Windows Phone 7 Series targeted at 38 year-old 'life maximizers'
Here's a fun tidbit we just learned from Microsoft's Joe Belfiore: in order to focus Windows Phone 7 Series on the idea of best serving end users, the team actually created two fictional targets consumers named "Miles" and "Anna," a pair of married 38-year old "life maximizers" who demand the most from their devices. Yes, it's a little strange and hilariously specific on the surface -- Anna just scaled back her PR job to part-time so she can take care of the kids! 4 of 10 BlackBerry owners want iPhone next
A new Crowd Science study today suggests that BlackBerry owners have little of the loyalty of Android and iPhone users. Of a sample audience, 39 percent of BlackBerry owners feel they're very likely to buy an iPhone as their next device, and 34 percent expect to switch to Android. Only 31 percent would actively resist an iPhone, and 28 percent would actively oppose Google's OS.

Windows Phone 7 Series will be WVGA only at launch, HVGA later
Microsoft's driving home the point that developers are going to know exactly what kind of hardware they're targeting as they whip up Windows Phone 7 Series apps -- and naturally, a biggie is screen resolution since that affects how UI elements are going to be placed, how cool they can look, and how small they can realistically be. Steve Jobs shoots down request for Apple Store in Brazil
Steve Jobs reportedly rejected the idea of placing an Apple Store in Rio de Janeiro, citing "super crazy" tax policies as a reason for keeping business out of Brazil, according to MacMagazine Brazil. You could argue that Steve Ballmer's classic "developers, developers, developers" mantra is more important to the success of Windows Phone 7 Series than of any other product in recent Microsoft history, so it comes as no surprise that he's pulled it out of his hat one more time for MIX10 today. Microsoft shows WP7 Marketplace, says no outside apps
Microsoft today provided full details of its previously hinted at Windows Phone Marketplace. The store is an improvement on the Zune Marketplace and puts not just apps and music in the same place but breaks out app updates, games and podcasts on the top level. Windows Phone 7's "panorama" layout remains intact and uses the space to both highlight a featured app as well as to delve into specific categories.

Samsung Windows Phone 7 Series handset makes the scene
Here's a fun little surprise: Microsoft's Joe Belfiore just ran through a Windows Phone 7 Series demo on an as-yet unannounced Samsung device here at MIX. Apart from hints at an OLED screen, we don't much about the specific hardware, but Joe also showed off a slide of the WP7S minimum requirements, so we can tell you it has at least 265MB of RAM and 8GB of flash, as well as DirectX9 acceleration. FCC submits National Broadband Plan to Congress: at least 100M US homes with access to 100Mbps download speeds
Right on schedule, the FCC has submitted its National Broadband Plan. There's a lot to go through -- note the calls for broadband benchmarking and pricing reports -- and we're still combing, but here's what we've noticed so far. Dell ships 24-inch eco-friendly LCD
Dell added a 24-inch WLED-backlit LCD monitor to its range recently with the G2410H. Energy-saving features include an ambient light sensor that adjusts brightness accordingly, while sleep mode uses up just 0.15W of power when connected using a VGA input. The monitor itself is made with arsenic-free glass with no mercury, polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plastic or Brominated Flame Retardants (BFRs).

News: Report: Estimated iPad pre-orders at 120,000 on day one
Daniel Tello, a Venezuelan blogger and analyst, estimates that Apple saw as many as 120,000 iPad pre-orders on Friday. Tello, who goes by the screen name Deagol, bases his number on tracking of order numbers submitted by members of an Apple-focused board on the site InvestorVillage, compared against his estimates of Apple’s average online daily order volume. Samsung preps new tablet, calls iPad a "glorified MID"
Samsung today said it would return to tablets in earnest by the second half of the year. Australian IT marketing manager Emmanuele Silanesu didn't provide many details of the device but said it would focus much more on the home than the Q1 series, which was ostensibly targeted at business. He admitted to APC that the Q1 was a failure for the public, as it was targeted for workers and too limited and expensive, but stressed that a home Samsung tablet could be a main device in place of a notebook if had enough functionality.

Dell Mini 5's (Streak) to be headache for the next iPod touch?
Dell's new Android-based Mini 5 (Streak) details were leaked to Engadget last week and seem to have some of the features desired on future iPod touch devices. Specifically: cameras, a better screen both in size and resolution and 3G data. These look like they could be very popular devices if priced low -- which Dell is known for. Apple usually updates its iPod lines in August.
Imagine if they sell the device with a similar data plan as the iPad except with Google Voice with Gizmo5 VoIP. And maybe even tethering for a nominal cost? That'd be tempting to a few people (present company included).

