Barnes & Noble licenses Alex e-reader patents from Spring Design, settles dispute
You can now tack on one more footnote to the end of the Alex e-reader story -- Spring Design has finally settled its longstanding dispute with Barnes & Noble, and granted the company a "non-exclusive, paid-up royalty free license for the entire portfolio of Spring Design patents and patent applications." Terms of the settlement are otherwise confidential, with Barnes & Noble only saying that it is "pleased to add Spring Design's patents and patent applications as a complementary addition to our rapidly growing digital portfolio." Apple AV-Adapter für iPad 2 auch für iPhone 4 und iPod

Wer sich die Frage stellt, ob er wirklich etwas mit dem neuen AV-Adapter von Apple (der immerhin 39 Dollar kostet, deutsche Preise stehen noch nicht fest, aber wir gehen von 39 Euro aus) anfangen kann: er funktioniert auch mit dem iPhone 4 als Video-Ausgang und mit dem iPod Touch der letzten Generation. Auf den beiden allerdings nur mit 720p, nicht mit 1080p wie auf dem iPad 2, auf dem allerdings die Videoausgabe auch auf 720p limitiert ist. Darüber hinaus lässt sich neben HDMI auch ein zweites Kabel anschliessen, damit man während dem Videobeamen auch noch gleichzeitig sein iPad/iPhone/iPod aufladen kann.

AT&T: iPhone converts to Verizon 'within our expectations'
AT&T wireless chief Ralph de la Vega at the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media and Telecommunications conference in San Francisco today said the company wasn't alarmed at the impact of the Verizon iPhone 4 launch. He declined to get into numbers but said the number of AT&T subscribers jumping ship for Verizon was "within our expectations." The carrier hadn't "seen any surprises" in the first two weeks, de la Vega said, although he admitted that numbers were in flux and that the trend might change later.

Nintendo GDC keynote roundup: Netflix and free AT&T WiFi coming to 3DS this summer!
We survived the keynote address here at GDC 2011, where Satoru Iwata and Reggie Fils-Aime just got done revealing a veritable cornucopia of info about the 3DS. iPad 2 arrives at the FCC
Right on cue, the three radio variants of the iPad 2 -- that's the WiFi A1395, GSM A1396, and CDMA A1397 -- have arrived at the FCC's labs for stringent testing. We're sure Uncle Sam's testers will stay on task checking up on RF interference and not just spend their time melting faces with Photo Booth, but we understand the temptation.

iOS 5, upgraded MobileMe go missing from iPad 2 event
Several major predictions failed to come true during today's iPad 2 event. Perhaps the most significant of these was an upgraded MobileMe; the service was expected to become free, and gain some sort of media locker allowing remote access of iTunes content. Strong evidence came from Apple itself, as the company discontinued boxed copies of MobileMe and indeed removed any way of paying. Apple, Microsoft still sparring over "App Store" trademark
Earlier this year, Microsoft filed a complaint with the Patent and Trademark office against Apple over the Cupertino company's attempt to trademark the term "App Store". In case you're wondering whether Apple's forthcoming Digital AV Adapter is worth your $39, you might be pleased to know that said HDMI dongle is also compatible with the latest crop of iOS devices before the iPad 2. This includes the iPhone 4, fourth-generation iPod touch, and even the first-generation iPad. Alas, both movies and slideshows will still be capped at 720p output from these older devices, whereas the iPad 2 goes a little further with screen mirroring of up to 1080p -- we're guessing the beastly 1GHz dual-core A5 chip is what makes the difference here. But hey, we're only a few months away from finding out if the next iPhone will also get some 1080p love, so no pressure

iPad 2: Das erste Hands-On Video

In den USA hatte unsere Crew mehr Glück mit dem Hands-On und sind völlig hin und weg von der Geschwindigkeit des iPad 2 sowohl im Browser als auch in PhotoBooth und iBooks. Und auch das Gewicht und die Dicke (Dünne?) macht Eindruck, denn es fühlt sich jetzt mehr an wie ein Magazin, während es vorher eher Buchcharakter hatte. Aber erst mal zum Video nach dem Break.

