Nokia begins construction on Vietnamese production facility
In keeping with Elop's focus on Asia-based production, Nokia's just broken ground on a new manufacturing facility in Vietnam. The site, located in the country's Bac Ninh province, spans over 17 hectacres and is slated to begin production of mobile devices when it's completed in early 2013. Huawei 2011 financials: 20 million smartphones sold yet profit down 53 percent
Huawei's annual earnings report is out and it's a mixed bag, since while turnover increased by 11.7 percent to 203.9 RMB ($32.3 billion), profits plummeted 53 percent to 11.6 billion RMB ($1.8 billion). Revenue from overseas sales (138.4 billion RMB) equated for over half the company's total income and it boasted of having sold 150 million consumer devices, including 20 million smartphones in the year. The company didn't provide reasons for the drop in profit, emphasizing that it's increased R&D spending by 34.2 percent to 23.7 billion RMB ($3.75 billion) and that in any event, it's got around $30 billion of

Denver Broncos to switch to iPad playbooks
The Denver Broncos are transitioning to iPad playbooks for the new season, says the Denver Post. The NFL team previously printed new paper books each week for all of its 120 staff members, including players, coaches, scouts, and others. Each book measured roughly 500 pages, wasting substantial amounts of money and paper.

Norton introduces a password manager, Identity Safe
Norton, better known for its antivirus software, is attempting to take on AgileBits' 1Password with the release of Identity Safe, a password manager for the Mac. Like 1Password, it takes over the task of remembering passwords and generating new ones, keeping the information stored in the cloud. Norton is trying to lure in new customers by offering Identity Safe for free until October 1.
There are versions of Identity Safe available for Mac and iOS. However, unlike 1Password which stands on its own, the iOS app is dependent on having the Mac version of Identity Safe installed.

We were excited about The Hit List a few years ago, with the beta showing a lot of promise, and version 1.0 finally was released in 2011. Now the task-manager software has been updated to version 1.1 for both Mac and the iPhone with the following new features:

Netflix Q1 results: 3 million new streaming subscribers worldwide, record viewing hours
Netflix has posted its earnings report for Q1 of 2012, and reveals its streaming subscriber count in the US is currently 23.4 million, after reaching 21.67 million back in January. While the company noted a net loss of about $5 million, the letter from CEO Reed Hastings and CFO David Wells claimed it is still on a "rapid return" to profitability after last year's missteps and international expansions. Worldwide it now counts a total of 26 million subscribers to the streaming service, although it lost another million or so subscribers to discs, which currently number 10.09 million. Cargo-Bot claimed to be first iPad game made on iPad
Developer Two Lives Left has published Cargo-Bot, a new game for the iPad. The title is perhaps most significant for the way it was created; Two Lives claims that the game is the first to have been programmed entirely on an iPad using Codea, its own iOS utility. The project is said to have taken several months, and a special Codea Xcode Template which will only "soon" be available to the public.

ZTE aims at Apple, Samsung with goal of 100m phones

News: Redpark ships GPS to iOS cable
Redpark is now shipping its GPS Cable for the iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch. Facebook updates S-1, adds Q1 earnings, revenue up 45% over last year
Facebook just filed an amended S-1 (that all important document that officially announces its public offering plans) with some new financial info. Now included in the charts and graphs is everything you wanted to know about Q1 of 2012 at Facebook (but were afraid to ask). The new SEC filing reveals that revenues are way up at the social network over last year (a whopping 45 percent higher than Q1 of 2011), but down slightly from last quarter (six percent), settling at a more than respectable $1.058 billion. Samsung 'Galaxy S III' tested, hints massive speed leap
Samsung's GT-i9300, possibly the third-generation Galaxy, has had its performance leaked through inadvertent postings to GLBenchmark. The 3D tests caught by a Phone Arena reader show that the quad-core Exynos 4412 chip in the device looks to beat any existing Android phone, and likely the iPhone 4S, by a wide margin. In the common-use Egypt test, the i9300 would be roughly a third faster than the similarly quad-core Tegra 3 in the international HTC One X and three times faster than Samsung's own Galaxy S II.

Flight+ is a great app for the savvy traveler
There are a lot of travel apps. Some are great, some are good, some are me too. I've taken a look at the just released Flight+, and I'm pretty impressed. This app is loaded with features too numerous to mention. It will track every flight at almost every airport anywhere in the world. The app displays delays, gate information and flight delays in real time. There are also handy seating charts.
Weather is included for your destination, along with a ten day forecast. If you have a Tripit account, it will sync automatically. The alerts are comprehensive. Alerts for departure and arrival time changes, gate and terminal changes, flight status changes, and you can set reminders for departures and arrivals.

