App Store download cap bumped up to 50MB for OTA downloads
TheNextWeb has confirmed there is a solution to a problem a lot of developers could encounter: If the iPad were to go to a retina display (which it did), application file sizes would increase dramatically. That 20 MB limit on what you can download from the store over-the-air becomes meaningless pretty quickly, especially for universal apps; customers would be stuck with Wi-Fi for purchases. It turns out the solution is to move the cap to 50 megabytes, up from the 20 it was yesterday. Seit der Einführung des App Store sind dess UMTS-Nutzer deutlich eingeschränkt. Bisher hat Apple bei Apps, die größer als 20MB waren, den Download mit einem entsprechenden Hinweis verweigert. Apple releases Mac updates for iPhoto, iTunes, GarageBand and Xcode
Apple has issued updates to the Mac versions of iPhoto, iTunes, GarageBand and Xcode. iPhoto is now up to version 9.2.2, which lets users delete images from Photo Stream. Hands on: Apple TV software update and new UI
The next-gen Apple TV isn't alone in getting the new button-centric UI; older Apple TV models (iOS-based, not the really old OS X Apple TVs) got the new look as part of an update today, bringing the devices to system software version 5.0. It would be nice if the iOS versions on iPhone and on Apple TV matched up, but what can you do? As usual, the Apple TV update process is smooth and simple -- if your Apple TV hasn't notified you of the update yet, just go to the Settings menu, to General, and choose Update Software. Apple ups over-the-air download limit to 50MB for iOS
This tid-bit didn't warrant a lot of attention during Apple's presentation today, but it's definitely worth noting: the limit on downloads from the App Store is now 50MB over-the-air, instead of a paltry 20MB. Now, anything larger than that and you'll still need to hop on a WiFi network, but you probably don't want to chew through your data plan that quick any way. iTunes cloud lacks Fox, Universal movies; 3G app cap at 50MB
A studio veteran divulged Wednesday that the iTunes in the Cloud access coming hand-in-hand with the new Apple TV and iTunes 10.6 doesn't include Fox and Universal. Either was tangled in HBO deals that gave the premium cable network brief exclusives that conflicted with the re-download rights, AllThingsD heard. iPhoto für iOS komplettiert die mobile iLife-Suite

iTunes 10.6 brings 1080p video, iTunes Match upgrades

According to our sister site Engadget, one of the few new features of the new Apple TV is better Netflix integration. There is now higher resolution streaming available, 1080p like other platforms are receiving now. AppleCare+ reaches iPad; Apple TV gets direct Netflix signup
In tandem with announcing a third-generation iPad, Apple has also brought its AppleCare+ warranty option to the tablet. By default an iPad is only given a limited one-year warranty, with 90 days of free support. iOS 5.1 goes live with new camera, pseudo-4G bar on AT&T
As promised, Apple has posted iOS 5.1. The update adds both the promised Japanese support for Siri and the new iPad's voice dictation as well as features that had previously been leaked, such as the new lock screen that provides an always-available shortcut to the camera. Users now just have to swipe upwards from the home screen to launch the camera instead of double-tapping the home button and pressing once more.

We're taking a trip into the fantastical world of patents, so the usual disclaimer applies. There's no guarantee we'll ever see this in a product, or that a patent will even be granted. Got that? Hier ist: das iPad HD! Heisst aber das "neue iPad", also wird die Nummerierung nicht länger durchgezogen und Apple hat sich dafür entschieden, es nur mit dem Adjektiv "neu" auszustatten. Viel ist gleich geblieben (sogar der Home Button), aber mit einigen guten Neuerungen, die Besitzer des iPad 1 von einem Upgrade überzeugen dürften. Das Display zum Beispiel: die Auflösung von 2048 x 1536 Pixeln wird HD-Enthusiasten Spass machen und unsere US-Kollegen waren im ersten Hands-On ziemlich geflasht, ungefähr so wie beim Vergleich zwischen iPhone 3G und dem iPhone 4S. Apple reaches 315m iOS devices, trashes Android tablet apps
Apple during its new iPad event touted its iOS device count and was also heavily critical of Android tablet apps. Apple had sold a total of 315 million iPads, iPhones, and iPod touch players in its history. Vor wenigen Minuten war es endlich so weit, Tim Cook betrat die Bühne in San Fransciscos Yerba Buena Center for the Arts und stellte neben einem neuem Apple TV auch das neue iPad vor. Was es sonst noch an Neuigkeiten gab, erfahrt ihr in unserer Zusammenfassung des Events.