Apple bringt zweite iPad Generation
Apple hat heute Abend das iPad 2 vorgestellt. Das neue Apple Tablet wurde nicht nur leichter, sondern auch merklich dünner — um 33% dünner, um genau zu sein: statt bisher über 12 Millimeter ist es neu nur noch 8.8 Millimeter dünner. Das Apple Tablet ist damit sogar dünner als das iPhone 4. Das iPad 2 hat einen neuen A5-Prozessor mit Dual-Core und satter neuer Grafik spendiert erhalten — die CPU soll zwei mal schneller sein als jene vom iPad, die Grafik gar neun mal schneller. Neben einer Kamera auf der Rückseite erhält das neue iPad auch eine Kamera auf der Vorderseite um FaceTime auch auf dem iPad nutzen zu können. Trotz kleinerem Formfaktor und viel schnellerer Performance: die gute Akkuleistung des ersten iPads konnten auch bei der zweiten Generation eingehalten werden. 10 Stunden hält der Akku, Standby sogar ein Monat. Das Gerät ist in Schwarz und Weiss erhältlich (beide von Tag 1 an) und wurden im Preis — trotz neuer Funktionen — nicht angepasst, offizielle internationale Preise sollen aber noch folgen.

Apple has previewed new iPad versions of several iOS apps, including iWork titles iMovie and GarageBand, along with several apps that take advantage of the dual-camera configuration of the iPad 2. So wie es aussieht hat diese iMovie-Variante einen Präzisionseditor, Achtspuraufnahme für Audio, AirPlay auf das AppleTV, ein paar neue Themes und die Möglichkeit, Videos in HD zu sharen. Zu haben ab dem 11.März für 4,99 Dollar. Auch GarageBand gibt es dann zum gleichen Preis für das iPad 2, es kommt mit diversen Touch-Instrumenten, Gitarren-Amps und Effekten, Achtspuraufnahme, mehr als 250 Loops und der Möglichkeit, die AAC-Files per Email zu verschicken. Today at the live event, which our own Medical Leave Steve showed up to host, we got a peek at the pending version of iOS 4.3. This will be out on March 11, along with the next generation iPad, also announced at today's event. At first glance, the important differences depend on which iThing you're actually running it on.
First and foremost to iPad owners is the following: A rollback of the switch function! Now you will get the option of what that little flippy switch controls: orientation lock or mute.

News: U.S. iPad sales start March 11, 5:00 pm, no pre-orders

Serverausfall während des Live-Tickers
Bei Apple-Events greifen regelmäßig so viele Besucher auf Newsseiten zu, dass die Server der Last kaum standhalten können. Apple Store is back up, gives more detail on the digital adapter
The Apple Store is back online and features information for the iPad 2, along with the iPad Smart Cover and the Apple Digital AV adapter, which also supports video output from the original iPad, iPhone 4 and current-generation iPhone 4, but mirroring will only be on the iPad 2. Video out supports up to 1080p for the iPad 2 and 720p for the original iPad, iPhone 4 and iPod Touch.

Apple puts original iPads on sale -- now start at $399
Steve Jobs told us earlier that the new iPad pricing will stay exactly the same as the original iPad -- meaning a base price of $499 for the 16GB WiFi version. Well, even though you can't get an iPad 2 until March 11th, Apple is already putting the original models on sale. Right now you can grab up that base model, 16GB WiFi only iPad for $399, with prices ranging up to $729 for the 64GB 3G model. iPad 2 first hands-on!
Well there you have it folks -- the absurdly thin new iPad 2. We just got our hands all over the next greatest tablet from Apple and it's very much the same, save for that new body. There's no question that the industrial design is top notch, and we did notice some speedier behavior when jumping around -- but the core OS remains unchanged, so this won't be a major shock. Apple will update iMovie app to support iPad
It's no surprise with the new cameras on the iPad that Apple has also introduced a version of iMovie tailored to the iPad, but is a universal update that includes the iPhone.
Features include a precision editor, multitrack audio recording with more than 50 sound effects, new themes, the use of AirPlay to stream to the Apple TV, sharing HDs and the ability to upload to YouTube, Facebook, Vimeo and CNN iReport from the app, in addition to a send to iTunes button.

iPad 2 cameras set for FaceTime
Now that the new iPad is confirmed to have both a front and a rear-facing camera, the iPad joins the iPhone, iPod touch and Mac as a FaceTime-capable device.
The new iPad cameras feature VGA quality video at 30 frames per second, which is the main camera people will use during FaceTime chats, but presumably the iPad 2 FaceTime program, like the iPhone 4 FaceTime, will support camera rotation. The rear camera on the iPad features HD-quality video at 720p resolution.