AMD lays out Open Stereo 3D Initiative at GDC

Analyst: Quarterly Mac sales to approach 2.9m units
Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster on Monday circulated a report detailing his expectations for Mac and iPod sales through the first quarter of the year. Based on data gathered by NDP Group, Munster believes monthly Mac sales were up by an average of 39 percent year-over-year in January and February.

FCC broadband plan official: 100Mbps homes, 1Gbps schools
Hinted at this weekend, the FCC today outlined its National Broadband Plan (PDF). The initiative plans to increase both the reach and speed of Internet access across the US by 2020 and would center on 100 Squared, a plan to get at least 100 million homes on "affordable" 100Mbps access. However, it would also promise at least 1Gbps to "anchor institutions" like hospitals and schools.

Rekord: Phenom II X4 955 BE auf 7.109 MHz
Aktuell werden beinahe monatlich die bestehenden Rekorde im Bereich Übertaktung gebrochen. So auch nun geschehen als ein Prozessor auf über sieben Gigahertz übertaktet wurde. Microsoft demos push notifications on Windows Phone 7 Series
Microsoft's flavor of push notifications for Windows Phone 7 Series -- the so-called Microsoft Notification Service -- was just demoed using an MLS (Major League Soccer) app, and it fits in really well with the "Metro" UI motif. Notifications come in via an unobtrusive bar across the top of the display -- better than iPhone, and not unlike webOS -- and tapping them takes you into the app where you're presumably taken to a fuller view of the relevant information. The notifications are available regardless of whether the app is open, a model that mirrors Apple's and likely a heavy dose of foreshadowing that multitasking -- at least, multitasking as we know it -- won't be available.

Intel ships $125 budget SSD
Intel catered to the rapidly growing budget SSD realm today by launching the X25-V. The 2.5-inch SATA II drive is meant alternately for netbooks and for dual-drive systems where a fast and more reliable OS drive is crucial. The SSD isn't as fast as the M or X series, at 135MB per second reads and 35MB per second writes, but is still about four times faster on average than a 7,200RPM rotating hard disk.

Microsoft demos third-party apps for Windows Phone 7 Series: Silverlight, extensions, and true Xbox gaming
Well we've just gotten a look at some of the first third-party applications written for Windows Phone 7 Series with Silverlight -- and they're looking pretty darn slick. Corporate VP Joe Belfiore first showed off the Associated Press newsreader app while demoing the new OS in front of an audience at MIX10 (Microsoft's developer pow-wow). There wasn't a lot to glean from the quick look, but it's clear that the developers are hewing very closely to the UI paradigms of WP7S with a multi-panel system that lets you jump through various news stories and topics. Joe touted the ability to view photos and video (utilizing some pretty slick animations) and also showed off breaking news alerts which allow you to jump to news stories as they break. Netflix announced for Windows Phone 7 Series
We just got a quick at Netflix for Windows Phone 7 Series, one of the third-party apps Microsoft's showing off here at MIX10, and it looks well, very Netflixy -- it's red to the bone. Unlike other mobile Netflix apps, this one's got Watch Instantly support and it looks great -- a real testament to the capabilities Microsoft's bringing to the table with it Silverlight-based dev platform. AT&T's network survives iPhone influx at SXSWi event

Windows Phone 7 development, marketplace detailed
Microsoft at its MIX10 developer event detailed some of how app development and sales will work for Windows Phone 7. Confirming that it's based on Silverlight and XNA, the mobile OS will fence off third-party apps from true native code but will give them access to all the key features: it will recognize accelerometers, cameras and multi-touch gestures. WP7 will also mirror iPhone development by using background push notification for those not allowed to multitask and include a general location service that any app can use.

Tiny, robotic space shuttle to be launched into orbit in April
A long-delayed project initiated by NASA and carried out by Boeing may finally get to see the light of cold, beautiful day according to reports from the US Air Force. The X-37, a small, robotic space plane is set to make its first unmanned trip into orbit in April. Conceived by NASA as an unmanned re-entry lifeboat for crew of the International Space Station, the X-37 reportedly has a cargo bay of just 7 x 4 feet, and it has apparently been shipped to Florida for its maiden voyage, where it will be mounted to an Atlas V rocket for its launch into space. Apple in a low-key move has hired Richard DeVaul for what may indicate the long-term direction of its devices. The AWare Technologies founder has been a Senior Prototype Scientist at the company since January and is best-known for his doctorate work at MIT, where he specialized in wearable computer technology. Among his developments are a heads-up display that provides subtle memory clues and a "body-worn network" that would use a set of nodes to provide environmental and navigational data to the wearer.

