Microsoft Research working on portable Surface
Microsoft's Surface has managed to carve out a small niche for itself, but there's only so many places that a large, touchscreen installation can find a home (a yacht, for instance). Microsoft Research seems to be aware of that, and it's apparently been hard at work on a more portable Surface for some time now. As you can see above (and in the video after the break), the so-called Mobile Surface would rely on a combination of a projector and a camera (and mobile phone, in this instance), which would offer about the same level of interaction as a regular Surface, and even a few advantages -- like being able to use a pair of drumsticks to

VPN Tracker 6.2 extends Cisco support
equinux has released v6.2 of VPN Tracker, a Mac VPN client. The title attempts to simplify VPN use through the concept of the Secure Desktop, and by working to maintain a constant connection. The v6.2 update adds support for Cisco ASA 5500-series hardware, and speeds up connectivity for other Cisco devices.

Apple Stores will get iPads on March 10th, customers on the 26th?
The Examiner has a pretty interesting iPad story for us today. According to their sources, the iPad will reach Apple Stores for employee training on March 10th. On March 15th, the television commercials (remember the one filmed in a diner in California?) will air. Then on March 26th, iPad sales will open to the public of the Wifi version. 3G versions will follow in late April or May.
That all seems to mesh with us and we've heard repeatedly that the release date would be March 26th, barring any unforeseen delays. They conclude with this little t

LG's LU2300 set to challenge Samsung's M100S for Korean Android dominance?
Eternal archrivals-to-the-death Samsung and LG have a tendency to match one another tit for tat in virtually every consumer electronic category, but for whatever reason, LG's been far less interested in going for broke with Android over the past year -- though a preoccupation with Windows Phone 7 Series is a solid guess at this point. Things may be changing, though, now that we've got news out of Telecoms Korea that they're prepping a more brutal assault than the weakling GW620 could ever provide in the form of a so-called LU2300 for the domestic market (we're assuming the actual thing will be a little more well, "designed" than the snow-white mockup above).

AT&T: iPhone an important device for "quite some time"
The iPhone will still be an important part of AT&T's life for "quite some time," company chief Randall Stephenson said today at a Morgan Stanley technology conference today. When prompted about rumors of exclusivity ending, the CEO stopped short of explaining the deal but did say that Apple's phone was both an important part of the company's recent experience and that he didn't expect this to change anytime soon. Skooba Design has announced the release of two new products, the Cable Stable DLX and SkoobaWraps. The Cable Stable DLX features a grid of elastics in different sizes and orientations, allowing users to organize a variety of cables and accessories. Altogether the cable/accessory organizer provides about 18 different spaces for storage in the size of a traditional day planner. Microsoft tells IE faithful on Windows XP to avoid F1 key
Still hanging around on Windows XP? Perfectly acceptable. Still using Internet Explorer to browse the world wide web? Just a wee bit less forgivable, but we understand that some of you simply can't get around it. If we just rung your bell, you might want to rip the F1 key right off of your keyboard (at least temporarily), as a recently discovered vulnerability in VBScript -- which can only bother Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 -- could allow malicious code to weasel its way right into your life with a single keystroke. CrossOver 9.0 attempts to speed up installations
CodeWeavers has released CrossOver 9, a major update of its Mac virtualization software. Users can run Windows programs inside Mac OS X without having to own their own copy of Windows. The upgrade implements a new user interface, meant to simplify the installation of Windows titles. In "many cases," CodeWeavers claims, installation should now only require a single click.

SteelSeries adds 6Gv2 gaming keyboard, 7H headset
PC gaming peripherals maker SteelSeries on Tuesday introduced the new 6Gv2 mechanical gaming keyboard and 7H gaming headset at the CeBIT show in Germany. The 6Gv2 has 18-karat gold-plated mechanical switches for quicker response times than conventional keyboards as well as added durability. ASUS DR-900 e-reader hands-on
After weeks of hearing about the DR-900 (or DR-950) e-reader, you had to know that we'd sprint (okay, walk at a brisk pace) over to ASUS' booth to finally handle the touchscreen device in person. The 9-inch ebook reader was quite light in hand, and though we didn't have Amazon's Kindle DX with us, it appeared very comparable in size. As far as the reading experience goes, the preloaded text-based PDFs looked crisp on the 1024 x 768 display and as per usual the e-ink display took about a second or two to refresh. ASUS EeeKeyboard PC hands-on (slight return)
Has it really been almost a year (to the day!) since we last gave some first-hand thoughts on ASUS' audacious Eee Keyboard PC? Some observations about this Apple-HTC patent lawsuit
I've just been jotting down some observations on the Apple v. HTC suit.
If you think this isn't really a suit aimed at Google, you are kidding yourself (Android Nexus One and myTouch cited in the brief ). By going after HTC, is Apple trying to scare manufacturers away from Google's Android? Wouldn't Palm have been a better choice since they make both the hardware and the software in their devices? Can't HTC just say that they make hardware and none of the software stuff applies to them? "Go bother Google!"

