Apple: "the iPhone is a gaming console"
According to extremely reliable and embarrassingly handsome Engadget sources, at an iPhone event held today, John Geleynse (AKA Director of Technology Evangelism at Apple) made some statements regarding the iPhone platform that should seriously raise a few eyebrows. During an ADC "iPhone Tech Talk" in San Jose, Geleynse apparently waxed excited about the potential for the handheld as a viable threat to the DS (and the PSP by proxy), calling the iPhone a "gaming console" and claiming that "it's not a phone, it's a console experience." Pretty bold talk about a device that has yet to really prove its gaming mettle, but nothing new from the Apple camp as far as we're concerned. Considering these comments alongside those from a

Zehntausende Kreditkartendaten der Berliner Landesbank sind ausgespäht worden, berichtet die Frankfurter Rundschau. EFi-X shuts down EFi-X USA, says it doesn't support Mac clones
The Mac cloning soap opera just keeps taking crazy twists and turns -- Art Studios Entertainment, makers of the EFi-X dongle, have shut down EFi-X USA's plans to sell "Millennium" machines capable of running OS X just hours after they were announced. ASE CEO Davide Rutigliano sent us a statement saying that EFi-X USA was misinterpreting ASE's EFi-X certification program, that ASE will "NEVER sell machines or condone the sale of machines that compete with any brand," and that he personally ordered the project abandoned. Indeed, a visit to EFi-X USA's page confirms that the machines have been killed, although we're unsure what the terse statement "EFi-X USA LLC fights the clones and the clonemakers" is supposed to mean. AT&T, T-Mobile voicemail easily hacked
Both AT&T and T-Mobile today said they have agreed to settle lawsuits accusing each of overstating the security of their cellular networks' voicemail systems. Details on Azeroth-traversing treadmill revealed
Well, it looks like those keen to attempt their own real life trek across Azeroth (or the virtual world of their choice) now have a fairly straightforward course of action to follow, as the originators of the MMO-connected treadmill have just posted some detailed plans for the rig on the ever-useful Instructables website. EFi-X readies desktop Millenium Mac-clones

MEMS gyroscopes rumored to hit array of phones in 2009
Details on this one are freakishly scarce, but DigiTimes has it that a number of recognizable handset makers are looking to incorporate MEMS gyroscopes into their 2009 smartphones. It's anticipated that such devices would be used to sense motion in one form or another, with brands like Nokia, Motorola, Samsung, LG, Sony Ericsson and Apple (we know you're thinking, so stop) expected to welcome the tech with open arms. Barbie P520 cellphone turns up in China
Now, it's entirely possible that this isn't an official Barbie cellphone (or even an actual cellphone) but, if you're looking for something that's more Barbie-ish and, well, less cellphone-like than your usual phone, you may want to consider this new P520 model that recently turned up in China. Apparently, this one includes 2-inch,176 x 220 display, a 1.3 megapixel camera, "up to 2GB of expandable memory" (we're guessing a microSD card slot), built-in Bluetooth, not one but two SIM card slots and, yes, an actual mirror. It's sometimes easy to forget that ASUS actually makes a whole host of non-Eee branded products, but the company has reminded us of is roots today with four new VH-series LCD monitors, each of which boast the desirable-to-some 16:9 aspect ratio. Nintendo faces class-action lawsuit, hotter-than-ever sales for Wii
Nintendo's fended off class-action lawsuits over "defective" Wiimote straps in the past, and if you remember, they also replaced about 3.2 million of the straps (a/k/a "all of them") around the same time too -- way back in December of 2006. Well, the same lawyer's back for round two with a new, nearly identical suit, but this one also alleges that Nintendo knew that the defect existed and was negligent in their failure to report the problem to the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Copy/Paste kinda sorta works on iPhone with some trickery
Well, this is a hack in the most literal of senses but it could be useful in a handful of circumstances
Unlike other approaches, it works with the two apps that matter most, Mail and Safari, and gets around Apple's onerous App Store terms through a clever combination of javascript bookmarks and web services.

