Sony speaks about VAIO P, evidently thinks it's not a netbook
What's up with companies suddenly not wanting to call their netbooks, um, netbooks? Sony's Mike Abary sat down with LaptopMag in order to discuss the VAIO P, and as always, the company didn't hesitate to shoot off a few more-than-controversial tidbits. For starters, Mr. Abary insinuated that the 8-inch machine wasn't actually a good fit for the netbook category, noting that "the type of premium customer it is targeting probably doesn't even know what a netbook is."

ASUS debuts 18.4-inch W90 gaming laptop at CES 2009
Got an itch for a gaming laptop that's big enough to span the laps of both you and your lover? ASUS has you covered. Here in the desert, the outfit has introduced a potent 18.4-inch gaming rig with a 1080p panel, twin ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4870 X2 GPUs, three RAM slots (a world's first, mind you) stuffed with 6GB of DDR2 memory, a Core 2 Duo processor, a half dozen (seriously) Altec Lansing speakers and a Turbo Gear function that will enable users to overclock the system and boost performance by as much as 25%. A few more configurations are available, including one with a 17-inch panel, an NVIDIA graphics option, dual HDDs, an optional Blu-ray drive and enough ports to put your average desktop to shame.Filed under:

Dell introduces XPS 625 gaming rig
Dell has been pretty laptop-heavy at CES so far, but it looks to be balancing things out a bit today, with it introducing its new gamer-minded XPS 625 desktop. This one is AMD through and through, and includes your choice of AMD Phenom or Phenom II Black Edition processors, ATI Radeon HD4670 or HD4850 graphics cards (in single or CrossFireX configurations), and some other suitably high-end specs all around, including up 8GB of RAM, a whole host of hard drive options and, of course, an AlienFX custom lighting system to remind you just why you bought it. Polaroid PoGo Instant Digital Camera debuts at CES
We heard that Polaroid would be punching out a PoGo-infused camera in 2009, and it only took 'em eight days into the new year to do just that. Today at CES, the $199 PoGo Instant Digital Camera is making its grand entrance, utilizing the tried-and-true ZINK printing technology. Sadly (and we do mean sadly), there's not even a mention of how many megapixels this thing boasts, which is a pretty telling sign that you won't be getting SD850IS-type quality out of it. Nevertheless, it'll print out ink-free 2- x 3-inch images

Palm Pre in-depth impressions, video, and huge hands-on gallery
We just sat down with Palm for a more in-depth look at the device, and here are our takeaways. First off, the software and hardware they're showing right now aren't the final versions. They're updating and tweaking as we speak, so some of the features haven't been implemented yet. Our take? The UI is incredibly well thought out and smooth. Animations going in and out of apps, and all of the menus and switching are done with a grace and simplicity that we rarely see on any device. The UI outclasses most of its competition on a number of levels, and actually may be quite a bit more revolutionary than the iPhone. The multitasking works like a charm, and reps say you can push it quite hard before you'll need to close applications. One of the most fascinating components of the UI is that when you're zoomed out to cards,

AMD talks up mildly ambiguous graphics supercomputer
It's not entirely clear what the purpose of AMD's newest supercomputer is, but it's pretty safe to say that the company is making it out to be something better than it is. All harshness aside, the so-called Fusion Render Cloud will reportedly be the planet's fastest graphics supercomputer. It sounds like the machine will be good for farming out tasks, and more specifically, for "real-time rendering of film and visual effects graphics on an unprecedented scale." Evidently AMD's hoping that gaming firms tap into the beast in order to develop and deploy next-generation game content, so that probably means it's worthless for you. But hey, it sounds awesome, right?Filed under:

JVC's latest boomboxes do touch control, iPod integration
Full-blown boomboxes definitely aren't as popular as they once were, but there's still something curiously attractive about buying a music system that can be slung upside one's shoulder when the mood strikes you. To that end, JVC has introduced a new trio in its micro audio system, with the UX-GN6 boasting a "wake-up" sensor that turns the rig on when motion is spotted and a "laser touch" control feature, which is a sophisticated way of saying touch sensitive. Obviously, all three play nice with iPods, and they'll all be available in around two months for $99.95, $149.95 and $199.95 for the UX-G200, UX-LP5 and the UX-GN6, respectively.