Apple suing HTC over 20-odd patents before both the US District Court and the International Trade Commission has certainly caused some chaos this morning, but we thought we'd take a quick breath now that we have the complaints and tease out exactly what patents are at stake here. Corsair preps fast Voyager GTR flash drives
Corsair has released a new range of USB drives with the Flash Voyager GTR. Available in either 32GB, 64GB or 128GB capacities, either sports quad-channel architecture that enables up to 34MBps read speeds and 28MBps write speeds, which is near the maximum for the USB 2.0 interface. During testing, Corsair says its 128GB Voyager GTR outperformed a competitor's USB drive of the same capacity by a significant margin.

Sieht so aus, als ob Apples Klage gegen HTC wegen Patentverletzungen, die heute in den USA eingereicht wurde, eigentlich auf Android abzielt. Im Text wird explizit zwischen HTCs Android-Phones und WinMo-Phones unterschieden, wobei die Android-Phones mehrfach als Beispiel für Patentverletzungen herangezogen werden. Microsoft demos mobile Surface 3D interface
Microsoft today was spotted developing a new concept for a portable multi-touch interface. Mobile Surface (link currently inactive) combines a camera and a projector to create a multi-touch interface from a much smaller device, such as a smartphone. Unlike the table-based Surface of today, it would respond in 3D and would allow interactions based on the distance from the surface and the camera.

Apple wins patents for unibody MacBook construction
Apple has this week won the rights to three patents, all covering the construction of unibody MacBooks. Two of these document the MacBook Air, which was the first Apple notebook to use a combination frame and casing made out of a single block of aluminum. Aside from external design, the other patent covers the Air's multi-touch glass trackpad, which has also since spread to other Apple portables. Its origins can be traced back to the iPhone.

Motorola hat mit dem Backflip ein weiteres Android-Smartphone für den deutschen Markt angekündigt. Es kommt mit umklappbarer QWERTZ-Tastatur sowie 5-Megapixel-Kamera samt Autofokus und LED-Blitz. Logitechs Fernbedienungen der Harmony-Reihe sind traditionell schick und mit Display aufgebretzelt, allerdings auch entsprechend hochpreisig: Für das Flaggschiff Harmony 1100 Advanced muss man 449 Euro hinblättern, für die Harmony 900 349 Euro und so weiter bis zur Harmony 700 für 129 Euro. Jetzt hat Logitech mit den Modellen 600 und 650 allerdings die 100er-Marke unterschritten und kommt damit langsam in eine Zone, die wir für Fernbedienungen noch irgendwie OK finden. Konkret gibt´s die Harmony 650 für 79 Euro (Harmony 600 gibt´s vorerst nur in den USA), dafür bekommt man dann aber auch ein Farb-Display zur Steuerübersicht über 5 Geräte. Apple specifically going after Android in HTC lawsuit
There's no delicate way to put this: at least part of Apple's patent lawsuit against HTC appears to be a proxy fight for a larger issue with Android as a whole. Apple's complaint with the International Trade Commission makes an explicit distinction between HTC's Android devices and its WinMo phones (referred only to as "DSP Products"), and the Android sets are repeatedly called out for infringing certain patents. We don't know exactly what Apple's issue is yet -- the problem could be the specific way HTC implements Android, rather than Android itself -- but it's certainly a big shot across Google's bow. We'll keep reading and let you know what else we find out.

iPhone profit margin at nearly 60 percent?
Apple is turning 57.8 percent in gross profit off the iPhone, according to an estimate from Bernstein Research analyst Toni Sacconaghi. The figure puts Apple's profit well about that of other notable smartphone makers, such as HTC, Motorola and Nokia, and even RIM, which keeps about 42.6 percent of its BlackBerry sales revenue. The iPhone could eventually account for between 45 and 50 percent of Apple's revenue in FY2011, says Sacconaghi, up from about 30 percent in FY2009.

