Harvard physicist puts fires out with electrified wand, hopes to share on HarvardConnection
Okay, so maybe Ludovico Cademartiri will be forced to share the good news on Facebook (or ConnectU, if he's into playing the role of rebel), but at least he's bound to see over a couple of hundred hits. According to The Harvard Crimson, the aforesaid physicist and a smattering of other researchers have stumbled upon a novel way to extinguish flames: electricity. The idea is eventually enable firefighters to squash fires without having to douse a home or object with water and foam -- if hit with a beam of juice, there's at least a sliver of a chance that something can be salvaged. Adobe demos Photoshop for iPad with real layer support
Adobe at the Photoshop World conference this morning showed off a version of Photoshop for the iPad that could give the tablet real Photoshop image editing. Unlike the mostly filter-based Photoshop Express, the unnamed version would let users add, switch to, and edit layers with an isometric view to show the different layers at a glance. Other additions should bring image objects that can be dragged and rotated as well as a color mixer that allows blending "like a painter."

Microsoft's 'updated Xbox 360 disc format' to add an extra gigabyte?
As you'll recall from yesterday, there was one small detail that stood out in Microsoft's announcement of a new preview program for the Xbox 360 -- namely, word that the latest system update would bring with it an "updated Xbox 360 disc format." That naturally prompted plenty of speculation, and Eurogamer now says it has heard from a "highly placed development source" who has confirmed that the new disc format actually adds 1GB of storage space to Xbox 360 discs. Sony intros wireless headphones, noise-cancelling earbuds
Sony UK this week introduced two new sets of headphones. The large, over-the-ear MDR-RF865RK set has a wireless range of up to 100 meters (nearly 330 feet) and sports built-in batteries that are recharged when the set is returned to its stand. They have 40mm drivers for solid audio performance and a built-in volume control. A full recharge takes 3.5 hours, with battery life rated at 25 hours.

Medical iPad adoption spurred in part by US government
Reimbursements from the US government may be playing a significant role in fostering iPad adoption by doctors, CNBC suggests. The government is operating a program called Meaningful Use, which allows doctors and hospitals to claim Medicare and Medicaid expenses when buying specific technology. The aim of the initiative is to increase migration to electronic records, theoretically reducing healthcare costs while improving the quality of service.

British MP delivers speech in Parliament from an iPad
Well, it was sort of accidental. Labour MP Kerry McCarthy wanted to deliver a speech in the House of Commons, and there were so many last minute changes to the text she just decided to read it from her iPad.
The Mirror reports the use of the iPad was the first after a rule change that allowed iPads in the chamber. Devices no bigger than a sheet of A4 paper are allowed, so smartphones and tablets are OK but laptops are still not allowed.

Google to receive regular privacy audits following FTC ruling on Buzz
Well, it looks like the spectre of Buzz will be looming large over Google for some time to come -- the company has just reached an agreement with the FTC that will see it receive independent privacy audits every two years for the next twenty years following a ruling that found Google violated its own privacy policy with the service. In a blog post today, Google also says that it will now "ask users to give us affirmative consent" before it makes any changes in how it shares their personal information, and it adds that it would like to "apologize again for the mistakes we made with Buzz." Microsoft's Mundie unsure on tablets, admits slow to act
Microsoft's research and strategy chief Craig Mundie at a Committee for Economic Development of Australia event cast doubt on the long-term viability of tablets. He wasn't sure the iPad or its kind would "remain with us or not" and instead repeated Microsoft's existing strategy of Windows notebooks and Windows Phone handsets. Boxee details next Box update with iPad support and more in May
We refuse to be surprised that the next Boxee Box update isn't actually arriving by the end of March, but just to tide us over CEO Avner Ronen has picked up his blogging pen and revealed many of the changes on the way. Boxee details May update for iPad app, speedy browser
Boxee on Wednesday afternoon detailed the promised update coming in May for the Boxee Box. The upgrade will bring support for the hinted at Boxee for iPad app to stream the media hub's content to an Apple tablet. Rumor: New iMacs on tap for April or May
A couple of tweets from CNET's Brian Tong are fueling speculation that a new batch of iMacs are on their way to the US, with an expected debut in late April or early May.
In a tweet a little over a week ago, Tong noted "New iMacs en route by ocean to U.S. available end of April or 1st week of May. No major cosmetic changes." That tweet was followed by another today that reiterated the timeframe for new iMac models.

