TeleNav bringing hybrid navigation to GPS apps, providing cached routes when you need 'em most
If there's two things the world needs, it's a complete lack of international roaming charges, and GPS signals that never fade. Oh, and for Slash to not play the last Super Bowl with the Black Eyed Peas -- we suppose that makes three. At any rate, at least we're moving somewhat closer to a reality that solves the middle issue, with TeleNav announcing this week that it'll be implementing "hybrid navigation technology" into its apps (including the new iOS version) in the very near future. Trade Nations dev picks up new funding, former Xbox exec Ed Fries
Here's another iPhone dev hitting the jackpot: Developer Z2Live is the company behind the hit iPhone social game Trade Nations, and it's picked up what's probably a nice chunk of change in a round of funding from VC firm Draper Fisher Jurvetson. Unfortunately, the actual total of funding hasn't been disclosed, but given the popularity of the game and its in-app purchase business model, there's likely six digits or more of money changing hands here.
Enough to attract some talent, too -- the company has also picked up Ed Fries to join the board of directors. Fries was originally a Microsoft executive who co-founded the Xbox Project, and helped put together Microsoft Games Studios. More recently, he's been working on 3D printing at

iPhone 4 überlebt Sturz aus 300 Metern Höhe
Wo manche iPhones schon kaputt gehen, wenn sie nur aus einem Meter fallen gelassen werden, scheint dieses Exemplar ein wahres Wunder zu sein: Der U.S. Air Force Combat Controller Ron Walker (kursiv bitte) war gerade dabei, einige Fallschirmabsprünge zu koordinieren, als sein iPhone beim Lehnen aus dem Flugzeug bei 240km/h aus seiner Tasche fiel. Er dachte sich: "Na, dann kauf ich mir eben ein neues Handy." Als er dann gelandet war, erzählte er Freunden die Story. Sie luden sich die Find my iPhone-App auf ein zweites Gerät und hatten das verlorene iPhone innerhalb weniger Sekunden lokalisiert. Es befand sich in einem Wald zwischen einer zweispurigen Autobahn und einem See. Nach etwa einer Stunde hatte man das iPhone dann gefunden.

Google HQ gets juiced with Plugless Power EV charging unit

Serlet departure made on good terms, sources say
The departure of Bertrand Serlet from Apple is being done on good terms, sources claim. Until today, Serlet was the company's senior VP of Mac software engineering. Officially the executive has said he is leaving to "focus less on products and more on science;" in any case he is just moving on, the sources contend. "Thereís no acrimony there," one of the sources explains, describing the transition as simply a "changing of the guard."

OS X 10.6.7 update causing problems with 3D acceleration for Quadro 4000 users
Users of NVIDIA's Quadro 4000 workstation graphics card may have a problem with 3D acceleration when updating to OS X 10.6.7. Apparently NVIDIA's display driver was incompatible with OS X 10.6.7 and during the installation process the updater simply removes it. Without having the right driver the system can't take advantage of all the Quadro's features, and you may end up wondering why some things aren't working.
The good news is that there's an easy fix. Earlier today NVIDIA released a new version of the driver and you're a quick update away from having everything running normally again.

Best Buy signs up for LightSquared's wholesale LTE service
First it was Cricket Wireless, and now another piece of LightSquared's puzzle has fallen into place -- it's just announced at CTIA that Best Buy has signed on as a wholesale customer for the yet-to-be-launched LTE network. FaceTime app freezing on iPad 2
Numerous reports have been appearing on Apple's support forums and other places that FaceTime is affected by a bug that causes the program to freeze, particularly when trying to switch between front and back cameras. Users are left with a still image on both ends of the call. It's unclear at the moment whether this is strictly a bug in the iPad 2 version of FaceTime or a systemic iOS issue.

Investors re-elect Jobs to Disney board
Bloomberg is reporting that Disney investors today have re-elected Steve Jobs to Disney's board of directors. The re-election comes despite proxy advisers who advised the share holders not re-elect Jobs, on account that his health issues might affect his ability to serve in an adequate manner.

