Apple releases OS X drivers for Samsung, Brother printers
Apple has released several drivers for Samsung and Brother printers connected to Snow Leopard systems, along with an Aperture SlideShow support update. Snow Leopard printer and scanner support has been extended to include a variety of models in Samsung's CLP-, CLX-, ML-, QL-, and SCX-series devices.The Brother drivers cover a wide range of DCP-, FAX-, HL-, MFC-, and QL-series printers and multi-function devices.

iLuv ships App Station speaker with iPhone clock app
iLuv this afternoon began shipping its one-of-a-kind iMM190 App Station speaker dock. The single-piece unit provides a potentially cheaper alternative by using an attached iPhone or iPod touch for more advanced functions. A free iLuv App Clock (App Store) serves as an alarm clock that can wake up the owner, play music without interrupting the display, and provide weather.

Flash in the iPad
Two stories are getting some airtime today. One has NPR and the WSJ building special iPad versions of their websites without Flash (remember this was one of Steve Jobs requests last month when he visited the Journal?) The sites will be basically the same but the Flash bits will be replaced largely by HTML5 elements.
Some of you might be thinking: Why not just build websites without Flash? Why keep the Flash versions around at all?
The Motley Fool's Eric Jhonsa responds that Flash isn't going anywhere soon. Whether you hate Flash or you love it, there are some realities that will keep Flash developers around for years to come.

Android Market apps double to 30,000 in three months
The number of apps in the Android Market has almost doubled in just three months, Google confirmed today in an update. Where it had officially reached 16,000 apps by mid-December, the search company now says the official marker has jumped to 30,000. Its figure includes both free and paid apps, although it wouldn't tell MobileCrunch what the ratio might be.

Briefly: Strainer file renaming utility, Free iWeb themes
BKTools recently announced the launch of its first Macintosh software product, Strainer. The new application has been designed to help users quickly rename groups of files. Users can define a set of rules that determines which characters to remove or replace in a filename and then drag a group of files to be modified. Each filename will be edited based on the users preferences and if users are not happy with the outcome they can choose to undo the changes. Monkeybread has announced Combine PDFs 5.0, updating its PDF merge/split software for the Mac. Combine PDFs allows users to merge PDF files and images into a single PDF file. Throughout the histories of Windows Mobile and Android, many handset developers have talked the talk of supporting these mobile operating systems, dribbling out a couple of handsets per year as they focused on other priorities. Leaked slide points to March 17th launch, $99 price for Motorola CLIQ XT
Motorola already said that its new CLIQ XT Android phone would be available sometime this month when it let us get our hands on the phone last week, but it unfortunately didn't get very specific about an actual date or a price. If this seemingly authentic slide obtained by TmoToday is any indication, however, it looks like the Blur-skinned handset will hit retail on March 17th (tomorrow), and run $99 on a two-year contract (or $199 for a year). NPR, WSJ building iPad-native sites without Flash
At least two major websites have said they will make iPad-specific versions of their pages instead of insisting on using Flash. Both National Public Radio and the Wall Street Journal will automatically detect the tablet and redirect it to a simliar version that cleanly removes the Adobe plugin. While it's not mentioned if either will still have media playback, NPR also mentioned to AllThingsD plans to re-tune its iPhone app to scale properly on the larger screen of the Apple device.

Orbino launches Padova iPad cases, offers exotic skins
Orbino has launched a new hand-stitched leather iPad case, Padova. The case is a play-through design, with a removable shoulder strap. It integrates a rigid leather flap with a hidden magnet closure to secure the iPad face when traveling - the flap doubles as a stand for both vertical and horizontal viewing when the device is in use. FCC National Broadband Plan: some of your favorite ISPs respond
Yesterday, the FCC submitted its National Broadband Plan to Congress, essentially requesting that six goals be met over the next decade, including sizzlers like access for "every American" to "robust broadband services,"which apparently equals a minimum of 100 million US homes with "affordable" access to at least 100MBps down / 50Mbps up speeds. Pretty heady stuff, we know. We thought we'd contact a few of your friendly ISPs for comment, and we've got Comcast, Time Warner and Verizon going on record here -- all in all, they're rather predictable 'rah rahs' for the plan, especially considering that whole "affordable" bit. Researchers teach liquid to flow uphill, hope to cool future CPUs (video)
Another day, another experimental CPU cooling method that may or may not come to pass. We've seen "thermal paste" from IBM and polyethylene from MIT, and now researchers at the University of Rochester have developed a method for coaxing water along nanometer-scale grooves carved into silicon. Samsung confirms slate PC in the works
Well, the details are extremely thin here folks, but it looks like Samsung's working on a tablet PC -- or 'slate' if you're into the new fangled lingo -- just like pretty much every other manufacturer on the planet. Speaking with APC (the website, not the clothier), Philip Newton, director of Samsung Australia's IT division, said that the company is working on a slate PC for the second half of 2010 that will have "PC-grade processing power and connectivity" -- two things Newton had previously cited as the main things lacking in the iPad. JooJoo refund issues creating some bad juju
Given the legally-disputed origins of the JooJoo and the current shipping delays, you'd think Fusion Garage would scrupulously maintain a squeaky-clean image with its customers as it leads up to launch, but it looks like it wasn't quite prepared to handle refunds in a sensible way -- we just confirmed that the company asked a customer for his bank account information in order to deposit a refund directly after running into some troubles with PayPal. IE9 preview finally gives Microsoft HTML5 support
Microsoft's second day of MIX10 has seen the launch of the Internet Explorer 9 Platform Preview, its first readily available version of the next-generation browser. The test version is described as rough and uses a bare frame but is the first version of IE to support HTML5, bringing it up to the level of Chrome and Safari as well as certain newer versions of Firefox. Even while early, however, it supports hardware acceleration and uses DirectX to accelerate drawing SVG images and text in the new web standard.

Nexus One gets AT&T, Canadian support
Google today officially updated the Nexus One to support the 850MHz 3G band. The new version puts the range-topping Android device on AT&T's 3G for the first time and also supports use on Bell, Rogers and Telus in Canada. Appropriately, Google now says it's shipping the Nexus One to Canada for the first time and is also selling the original model with 1,700MHz 3G, which should support Wind Mobile.

Bandai Rilakkuma netbook gets touchscreen and CPU boost, as precious as ever
We've heard some folks (we're not naming names) disparagingly refer to netbooks as "toys" from time to time. Of course, when a manufacturer like Bandai cranks the cute factor up to eleven we can't say that it's an altogether bad thing. Like its predecessor, the Rilakkuma SX features 1Seg TV, webcam, Bluetooth, and WiFi. Putting the "next" in "next-gen," this baby features an Atom Z520 processor, 1GB RAM, 60GB HDD, DVD Super Multi, and an 8.9-inch (1280 x 768) touchscreen. Microsoft delivers webcams with 720p, dynamic color
Microsoft at mid-day launched a trio of webcams that all bring the company into the HD era. The HD-5000 and HD-5001 for desktops, as well as the HD-6000 for notebooks, all capture a real 720p widescreen (1280x720) image and tout a new color correction engine dubbed TrueColor. The process uses a mix of hardware and software to adjust color tones, exposure and other factors to properly represent the output in less-than-ideal conditions.

Survey finds 40% of Blackberry owners want to switch to iPhone
Sillicon Valley-based Crowd Science released results from its survey of 1,140 respondents today revealing some interesting findings. It's been a long and painful four months since Pogoplug introduced its second generation NAS-ifier, but those who've been holding out for additional functionality can finally buy in. Marvell shows 10-inch Android tablet prototype
Marvell at the Future of Publishing Summit on Tuesday showed a prototype of a 10-inch tablet running Android. The example device uses a non-production shell but is expected to be fast, using an ARM-based Armada processor that could give it 1080p video playback without hurting battery life. The version on display appears to be using Android 1.6 rather than 2.0 or 2.1, but this would be more likely to change in a finished product.

Apple files for more projector patents
Remember that Digitimes report that said Apple was going to be putting together some kind of projector device in 2010? Well, if Apple were to do something like that, they'd probably want to patent it like crazy, right?
Patently Apple today looks at a another projector patent from Apple that states that a projector could not only be put into an iPhone or MacBook, but also in an Airport Express type of device. This product would act as a router and wireless hub and can get get projector video feeds from the devices over a network.

Samsung acquires 'Android' trademark for mobile hardware sales in Korea
As it turns out, Korea operates two separate trademark systems for hardware and software. So while this doesn't affect Android OS and its distribution, Samsung's recent acquisition of the Android hardware trademark does forbid other manufacturers from releasing Android-branded devices -- whether they be a mobile phone, a PMP, PDA, GPS, DMB, or any other snappily titled mobile computer -- into the Korean market. Freenet erwartet 2010 weniger Umsatz und mehr Gewinn
Freenet hat heute seine Bilanz für das Geschäftsjahr 2009 veröffentlicht. Demnach konnte der Büdelsdorfer Telekommunikationskonzern, der seit April 2009 unter dem Namen Mobilcom Debitel firmiert, seinen Umsatz gegenüber dem Vorjahr um 31,5 Prozent von 2,77 Milliarden auf 3,65 Milliarden Euro steigern. Apple holding off on ordering flash memory?
Apple is refraining from buying flash memory due to high prices, industry leaks asserted this morning. The company is expected to start negotiating a new round of contracts in spring for the NAND memory it uses in iPads, iPhones and iPods, but DigiTimes has claimed the company is avoiding a commitment until it can get a better deal. Slow demand for flash drives and camera cards, as well as Samsung's emphasis on profit over market share, are understood to be factors.

Rumor mill says Nintendo DS2 might be headed for E3 unveiling
Hot on the heels of the recent DSi XL appearance, rumors are swirling that Nintendo is preparing to announce a second version of the DS -- the DS2, if you will -- at E3 in June. Google sells just 135,000 Nexus Ones in 2.5 months
In spite of early fanfare, Google has sold just 135,000 Nexus One phones in the past 2.5 months, according to a Flurry estimate. Having tracked sales since the early January launch, the analysts believe the Android "superphone" in 74 days has had just a fraction of the sales the original iPhone managed over a similar timeframe in 2007, when it cracked 1 million. Canon EOS 5D Mark II update now live, adds 24p video
Canon late Monday posted its promised 2.0.3 firmware for the EOS 5D Mark II. The upgrade is tailored to videographers and lets them record at 1080p24 to match traditional movie theater frame rates. The 1080p30 mode has also been tuned to 29.97 frames per second to stay in sync with NTSC-based TV, and it's now possible to shoot in aperture or shutter priority modes to achieve shallow depth of field or high speed without full manual control.

Weitere Zahlen zum Verkaufsstart des iPads
Auf Grundlage von Bestellnummern wurde am Freitag ermittelt, dass in den ersten beiden Stunden angeblich mehr als 50.000 iPads vorbestellt wurden. Bis zum Abend lang soll dann ein Durchschnitt von ca. 20.000 Bestellungen pro Stunde gehalten worden sein. Intel on Tuesday formally launched its first six-core workstation and server processors. The Xeon 5600 has been made on the same 32 nanometer process as the Core i7-980X and give more performance without consuming more power as a result. Now that we have clarity with regard to a Windows Phone 7 update on the HD2 (sorry, folks), let's move on to the next contentious platform: Nokia's N900 and MeeGo. As Nokia's only Cortex-A8 handset, there's plenty of hope that Nokia sees fit to upgrade the N900 to MeeGo once the unified Maemo and Moblin OS is ready for consumers. Open Camera Controller: Nintendo DS als Fernsteuerung für DSLRs

Der Open Camera Controller stammt von den Leuten vom HDR Lab, die es zusammen mit Steve Chapman von den Gentle Giant Studios erdacht haben. Für Dreharbeiten brauchten sie mehr Flexibilität bei der Erstellung von HDR-Bildern mit ihrer Canon und bauten aus einer alten Nintendo DS, einem Fernauslöser mit Kabel, einer selbstentworfenen Platine, Arduino und einer Gameboy Advance-Cartridge den Open Camera Controller. Intel bringt 32-Nanometer-CPUs für Server und Workstations
Intel bringt heute die ersten Xeon-Prozessoren heraus, die in 32-Nanometer-Technologie gefertigt sind. Im Markt für Einstiegsserver mit einer CPU kann der Chiphersteller mit nur einem Modell (W3680) aufwarten. Die Xeon-W3680-CPU ist vollkommen identisch mit dem Desktop-Prozessor Core-i7-980X, den ZDNet ausführlich getestet hat. Intel verwendet lediglich unterschiedliche Modell-Bezeichnungen für den Server- und den Desktopmarkt.

First Data and Tyfone announce partnership for NFC payments by microSD card
We've already seen Visa team up with DeviceFidelity to deliver NFC payments via microSD card, and it looks like they now have some company from First Data and Tyfone, who have just announced a partnership of their own to help bring the technology to the cellphone-toting masses. At the heart of their system is Tyfone's SideTap card made by NXP Semiconductors (pictured after the break), which is not only able to function as an actual memory card in addition to a NFC payment device, but should cost about the same as a regular memory card of the same capacity as well. Olé, Contoso: Windows Phone Marketplace will integrate carrier-branded stores
So we noticed this odd "Contoso" label on Microsoft's Windows Phone Marketplace press image earlier today, and we finally got to the bottom of it: Microsoft's Todd Biggs says it's a placeholder entry for a carrier-branded section of the store -- instead of having a separate portal and / or store, Verizon or AT&T or whoever can simply sell their content to customers directly through Marketplace. So why Contoso? Todd says it's a random trademark owned by Microsoft used in place of carrier names that doesn't actually mean anything, although we think it suggests adventure, white roadsters, and finely-groomed mustachios. onOne has launched new free versions of its PhotoTools 2.5 and PhotoFrame 4.5 plug-ins for Adobe Photoshop. PhotoTools is an image enhancement plug-in that delivers over 300 different photo altering effects. Dell joins dog pile, sues five LCD makers over price-fixing allegations
Looks like Dell is getting itself a membership in a club of which AT&T, Nokia, and the US Department of Justice are none too pleased to say they're members. Canon EOS 5D Mark II firmware 2.0.3 arrives at last to free us from frame rate hell
It's been obvious from day one that it was possible, but after a couple of years of oh-so-painful 30 FPS recording on the EOS 5D Mark II, Canon is finally coming through with its long-promised 2.0.3 update that brings 29.97 FPS and 24 FPS (23.976, to be precise) 1080p recording at last. Even the VGA mode has been swapped to a 29.97 actual rate, and PAL mode has a flat 25 FPS and 23.976 FPS as well. Additional tweaks include a manual volume adjustment (as opposed to the automatic gain the cameras usually employ), a brightness or RGB histogram display (this function, like some of these other features, has be

PayPal iPhone app adds 'Bump to Send Money' feature
PayPal updated their iPhone app earlier today with a bunch of new features, but by far the biggest addition was a 'Bump to Send Money' feature. You may recognize 'Bump', as it was an app developed by a 15 year-old and was the billionth app downloaded from the App Store back in April of 2009.
But the combination of the two apps might just be a game-changer.
The new feature allows users to simply enter their payment information and bump to pay. Pretty cool right?

Earthquake detection software gains foothold in California
Stanford's Quake-Catcher Network has been up and running since early 2008, but it looks like it's just now starting to reach the critical mass of users that's essential for its success. As you may be aware, the software takes advantage of the accelerometers built into many new laptops to watch for any signs of shaking or vibration, which it then compares with data from other laptops in the same area -- if they're all shaking at the same time, that's a pretty good indication there's an earthquake happening. Until recently, however, there hasn't been enough users in any particular area to produce reliable data, but Stanford now counts more than 450 users in California alone, which has provided it with its first truly viable testbed. Microsoft's Game Room for Xbox 'rewinds' the hits in our hands-on demo
Microsoft showed off its new retro-tastic Game Room UI for Xbox 360 in playable form at GDC last week. While the "make a virtual representation of a gaming space" idea might seem ripped straight from Sony's Home, there aren't really any actual similarities -- outside of the fact they're both in 3D, at least. Novell shows way to port Xbox 360 games to iPhone, Android
Software developer Novell on Monday demonstrated new technology that should bring some Xbox 360 games to iPhone and Android users. MonoTouch, which recognizes the XNA 4.0 kit needed for the Xbox 360 and Windows Phone 7, will have the ability to convert the Microsoft libraries to both the Apple and Google platforms. Microsoft itself is not making such efforts, instead only bringing its games to Windows Phone 7 handsets.

We found GigaPan's Epic 100 robotic camera mount to be an impressive if not entirely practical solution when we got our hands on it back in May of last year, but it's unfortunately of little use with a full-size DSLR. GigaPan is set to fill that gap with its new Epic Pro model, which it's just announced will be available in April. Lenovo intros multi-touch LCD, other widescreens
Lenovo has introduced three LCD monitors, the 21.5-inch L2261, 23-inch L2361p, and 23.6-inch L2461x. All have 1080p resolution, and the 23.6-inch model is one of Lenovo's first with multi-touch capability. This high-end model also has built-in speakers, a microphone, four USB ports and a 2-megapixel webcam. The panel is fast with a 120Hz refresh and musters 300 cd/m2 brightness, 1,000:1 contrast and a 5ms pixel response time.

Apple puts out Aperture SlideShow Support Update 1.1
Apple tonight released its second fix for Aperture 3 since launch. Aperture SlideShow Support Update 1.1 (3.3MB) mends video problems and specifically solves a problem with HD video playback in slideshows run on Snow Leopard systems. Regardless of size, audio and video should also now remain in sync after a video's length has been trimmed.

You know -- those ones that look absolutely nothing like the so-called Metro UI that Windows Phone 7 Series is actually using? MOG readies subscription music for Android, iPhone
The on-demand and online music service MOG on Monday announced the upcoming release of its MOG All Access app for smartphones. Initially, the app will be available for Android-powered devices as well as iPhones. These versions of the app will launch in the spring, likely April and the service will cost $10 per month. NPD: Mac sales up 39 percent in January and Febuary as iPod sales rebound
Well, it looks like it's not just iPad pre-orders that are possibly be beating a few expectations -- according to NPD, sales of Macs and iPods were also up over some estimates in January and February. More specifically, NPD's Gene Munster says that sales of Macs were up 39% year over year for the two months (ahead of estimates of 22%), which should translate to sales of between 2.8 to 2.9 million Macs for the full quarter, while iPod sales were up 7% during the same period, suggesting total iPod sales of between nine and ten million for the firs