Witness turns Mac into motion-sensing security camera
Orbicule has launched Witness, new home security software for the Mac. The utility relies on a Mac's webcam to provide motion detection; when motion is observed, the app begins recording stills and video. The media is then sent to a person's iPhone or iPad. NoDo Windows Phone 7 update hits the Venue Pro, Dell update to follow
Well, it looks like Venue Pro owners will be getting not one but two software updates in the near future. Dell has just confirmed that the much-anticipated NoDo Windows Phone 7 update has begun rolling out to devices today, and also announced that a separate update of its own will be "coming later." NoDo, of course, adds copy and paste functionality among some other updates and tweaks, while the Dell update is only said to have "more fixes." HP rolling out webOS 3.0 beta to Early Access developers today
Interested in developing for HP's upcoming TouchPad? Sure you are -- but to play ball, you're going to need access to webOS version 3.0, which the company has announced will be getting delivered as part of the festivities at its webOS Connect event in London today. Gartner: iPad saving technology spending in 2011
Gartner in a study credited tablets, primarily the iPad, to saving tech spending in 2011. Apple and the others following it into the field would help boost IT spending this year by 5.6 percent, to $3.6 trillion. Without them, spending would have gone slightly down, research VP Richard Gordon said.

Popular Science reveals low iPad subscription numbers
The iPad version of Popular Science has accumulated over 10,000 subscriptions as of Sunday, according to publisher Bonnier Technology Group. The company claims to be "very excited" about the milestone, which was reached only six weeks after Apple switched to a new in-app subscription model. Customers can now order the new Samsung 4G LTE Mobile Hotspot online or in Verizon Stores, Samsung and Verizon announced on Tuesday. The new mobile hotspot, which allows up to five Wi-Fi-enabled devices to connect to Verizon's 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) network at the same time, will begin shipping on March 31.

Softbank to replace iPhones lost in Japan's earthquake, tsunami
In the midst of an overwhelming catastrophe, Japan's wireless carrier Softbank is stepping up to the plate to help many of those affected by the Japanese earthquake and tsunami. Softbank CEO Masayoshi Son recently traveled to Tamura, a city that is serving as a refuge for those devastated by the tsunami and Fukishima nuclear disaster. Son was moved by what he experienced and offered to buy food, pay for commuting costs and provide jobs for 1,200 people to relocate to Takeo, Saga.

SoftBank chief vows replacement iPhones, more post-quake
SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son has said on Twitter, on his company's crowdsourcing page, and in the news from Taiwan's EDN that he would implement a major relief campaign to help those affected by the Tohoku-area earthquake in Japan. Among the gestures will include free iPhones for those whose were broken or lost in the 9.0-scale disaster as well as free phones and service for any child orphaned by the earthquake until they reach age 18. Man könnte sagen, dass AirPlay schon ein gutes Tool ist, um Video auf einen Fernseher zu bringen, allerdings funktioniert es nur mit ein paar Apps und bietet maximal 720p. Es gibt zwar ein HDMI-Kabel von Apple, aber das ist natürlich schon ein bisschen Oldschool. Ein Mitglied aus dem MacRumors Forum hat sich deshalb mit einem drahtlosen HDMI-Transmitter, einem USB-Batteriepack und einem selbstgebastelten Gehäuse eine drahtlose Lösung gebastelt, die allerdings auch knapp ein Kilo Gewicht auf die Waage bringt und das iPad etwas klobig macht, dafür aber tadellos funktioniert. Hoffen wir mal, dass es bald einen Jailbreak gibt, der die Bastelei unnötig macht

Analysts are responding to Apple's planned WWDC conference and the ensuing rumor that suggests Apple may delay the launch of iOS 5 and the iPhone 5 until the fall. Windows 8 to clone Apple's Time Machine with History Vault
A leak Wednesday has uncovered plans for Windows 8 to imitate the behavior of Time Machine in Mac OS X. Nicknamed History Vault, it would use the Shadow Copies feature that came as early as Vista but give it a proper visual interface for restoring older files. The WinRumors shot doesn't provide many details of the restoration process but shows that users could use both real and virtual drives to make a History Vault archive.

Prinzipiell ist heute ja alles Spionage-Tool und wenigstens der Videopart ist dabei auch durchaus ernstzunehmen, während die Hobby-Agenten-Gadgets gerne versagen, wenn es um die Audiospur geht. Darüber hinaus sind natürlich Wahl und Gestaltung des Tarnobjekts entscheidend, womit die Spionagebrille vorne dran ist und sich in ihrer Klobigkeit auch erstmal geschmeidig an den Zeitgeist anschmiegt. In den entscheideneden Gestaltungsdetails offenbart sich aber leider die Herkunft aus dem Perlflussdelta. Schade aber toll. Ach so: Das Ding filmt mit 1280 mal 720 with 30 FPS, gespeichert wird auf 4 GB internen Speicher und an den Rechner geht´s via USB. Für 84,31 Euro seid ihr dabei.