Video: iriver WAVE-HOME hands-on

The video after the jump doesn't quite do justice to the smoothness of the interface, but your mileage may vary depending on the fatness of your fingers. iriver reps told us that they estimate the unit to be priced at less than $400 to make affordable enough for people to buy more than one. JVC's GY-HM100 / GY-HM700 ProHD camcorders capture QuickTime straight to SDHC
Before buying either the JVC GY-HM100 / GY-HM700, you better be darn well married to Apple's Final Cut Pro. Said ProHD camcorders are the industry's first in the solid state line to store files in native QuickTime format onto SDHC cards. Apple's pushing the fact that users don't have to transcode or re-wrap prior to editing, and considering that each one cam can hold twin SDHC cards, you'll be able to capture a maximum of 64GB before needing to reload. And just think, this time next year the successor will hit with dual SDXC support, giving buyers a maximum capacity of 4TB. Decisions, decisions.Filed under:

Dell previews new G-Series monitors
Hot on the heels of Dell's new XPS Studio laptop release, the company's back with its G-Series LED monitors. We're assuming that the G stands for "green," 'cos they're really working the tree-hugging angle on this one -- pointing out that widescreen LED flat panels consume less than half the power of comparable CRTs, and that their designs incorporate "environmentally preferable" materials. Two models are currently available -- the G2210 measures 22-inches, boasting 1680 x 1050 resolution and should fetch $279, while the G2410 24-inch boasts 1920 x 1080 (HD) resolution, with an asking price of $359. Both models are planned for late February.

Casio's EX-FS10 and EX-FC100 compacts burst faster than your DSLR
Casio knows a thing or two about high-speed image capture as demonstrated over the last year and half. Now they've squashed that innovative circuitry and imaging technology into compact cameras offering high-speed 30 shots-per-second, 6 megapixel still image burst rates and high-speed movies at up to 1,000 fps. Amazingly, Casio's 9.1 megapixel EX-FS10 does this in a 16.3-mm thin compact shooter with a not so amazing 2.5-inch LCD and 3x zoom lacking any kind of optical image or sensor stabilization. The 9.1 megapixel

Four more compact cameras from Casio: EX-Z400, EX-Z270, EX-S12, and "sleek and sturdy" EX-S5. The top end of these lower-end shooters is the Z400 (pictured above) which features a wide-angle 28mm, 4x optical zoom, 3.0-inch LCD, CCD-shift anti-shake, and 550-shot battery. The Z270 drops the LCD down to 2.7-inches while the 12.1 megapixel S12 drops the zoom to 3x. Bringing up the rear is the 10.1 megapixel EX-S5 with YouTube capture mode for those who want (or need, frankly) to keep it simple. Sorry no 30fps burst or super slow mo' in this lot. Prices will range from $300 for the Z400 on down to $180 for the S5 when these pop for retail in March.Gallery:

Echostar's new DVR UI kills the number pad, long live the touch pad
At the Echostar press event today the new 922 UI and remote was unveiled and what do you know the number pad was replaced with a touch pad. So now instead of direct dialing a number you select the numbers on the screen (pictured after the jump) with a touch pad which is similar to a touch pad on most laptops. We're not sure how we feel about this, it has promise, but we admit it'll be hard to give up the numbers.

MSI X-Slim 320 vs MacBook Air... fight!
You knew the comparisons were inevitable, but have you braced yourself for how incredibly similar these two laptops are? MSI's new X-Slim 320 13.3-inch ultraportable is a teensy bit wider and a teensy bit thicker than the MacBook Air, but most of the dimensions, layouts and curves are uncannily alike. As for build quality, MSI obviously suffers a bit for its netbook heritage. The plastics aren't stellar, and the keyboard, while delightfully full size, is a tad squishy, but there's still no denying that this is a pretty wild deal for this very particular form factor -- plus that built-in 3G, VGA and Ethernet are just rubbing it in Apple's face.Gallery:

Choosing the right option isn't easy, but if rumors currently swirling about Google turn out to be accurate it seems the company is leaning toward the former when it comes to its network routers. Big G currently relies on hardware from Juniper Networks but may be looking to develop something in-house to handle its copious quantities of bits. The company is issuing a firm "no comment," but the mere suggestion of Jupiter's biggest client turning coat was enough to send its stock plummeting 5 percent. [Via