The RedEye Mini plugs into your iPxx headphone jack and, with a downloadable app, turns your little Apple device into a programmable remote control. PC gaming headsets aren't really something you think of when the word 'stylish' comes up -- in fact, you can usually file them somewhere after fanny packs and parachute pants for style points. Sony's aiming to change that a bit with a new series of 'phones, and we have to say, they may have just pulled it off. XP downgrade lawsuit thrown out, MS lawyers celebrate rare victory

Opera hat heute die fertige Version des Opera-Browsers 10.5 für Windows veröffentlicht, die wieder diverse Neuerungen mit an Bord hat. Sipgate für iPhone: VoIP über UMTS jetzt integriert
Die App des VoIP-Anbieters Sipgate ist seit dem gestrigen Update nun auch über das UMTS-Netz nutzbar. Damit folgt man dem Beispiel von iCall und Fring und ermöglicht Voice-over-IP-Gespräche unabhängig von vorhandener WiFi-Verbindung.

Western Digital stattet externe Mac-Festplatte mit E-Paper-Display aus
Western Digital hat seine externe 2,5-Zoll-Festplatte My Passport Studio überarbeitet. Ab sofort ist das für Mac-Rechner mit HFS+ vorformatierte Laufwerk mit einem sogenannten E-Label, einem Display aus elektronischem Papier, ausgestattet. Darüber lassen sich Füllstand, Laufwerksname oder eine vom Nutzer festgelegte Bezeichnung anzeigen, selbst dann, wenn die Festplatte ausgesteckt ist.

Intels neuer Classmate PC ist knuffig und solide, leider ohne Multitouch

Intel hat auf der CeBit einen neuen Classmate PC vorgestellt, der mit Pine Trail Atom Prozessor, 10,1-Zoll-Touchscreen und extrasolider Ausführung kommt - schließlich ist der Netbook-Tablet-Hybrid für den Einsatz in Schulen konzipiert: Spritzwasser-resistent, antibakteriell beschichtete Tastatur, jede Menge Gummi und ein spezieller HD-Schutz machen den Classmate zu einer grundsoliden Erscheinung. Fein sind auch die drehbare Webcam, das interne Mikro, der Bewegungssensor und der Henkel, ein wenig enttäuschend ist allerdings, dass kein Multitouch an Bord ist.