Analysts issue cautions based on iPhone 5, limits to growth
Still more analysts are adopting a cautions approach to Apple stock alongside Pacific Crest's Andy Hargreaves. Shaw Wu -- now with Sterne Agee -- is mostly upbeat, in fact raising his firm's price target from $400 to $445. He suggests that Macs could grow from 4.5 to 10 percent of the market in the next few years, and that Apple could take 15 to 17 percent of the computer market if the iPad is counted.

iPad 2 lines persist two weeks after launch
No, this doesn't mean that some people have been standing in line for two weeks non-stop; it means that lines continue to form at Apple stores around the USA as new shipments of iPad 2s arrive.

Music artists, labels create enhanced albums for iPad
Launched with iTunes 9, iTunes LP would let record labels include extra content such as liner notes, expanded artwork and lyrics in albums sold on iTunes. The feature never took off, but the concept of adding value to an album using interactive digital content has not died. Record labels such as Universal Music Group and EMI are now looking to the iPad as a way to entice customers to purchase a full album with value-added content instead of individual tracks.

30 percent of Chinese mobile users planning to buy a 3G smartphone as their next phone plan to purchase an iPhone, according to the results of a new survey. Musikmesse 2011: Novation Slicer (Video)

So langsam gibt es ein paar News zur nächste Woche Mittwoch beginnenden Frankfurter Musikmesse 2011. Von Novation wird es einen neuen DJ Controller namens Slicer geben, von dem im Teaser-Video nach dem Break schon ein paar flüchtige Eindrücke zu sehen sind. Laut djtechtools besitzt der Slicer zwei Kanäle und einen Mixer in der Mitte, unterstützt werden sollen Serato Scratch, Itch und Traktor von Native Instruments. Jeder der beiden Kanäle scheint mit einem Touchstrip ausgestattet zu sein, außerdem gibt es pro Kanal acht Pads, die wahrscheinlich zum Ansteuern von Loops gedacht sind. iPad 2 3G teardown proves ties to iPhone 4 design, upgrades
A follow-up teardown of the 3G version of the iPad 2 by iFixit has shown how closely linked Apple's tablets are to their iPhone 4 equivalents. The EVDO-based 3G version is near identical to the Verizon iPhone 4 and has the same dual-mode Qualcomm MDM6600 chipset, although the GSM and HSPA sides aren't being used. The HSPA-based 3G version for AT&T and the world is using an Infineon 337S3833 baseband chip to get online but has upgraded to a newer Broadcom BCM4751 for the GPS chipset.

Um ein bisschen Leben in die Foto-Ödnis zu bringen: Der dominante weiße Krater heißt Debussy, und seine Strahlen dehnen sich über hunderte Kilometer aus. Merkur-Krater werden immer nach "verstorbenen Künstlern, Musikern, Malern und Autoren" benannt, und genauso wenig wie jede Delle auf dem Merkur einen Künstlernamen verdient, verdient jede Hupfdohle auf der Erde einen Merkurkrater. Microsoft keeps gunning after Apple's 'generic' App Store trademark, brings in a linguistics expert
We'd say this was getting silly but that would imply that it wasn't already. Microsoft and Apple are still at each other's throat over the latter's trademark application for the term "App Store," with Microsoft now bringing in a Dr. Ronald Butters, Professor Emeritus at Duke University and a man with a taste for hardcore semantics. He says the compound noun "app store" is perfectly generic in that it "does not merely describe the thing named, it is the thing named." Nach Botnetz-Schließung: Weltweites Spamaufkommen sinkt um ein Drittel
Die Symantec-Tochter MessageLabs hat zwischen dem 15. und 17. März einen deutlichen Rückgang des weltweiten Spamaufkommens registriert. Die Zahl unerwünschter E-Mails ging in diesem Zeitraum um 33,6 Prozent von rund 52 Milliarden Nachrichten pro Tag auf 33 Milliarden Nachrichten zurück. Study: US digital music will overtake CDs in 2012
Digital music should overtake CDs in the US for the first time next year, Strategy Analytics said in a new study. It expected CDs to continue dropping a steep 40 percent from $3.8 billion in revenue for 2010 to just $2.7 billion in 2012. Digital, led mostly by iTunes, would keep growing and just edge past the physical medium to hit $2.8 billion.

Nachdem Sony den guten Aibo auf Eis gelegt hat, will die koreanische Firma DasaRobot mit ihrem GENIBO die entstandene Lücke fülllen. GENIBO soll noch hundeartiger sein als Aibo, aber wenn man sich das Video ansieht, fragt man sich schon, was DasaRobot unter "hundeartiger" versteht: Headspin auf den Vorderpfoten? Mozilla gibt Final von Firefox 4 für Android und Maemo frei
Mozilla hat den vergangene Woche erschienenen Release Candidate von Firefox 4 für Android und Maemo (Codename Fennec 2.0) inzwischen zur finalen Version erklärt. Der Mobilbrowser basiert auf der Desktop-Variante von Firefox 4, die Mozilla zufolge in der ersten Woche nach der Veröffentlichung am 22. März über 41 Millionen Mal heruntergeladen wurde. Er arbeite bis zu dreimal schneller als der vorinstallierte Android-Standardbrowser und biete neben einer schlanken Oberfläche nahezu alle bekannten Firefox-Funktionen wie Tabbed Browsing, Lesezeichen, Add-ons, HTML-5-Support und Synchronisation, heißt es in einem Blogeintrag zum Release.