Apple could be licensing AirPlay for video streaming, HDTV integration seems imminent
There's nothing concrete to sink your teeth into just yet, but a couple of people "familiar with the matter" have informed Bloomberg that Apple could be taking AirPlay to the next level. Up until now, companies have been shelling out $4 per device to add AirPlay audio streaming into their products, but there's a very real demand for video to be included in that as well. According to sources, the video streaming protocol is already baked in, but not enabled / allowed under the current licensing agreement. Kyocera launches developer program for dual-screen Echo smartphone
Kyocera promised that an SDK for its dual-screen Echo smartphone would be coming soon when it announced it last month, and it's now delivered that and more. It's just kicked off a full-fledged Android Developer Program for the phone, which will give developers access to Kyocera's support team, additional promotion and co-marketing opportunities for their apps, and even loaner units, although it's not clear exactly who's eligible for the latter. Report: Apple to expand AirPlay plans
Man, I could have told you this one: Bloomberg is reporting that Apple plans to extend its AirPlay service out even further, licensing it out to television sets that would then be able to receive and display video directly from iDevices -- bypassing the need to plug in an Apple TV and pay $99. Currently, third-party device support for AirPlay only covers audio and certain Airplay-enabled stereo devices, but it's far from a stretch to think that Apple will go to video soon, especially since you can currently stream any iTunes media through the AirPlay protocol.

Serlet trennt sich einvernehmlich von Apple, er wolle sich zukünftig weniger um konkrete Produkte, sondern mehr der Forschung widmen. North Carolina data center still on track for spring
Based on a talk with Apple executives, Apple's North Carolina data center should finally come online this spring, says Bernstein Research analyst Toni Sacconaghi. The facility was originally scheduled to come online by the end of 2010, but was delayed for unknown reasons. Snapkeys keyless keyboard hands-on
Okay, we admit, we were taken in by the video on Snapkey's site showing the keyboard in action before its inner workings were revealed at CTIA 2011. The system is actually quite simple: there are four boxes to tap for letters -- plus backspace and space -- and each represents a type of letter. Top left includes letters with one point that touches down like "i," bottom left includes closed letters such as "d," top right includes letters with two points on the bottom, and bottom right curved and letters with a flat base. Senators urge Apple to pull DUI checkpoint apps
A group of senators from four different states sent a message to Apple yesterday to pull any apps from the App Store that supposedly alert drivers of drunk driving checkpoints. The letter, which was also sent to Google and RIM, stated that "giving drunk drivers a free tool to evade checkpoints, putting innocent families and children at risk, is a matter of public concern," and mentioned just one such app, called PhantomALERT.

Vor wenigen Minuten hat Entwicklerin Sophia Teutscher auf Twitter mitgeteilt, dass ab sofort eine neue Version von CoverSutra im Mac App Store verfügbar ist.Bereits am Eröffnungstag des Mac App Stores gab es viel Ärger um CoverSutra: Käufer der Version vor dem Mac App Store sollten Updates bis (einschließlich) Version 3 erhalten. Leider klappte das nicht wie gewünscht. Shareholders re-elect Steve Jobs to Disney board
Investors have voted to re-elect Apple CEO Steve Jobs to the Disney board of directors, according to Bloomberg. An early count reportedly shows 74 percent of votes going to back Jobs and 12 other nominees. "The Walt Disney Company considers itself fortunate to have Steve Jobs as a member of its board of directors," reads an e-mail statement. Jobs did not attend the meeting, despite being the most powerful individual shareholder with 7.29 percent of Disney stock.

NVIDIA releases update for Quadro 4000 Mac Pro users
NVIDIA has launched a new driver release for Quadro 4000 Mac users. The update supports Mac OS X 10.6.7 and supports the4000's CUDA architecture with the CUDA 3.2 driver update. The update repairs issues introduced in Apple's OS 10.6.7 update, released Monday. It is a necessary driver for installing the 4000 in Mac Pro 2010 and 2009 models.