See that? That's the first shot we've been able to secure using the new iPad and its "iPhone 4S-esque" sensor. Apple has now posted a streaming video of its latest special media event, at which it announced the third-generation Apple TV and third-generation iPad. News: Apple boosts 3G download limit to 50MB
As predicted by a third-party developer, Apple has raised its download limit for media acquired over a 3G connection to 50MB. The prior ceiling was 20Mb, leaving little headroom for developers looking to take full advantage of the third-generation iPad’s increased resolution. Twitter brings support for right-to-left languages: volunteers by done localization
Twitter's now available in Arabic, Farsi, Hebrew and Urdu, with the task of translating the likes of the retweet button, list classifications and the fail whale largely done by a task force of volunteers. The languages were added to Twitter's translation to-do list back in January, with around 13,000 helpers getting the job done since then. FCC wastes no time, approves new iPad and Apple TV
In tried and true fashion, the FCC has given the official stamp of approval to Apple's new products almost immediately after they were announced. iPhoto kommt jetzt auf iPhoto, iPod touch und iPad: Die vom Mac bekannte Bildbearbeitungssoftware gibt es seit heute in einer iOS-Version. Natürlich hat Entwickler Apple die Steuerung hierfür überarbeitet.Das neue iPhoto auf die Touchscreens zugeschnitten: Viele Funktionen werden über Gesten gesteuert. Ein Fingerwisch nach oben verändert zum Beispiel den Kontrast.
Was für die Bedienung gilt, gilt allerdings nicht für die Leistung: Hier zeigt die App (in Verbindung mit der richtigen Hardware) Power. Bis zu 19 Megapixel große Fotos soll iPhoto auf den iOS-Geräten bewältigen können. Das reicht selbst für Bilder von Spiegelreflex-Kameras.

Zwar hat Apple keinen Livestream zur Vorstellung des iPads angeboten. Aber wer sich das Event jetzt im Nachhinein ansehen möchte, kann das tun.

iPad 3 kaufen: Ab 16. März in Deutschland möglich
Soeben hat Apple das neue iPad 3, das aktuell nur unter dem Titel “neues iPad” läuft, vorgestellt. Es wird ab 16. März in Deutschland verfügbar sein und kann ab sofort vorbestellt werden.
Deutschland kann sich diesmal zu den glücklichen Ländern zählen, die als erstes das neue Apple-Tablet bekommen. Neben den USA, Großbritannien, Japan und ein paar anderen Staaten startet der Verkauf in Deutschland am 16. März. Gleiches gilt für die Schweiz nur zu den Österreichern hat Apple noch keine Angabe gemacht. Sie mussten sich schon bei dem iPhone 4S zwei Wochen länger gedulden.

Netflix on new Apple TV supports 1080p, all boxes get integrated signup and pay via iTunes
Even though Apple didn't make any huge changes on its new Apple TV box, it does come with a slight spec bump for Netflix. On the third generation Apple TV, Netflix will take advantage of its higher resolution output with 1080p streams, just like other platforms including the PS3 and WDTV Live. don't have the new box? Apple TV upgraded to 1080p, due March 16 for $99
As expected, Apple on Wednesday officially announced a new Apple TV, capable of 1080p video playback. The user interface has been improved as well, and people will have the ability to stream movies they've already purchased on iTunes via iCloud. Previously, only TV shows could be streamed. Apple unveils new iPad at San Francisco press event
Apple today announced the third-generation iPad at an event in San Francisco. The device's main feature is a 2048x1536 Retina Display, twice the resolution of the iPad 2, rated at 264 pixels per inch; existing apps will be upscaled automatically. Color saturation is said to be 44 percent higher. The tablet also makes the switch to a new quad-core processor, the A5X, which Apple says is built with the Retina Display in mind. After months of anticipation, Apple has announced the third generation of the iPad. Prices are (all USD) $499/$599/$699 for Wi-Fi-only models in 16 GB, 32 GB and 64 GB. So, what'd you have in the office pool? iPad 3, iPad 2S, iPad HD? Doesn't matter, really. All that matters is that it's here! The next generation of Apple's iOS slate and, as usual, she's a beaut. As was rumored this thing is packing a Retina display, potentially making this the most pixel-packed slate on the market. The 9.7-inch screen plays host to 3.1 million pixels in a 2048 x 1536 arrangement -- that's 264ppi. It's not just a higher resolution though, the screen also boasts improved color saturation. Of course, what would a new iPad be without some updated guts. The new model has an A5X processor and quad-core graphics chip. After weeks of seeing the Apple TV slowly disappear from retail shelves, Apple announced the third generation of its "hobby" device today during the live press event. The new Apple TV is externally identical to its predecessor, but the big new feature is its support for full 1080p video playback. The device has a redesigned user interface with special emphasis on Photo Stream and Movie content, all of which are available in full HD and use Apple's cloud services to get them on the device. iOS 5.1 available today, brings Japanese-language Siri
We're live from Apple's event in San Francisco where Tim Cook has just announced additional language capabilities for Siri. That disembodied helper ushered in by the iPhone 4S is now getting a localized Japanese equivalent as part of the iOS 5.1 update rolling out today and slated to hit Japan over the next few weeks. Looks like those prior leaks were right on the money. Now we'll just have to wait and see if that camera slider makes the cut.

Apple reveals new full HD Apple TV: $99, starting next week
It looks like we were blind-sided a little by that decidedly iPad-esque invite, because Apple has something more for us -- it's just announced the latest iteration of Apple TV and it can do 1080p video. Liquidmetal currently shipping parts to 'several' customers
Liquidmetal is in the process of shipping commercial parts to "several of its customers world-wide," according to a press release. The customers are unidentified, but Liquidmetal says that it in fact began delivering parts in December, and has more shipments scheduled into the future. Production capabilities should ramp up over coming months.