Eben hat Apple das iPad 2 vorgestellt. Es kommt mit A5-Dual-Core Chip, Kameras vorne und hinten und die neue CPU soll doppelt so schnell sein, die Grafikleistung soll sogar neunmal so gut sein. Die Batterielaufzeit ist aber trotz schnellerem Prozessor genauso lang, ebenso das Preismodell für alle Varianten (leider war das bei Amazon dann wohl doch ein Platzhalter). Apple announces Smart Covers for iPad
After the lackluster reception to the original Apple iPad case, a new product called Smart Covers was introduced alongside the iPad 2 today.
The case will come in five colors in both polyurethane and leather -- the poly costing $39 and the leather $69. The cover is more like a cover flap that leaves the back of the iPad exposed. It's held on by magnets, which are said to help auto-align the cover with the iPad. It has a microfiber lining that will clean the screen.

Apple introduces iPad 2 with thinner, faster design
Apple today introduced the iPad 2, its second-generation tablet. The device uses a new dual-core processor called the A5, said to be twice as fast as the A4. Graphics processing is said to be nine times faster, and the device has both front- and rear-facing cameras. The device is a third thinner than the original iPad at 8.8mm versus 13.4mm, which Apple notes is also thinner than the iPhone 4. This contributes to a smaller weight at 1.3 pounds next to 1.5.

After much fanfare, Apple officially announced the iPad 2 today with a new dual-core processor called the A5 and both rear and front-facing cameras. It is up to two times faster than the A4 chip and nine times faster graphics with the same amount of power consumption. The iPad 2 also has the gyroscope found in the iPhone 4 and the current-generation iPod Touch.

Steve Jobs makes surprise appearance at Yerba Buena Event
Weeks after he took a leave of absence from the company, Apple CEO Steve Jobs made a surprise appearance on stage at Apple's March 2nd event in San Francisco. 100 million books downloaded from iBooks, Random House titles added
Apple's kicking off the iPad 2 event with some iBooks announcements. The first thing you need to know is that 100 million books have been downloaded to date from the company's bookstore. That's a lot of tomes, and there are more coming. The second big piece of news? Random House is bringing an additional 17,000 titles to the store. Apple ships 100 millionth iPhone, 15 million iPads sold in 2010
Apple's been having one record quarter after another lately, so it shouldn't come as much of a surprise that it still has plenty more to boast about when it comes to sales. At it's event today, Steve Jobs revealed that the company recently shipped it's 100 millionth iPhone, and that it sold 15 million iPads in 2010 -- a figure he points out is "more than every tablet PC ever sold." Motorola Xoom returns to PC World UK, this time at £500, promises April 9th delivery
Maybe PC World is trying to sneak the bad news in under the cover of the iPad 2 launch, but it's returned Motorola's Xoom tablet to its pre-order systems with a far less pleasing price than before: £500. Supposed iPad 2 photos from China
Yesterday, the Chinese website DGtle posted photos of what they claim to be the next-generation of iPad [original Chinese post]. The photos look reasonably legitimate and depict dual cameras, larger speakers, and a thinner, more rounded design reminiscent of the latest iPod touch. Notably missing are a standard USB port, SD card slot, and integrated mini-fridge.
Although the photos appear to be real, it's possible this is a prototype or knock-off and not the final product we anticipate hearing more about in a matter of minutes.
And, of course, the photos tell us little about the guts of the device.

The iBookstore gets Random House books
We posted that Random House had made a deal to finally get their books in the iBookstore. Well, it's in the process of happening. This morning the Random House published-Millenium Trilogy by Steig Larsson is available for purchase and the first two books are even at decent prices.
Now we'll have to wait and see if Random House's other imprints, and there are around twenty-five of them, make it there as well. My guess is that they will. Maybe there's hope for the iBookstore after all.
By the way, along with the Apple store, the Random House site is down as well. I have a feeling this will come up at today's event.

Statt ChaCha nun ChaChaCha: da ChaCha auf Spanisch wohl ein abfälliger Begriff für Mädchen ist, wird HTCs ChaCha in Spanien als ChaChaCha auf den Markt kommen. Erinnert uns ein bisschen an den Mitsubishi Pajero (das wollen wir jetzt mal nicht übersetzen, aber ihr könnt ja mal bei Leo nachschauen), der aber in Spanien noch immer so heisst. Wäre natürlich auch möglich gewesen, mal das eine oder andere Lexikon zu Rate zu ziehen, bevor man aus dem internen Codenamen einen Produktnamen macht (und angesichts der Klage der mobilen Suchmaschine ChaCha vor ein paar Tagen vielleicht auch die Namensrechte abcheckt), aber so kanns gehen.