New HDMI Format by End of H1 2009
The HDMI Licensing corporation, which is defining the HDMI format, announced that it will deeply revised the current specifications by the end of H1 2009. Among the new features, the 5 most important ones are:
- The HDMI cable will support Ethernet signal
- The support for audio data is back: one will be able to send TV audio information to an A/V recorder only via a HDMI cable.
- Bandwidth will be increase to support forthcoming video format (4kx2k and 3D).
- A new specification of the HDMI port will be defined and designed to be used in cards

Theses changes are the most important ones announced since the release of the HDMI 1.0 version. However, it will most likely upset customers who invested in HDMI devices expecting that this format was matured and fully defined when it was released

SDXC: New SD Card Format
The flash memory market has been evolving very rapidly over the last few years, but is nevertheless massively affected by the current economic slow down. Among features, the capacity and data transfer speed of our flash memory card have been the main two factors used by manufacturers to offer new/faster products. This is true with the freshly emerging SSD market too.
For our memory cards, massively used today in all handheld devices, from mobile phones to camcorder, we can now store GB of data on a plastic-wrapped card of less than half a square centimeter. Defining new formats is also a way to keep a competitive market alive, and this is especially true for SD card. A new SD format has been announced, the SDXC. It is defined to replace the current SDHC which was implemented to succeed to the previous SD format. With the SDXC we could now get cards featuring storage capacities ranging fro;

Unified UI previews the future of Samsung hardware
If Samsung devices are your preferred flavor, get very familiar with the interface pictured above. Eased in amongst product announcements during today's CES keynote is the news that all their devices -- camcorders, HDTVs, digital cameras, PMPs and all --will be sharing this style going forward. Seeming to follow the example set by Sony's XMB, and hopefully adding momentum to a trend others will continue, the idea is that users pick it up on one device, and can carry that experience to future purchases without a sharp learning curve. As much as we enjoy figuring out where the contrast setting is for the 20th time, early adopters have more than enough options to memorize. Of course, unified doesn't mean static, and this interface should be plenty cus

Samsung shows off MBP200 pico projector
Tiny projectors seem to be popping up everywhere, filling press releases with amazing promise. However, it's still not too often that you actually get to see the things in action, so we were glad to see Samsung displaying not one but two prototypes of their upcoming MBP200 pico projector running for all to see. The Digital Experience room was rather well lit, not ideal conditions for a wee projector, but it threw a respectably bright image on a screen about three feet away, shown above. Not much bigger than a cell phone, the MBP200 sports an integrated 480 x 320 projector pl

The half dozen Full HD models, however, are definitely worth peeking. Dell's XPS 1340 and 1640 get official, latter gets reviewed
The new XPS 1340 and 1640 laptops just appeared yesterday, and now (a mere day late) have been given the blessing of officialdom from Dell. Of course, we already knew all there was to know about them when it comes to specs, so rather more interesting is the first review of the bigger of the two, also called the XPS 16. The 2.4GHz machine scored high marks both when it comes to aesthetics and overall performance, but the thing got a little too hot for comfort, costs a good bit more than the competition, and those glossy screens are always controversial. Overall it sounds like a nice machine if you have the dough -- and don't mind a little glare.

MacWorld Expo 09: Interview with Lars Felber from Elgato
elgato is well known and renowned for its famous eyeTV solution allowing Mac users to watch TV on their Mac. If elgato is massively present at this expo, Lars Ferber indicates that it will most likely be the last one as "it smells end-of-life".
The last version of eyeTV offers a iTunes-like interface, with the list of sources on the left part (including the "smart recording"), the main window displaying the current video or the list of programs. However, elgato is attached to its eyeTV remote, as the icon of its product.