AT&T Home activation returns

Addonics USB to Ethernet Adapter
Engadget points us to a great little tool that just came out of the gate. Addonics NAS (network attached storage) adapter is a little block with Gigabit Ethernet in and USB out. This basically allows any and all of your USB HDD's and USB Sticks a free (or $55 retail) ride on your network. It has SMB and FTP so it works on Mac but AFP would be a bit better. We just got word that there was going to be a big software update tomorrow at Apple. Specifics weren't given but it is likely that it will be 10.5.6. AI had the news earlier today that it was coming soon. How does our source know? We'll tell you if he's right tomorrow. He might be on to something

EFi-X decides to tempt Apple's lawyers, will start shipping OS X-capable machines
We've always been intrigued by the EFI-X dongle that fools OS X into running on stock Intel machines, Software Update and all, and now it looks like the company is taking things one step further -- it's planning on shipping pre-built machines capable of running Apple's OS. The EFi-X Millennium 4 will sport an overclocked 3.8Ghz Core 2 Quad, 4GB of RAM, and a GeForce 8800 GTS graphics card in an Antec P180 case, all for $1,899 plus the $199 EFi-X dongle. The idea is to avoid any Psystar-style legal troubles by leaving the purchase and installation of OS X up to the end user, but apparently no one at EFI-X USA has talked to a lawyer or even read our previous posts

Gartner senkt Prognose für Unternehmenssoftware

AT&T wraps Wayport deal, Starbucks Wi-Fi
AT&T on Friday said it has successfully closed its buyout out Wayport. The deal hands over control of Wayport's Wi-Fi hotspots and gives AT&T about 20,000 access points within the US and a total of 80,000 worldwide. No mention has been made as to if and when Wayport will switch to using AT&T's official Wi-Fi system and how soon users of either service will have a common billing system.

82 Prozent der Onlinekäufer fürchten Identitätsdiebstahl
In einer von YouGov im Auftrag von Verisign durchgeführten Umfrage unter fast 1000 Verbrauchern in Deutschland haben 82 der Befragten angegeben, bei ihren Shopping-Ausflügen ins Internet um ihre persönlichen Daten besorgt zu sein. Das Vertrauen in eine Website bei Interaktionen und der Angabe vertraulicher Daten war für 74 Prozent "überaus wichtig". Nokia to launch HSPA modems in early 2009 -- take that Intel
After failing to reach terms with Intel to put Nokia's HSDPA data chip inside Santa Rosa laptops back in early 2007, Nokia is going it alone. Tapio Markki, Nokia's vice president for hardware platform components, told Reuters that Nokia will ship its first HSPA "Internet stick" (we presume that means USB and PC Card formats) in early 2009. A fuel cell charger will arrive in 2009
Even though we spoke a lot about fuel-cell batteries during 2008, as yet there is no concrete example in the public domain. The first will be probably the universal charger that MTI Micro intends to market in 2009.
The Mobion functions thanks to cartridge containing the methanol and will be able to reload via a USB connector the majority of the nomad apparatuses. A methanol load should make it possible to reload fully a mobile phone about ten time. Admittedly, it is rather large, but it is the first example of the beginning of the next revolution for the nomads in the coming decade.

Microsoft weitet Sicherheitswarnung für Internet Explorer aus
Microsoft hat eine am Mittwoch veröffentlichte Warnung vor einer ungepatchten Schwachstelle im Internet Explorer ausweiten müssen. Laut Christopher Budd vom Microsoft Security Response Center (MSRC) ist nicht nur die Version 7 des Microsoft-Browsers von der Zero-Day-Lücke betroffen, sondern auch Internet Explorer 5, 6 und 8. Zudem tritt der Fehler im XML-Parser nicht nur unter Windows XP und Windows Server 2003, sondern unter allen Versionen von Windows auf.

Drucker und Multifunktionsgeräte werden teurer
Der Branchenverband Bitkom, der Hersteller von Druckern, Scannern und Kopiergeräten vertritt, hat sich mit der Verwertungsgesellschaft VG Wort über die Höhe einer Urhebervergütung geeinigt. Dem am zehnten Dezember in Berlin ausgehandelten Reprographievertrag nach, werden Urheberabgaben auf Scanner, Thermo- und Tintenfaxgeräte, Laser-Telefax, Tintendrucker und Multifunktionsgeräte sowie Laserdrucker in Höhe von fünf bis 15 Euro fällig. Bei Laser-Multifunktionsgeräten und Kopierern liegen die Abgaben zwischen 25 und 87,50 Euro. Die Vergütungen müssen, pro seit Jahresbeginn verkauftem Gerät, an die Verwertungsgesellschaft abgeführt werden.