Windows 8 UI may clone Spaces, add window 'leaps'
The discovery of Microsoft India researcher Manoj Manduva's portfolio has given clues as to some of the interface features that may show in Windows 8. The proposal would include multiple virtual desktops that would include an "advanced desktop mode." iSuppli puts Xoom raw parts cost at least $40 above iPad
iSuppli in a full version of its cost teardown for the Motorola Xoom claimed it was even more expensive than thought. It put the pure cost of the Android 3.0 tablet at $359.92, or nearly $40 more than the $320 estimated for a 3G iPad with the same 32GB of memory. The actual gap was likely to be wider still as the iPad cost came from April 2010 and would have decreased for Apple over the past year.

Barnes & Noble settles with Spring Design, pays lump royalty
Barnes & Noble on Wednesday decided to reach a settlement with Spring Design and avoid a trial over claims it stole the design of the Alex e-reader for the Nook. Digitimes is reporting that, according to an iPad supply chain source, Apple intends to ship 6 to 6.5 million iPads in the first quarter of 2011 (ending at the end of March). According to the source, 300,000 to 400,000 of those will be iPad 2s.
Digitimes' source also points out that Apple had about 1 to 1.5 million iPads in the inventory channel in January, and since Apple only ordered about 2 million iPads in January, it surmises that Apple is already planning to phase out the first generation iPad in favor of the iPad 2, of which we can assume production will be significantly increased in March.
However, if anything goes wrong with the production channel for the iPad 2, Digitimes points out that there could be a shortage of iPads because there will be no

How far we've come from the heady days when Microsoft was willing to splash $44 billion to acquire Yahoo! Twitter officially suspends parody @CeoSteveJobs account
As reported by Geeksmack last night, Twitter has suspended the @ceoSteveJobs account. We mentioned back in January that a new law in California prohibiting online impersonations put the account at risk, and Twitter had asked for changes. Apparently the description "More than meets the i. As you should expect from a parody account" wasn't enough to prevent Twitter from shutting the parody account down.

Cox breaks return cable upload record with Motorola's help, subscribers still waiting for their cable guy
There's a somewhat narrow category here, but Cox Communications just set a benchmark for bandwidth on its Las Vegas network thanks to an RX48 DOCSIS 3.0 receiver from Motorola. iPad: 6 Millionen Geräte im ersten Quartal 2011, 40 Millionen im Kalenderjahr

Some Random House books are beginning to appear in the US iBookstore, a report says. Google adding web-based in-app payments, probably some time in May
It's not enough that you'll soon be able to make in-app purchases on Android, Google wants to give you an outlet for your app spending online as well. The search giant is hard at work turning last year's acquisition of Jambool and its Social Gold software into a web-based in-app payments platform it can call its own. Jambool's proprietors have word that Google's system is now in beta, which has led it to close new signups for the Social Gold offering, ahead of halting payment processing entirely on May 31st. GDC 2011: Halfbrick's Machine Gun Jetpack
Halfbrick Studios is one of my favorite developers on iOS. While they've released games on other platforms before (including the PS3 and the Nintendo DS), here at GDC 2011, they told me that "iOS development is always our focus." Sony on Wednesday revamped its AV receivers for 2011 with four seven-channel models that lean heavily on the purely digital side of media. Olympus SZ-30MR and SZ-20 cameras record 1080p video; Tough TG-810 is 'crushproof'
Olympus just loosed a trio of compact cameras. Let's start big with the €329 SZ-30MR. According to Olympus, the 30MR packs a backlit CMOS sensor with 24x (25-600mm) optical zoom and Dual Engine TruePic III+ processing. Apple aims for 6.5m iPads in Q1, just 400K iPad 2s at first
A rumor from parts suppliers put Apple's iPad production high but suggested that a relatively small number of those would be the iPad 2 being unveiled today. Shipments would reportedly float between six million and 6.5 million for the quarter ending in March, but only 300,000 to 400,000 of the new model. With no more than two million original iPads being ordered in January and 1.5 million in the channel, however, Digitimes' rumor left at least 2.5 million of the new iPad shipping in March, suggesting supply would ramp up quickly.

iPad 2 specs leaked by Amazon Germany, 1.2GHz, Thunderbolt?
An eagle-eyed German reader has sent Your Daily Apple a screen shot from a since removed Amazon Germany page that appears to list the specifications of the next-generation iPad due to be introduced later today. The site listed the Apple iPad 2 with a 1.2Ghz processor, Wi-Fi, 3G, Thunderbolt, Camera, and Bluetooth, all of which have been deemed either likely or possible inclusions for the device. Further, the listing also includes an estimated March 17 release date, corroborating recent reports that the device would be ready to ship almost immediately.