It already had its premiere in Monaco last year, but composer Tod Machover's new opera, "Death and the Powers," has now finally made it to the United States. Contending with seemingly insatiable demand for its new iPad 2, Apple is pondering paying higher prices for touch panel components, according to a report from DigiTimes on Wednesday. Motorola may make web-based OS to avoid leaning on Android
Motorola is quietly building a team to develop its own mobile OS and get away from its heavy dependence on Android, an insider said late Tuesday. Engineers have supposedly been quietly poached from Adobe and Apple over the past nine months. Apple is reportedly considering changes to its AirPlay standard, which may be updated with support for video streaming. Barnes & Noble may go without buyer due to bleak Nook future
Barnes & Noble may be close to giving up on looking for a buyer in a matter of weeks, five sources said Wednesday. Seven companies, including "strategic bidders" and private equity firms, have reportedly backed off after a recent round of bidding. A claim of hands-on time with iOS 4.3.1 appears to support the firmware's existence. Oracle entwickelt keine Itanium-Software mehr
Nach Microsoft und Red Hat hat sich nun auch Oracle entschlossen, keine Anwendungen mehr für die Itanium-CPU von Intel zu erstellen, die der Hersteller seit Jahren erfolglos als High-End-CPU zu positionieren versucht. "Nach zahlreichen Gesprächen mit dem Intel Senior Management hat sich Oracle dazu entschieden, die gesamte Software-Entwicklung für den Itanium-Mikroprozessor abzubrechen", heißt es in einer Mitteilung. Kingston is putting an extra boost the smallest of its tiny memory cards. The popular provider of flash storage is upping its 4GB and 8GB microSDHC cards from Class 4 specifications (up to a 4 MB/s transfer rate) to a whopping Class 10 spec and all of its 10 MB/s goodness. Vor 4 Tagen soll Apple eine Beschwerde über Amazon eingereicht haben, indem man über Markenzeichen-Verletzung und unlauterem Wettbewerb in Sachen "Amazon Appstore", dem kommenden App Store für Android-Geräte anzeigt. Apple's Pressesprecherin Kristin Huguet teilte Bloomberg mit, Amazon sei gebietet worden, nicht dem Namen "App Store" zu kopieren, weil es Kunden verwirren und irreführen würde. iPhone 4 survives 1,000 foot fall from airplane
Late last night, we received an email from U.S. Air Force Combat Controller Ron Walker, who wrote to share an incredible story about his iPhone 4.
Airman Walker's duties as a jump master require him to ensure that his aircraft is the the proper location before sending parachute jumpers into the air. One week ago (on March 16), he stuck his body out of the open door to look for landmarks as the plane sped through the air at 130 knots (about 150 m.p.h.). As he did, the Velcro seal on his pocket flew open, and out popped his iPhone. Airman Walker could do nothing but watch it fall away from the plane; he assumed it was lost forever, not to mention destroyed by the fall.

Apple spanks adult "app store" MiKandi with a cease-and-desist
This appears to be Apple's month to legally pursue anyone using the term "app store" to describe a virtual marketplace that sellsapps. Amazon was the most visible target to receive the wrath of the Cupertino lawyers when it was the recipient of a complaint from Apple about using the trademarked term "App Store" in its new Amazon Appstore.
Now Apple has aimed a bit lower, hitting Seattle-based MiKandi.com with a cease-and-desist order. Until this month, the site billed itself as "the world's first adult app store." After being pinged by Apple's lawyers, the site is now described as "the world's first adult app market."
That's not much of a change, but hopefully enough to keep Apple appeased until all is sorte

AT&T-Werbespot: Telefonieren und Surfen gleichzeitig möglich
In einem neuen Werbespot von AT&T für das iPhone 4 wird die Möglichkeit, mit AT&T gleichzeitig im Internet zu surfen und zu Telefonieren hervor gehoben, was mit dem neuen CDMA-iPhone 4 beim amerikanischen Konkurrenten Verizon nicht möglich ist. Früher war das nicht allzu relevant, aber das Personal Hotspot-Feature, das mit dem Verizon-iPhone eingeführt wurde, funktioniert bei Verizon eben nur, während nicht gerade telefoniert wird, während bei AT&T die Datenverbindung weiterhin aufrecht erhalten bleibt. Neue 3D-Linse packt mehrere Mikroskope in ein Mikroskop

