Twitter for iPhone app has been updated (again), and this time the company has included the change everyone's been waiting for: the QuickBar, which featured trending terms along with some paid placement phrases, has been removed from the app. Twitter deftly sidesteps the actual reason why the bar was removed, but their reasoning basically lands on the idea that the bar didn't "improve the user experience" or serve the mission of connecting people to trends on the service. Time Warner removes channels from iPad app while Cablevision prepares one of its own
Time Warner Cable was the first party to blink in the battle with programmers over its new live TV streaming TWCable TV iPad app, removing channels from Viacom, Fox and Discovery.