NVIDIA officially intros next-gen Ion with Optimus tech
NVIDIA today finally confirmed details of its next-generation Ion platform, known informally as Ion 2. Unlike the previous platform, Ion 2 is a dedicated graphics core and not a full chipset. HTC HD2 and Moto Cliq XT pricing revealed in T-Mobile database?
Alright, we know there's a big old watermark covering it up, but the HD2's price when it makes its eagerly awaited US debut on T-Mobile has been identified as being $199 after rebate, presumably as part of a two-year commitment with the carrier. As usual with such screen grabs, we can't be 100 percent sure, but that number seems to be in the right ballpark, and is joined by a $129 price for Motorola's Cliq XT and a $69 sticker for Nokia's Nuron handset. ASUS EeeKeyboard ist eine echte Diva: Sehr elegant und sehr zickig. Nachdem der Starttermin für den Tastatur-Rechner schon ungezählte Mal verschoben wurde, hieß es Anfang Janaur auf der CES: Das EeeKeyboard kommt endgültig im Februar zu Preisen zwischen 350 und 417 Euro mit Atom N270, 1GB RAM, 16 GB SSD und natürlich dem 5-Zoll Touchscreen. Intel's new covertible Classmate PC hands-on
Score one for the kids! We just got to toy around with the new convertible Classmate PC and, boy, does it feel solid. Though it feels quite heavy in hand, it definitely feels like it can take a beating in a backpack and, as you can see in the video below, survive a decent fall. We're less impressed, however, with the resistive touchscreen performance. Though we're keeping in mind that these were pre-production units, the resistive touchscreen was quite unresponsive to the pen input when we tried to draw on the screen. Update auf Thunderbird 3.0.2 lässt Ordner verschwinden
Ende letzter Woche wurde Thunderbird 3.0.2 veröffentlicht, um Fehler in dem E-Mail-Client zu beseitigen. Dabei ist ein neuer Fehler entstanden, weshalb E-Mail-Verzeichnisse fehlen oder sogar die gesamte Ordnerübersicht leer sein kann. Urteil: Vorratsdatenspeicherung ist verfassungswidrig
Das Bundesverfassungsgericht hat das umstrittene Gesetz zur Vorratsdatenspeicherung in seiner jetzigen Form für verfassungswidrig erklärt, da es nach Ansicht der Karlsruher Richter gegen Artikel 10 Absatz 1 des Grundgesetzes und damit gegen das Fernmeldegeheimnis verstößt. ASUS makes DR-900 e-reader official
We've spent all our time hearing about a DR-950, but today at CeBIT ASUS has trotted out a DR-900 as its first 9-inch ebook reader. It doesn't appear manifestly different from what we've heard and seen already, with WiFi connectivity augmented with a 3G option, and a battery life rated to last a pretty radical 10,000 pages on a single charge. The interface on show clearly invites touch interaction, and we can fill in a few gaps with what we know of the DR-950, namely a 1024 x 768 resolution on a Sipix panel. EU deckelt die Kosten fürs Daten-Roaming
Handybenutzer aus der Europäischen Union brauchen sich nicht mehr vor allzu bösen Überraschungen bei der Handyrechnung fürchten. Crystal discovery could pave the way for new generation of computer chips
The discovery is still literally in the building blocks stage, but a team of researchers from Florida State University say that four new so-called "multiferroic" crystals they've identified could eventually lead to a "new generation" of computer chips. Those new chips would apparently not only be able to expand the capacity of storage devices by 1,000 to a million times but, since data would be written both electrically and magnetically, they'd also be far more secure. As if that wasn't enough, the researchers also say any future chips would have "far less environmental impact" than current chips, as they wouldn't rely on lead as chips now do. Die Free Software Foundation Latin America (FSFLA) hat Linux-2.6.33-libre veröffentlicht. Skripte entfernen dabei alle Teile aus dem Linux-Kernel, die die FSFLA als unfrei ansieht. Google hat mit Picnik einen Online-Dienst für Fotobearbeitung übernommen. Wie Google in seinem offiziellen Blog bekannt gab, war Picnik einer der ersten Cloud-basierten Dienste, mit der sich Bilder innerhalb des Browsers anpassen und mit Effekten versehen ließen. Umfrage: Tauschbörsennutzung geht um 25 Prozent zurück
Die Zahl illegaler Musikdownloads über Peer-to-Peer-Netzwerke ist in den USA 2009 um 25 Prozent zurückgegangen. Das ist das Ergebnis einer Umfrage der NPD Group. Der Anteil der Internetnutzer, die im vergangenen Jahr mindestens einen Song aus einer Tauschbörse geladen haben, ist auf 14 Prozent gesunken, im Vergleich zu 18 Prozent im Jahr davor und 19 Prozent in den Jahren 2006 und 2007.

Why doesn't Apple get Intel's best chips anymore?

Gigabyte T1000 takes a new twist on life with Atom N470 and a multitouch display
Ever get the feeling that what you see on paper just isn't going to be as good in person? That's sort of how we felt today when we stopped by Gigabyte's CeBIT booth to get a look at its newly announced T1000 netvertible. On the spec front the T1000 has everything we could possibly want in a netbook -- a new 1.83GHz Atom N470, 2GB of RAM, a chiclet keyboard and a 1366 x 768-resolution multitouch display -- but in our few minutes of use things were far from rainbows and butterflies. The resistive touch panel required a pretty firm press, and when in slate mode there's no buttons (or accelerometer) for rotating the device. While we liked the chiclet keyboard, we'll never understand why Gigabyte has kept the two mouse buttons on the sides of the touchpad. We realize that we may be jumping to conclusions too quickly here, so we'll let you decide for y

Intel Atom N455 and N475 mysteriously popup on ASUS placards
We don't really know what to make of this, but while battling the onslaught of new netbooks at the ASUS's CeBIT booth we noticed some peculiar new Intel Atom processors on a few signs. As you can see above it looks like the Eee PC 1015PE will not only be available with the current N450 and the newly announced N470 Pine Trail processors, but also unannounced N455 and N475 CPUs. Windows Phone 7 Series themes for WinMo abound in dev forums
We know that it ain't always practical or desirable to put money down on a phone every time a new OS or interface comes out -- so what is a gadget hound to do when they realize their hardware won't be supported by Windows Phone 7 Series? Pioneer intros AV receiver with more iPhone control
Pioneer on Monday put out a pair of new AV receivers highlighted most by their tight link with Apple's handhelds. At the top of the mix, the VSK-820-K has the iPhone-approved USB connection but expands on it with an iPhone Control button: where the receiver's own controls normally take over, the button can force the receiver to hand back control and let the listener pick from the touchscreen of an iPhone or iPod touch.