Analysten befürchten Lieferengpässe durch Erdbeben in Japan
Die Analysten von DisplaySearch und iSuppli haben Berichte über die Auswirkungen der Katastrophen in Japan auf die Hardware-Branche veröffentlicht. Demnach wird sich der Ausfall von 25 Prozent der Produktion bei Silizium-Wafern spürbar auf den weltweiten Halbleitermarkt auswirken. Auch bei der Displayfertigung seien langfristig Verzögerungen zu erwarten. Kurzfristig könne man die Ausfälle über andere Lieferanten ausgleichen.

Adobe's Flash Player, Reader and Acrobat updated to close critical security hole
Adobe has issued an update to its popular Flash Player plug-in as well as its Reader and Acrobat software for viewing and editing PDF (portable document format) files.
According to Adobe's security bulletin and advisories webpage, a critical vulnerability has been identified in the above mentioned software that can "cause a crash and potentially allow an attacker to take control of the affected system."
Naturally, Adobe advises that users update their software to the latest version. The affected Flash Player versions are 10.2.152.33 and earlier (10.2.154.18 and earlier for Chrome users). The affected Acrobat and Reader versions are 10.0.1 and earlier 10.x and 9.x versions.

Chrome 11 goes beta with speech-to-text capabilities
Well, it looks like Google is unsurprisingly adding more than just a new logo to the latest version of its Chrome browser -- the just-released beta of Chrome 11 also now boasts speech-to-text capabilities. That comes in the form of support or the HTML5 speech input API, which web developers will be able to take advantage of to let folks simply talk to websites and have their speech magically transcribed to text. Also making a first appearance in the beta is support for GPU-accelerated 3D CSS, which will let developers apply all sorts of 3D effects to websites -- Blingee will never be the same, surely. Aperture updates to 3.1.2, fixes crash when importing iPhoto libraries
Aperture received an update Tuesday designed to address several issues regarding iPhoto compatibility and other bug fixes.
Many of the fixes focus on interaction with iPhoto. For example, the update fixes instances where Aperture crashes while importing large iPhoto libraries, and now imports albums from iPhoto 9 correctly. Also, importing slideshows with text slides and RAW images has also been improved. An issue that caused Aperture to stop responding when trying to process damaged images has also been resolved.

Auf den ersten Blick aus alternden Augen sieht die Lupe namens eyeCard wirklich vielversprechend aus: Kann dank Kreditkartenformat immer dabei sein und wenn es dann wirklich mal ans Kleingedruckte geht, hat man die Hände frei, weil das Teil auf die Nase geklemmt wird. Wiegt nur 5 Gramm, vergrößert 2,5fach und kostet im Doppelpack 18,90 Euro. OK, das ist jetzt nicht unbedingt günstig für zwei Plastikscheibchen. Und die Nasenklemmbügel sehen auch nicht gerade bequem aus und außerdem so, als würden sie beim zweiten Gebrauch abbrechen. Vielleicht doch eher ein Fall von schade aber toll.