Nachdem Erscheinen der Beta-Version machte das Programm Schlagzeilen und konnte am ersten Tag bereits 1 Prozent Marktanteil erlangen. Außergewöhnliche iPod touch-Werbung auf Yahoo!
Apple hat in den USA sehenswerte Werbung für den "Mehrspaßdennje iPod" geschaltet. Das iPod touch-Banner auf Yahoo! Games bezieht den kompletten Navigationsbereich von Yahoo! in die Animation mit ein.
Falls die Anzeige bei Yahoo! nicht mehr zu sehen ist, gibt's das Ganze bei 9 to 5 Mac auf Video dokumentiert. Die Idee ist übrigens nicht neu, Nintendo hat zum Release des Wii-Spiels "Wario Land: Shake it" die komplette YouTube-Seite zerlegt.

iTunes-Cleaner TuneUp für Mac
TuneUp macht es sich zur Aufgabe, Ordnung in die iTunes-Mediathek zu bringen. Über die Windows-Version haben wir bereits berichtet, jetzt ist die iTunes-Erweiterung auch für Macs verfügbar. Bei der Installation auf dem Mac gräbt sich TuneUp überraschend tief ins System ein und startet mit unangenehmen Verzögerungen parallel zu iTunes, das TuneUp-Fenster dockt rechts an das iTunes-Fenster an. Wer nun meint, er könne das Programm testen, liegt falsch: TuneUp will zuerst eine Registrierung mit E-Mail-Adresse und weiteren persönlichen Daten - das war für uns der Punkt, nach einem Uninstaller zu suchen.

Andy Grove pushing Intel to manufacture electric car batteries
Former Intel chairman, Andy Grove, has been a prominent supporter of plug-in hybrid automobiles ever since he left his post at Intel. Now, in his role as Intel advisor, Grove is pushing CEO, Paul Otellini, to diversify Intel by manufacturing advanced batteries for plug-in electric vehicles. The future of the exclusive contract for Orange and the iPhone - 17 December
Source : Le Figaro On December 17 the council of competition should consider the complaint lodged by Bouygues Telecom which reproaches Orange for its contract of exclusiveness in sale of the iPhone. If the council considers that this exclusiveness is abusive, Apple will be obliged to offer its telephone to the other operators.
Orange certainly has most to lose with the ending of this contract of exclusiveness even though it had at least the merit to start again the commercial war (a little) between the 3 operators.

HP will use Boston Power batteries
At the beginning of the year, we have spoken about the batteries made by Boston Power.
Thanks to new combinations of alloys, these batteries make it possible to store approximately 40% d' additional energy, and importantly to be recharged to 80% of their capacity in only 30 minutes. The first manufacturer who will equip his machines with them will be HP. We do not know if Apple is going to also use these (lets hope so), especially as Quickertek markets an external battery now intended for MacBook and using the components of Boston Power. It allows an increase of battery life of the MacBook to a more comfortable duration of 8 to 12 hours, but has a rather significant volume of 23x15x2,54 cm with a weight of almost 1,5 kg.

Apple möchte 3D-Benutzeroberfläche patentieren lassen
3D ist (wieder einmal) der letzte Schrei in Hollywood und wenn Apple tatsächlich die in einem Patentantrag beschriebene Benutzeroberfläche einsetzt, könnte das Mac OS X der Zukunft ein filmreifes Erlebnis werden. Sinn und Zweck des "Mehrdimensionalen Schreibtischs" ist die bessere Ausnutzung des Platzes auf dem Bildschirm. Dies würde Anwendern noch mehr Platz geben, um für (Un-)Ordnung auf dem Bildschirm zu sorgen.

Blade CX2 UAV flies for six glorious seconds, crashes
Sure, there are plenty of wacky and awesome UAVs out there, but this one, the Blade CX2, or "Wash UAV" is quite charming in all of its wires-hanging-out glory. It's a complex little machine, too. Built using an Arduino Mini, ultrasonic sensors, and a compass module, the vehicle is able to fly autonomously and sense things like walls and the floor. Its flight is short-lived -- just six seconds -- but the video is rife with riveting commentary explaining how various parts of the Blade function, so check it out after the break.