SkyDrive gets Mac, Windows, iPad apps, drops to 7GB for some
Microsoft quickly confirmed rumors and has posted preview versions of both Windows Vista/7/8 and OS X Lion desktop apps while curbing the reach of its cloud service. The software now lets users more directly organize their cloud storage, automatically syncing anything loaded into a SkyDrive folder and sorting its contents as though it were offline. The iOS app has also been updated (App Store to get native iPad support, including for the higher-resolution visuals of the new iPad along with deleting renaming, and moving files in the cloud.

Dropbox simplifies sharing with file viewer and folder links
Dropbox is one of those tools that makes our lives a lot easier around the Engadget compound and our various satellite lairs. So, it only makes sense that we'd get a little excited when the company updates and improves the file syncing service. Apple's additional security steps could be better
As we've been hearing, Apple is rolling out some "additional security" for App Store customers. When you go to purchase an app, as I just did (it was the free Pocket app, incidentally), you may be prompted to answer three security questions and provide a second email address in case your primary account is compromised. Unfortunately, this 20th century form-based method of enhanced security is just poorly done. Apple, an innovator in so many ways, can do better.

Well-known leaker of pre-release Apple parts TVC-Mall has posted listings for what it claims are some of the first "iPhone 5" parts. The home button replacements come in black and white. NFL's Denver Broncos embrace the iPad

Mountain Lion may get secure password suggestion, sync
Apple is working on more comprehensive password technology for Safari in OS X Mountain Lion, code in the Safari 5.2 beta is said to show. The beta already contains a visible "Passwords" pane under app preferences, but this simply displays passwords which are saved to Keychain Access. Intel continued its Ivy Bridge deployment on Monday by providing extensive detail of the 13 processors that would make up the initial group. The line includes six quad Core i7 processors, including Intel's first truly moderate-power example. Ex-WSJ publisher: Apple's 30% profit sharing ebook agency model is not a conspiracy
As Apple prepares to go to trial to fight the US Department of Justice's claims that the Cupertino company conspired to fix ebook prices with publishers, former publisher of the Wall Street Journal L. Gordon Crovitz has an interesting oped in today's paper which he says that Apple's 30% profit sharing "agency model" with ebook publishers does not amount to the price fixing conspiracy that the DOJ accuses the company of. Supply chain sources claim low-end iPhone due this year
Apple is working on a low-cost iPhone model for release later this year, according to supply chain sources in touch with the China Times. Apple makes a tax deal for Prineville, Oregon data center land
We've heard before that Apple plans to build a data center on land it previously purchased in Oregon, but now the Associated Press reports on part of the cost. The company has reportedly agreed to pay US$150,000 per year to local governments, and has signed off on at least 35 jobs. Those jobs will be paid at a rate that's at least 150% of the average wage in the Oregon county. Finally, according to the AP, Apple will have to invest at least $250 million into the data center building itself.
In return for all of that, Apple will be exempt on property tax payments for the next 15 years. Whether that will be worth it or not depends on exactly how much they build there, but odds are Apple's accoun

The iPad as an IT professional's tool
John Welch over at Ars Technica wrote a wonderful post about using an iPad as a system administrator's tool, noting that Apple's tablet is "an addition, not a replacement" to the many tools that IT pros currently use to complete their daily tasks.

Time Warner's TWC TV app updated to include sports channels
On Friday, Time Warner Cable added a number of national and regional sports networks to the free TWC TV app for iOS and the TWCTV.com Web portal. The new capability lets Time Warner Cable video customers at the Expanded Basic level or higher to watch those networks live from iOS devices or computers inside the home.
While the networks vary based on the region in which the customers are located, they include ESPN, ESPN2, TNT, TBS, MLB Network, NBA TV, NHL Network, and various Fox Sports channels. The Creative Assembly has been making phenomenal Total War games for the PC for years, with deep, intelligent war strategy across several time periods. InMobi: iOS widened small lead over Android in ad share
The total mobile user base is significantly less oriented towards Android than phone market share would suggest, according to research. Apple sued over all touch-based products
FlatWorld, a Pennsylvania company, is suing Apple for patent infringement in California's Northern District Court in San Francisco, according to a report in Patently Apple. The company owns Patent RE43,318 which describes "a testing tool with a touch screen programmed to allow children to directly manipulate or move objects on the screen, and 'hide' them behind other objects."