Advisory firm joins in opposing Jobs seat on Disney board
Yet another group is now opposing Steve Jobs' re-election to the Disney board of directors. Advisory firm Glass Lewis & Co. has issued a report recommending Jobs' replacement, noting that the Apple CEO was missing from 75 percent of Disney board meetings in 2010. "We believe that in light of Mr. Jobs' continued medical problems, shareholders would be better served by a director able to make the necessary commitment to the company," the report says. Steve Jobs reportedly says "no plans" to discontinue iPod Classic
The iPod Classic is one of those Mac products that, like the Mac mini, is constantly rumored to be facing its imminent demise. But, the 160 GB classic still hangs in there -- its magnetic drive and scroll wheel offering the capacity that none of its flash-based siblings can't even hold a candle to.
A reader told MacRumors that he received an email from Steve Jobs in response to a frantic request not to discontinue the iPod Classic. ZTE gets tight with T-Mobile, launches Rocket 3.0 modem and 4G Mobile Hotspot for HSPA+
T-Mobile's 42Mbps HSPA+ coverage is expanding and expanding, and ZTE is helping to bring it back down to earth. Study shows LimeWire's exit slowed down music piracy
A new study by NPD Group found that illegal file sharing has dropped dramatically since a lawsuit shut down Limewire last year. The Recording Industry Association of American had sued parent company Lime Wire and its CEO Mark Gorton for copyright infringement, claiming that the peer-to-peer site encouraged pirating. The study found that after October 2010, when the service closed, the percentage of Internet users downloading music via P2P services dropped almost in half.

A couple of the other TUAW staffers have given you their first impressions of the iPad 2, but I'm coming at it from a different angle, because I used the original iPad for a grand total of about 20 minutes. This won't be a comparison of the new iPad versus the old; instead, it'll be my take on what this new device means to me and how it promises to reshape the way I interact with computers from now on.
When the iPad debuted in January of 2010, I wasn't particularly impressed. That's mostly because, like many other people, I'd been waiting for a device that was something halfway between an iPhone and a Mac leaning far more toward the Mac side of things, naturally.

Retail iPad 2 sales begin to relent
The pace of retail iPad 2 sales is finally beginning to slow somewhat, evidence suggests. In the Los Angeles area, workers at the Grove and Simi Valley Apple Stores say that for the first time on Tuesday, they had enough stock after lineups to briefly serve some walk-in customers. China, predictably, denies Google's accusations of Gmail tampering
On Monday, Google expressed its belief that its email users in China were experiencing "a government blockage carefully designed to look like the problem is with Gmail." Now, as is par for this thorny course, the Chinese state has come out with a terse rebuttal, saying simply that "this is an unacceptable accusation." Wi-Fi hotspot provider Boingo has released an updated version of its free Wi-Finder app. The software, which points users to over 325,000 public Wi-Fi hotspots around the world, now has a streamlined login function and selects the best network if more than one is currently available. Bertrand Serlet, one of the major forces behind OS X, to leave Apple
Bertrand Serlet, senior vice president of Mac Software Engineering and one of the developers of OS X, is leaving Apple after a 22-year working relationship with Steve Jobs. Serlet started working with Jobs in 1989 as part of NeXT and made the move to Apple in 1997 when Jobs returned to the company.
"I've worked with Steve for 22 years and have had an incredible time developing products at both NeXT and Apple, but at this point, I want to focus less on products and more on science," Serlet said in a press release issued by Apple this morning.
Serlet will be succeeded by Craig Federighi, the current vice president of Mac Software Engineering, who will report directly to Jobs.

Apple may pay more for parts to keep iPad, iPhone flowing
Part suppliers in Taiwan said Wednesday that Apple was willing to allow price hikes if it meant guaranteeing supply for the iPad and iPhone. The company would agree to extra if it meant smoothing out deliveries and guaranteeing stock. With 40 million iPads still believed by Digitimes to be shipping this year, Apple would be using as much as 60 percent of all touchscreen panel supply, putting strain on suppliers that might already be affected by the Japanese earthquake.

Firefox 4 cracks six million downloads, blows past IE9

Monirobo misst Strahlung in Fukushima AKW
Dafür sind Roboter eigentlich gemacht: Menschen gefährliche Tätigkeiten abnehmen. Genau das macht der Monirobo, der nach der Reaktorhavarie im japanischen Fukushima eingesetzt wird, um die aus dem AKW Fukushima Daiichi austretende Radioaktivität zu messen. Original iPads still selling well
The second generation iPad has sold amazingly well for Apple since its launch in early March. The tablet device is difficult to find in retail stores, and Apple's online storefront offers the iPad 2 with a 4-5 week ship time. Also riding this wave of success is the original iPad, whose supply will soon be depleted.
The first generation iPad is available in Apple's clearance website with a $100 price reduction. You've got little triangles coming down either side of the screen on various strings, and your goal as the player is to match those up by drawing lines across the strings in the right places. As you play across the strings, the game creates a sort of arrhythmic, atmospheric music that's pretty fascinating, and the triangles show up faster, making things get pretty complicated.

Amazon has restored API access for the popular Lendle e-book lending service after an outcry from its users. Amazon sent notice to Lendleís developers that it was in violation of its APIís and that as Lendle does not "serve the principal purpose of driving sales of products and services on the Amazon site,î its access had been revoked. Now, a US judge has ordered him to answer questions relating to monopolistic behavior over the iPod and the iTunes Store back in 2004. Gestern das neue Firefox 4, heute eine frische Chrome Beta: Googles Browser hat nun neben dem neuen Logo auch Unterstützung für die HTML5 Spracheingabe API an Bord. Damit können Web Apps zum Beispiel über das Mikro eingesprochenen Text aufschreiben, wofür die Audiodateien zunächst an Sprachserver geschickt werden, der sie übersetzt. iPhoto 11 freezes cured by 10.6.7 update?
Looks like this may have done the trick. The Apple support board has been filled for months with complaints about major freezes in iPhoto 11. The issue many people had, including myself, was that iPhoto would freeze, sometimes for 5 minutes or more.
In fact, your whole Mac would become unresponsive. Then, after a while, things would return to normal. It was happening on some older Intel Mac Pro machines, and some iMacs. The common thread seemed to be Macs that had a NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT graphics card, but some other cards were implicated as well.
It got so bad some people gave up on iPhoto completely, and moved to Aperture or

Apple TV Software erfährt Update auf 4.2.1
Vorhin wurde von Apple das "4.2.1" genannte Update auf iOS 4.3.1 für Apple TV veröffentlicht. Mit dabei sind einige Fixes und Stabilitätsverbesserungen, vor allem aber sollen die Probleme mit Farbe und Bildschirmflackern behoben werden. MacLocks offers lock for new MacBook Airs
The late 2010 revamp of the MacBook Air made it thin, light and very easy to steal. Monirobo measures radiation following nuclear crisis at Japan's Fukushima Daiichi power plant

Japan's space agency considers using rockets with artificial intelligence
The keyword here is obviously "considers," but it looks like Japan's space agency, JAXA, is indeed seriously thinking about using artificial intelligence to improve their rocket launches. As JAXA scientist Yasuhiro Morita explains, as opposed to simply being "automatic" as rockets are today, an "artificially intelligent" rocket would be able to keep watch on its condition, determine the cause of any malfunction, and potentially even fix it itself. Iconfactory working on open-source iOS frameworks for Mac OS X
The Iconfactory is one of the premiere Mac development houses, and as Iconfactory developer Craig Hockenberry posts on his blog, they've just contributed to the developer community "in a big way."
The team has introduced an open source framework called Chameleon, which provides apps designed for iOS an easier porting path to run on Mac OS X as well. Most of the work came from tools built to handle Iconfactory's own apps, but they've released the code to other developers interested in reusing iOS code for Mac OS apps.

ComScore: Microsoft becomes second for online video in one month

Best Buy to carry stock HTC Flyer Wi-Fi in iPad challenge
Best Buy on Tuesday night said it would carry a Wi-Fi version of the HTC Flyer, now better known in the US as the template for the Evo View 4G. IconFactory turns to crowd-funding for 'Chameleon Project'
The IconFactory, well-known in Mac community circles, is working on a project that it has dubbed The Chameleon Project that aims to add, on a very simple level, the ability to recompile iOS apps into full Mac apps with very few changes. Chameleon, which is an open-source project, will act as a substitute for Apple's own UIKit, changing the user interface elements of program to fit the Mac or iOS as needed. The program is a clean-room implementation of the work done by Apple on UIKit and does not use disallowed techniques or private APIs.