Survey from PopCap shows increase in mobile gaming
A new survey from PopCap shows a third of all mobile phone users in the UK and USA have played a game in the past month, and a quarter have played in the past week. Before the introduction of smartphones like the iPhone, game-playing usage hovered around 5 percent. The increase has come due to the much easier availability of games in Apple's App Store, which outsold all similar online stores several times over last year, and the huge popularity of games like Angry Birds.

Google spikes 21 malicious apps with big download counts from the Market
We're sure that the debate of a carefully controlled and curated environment like Apple's App Store versus a free-for-all like the Android Market will rage on for years to come, but here's something to chew on: Google just removed some 21 apps from the Market in the last day from a publisher going by Myournet for doing all sorts of naughty things to your device. Offenses include attempting to root your phone, uploading phone information (including IMEI) to who-knows-where, and -- most egregiously -- adding a backdoor that allows additional code to be pulled down and executed.
At least some of the apps are pirated versions of existing apps

Zotac entwickelt GTX 560 Ti für sechs Monitore

Shocker! UK regulator finds average broadband speeds are 'less than half' those advertised
You don't have to go to the lengths of compiling a statistical project to know that advertised and actual broadband speeds are two pretty disparate entities, but it does help. Ofcom, the UK communications regulator, recently took a thorough look at 11 broadband packages, which collectively account for over 90 percent of all British broadband subscriptions, and found that actual download throughput was less than half (only 45 percent) of the advertised "up to" speed. Gründe weiss man nicht, aber die Ausfälligkeiten des Steve Jobs-Fakes auf Twitter sind aber vorerst beendet. Panzer nachbauen und sich mit dem Namen "Stahllegende" schmücken - der chinesische Designer, der dieses Monster aus fünf Tonnen Altmetall zusammengeschweißt hat, mag es offensichtlich groß. Fabricate Yourself: Kinect als 3D-Fotoautomat (Video)

Fabricate Yourself heisst dieser Kinect-Hack von Karl Willis, der die Kamera als ziemlich groben und rudimentären 3D-Scanner nutzt. Vorgestellt auf der Tangible, Embedded and Embodied Interaction Conference (TEI) erlaubt er den Benutzern, vor der Kamera so lange rumzuposen, bis sie zufrieden sind, danach wird das Ergebnis in ein STL-File gewandelt und lässt sich ausdrucken. Braucht vielleicht noch ein bisschen mehr Auflösung (Farbe wär auch nicht schlecht) ist aber auf jeden Fall ein Publikumsmagnet auf der TEI gewesen. Video nach dem Break.

Under Armour E39 bringt mehr Sensoren und Digitalisierung an die Sportlerbrust
Mehr Technik für Hochleistungssportler. Wo es um Millionen geht, dort darf auch gerne mal Geld in technologische T-Shirt-Entwicklungen gesteckt werden. Das Under Armour E39 ist solch ein Sporthemd, wobei das "E" für elektrisch steht. Der Sensor ist mit einem triaxialem Accelerometer, einem Prozessor und 2GB Speicher ausgestattet. Zusätzlich können Atmung und Puls überwacht werden. Ein Softwaresystem von Zephyr trackt dazu die individuellen Bewegungen des Sportlers. Yay! Robovie PC gewinnt den ersten Robotermarathon der Welt in Osaka

Letzten Freitag gab es in Osaka den ersten Roboter-Marathon der Welt. Exakt, ein ganzer Marathon mit der olympischen Länge von 42,195km. Der Gewinner dieses Rennens ist der Robovie PC, ein 40cm großer Humanoid, der die Strecke in sage und schreibe 55 Stunden überwinden konnte. Das machte aus diesem Sportevent auch eine langwierige Wochenendangelegenheit. Dazu mussten die Bots eine 100m-Strecke 421 mal auf und ab laufen plus weiteren 95cm. Bauteilrätseln: Kommt das iPad 2 auch in weiß?

Die Sache mit dem weißen iPhone 4 war ja ein großes Possenspiel und man hätte vermutet, dass Apple zukünftig die Finger vom Weißmacherspiel lässt. Aber nun ist dieses Bauteil in Shenzen aufgetaucht, das sehr gut auf das iPad 2 passen würde und eben in Weiß kommt. Das lässt die Spekulationen natürlich hochkochen. Wird es am 2. Sich zu dem ganzen anderen Foto-Equipment noch einen Ringblitz zuzulegen, ist für Amateurfotografen häufig eine Preisfrage. Klar gab es einige Homemade-Versionen, aber dieser Ring Flash Adapter kommt mit einem Kampfpreis von 40$ (ca. 29 Euro) und wird einfach auf einen bereits vorhandenen Blitz aufgesetzt. Mit einem Cyber Gadget CodeFreak Game Capture Utility ist es einem YouTube-User gelungen nicht nur Kopien von Spielen, sondern auch Homebrew-Software auf Nintendos gerade erst erschienener 3DS laufen zu lassen. CeBIT: MSI WindPad 100A kommt mit Tegra 2 und Honeycomb

Seit einem guten halben Jahr zeigt MSI sein 10-Zoll Android Tablet nun herum, jetzt gibt es endlich ein paar konkrete Specs, über die man aber auch nicht meckern kann. Das WindPad 100A auf der CeBIT ist wie so viele andere seiner Art mit einem Tegra 2 ausgestattet und soll mit Honeycomb kommen, sobald es im späten Mai / Anfang Juni erscheint. Auf der CeBIT lief es noch mit Android 2.x und die Hardware sah genauso aus wie auf der CES. Streetview Zombie Apocalypse: Gaming in der Google-Welt

Dieses Spielprinzip ist wirklich vielversprechend: Mit Streetview Zombie Apocalypse wird der Google-Dienst zum Setting einer lustigen Zombie-Verfolgungsjagd - wobei der Spieler vorerst nur der Gejagte ist, aber das Konzept ist halt auch noch im Experimentalstadium. Am besten läuft die Zombie-Apocalypse mit Chrome, die Bedienung ist kinderleicht: Adresse und Schwierigkeitsgrad wählen und dann mit den Cursor-Tasten Fersengeld geben, sonst erwischen einen die durch rote Markierungspfeile dargestellten Zombies und fahren Achterbahn mit ihrem Opfer. Intel beschleunigt SSDs mit der 510 Serie auf bis zu 500 MByte/s

Intel hat eine neue SSD-Serie vorgestellt, die auf den prosaischen Namen 510 hört und Lesegeschwindigkeiten von bis zu 500 MByte/s und Schreibgeschwindigkeiten von bis zu 315 MByte/s erreicht. Hinter diesem Extra-Turbo steckt die 6 GBit/S SATA-Schnittstelle und wer sowas haben will muss nicht mal allzuviel Geduld mitbringen, im Großhandel sind die 510er SSDs nämlich "ab sofort" zu haben: Im 1000er Pack kostet die 256-GB-Version 584 Dollar, das 128-GB-Modell mit 450 bzw. 210 MByte/s beim Lesen/Schreiben ist dann für 284 Dollar zu haben.

Die Waschmaschine für Hund und Katze heißt gemeinerweise Joyful Honda
Hunde und Katzen werden ja dem Klischee nach nicht gerne gebadet. Keine Chance auf Zicken haben die Vierbeiner allerdings in der Tierwaschmaschine mit dem etwas fiesen Namen Joyful Honda, die natürlich in Japan im Einsatz ist. Dass es sich dabei nicht um eine Tierquälmaschine handelt, hat allerdings ein übermütiger Japaner bewiesen, der nach einer Reinigung in Joyful Honda immer noch gelacht hat. Der Unterschied zwischen dem ASUS Eee PC 1015 und dem 1015B besteht genau genomen nur im Prozessor. AMD Fusion. Es gibt ihn auf der CeBIT in schwarz und weiß und mit 1,2GHz Single, und 1GHz Dual-Core Prozessor. Beide kommen mit einer ATI Radeon HD 6250 mit 1GB RAM und Bluetooth 3.0 nebst WiFi 802.11b/g/n. Das Versprechen: 1080p Video. Der 1215B kommt mit ähnlichen Spezifikationen aber größerem 12,1 WXGA LCD, optionalem 1,6GHz AMD E350 und bis zu 4GB RAM. Road to Mac OS X 10.7 Lion: «Resume»
Der Mozilla-Browser Firefox kennt diese Funktion bereits seit längerem — andere Browser haben es ihm mittlerweile nachgeahmt: Der Benutzer schliesst das Programm obwohl noch Fenster mit verschiedenen Tabs offen sind, öffnet der Benutzer das Programm zu einem späteren Zeitpunkt wieder, kann die Surf-Session wieder genau so geöffnet werden, wie sie vorhin geschlossen wurde, inklusive allen Fenstern und den darin enthaltenen, geöffneten Tabs. Eine ähnliche Funktion gibt es seit iOS 4 in iApps mit Multitasking-Unterstützung — ein Multitasking-Ansatz von iOS ist es, eine App genau dort wieder weiterlaufen lassen zu können, wo sie geschlossen wurde.
In Lion soll dieses Feature unter dem Namen «Resume» nun auch in Mac OS X Einzug halten. Apps, die «Resume» unterstützen, können nach dem Beenden genau wieder im gleichen Zustand gestartet werden — mit allen Fenstern und Einstellungen von der vorhergehenden ‘Sitzung’.
«Resume» geht sogar soweit, dass bei einem System-Neustart auch alle zuvor geöffneten Programme wieder

Joint Venture may "grandfather in" older machines
Apple's not-yet-announced small business support plan, titled Joint Venture, will be offered to companies buying new Macs -- but may also be open to also supported older machines as well, a source tells The Wall Street Journal. Road to Mac OS X 10.7 Lion: «Versions»
Entwickler kennen die Versionierung von Dateien schon länger — zum Beispiel durch Tools wie svn oder git. In Mac OS X Lion hält nun eine ins System integrierte Versionskontrolle einzug. «Versions» erstellt jedesmal, wenn eine Datei geöffnet wird sowie jede Stunde wenn die Datei bearbeitet wird eine Kopie des aktuellen Standes der Datei. Wenn man zu einer früheren Version der Datei oder einem früheren Zustand eines einzelnen Teils einer Datei zurückspringen möchte, wird Versions aktiviert und man kann — visuell ähnlich aufgebaut wie Time Machine — durch die verschiedenen Versionen hin und her navigieren und eine alte Version komplett durch nur einen Klick wiederherstellen. Einzelne Abschnitte oder Teile einer Datei können aber auch mittels einfachem Copy and Paste aus einer früheren Version in die Aktuelle übernommen werden.

Twitter on Tuesday suspended a parody account under the name @ceoSteveJobs as being in violation of Twitter rules regarding parody accounts, and after Apple itself formally complained in January. Road to Mac OS X 10.7 Lion: «Auto Save»
Was bei TextEdit in Snow Leopard bereits seit letztem Jahr möglich ist, wird mit Mac OS X Lion wohl Einzug in viele weitere Applikationen halten: die automatische Speicherung. TextEdit in Snow Leopard legt in einem selbst definierbaren Interval eine «automatische Sicherung» an, dabei wird ein zusätzliches, temporäres Dokument erstellt, welches beim manuellen Speichern der Original-Datei wieder gelöscht wird. In Lion speichert die automatischen Sicherungen direkt im Original-File, es werden also keine zusätzlichen Files angelegt — dadurch soll Speicherplatz gespart werden. Es steht auch eine Lock-Funktion zur Verfügung, durch diese ungewollte Änderungen vor der automatischen Speicherung ausgeschlossen werden können — diese Funktion aktiviert sich zudem automatisch nach zwei Wochen nach der letzten Änderung. Eine weitere Funktion erlaubt das zurückspringen zur zuletzt manuell gespeicherten Version, d.h. zu jener Version, in der man die Datei zum Beispiel geöffnet hat.

Financial Times may quit iPad without reader details
The Financial Times' publisher Pearson late Monday warned it might leave the iPad and iPhone if it couldn't get reader information. CEO Marjorie Scardino was adamant on an investors' call that Pearson was "still talking" to Apple but was concerned that its iTunes subscription rules wouldn't let her newspaper get demographic information to target ads. If it couldn't get what it wanted, it might jump ship to Android tablets and other platforms where that information was readily available.