Apple is rapidly widening the gap between its app platform and Facebook, new data from Flurry found today. Although the gap was relatively small about five months into the app portals' respective lifespans, by the 1.5 year mark Apple now has more than twice as many apps. Ein erster ausführlicher Videoeinblick in das ASUS T101MT mit drehbarem Display wurde nun endlich in die Sphäre geschossen. Das Netbook beweist sich als durchaus kompetent ist aber keine Supermaschine. Youtube-Videos mit 480p gehen schon mal schnell an die 95 Prozent Prozessorleistung und ruckeln dabei noch immer gehörig. Apple lost former PA Semi CEO Dan Dobberpuhl in the middle of last year, according to CNET. Dobberpuhl is a significant loss because he's seen as one of the smarter people in the processor industry. Judge reaffirms decision backing Jobs' mansion demolition

NVIDIA's 3DTV Play finally solves the HDMI 1.4 gap for 3D Vision
In case you hadn't noticed, there was some trouble brewing in the NVIDIA camp. After ages of reigning atop the land of stereoscopic 3D playback on the PC, NVIDIA is finally being confronted with a real, bona fide standard for 3D, with zero GPUs capable of meeting it. The current NVIDIA 3D Vision-compatible cards pump out the necessary pixels over DisplayPort or dual DVI plugs, while the official spec for 3D TVs is an HDMI 1.4 plug that accepts data from both frames at once. We were in doubt there for a moment, but it turns out NVIDIA's cards upgrade to 1.4 just fine, and all 3D Vision customers will be getting this as a free upgrade later this spring. Let's get this out of the way right up front: the estimated number of iPads sold in the first 72 hours is nowhere near official. And if the numbers hadn't been scraped together by a well known amateur Apple analyst who regularly trumps the pros then we'd be skipping the fruits of his black magic algorithms altogether. iPad pre-orders may cool to "just" 30,000 per day
The rate of iPad pre-orders has cooled but could still lead to major sales even before the tablet ships, an estimate from the AAPL Sanity board suggests. Following an earlier calculation of 120,000 on day one, the board now believes that Apple landed 152,000 pre-orders over the weekend and is settling down to rates of 30,000 pre-orders on a typical weekday and 15,000 each day on weekends. Without a significant change, the rate while lower would still have Apple ship 510,000 iPads just for these customers.

Tim Bray wechselt von Sun zu Android/Google
Tim Bray, einer der Autoren der XML-Spezifikation des W3C, heuert bei Google an, um dort an Android zu arbeiten. Bray ist laut Golem.de Apples iPhone-Strategie ein Dorn im Auge. "Es ist ein steriler, Disney-artiger, umzäunter Garten, umgeben von Anwälten mit scharfen Zähnen. Leute, die Apps kreieren, dienen dem Wohlgefallen des Hausherren und fürchten seinen Zorn", beschreibt Bray das iPhone. Er sehe den Job bei Google als Chance zu zeigen, dass Apple mit seinem geschlossenen Ansatz falsch liegt. Ende Februar 2010 hatte er Sun verlassen. Bray war an einigen wesentlichen Webentwicklungen beteiligt.

Nintendo's DS sequel will have a pair of key developments that make it more competitive against the iPhone and iPod touch, based on investigations on the GDC show floor. Believe it: $70 at Target takes home a new Philips (eh hem, Funai) BDP5010 Blu-ray player that once sold for as much as $250. Hell, it's listed for $139.99 right now on Target's online storefront. Kürzlich noch wurden von Sony 3D Bravias vorgestellt, aber aufgrund der jetzigen Sendelage von 3D-Material war das alles nur halb spektakulär. Klar, dieser BX30H, der bis zu 32 Zoll an Diagonale haben wird, erfindet das Rad nicht neu, aber ist mit einer 500GB Festplatte ausgestattet, was das Speichern von Daily Soaps und ähnlichem natürlich recht komfortabel macht. Wie so oft müssen die USA und Europa erstmal abwarten und grünen Tee trinken, denn diese Glotze kommt erstmal nur in Japan heraus.