Kingston SSDNow V100: Fehler kann zu Datenverlust führen
Wie Kingston bekannt gegeben hat, wurde ein schwerwiegender Fehler in der Firmware der SSDNow-V100-Serie gefunden, durch den ein Datenverlust entstehen kann. iSuppli hat die Herstellungskosten der Nintendo 3DS analysiert: demnach kosten alle Bauteile zusammen ca. 71 Euro, etwa zwei Euro kostet dann der Zusammenbau. Damit verdient Nintendo mit der 3DS pro Stück deutlich mehr als noch mit der DSi: der Anteil der Hardwarekosten lag beim Vorgänger bei etwa 44 Prozent, bei der 3DS sind es nur noch 35 Prozent. Die 3DS scheint sich für Nintendo auch sonst zum Erfolg zu entwickeln, denn der Markstart in den USA soll der erfolgreichste aller Nintendo-Handeheld-Konsolen bisher gewesen sein.

Rumor: BlackBerry Messenger to land in the App Store on April 26
Rumblings of an iPhone version of BlackBerry messenger surfaced earlier this month from an unidentified source that provided a tip to BGR. Dell insists iPad can't succeed in enterprise
Dell's head of global enterprise marketing Andy Lark told CIO in an interview Tuesday that he was certain the iPad would be overtaken in the enterprise by Android and Windows. Apple Q2 2011 earnings call scheduled for April 20
Apple's second quarter ends this week on Thursday, March 31, and the company has already scheduled the earnings call with financial analysts to discuss just how good (or bad) things were during the quarter.
As you can see, the call is scheduled for 5 PM ET (2 PM PT) on Wednesday, April 20. That's at the time we normally host TUAW TV Live, so we may look into combining the call with a livestreaming video event for readers to join in on rather than our usual liveblog.

Scientists develop 'nanogenerators' that could power iPods
A team of scientists from the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta have developed chips that can use normal body movements to generate sufficient power to run LCD displays and diodes or transmit a radio signal, according to a report in the UK's Telegraph newspaper. Their goal is to create a method by which the body's own movement could power implantable medical devices, or the portable electronics people carry with them, such as iPods.

Windows Phone 7 may get NFC in 2011 in five-way fight
Hints that Microsoft might add NFC to Windows Phone 7 gained corroboration Tuesday with a pair of tips from insiders. The feature would be used for the expected role of mobile payments and would have the feature baked into the OS itself. Pioneer demos new iPhone-powered in-dash interface
We first heard about Pioneer's AVIC in-car units back at CES earlier this year, but earlier today, the company was kind enough to drive a Land Rover up to my curb here in Los Angeles, and I checked out the system in action. The main unit, as you can see in the picture above, is a pretty standard touchscreen in-dash interface -- you can use it to flip between any in-car audio or video controls you have, and of course it has a built-in GPS unit and can do all of the usual navigation things like give you a route or check traffic.
But the interesting thing about this one is that it hooks up to your iPhone -- you can just barely see Pioneer's demo iPhone in the picture above, plugged into a dock cable that runs up through

Amazon intros Cloud Drive and Cloud Player [U]
[Update: Sony, other media companies upset by early announcement] Amazon in the night unveiled its rumored media locker and beat Apple and Google in the process. Cloud Drive gives users a way to store a minimum of 5GB of files on the web and access them from any Mac or PC. The company has a unique tie-in with Amazon MP3: any songs bought through the music store are saved to the Cloud Drive and available either for backup or for remote streaming without counting towards the quota.

Microsoft cites Amazon Appstore in Apple trademark spat
Microsoft in a response to the USPTO (below) on Tuesday cited the just launched Amazon Appstore as evidence that Apple couldn't maintain "app store" as a trademark. It used the launch last Tuesday as evidence that there was a "competitive need" from companies to use the concept of an app store generically. About 17 stores were already using it where Apple had claimed that use beyond its own shop was virtually non-existent, Microsoft said, and those that hadn't had primarily been intimidated into avoiding the name.

HTC HD7 finally gets NoDo, WP7 users revel in the splendor of copy / paste
Last week, Microsoft released a NoDo update schedule for all of its WP7 devices, and it looks like T-Mobile's keeping to the plan. Nintendo says 3DS set sales record, to give numbers April 14
Nintendo told the media that the 3DS launch had set a company record for first-day sales.