Cricket teases CDMA-only Samsung Indulge, Huawei Ascend 2 at CTIA (hands-on)
Regional carrier Cricket surprised at CTIA today by showing off a couple new units that aren't out yet -- but they're in the pipeline for the second quarter, which the company points out is coming "very soon." First up is the Huawei Ascend 2, which -- you guessed it -- would be the follow-on to the original Ascend that the company launched last year. Xperia Play ad rags on iPhone gaming
Sony has released a few tongue-in-cheek Internet ads for its new Xperia Play smartphone (basically, the PSP phone everyone's been waiting for). Apple TV 2 a bit cranky lately? There's a new update today
If you have a 2nd generation Apple TV that has exhibited some flickering or failure to wake from sleep, Apple has just the update you've been waiting for.
Software update 4.2.1 (build 2100) can be had by going to your Settings Menu on your Apple TV, then select General and then Update Software. You can also update your Apple TV by connecting it to your Mac or PC with a Micro USB cable and opening iTunes. (Yes, the Apple TV internal version numbering doesn't align with the overall iOS version, which is 4.3 at the moment.)

Eurotech's Zypad WL1500 wearable computer won't let you forget you're wearing a computer
Eurotech's Zypad series of wearable tablets may all look like props from mid-1990s sci-fi movies, but we can't help but admire them just a little bit for that very reason -- even if we wouldn't be caught dead wearing one. Apple sends cease-and-desist letter to adult 'app store'
Seattle-based MiKandi, an adult-novelties store that has opened a "app store" on the Android platform, have received a cease-and-desist request from Apple asking them to stop using the phrase "the world's first app store for adults" and describing their free Android app as an "app store," Geekwire has reported. The company plans to ignore the request for now, pending the result of Microsoft's challenge to Apple's trademark registration of the phrase "app store." Apple has also formally sued Amazon for using the phrase to describe their (Android-based) app market.

Chinon's Avi Stylix iPod / iPhone docking station packs 7-inch LCD, streams Netflix*
It doesn't scream quality (or maybe the legion of professional stock photographers were all on vacation last week), but the June-bound Avi Stylix does have something that the vast majority of me-too iPod / iPhone docking stations do not: an embedded 7-inch LCD. The usual suspects are also here, including a Dock Connector port, twin two-watt speakers, USB port, SD card slot and a bundled remote. The kicker is its ability to stream Netflix, but there's an obvious catch; you'll need an iPhone or iPod touch with a live internet connection in order to do so. Google brings check-ins to Google Latitude on iPhone, 30 languages to Places
Unsurprisingly, El Goog gifted the Android versions of Latitude and Places with these updates a few weeks back, but now the iOS loyalists are being brought into a similar circle. The search giant has just added check-ins to the iOS version of Google Latitude, with any iDevice using iOS 4 or higher being deemed compatible. In related news, the Applefied build of Google Places is now available in 30 languages, and there's an added 'Saved Places' feature for keeping tabs on your favorite spots. Senators call for police-avoiding app removal
Four Democratic senators, including Minority Leader Harry Reid, have written a letter to Apple asking the company to remove applications from the App Store that alert users to the presence of drunk-driving and other law-enforcement checkpoints, CNet reports. The letter, addressed to Senior Vice President of iPhone Software Scott Forstall, does not name specific applications but refers to them as "harmful to public safety."

Google's deal for book digitization rejected by judge, Books plans sent back to drawing board
It's taken a long, long time to fully consider Google's proposed $125 million settlement with publishers and authors of out-of-print works, but now the ruling has been handed down and it's not the one the Mountain View team wanted. Circuit Judge Chin, who had preliminarily approved the deal back in November 2009, has returned with the new conclusion that actually it goes "too far" in Google's favor. Boeing's biggest jet takes flight, promises lowest 'seat mile' cost of any commercial airliner
Today Boeing took a huge -- both literally and figuratively -- step in the development of the largest commercial jet in its history when the 747-8 took to the skies for the first time.