Fix schließt Sicherheitsloch im Internet Explorer
Microsoft hat einen sogenannten Fix It für das offene Sicherheitsloch im Internet Explorer 6 und 7 veröffentlicht. Allerdings gibt es den Fix nur für Windows XP und Windows Server 2003, auf anderen Windows-Systemen ist er wirkungslos. Apples Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook hat vergangenen Mittwoch eine Bonuszahlung über 22 Millionen Dollar (24 Millionen Euro) erhalten. Gesichtserkennung auf Digitalkameras? Das ist ja sowas von 2008! FujiFilms Finepix Z700 erkennt jetzt auch Haustiere. Natürlich nur wenn sie lächeln. Und auch erst, wenn die Software ausgereift ist. Und das scheint bei diesem 12-Megapixel-Shooter noch nicht wirklich der Fall zu sein. Komisch eigentlich, denn immerhin soll die Z700 mit Touchscreen-Interface schon nächsten Monat auf den Markt kommen. Bei der Vorstellung in Tokyo schlugen alle Versuche jedenfalls amtlich fehl, sobald sich die Hunde-Modells bei der Präsentation bewegten. Verkaufsstart: 5 Mio. iPads in 6 Monaten?
Seit dem vergangenen Freitag nimmt Apple in den USA iPad-Bestellungen entgegen – maximal zwei Stück pro Person. Allein in den ersten sechs Stunden sollen mehr als 90.000 eingegangen sein. Das haben Analysten anhand der Auftragsnummern ausgerechnet, wie heise.de berichtet. Die Investmentbank FBR Capital Markets & Co. rechnet den Marktstart so hoch, dass Apple in sechs Monaten 5 Millionen iPads verkauft haben wird.

Auf Grundlage von Bestellnummern wurde am Freitag ermittelt, dass in den ersten beiden Stunden angeblich mehr als 50.000 iPads vorbestellt wurden. Bis zum Abend lang soll dann ein Durchschnitt von ca. 20.000 Bestellungen pro Stunde gehalten worden sein. Spekulation: Kommt iTunes 9.5 mit E-Book-Support
Mit dem Verkaufsstart des iPad am 3. April soll in den USA auch Apples E-Book-Laden "iBookstore" ans Netz gehen. Der Zugriff von iPad aus wird über ein kostenloses Programm namens "iBooks" erfolgen, das gleichzeitig auch als Regal für die erworbenen Schmöker dient.
Bislang hat sich Apple allerdings weder dazu geäußert, ob es die iBooks-Anwendung auch für den iPod touch bzw. das iPhone geben wird, noch ob sich auf den iBookstore auch anderweitig zugreifen lässt. Gut denkbar wäre jedoch, dass der iTunes Store mit Apples Buchladen um eine Abteilung reicher wird.
Dass iTunes für die Übertragung der Einkäufe zwischen Computer und iPad verantwortlich ist steht jedenfalls außer Zweifel, und mehr noch: Apple hat inzwischen bestätigt, dass sich auf dem iPad auch anderweitig erworbene (DRM-freie) E-Books im verbreiteten EPUB-Format lesen lassen. iPad-Schutzhüllen: Belkin stellt eigene Modelle vor
Wer sich die Wartezeit aufs iPad verkürzen will, kann sich ja schon mal Gedanken über die geeignete Verpackung machen. Zumindest für unterwegs empfiehlt sich vermutlich eine Hülle zum Schutz vor Kratzern und sonstigen Beschädigungen.

Keepin' it real fake: iPhone hits discount retailers as an eyeshadow palette
Now, these may have been around for ages, we can't really be sure because, truth be told, it's pretty rare for us to troll the aisles of Kohl's makeup section looking for KIRFs. Regardless, a helpful, hawk-eyed reader snapped this shot of an eyeshadow palette -- called eyemobile -- that's got the distinct iPhone aura going on, though we're 100 percent certain this is an unauthorized use case. It's hard to say from the photo, but it also looks like there's a lip gloss palette in the background (which we assume is called lipmobile), and that, friends, we would pay money for. Lots of money.

App-Test: Melatonin
Wecken soll der Wecker, doch beim Einschlafen helfen? Da hilft nur Schäfchen zählen oder die Wiederholung von „Deutschlands schönste Bahnstrecken“ schauen. Weder Schäfchen noch Bummelzüge fühlen sich aber dafür zuständig, den Schlaf auch wieder zu beenden. Da hilft nur eine App, die beides kann:
