Consumer Reports Digital Edition for iPad not recommended

Consumer Reports has kind of a spotty reputation with Apple fans. They've liked most Mac desktops and laptops, but the magazine famously dissed the AT&T iPhone 4 and just last week trashed the Verizon iPhone 4 as well. Verizon to drop unlimited iPhone data plans

During the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media and Telecom conference on Tuesday, Verizon CFO Fran Shammo confirmed that Verizon will be moving to tiered data plans as early as this summer. Comcast releases Xfinity TV remote control app for Android devices

After debuting on the iPad and iPhone, Comcast has finally released its Xfinity TV app for Android. Verizon to drop unlimited data in time for iPhone 5

Verizon CFO Fran Shammo said on Tuesday that the carrier's unlimited data plans could come to an end in the summer. She mentioned during a that Verizon would "probably do that in the mid-summer time frame" and implied strongly that it would be timed for the expected summer launch of the iPhone 5. There could be some profit margin "lumpiness" in future quarters as Verizon took on the subsidies for a large number of iPhones, Shammo said.

Apple says Microsoft hypocritical in App Store trademark war

Apple stepped up its language late Monday in a push to have a court ignore Microsoft's motion to dismiss an Apple filing for an App Store trademark. The iPhone creator directly accused Microsoft of hypocrisy and said it was trying to use the same argument it had rejected during the original fight over the Windows name. If Microsoft could argue that Windows was a proprietary name based on how most people used the term, it couldn't object when more people associated the App Store name with the iOS and now the Mac, Apple explained in the filing.

Former Apple employee convicted of money laundering, wire fraud

Former Apple employee Paul Devine pleaded guilty to 23 charges of wire fraud, conspiracy and money laundering following his arrest last August. Devine, a global supply manager, was accused of accepting kickbacks from six Asian suppliers. In return for cash and gifts, he supplied these suppliers with confidential information that gave them an advantage when negotiating lucrative contracts with Apple. Devine allegedly collected over US$1 million in this kickback scheme and deposited the money in various foreign and U.S. banks using accounts setup in his name and his wife's name. Rovio's Peter Vesterbacka hosted an entertaining panel on the first day of the 2011 Game Developers Conference here in San Francisco. Motorola Xoomís back in contention with Wi-Fi only pricing

The Motorola Xoom has had its UK pricing announced by retailer PC World, which has listed the device for the US equivalent pricing of $730 on pre-oder. This is around $100 less than the equivalent pricing for the 32GB Wi-Fi-only iPad in the UK. It also puts it on par with the Wi-Fi-only entry-level iPad 16GB while offering an additional 16GB of memory for a similar price. And, at least until this Wednesday, it also offers superior processing and graphics performance over the iPad.

Prepaid iPhone in the works? Tim Cook's comments paraphrased and interpreted

Apple's Chief Operating Officer, Tim Cook, recently spoke with Bernstein Research analyst Toni Sacconaghi about Apple's possible plans to introduce cheaper or prepaid iPhones. While Sacconaghi didn't give any exact quotes, he paraphrased a few of Cook's thoughts. "Tim stopped short of explicitly stating that Apple would pursue a lower price iPhone," Sacconaghi said, but Cook said Apple is "working hard to 'figure out' the prepaid market." According to Sacconaghi, Cook and Apple want to dispel the impression that Apple's products are "just for the rich." Cook also called China "a classic prepaid market," which certainly indicates Apple is interested in pursuing that market.

Road to Mac OS X 10.7 Lion: «Launchpad»

Das Launchpad ist eine Art Mix aus der Gitter-Ansicht des im Dock abgelegten «Programme»-Ordners und den Homescreens eines iPads: Es zeigt einem alle auf dem System installierten Programme an. Die Programme können durch ziehen — genau gleich wie in iOS — sortiert und beim übereinander fallen lassen in ‘Ordner’ abgelegt werden. Die Launchpad-Ansicht öffnet sich nach Klick auf das Launchpad-Icon im Dock, allfällig geöffnete Fenster werden ausgeblendet und die Launchpad-Ansicht wird über einen verschwommenen Hintergrund gelegt. Ein einfacher Klick auf eines der Symbole öffnet das angeklickte Programm oder den angeklickten ‘Ordner’. Wird ausserhalb der Icons geklickt, gelangt man zurück zur vorhergehenden Ansicht. New developer Smuttlewerk Interactive will be releasing their first game Companions for the iPad this May. The game is a dungeon crawler with RPG and action elements and features a "countdown" element for skills, adding the need for precise timing to battles. Road to Mac OS X 10.7 Lion: Voraussetzungen