The other evening, I cracked open a nearly 600-page book by Scott Sigler. (Summary: it was pretty bad, cannot recommend it, but that has nothing to do with this post.) And as I began to read, I soon realized that while the traditional print novel has not changed much in the last few decades, I as a reader had.
For one thing, there was no built-in light source in the book. For another, I could not tap words to define them or adjust the font size presentation to my precise mood. In fact, the entire book for all its narrative value had about as much interactive GUI appeal as, forgive me, a large pile of dead wood.

iPhones smuggled into China in beer bottles
It's pretty easy to understand most of this story. Someone in Hong Kong wanted to get a bunch of iPhones into Shenzen, China, so they decided to smuggle them across the border. That's illegal, but it makes sense. China charges heavy taxes on importing goods like these, and whoever ran this scheme wanted to avoid the tax.
What doesn't make sense, however, is how they did it. The culprit cut open empty beer bottles, placing iPhones inside three at a time, and then resealed the bottles with tape. You can see the full Chinese news report below. Over 200 iPhones were being smuggled in beer bottles.

Deepworld launches Kickstarter project to help fund a Mac beta
When I first met the guys making Deepworld, a 2D sandbox-style building game similar to Minecraft, at GDC in March, I told them that the project would be bigger than they thought. Clear app updated, new themes and helpful tweaks
Clear made a big splash when it was first introduced because the interface was a bold experiment in user interaction. Instead of icons and buttons for functions, most of Clear's interface relies on gestures, or sliding and pinching items to make things happen. It wasn't for everyone, although it was a delight to tinker with. Clear 1.1 maintains that approach, while adding some new features. Clear won't fit the bill for avid "to do" users, as there is still no sync, iPad version, etc. But I use Clear for simple "punch lists," and for that it works great.

SIM-Unlock über Schwachstelle auf Aktivierungsservern von Apple
Die Hackergemeinde hat eine neue Möglichkeit gefunden, alle iPhone-Generationen, auch das iPhone 4S, mit jeder SIM-Karte betreiben zu können. Der Trick, welcher bei diesem SIM-Unlock angewendet wird ist folgender: iTunes wird vorgegaukelt, dass das Gerät eine Kennung besitzt, welche zu der eingelegten SIM-Karte passt. Adobe formally unveils CS6, Creative Cloud, launch event April 23
Adobe has formally announced its upcoming Creative Cloud service, along with Adobe Creative Suite 6, and Adobe will stream a launch event at 10 a.m. PT/1 p.m. ET today, April 23. All products are available for preorder.

seit Tagen und Wochen verbleibt mein Mund in entsetzter O-Stellung, wenn ich auf unsere Mailinglisten und Twitter-Accounts schauen. Da wird unser Landesvorsitzender zerlegt und zerlegt sich selbst, was dann in einer Rücktrittsforderung seiner “Freunde” endet, die sich ja nur Sorgen um ihn machen. Da endet das PAV gegen Bodo wegen eines Formfehlers im Nichts, wofür wir in Talkshows angebrüllt werden. Da kandidiert jemand für den Buvo, der “Mein Kampf” frei zugänglich machen und das Leugnen des Holocausts nicht mehr unter Strafe stellen möchte. Und da begeht Martin Delius den dummen Fehler, das Wachstum der Piraten mit dem Wachstum der NSDAP zu vergleichen, was natürlich wunderbar aus dem Zusammenhang gerissen werden kann.

Intel officially launches Ivy Bridge processors
Intel on Sunday formally launched its Ivy Bridge processor range. The 22-nanometer chips will, as hinted, start off with 13 quad-core processors in the Core i5 and i7 families, primarily focuses on desktops as well as mid-size and large notebooks. Lower-end Core i3 and i5 chips, as well as ultrabook-friendly low-voltage processors, are coming later in the Spring, Intel said.

Fondu for iPhone a decent app to find places to eat in big cities
With the weekend here, our minds turn to food, or more specifically, eating food out. Fondu for the iPhone, is a crowd-sourced app where you can find local restaurants, read mini-reviews and leave some of your own.
Reviews can be published to Facebook, Twitter and Foursquare. Places you like or want to check later can be bookmarked.
The problem with the app is that since it is new, there just isn't a lot in there. Since they have no outside sources for reviews, other than the users, information is pretty sparse. I tried several searches around southern Arizona where I live and found nothing. Expanding my search to the Phoenix area didn't find any reviews either. For now, this app is best for large cities, until there are lots of users submitti