GDC 2011: The future of Imangi Studios
The husband and wife team of Keith Shepherd and Natalia Luckyanova make up Imangi Studios, the iPhone developer behind line-drawing hit Harbor Master. Another Infinity Blade update coming soon
Joystiq reports that Infinity Blade, the hit iOS game running on the Unreal 3 engine, is due for an update "very, very soon" according to Chair co-founder Donald Mustard. Following its release last December, Infinity Blade received a minor update just two weeks later featuring a new enemy and a handful of new items. $200 'Mini' NMR detects cancer faster and cheaper than full biopsies
Detecting cancer could be on the verge of getting a whole lot cheaper -- and better. Researchers at Harvard and MIT have come up with a device that, using a needle to get a tissue sample, has achieve 96 percent accuracy despite having a cost to produce of just $200. It's called a mini NMR (for nuclear magnet resonance) and also gives results in under an hour, giving the good or bad news on a smartphone display. The cost, simplicity, and portability could make it much easier for cancer to be caught and diagnosed early, but naturally it still has a good bit of testing left before it'll be ready for prime time.

EverNote bumps iOS version to 4.0, revamps UI
Popular multi-media note-taking and cloud-storage app EverNote, a staple of the iOS App Store, today went live with the all-new v4 which features a revamped user interface, a new home screen, Snippets View, the ability to simultaneously type notes as well as record audio, and many other features all based on user feedback that pointed back to one significant idea: moving around the app, creating things and finding things should be easier, said the company on its blog announcing the new version.

TiVo iPad app to get Series 3 support 'soon'
A notice in the TiVo for iPad app has validated hopes that it might come to Series 3 DVRs. A quiet update to the app on Monday (free, App Store) is now producing a pop-up message that tells users that full support is coming for set-top boxes provided by cable providers RCN and Suddenlink as well as "limited support" for the Series 3 and related TiVo HD. The update is "coming soon," it said.

Oddsmakers make book on the iPad 2 event
Just before every Apple event, we get the word from Tony Harvey and the oddsmakers at Bookmaker.com. This time, they've set the odds on what to expect from the iPad 2. While these guys aren't tech pundits -- they're high stakes online sports bookies -- we thought you'd like to see what they came up with in terms of odds on various features for the upcoming iPad.
In each case on the table (click "read more" to see it), the +/- indicates the return on the wager, while the percentage is the likelihood that response will occur. I'm not a betting man, but I indicated my selection by putting it in green on the table. In all cases, I pretty much agreed with the oddsmakers. Microsoft Windows Embedded Compact 7 now available, may or may not make its way to tablets
Back in June at Computex, Microsoft announced the successor to Windows CE -- Windows Embedded Compact 7 - and it's finally hitting the general availability mark today. The guys in Redmond posted a 180-day trial of the final WEC7 bits yesterday, and while it is unclear when it was released to manufacturers, ZDNet's Mary Jo Foley notes that the digital signature on the bits is February 19th. Design project paints city's WiFi networks with light
We've seen WiFi detectors used for various DIY projects before, but none quite like this rather ambitious project cooked up by Norwegian designers Timo Armall, Jørn Knutsen, and Einar Sneve Martinussen. Study: 'death grip' hits all phones, cases don't always help
The University of Bristol in a study issued Monday simultaneously supported and criticized Apple in arguments over the affects of the human hand on phone antenna. It saw a "100-fold" drop in the reception a signal on a test device's antenna when covered either by a thumb or by a material simulating the effect. AMD downplays Thunderbolt, claims it steals video bandwidth
AMD in a comment hoped to minimize the impact of Intel's Thunderbolt technology. It argued that the 10Gbps bandwidth wasn't necessarily enough for video as a DisplayPort connector could handle up to 17Gbps, limiting what a screen attached in a Thunderbolt chain could manage. Any other devices in the link could further reduce the bandwidth and would rule out multiple displays, conveniently including multi-screen arrays using its own Eyefinity technology.

As Apple's March 2nd iPad announcement draws near, the Interwebs are alive with rumors. In no particular order, here's the buzz that we're seeing flick across our in-boxes today.
Will Apple produce a White iPad? That's what the 9 to 5 Mac blog thinks might happen, based on iPad parts they "acquired" early.
The Wall Street Journal suggests that the iPad 2 will be more streamlined than its big brother, with a thinner and lighter build. They're also expecting models for both AT&T and Verizon data plans.

Random House switches e-book pricing models, clears way for entrance into iBookstore
Well, it looks like the last major holdout from Apple's iBookstore could soon be joining its rivals on iOS devices -- Random House announced today that it's abandoning its current pricing model for e-books in favor of the so-called "agency pricing" that Apple insists on. That model requires publishers to set the retail prices of their books with the bookseller getting a 30 percent cut of each sale -- as opposed to the traditional wholesale model that lets retailers set the price of books and even sell them at a loss (as Amazon has done in the past). Maya 2012 to bring viewport, sequencing upgrades