MacWorld Expo : ModBook Hands On
Yesterday, The Woz himself (aka Steve Wozniak) unveiled the product which was tagged by many websites as a vaporware, the ModBook. The ModBook is a MacBook with a grafted touch screen and a radiofrequencies and pressure-sensitive pencil. In other words, it is like working with a screen/tablet, but with a MacBook.
You simply need to purchase the kit from Axiotron (1299 USD), and you can install it yourself on your MacBook (only the plastic models, does not work with unibody yet). Once installed on the MacBook enclosure, you simply use the pencil as a mouse pointer, pressing on the screen to click, etc. The pencil features programmable buttons, for setting up some special/dedicated functions, such a the right-click. There is a button on the top left corner of the ModBook enclosure to switch the MacBook on/off, and another button let you switch

AMD finally launches Phenom II and its Dragon desktop platform
It was a struggle getting it "officially" out the door, and the reviews are already lackluster, but AMD's 45nm, quad-core Phenom II has finally arrived. It's available in two flavors, the 2.8GHz X4 920 and the 3.0GHz X4 940 Black Edition, going for $235 and $275, respectively. AMD's naturally touting the ostensible cost savings of the chips -- they're supposed to split the difference between Intel's Core 2 Quad and Core i7 processor -- but in reality they seems to trail Intel's offerings pretty soundly on the price / performance curve. The accompanying Dragon platform includes a Phenom II proc, 4800-series Radeon HD graphics and a 790-series motherboard, all of which should combine for low power consumption -- up to 40 percent compared to Phenom processors. Where the Phenom II definitely wins is

It is also possible to acquire other memory cards also containing 1000 pieces arranged by topic for $39,99 which is an excellent deal. On the other hand, and is the downside of this price, it seems impossible to listen to this music elsewhere than on this player.

Video: Seagate introduces Free Agent Theater HD, designs it like a Betamax player
We're going to give you just a moment to sit back and peer at the image above, and we'll politely remind you that this object was likely designed in the year 2008. For whatever reason, Seagate has chosen just about the ugliest design imaginable and applied it to its Free Agent Theater HD, though word on the street is that the user interface is actually a horse of a different color. The drive is simply a multimedia HDD that enables users to pop drives in that are full of digital media for easy viewing on the TV. It's expected to drop in March for $229.99 (250GB) / $299.99 (500GB), or those on a tight budget (or Free Agent Go HDD owners, actually) can opt for a $129.

Can you imagine if Dunder Mifflin landed a contract with HP, and every single PC in The Office was replaced with a TouchSmart all-in-one? Yeah, hilariousness would undoubtedly ensue. Nevertheless, the company has decided to push its dx9000 into the corporate arena. The business-class device is pre-loaded with Windows Vista Business 64, an Intel Core 2 Duo P8400 CPU, 4GB of RAM, a 320GB hard drive, a 22-inch panel and a Virtual LAN driver. Outside of that, we can't really see any major differences between the suited version and the consumer edition, but it's all about marketing, anyway. Whip out the Pro Card next month, as each of these will set you back a

GiiNii's Movit Mini WiFi Android tablet hands-on
We just spent some quality time playing with GiiNii's Movit Mini WiFi Android tablet, which might be one of the best things we've seen at CES so far -- think of it as the Android version of the iPod touch and you'll get why we're so stoked. The unit features a 4.3-inch, 480 x 272 resistive touchscreen (sigh), and it's got a soft keyboard for text entry -- they couldn't tell us if it's running Cupcake or not, but the keyboard worked just fine as we were playing with it. A built-in mic and front-facing camera lend themselves to out-of-the-box Skype support, there's also Bluetooth and a built-in speaker. Sadly, there's only 256MB of internal storage, but there's an microSD slot for expansion. All we got for pricing was "less than the iPod touch" -- we'll see how close GiiNii gets when this this guy and

T-Mobile gets official with Shadow -- yep, just Shadow
T-Mobile doesn't seem too concerned about the fact that there already is a Shadow -- it's the very phone they're trying to replace here, actually -- but whatever, it's Windows Mobile, it's HTC, and it's finally here. The new model thankfully features WiFi and full support for T-Mobile's UMA-based HotSpot calling service, but spec-wise, it's kinda the same as the outgoing piece (which possibly explains the carried-over name). On-board you'll find a 2 megapixel cam with video capture, microSD support up to 8GB, spin wheel navigation, Windows Mobile 6.1 Standard (read: no touch), a QVGA display, and all the myFaves you can handle. It'll be available in Black Burgundy and White Mint in "the coming weeks."Filed under:

Lenovo All-in-One IdeaCentre A600 hands-on
We just got a chance to check out Lenovo's All-in-One IdeaCentre A600, featuring the motion-based remote control that doubles as a VoIP handset. Three minutes into the tennis game, we managed to toss the remote into an adjacent HDTV and pulled our shoulder out of alignment. We couldn't call for help -- the VoIP wasn't functional -- but we did manage to snap some screens with our good arm. Gallery: Lenovo IdeaCentre A600 All-in-One Desktop hands-on at CES 2009

Nyko brings Wand Wii remote, Charge Station EX and Kama Charge kit to CES
What would CES be without a little video gaming, huh? Thanks to Nyko, we won't ever have to find out (at least in 2009), as it's bringing a smattering of new Nintendo Wii accessories to the desert. Kicking things off right is the simply titled Wand, which is said to be the "world's most advanced alternative to the Wii remote." Aside from doing everything the Wiimote does, the April-bound device also features the firm's Trans-Port technology, which "enables control and vibration feedback to be electrically replicated on a compatible attachment accessory." Up next is the Charge Station EX ($34.99 this April), which improves upon its successor by adding a LED battery indicator and a "new sleek look." Finally, the Kam

Off Topic: ASUS EEE Keyboard. Cool
Yes, this is an Apple Blog and of course we love to focus on Apple products but it never hurts to look around the technology landscape just a bit. ASUS, the company that invented the Netbook category, this year may have invented the "Keybook" category. They've stuffed a whole PC, including small monitor into a slightly oversized keyboard (Apple // be damned!). Specs haven't been given but surely it carries your garden variety Netbook 1.6ish GHz Atom processor and too little RAM and hard drive to run Vista.
Nice work ASUS, we like this concept even if it doesn't find its way into our homes. It is also good to see Apple has some competition in the innovation department. From Giz:

The firm is expanding its DVDirect line by two, and while one of 'em (the VRD-MC10) has been released in Japan previously, this marks the first time it'll ship to American consumers.

Samsung officially introduces 2233RZ, the 22-inch 3D panel for gamers with two eyes
3D gaming with flickery goggles is old-school tech that won't die, and is poised for a big-time comeback this year. Samsung is at the forefront, hoping you'll go all cross-eyed over its upcoming 2233RZ. The $399 panel, shipping in April, measures 22-inches and sports a healthy 1680 x 1050 resolution, 20,000:1 contrast ratio, 300 nits brightness, and a 120Hz refresh rate. If that sounds familiar it should, as those specs all match the earlier 2233Hz, with the obvious difference being that you can split those cycles across two eyes -- 60-per -- for some immersive 3D action. Yes, goggles are required, but they'll be included, as will be compatibility wit

Panasonic introduces wireless, 1-inch thick TC-P54Z1 VIERA plasma
Here at the Panasonic press conference at CES 2009, the company finally woke us up with a stunningly thin 1-inch thick plasma: the all new Z1, or the TC-P54Z1 VIERA, in particular. Little is being said about the panel for now, though we are told that it'll be wireless (via an undisclosed standard) right out of the box.Filed under: CES, Displays, HDTV, Home Entertainment

Linksys Wireless Home Audio and Media Hub NAS hands-on
We just snuck a quick look at the new Linksys home media gear, the Wireless Home Audio system and Media Hub NAS, and it's pretty much what you'd expect. For all of Cisco's talk of platform and back-end and consumer love, the end product is actually pretty humdrum. We can't speak to the actual setup and content integration -- which will naturally be Cisco's strong suit -- but the actual hardware doesn't seem to scream consumer love. The interface on the Touchscreen Remote is pretty slow and a far cry from the polish of the Sonos system -- the unit's natural competitor -- especial

ASUS G50 prototype with additional 4.3-inch Tegra-based PC
We have a few more details on that prototype ASUS laptop we caught on video last night. Essentially two computers in one chassis, the modified M50 sports a separate Tegra APX-based 4.3-inch touchpad PC below they keyboard, for an effect somewhat reminiscent of (but nothing like) good 'ol SideShow. More than a second display, Tegra's "system on a chip" architecture allows for lightning fast boot times and excellent picture quality -- and since it runs off the same power source as its Atom-based host, the little guy should get up to 12 hours battery life when playing back video.