Mac OS X 10.7 Lion benötigt ein Mac mit Intel-Prozessor, mindestens jedoch einer der Typen Core 2 Duo, i5, i7 oder Xeon. Damit wird Lion höchstwahrscheinlich nicht auf allen der ersten Intel-Macs von 2006 und 2007 lauffähig sein, da diese Teils Core-Duo-Prozessoren verbaut haben. Die registrieren Apple-Entwickler können die Developer-Preview aus dem Mac App Store laden. Die Installations-Datei ist knapp 3.6 GB gross und enthält neben Mac OS X 10.7 Lion auch «Lion Server» (dazu mehr in einem separaten «Road to Mac OS X Lion»-Artikel). Lion benötigt laut Apple-Angaben mindestens 2 GB RAM, erfahrungsgemäss ist man mit mindestens der doppelten Menge Arbeitsspeicher aber (generell) besser bedient. Das Volume, auf dem Lion installiert werden soll, muss mindestens 20 GB gross sein.

Comcast CEO talks about the merger, 'cool new devices' like the iPad and why he doesn't fear Netflix

Barnes & Noble now selling the Nook Color on eBay for $199

Well, this one strikes us as a little odd. Barnes & Noble is currently selling its Nook Color on eBay (along with plenty of other things). The truly interesting part, however, is that the price, once a $50 coupon code is applied, is $199, which is of course $50 less than it sells them for in stores or on its own website. We aren't sure what the motivation behind this move is, but we'd guess that the bookseller is attempting to compete with other, unofficial eBay retailers selling B&N's goods. FAA approves iPad for flight logbooks

After three months of testing, the Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) has given approval for one company, Executive Jet Management, to use iPads running Jeppesen Mobile TC instead of the traditional paper charts and Electronic Flight Bags (EFBs). Though only valid for the one company at the moment, the decision presages eventual approval for iPads to be used widely for commercial and non-commercial flights. Pilots can use a kneeboard to secure the iPad hands-free while keeping it visible during critical stages of the flight.

Gameloft to develop games based on Unreal Engine 3

Epic Games' Unreal Engine 3, the technology behind the popular iOS game Infinity Blade, will be used by Gameloft to create four new games that will be released on multiple platforms, including for the iPhone/iPod Touch and iPad, the company said. Details on the games have not yet been released, though all four will be released later this year and into 2012.

Random House to use agency pricing in shift to iBooks

Random House on Monday said it would switch e-book business models in what's likely a sign of a deal for Apple's iBookstore. The publisher planned to switch to an agency model, where it will set the price and a given bookstore takes a flat percentage of the sale. Its switch takes effect Tuesday and will help it "forge new retail relationships" as well as expand its overall e-book sales.

Former Apple supply manager pleads guilty to kickbacks

Paul Shin Devine, the Apple global supply manager who passed confidential information on to suppliers trying to win contracts with the iPod and iPhone maker, has changed his plea to guilty on multiple criminal charges of accepting kickbacks, and will forfeit $2.28 million in money and property, according to the US Attorney's Office in San Francisco. He originally pleaded not guilty to 23 counts of wire fraud, conspiracy and money laundering back in August.

Cost breakdowns of the Motorola Xoom have suggested that its price is disproportionately higher than what it costs to make. Google restores Gmail access to one-third of affected users

If you've been following the seemingly-massive Gmail outage, you'll know that it's actually not as massive as it sounds. Google's revised its estimate again to say that only "0.02% of Google Mail users" -- roughly about 38,000 by our calculations -- were affected by the issue in total, claims that a full third of them have already had access restored, and expects the issue "to be resolved for everyone within 12 hours." As to the fate of years worth of email, Google reps wouldn't say, but promised us that engineers are working "as quickly as possible" to see the data restored as well. Keep hanging on, folks.

China Unicom preps in-house Wophone OS despite Android, iOS