Proview's creditors claim iPad trademark ownership
Proview faced an unusually ironic conflict Wednesday after the eight banks handling its bankruptcy argued that they, not Proview, had ownership rights in the iPad trademark dispute. The collective in a statement argued that whatever dispute existed was "essentially between Apple and the eight banks," which involved firms like China Development Bank and China Minsheng Bank. In taking Proview's assets, they understood that they also owned the trademarks.

InstaPrint project would print Instagram photos
A Brooklyn-based company, Breakfast, is looking to raise funds through Kickstarter to get its InstaPrint project into production. Basically a mobile printer running on Linux, it uses Zink's inkless technology to print Instagram photos from Wi-Fi-connected iPhones and iPods. The photos include comments and are searched for by user-specified hashtags.

Intel Ivy Bridge benched early, shows huge leap in graphics
An unofficial, pre-release benchmarking of Intel's upcoming Ivy Bridge architecture has shown an overall speed up, but most of all in graphics. Testing at AnandTech of a 3.5GHz, quad Core i7-3770K desktop chip has shown that the Intel HD 4000 integrated video is about 20 to 40 percent faster than the 3000 video on a roughly comparable earlier Core i7 using the current Sandy Bridge architecture. While still trailing behind AMD's Fusion in an A8 chip, it's enough to make games playable that wouldn't have been practical otherwise, such as running Skyrim smoothly at 1680x

Google reportedly considering sell-off of Motorola's set-top box business
This one is still far from a sure thing and would represent something of an about-face from earlier statements made by CEO Larry Page, but The New York Post is reporting today that Google may be looking to sell-off Motorola Mobility's set-top box division as its $12.5 billion acquisition of the company nears a close. Apple Online Store offline: Ankündigung neuer Produkte – iPad 3, Apple TV 3G?
We'll be back soon“ - Der Apple Store ist weltweit derzeit nicht zu erreichen. Es dürfte klar sein, was dahinter steckt: neue Produkte sind im Anmarsch. Das verdeutlicht auch die kurze Notiz: „We are busy updating the store for you and will be back shortly“.
Es steht außer Frage, dass Apple heute Abend (ab 19 Uhr deutscher Zeit) in San Francisco wieder neue Gerätschaften der Welt vorstellen wird, um diese dann unmittelbar nach der Keynote im Store zum Verkauf bzw. Peter Molyneux will leave Microsoft Game / Lionhead Studios once he's finished developing Fable: The Journey for Kinect. SunPower wins contract to build solar panels for Apple
A San Jose company, SunPower, has won the contract to build solar panels for the company's North Carolina datacenter, a filing with the state's Utilities Commission reveals. "Each of the photovoltaic installations will consist of multiple SunPower E20 435-watt photovoltaic modules on ground-mounted single axis tracking systems," the document reads. The solar farm is being built in phases, and could be ready to supply power in October.

GreenLight Music aims to be licensing giant for songs
Better known for its photo service, Corbis has branched out into audio through GreenLight Music. The new site lets companies and individuals pay for rights to songs for commercial purposes, ranging from public presentations and videos to apps. Google pays $47,500 for flaws found in Chrome
Just in time for the CanSecWest security conference, Google has announced it has handed out $47,500 in rewards to users who identified bugs in its Chrome browser. There were 14 bugs fixed, with three users getting $10,000 each for their contributions. The vulnerabilities were addressed in a March 4 update to the browser, though the release was suspended due to a small issue.

Ivy Bridge benchmarks: CPU boosted 5-15 percent, onboard GPU handles Skyrim
We've heard whispers of Ivy Bridge's benchmarking prowess, but now we have more comprehensive and independent test results of a Core i7 3770K CPU, courtesy of AnandTech. The conclusion? The upgrade is "quite good," which is Anand Lal Shimpi's way of describing a 5-15 percent boost in CPU performance for the same money as Sandy Bridge, not to mention lower power consumption and the ability to run the latest games on the HD 4000 integrated graphics. iWallet: Apple erhält Patent für NFC-basiertes Bezahlen
In der Vergangenheit gab es immer wieder Meldungen über Apples Interesse an bargeldlosem Bezahlen. Dazu gehörten auch Berichte eines iPhone mit integriertem NFC-Chip. Nun wurde Apple ein entsprechendes Patent zugesprochen.
Near Field Communication (NFC) erlaubt den Datenaustausch zwischen zwei Geräten über Distanzen von wenigen Zentimetern. Entsprechende Chips gibt es schon in einigen Android-Geräten. In den USA benutzt etwa Google Wallet diese Technik.

Report: Sprint planning to dump Lightsquared as early as next week
According to Bloomberg, Sprint is considering pulling the plug on its partnership with Lightsquared as early as next week. WSJ: Next iPad will have LTE, land on Verizon Wireless
The Wall Street Journal chimed in with a last minute report on the iPad that'll make Verizon Wireless customers happy. Spencer E. Ante of the Journal writes, "The new iPad will support a wireless broadband technology called LTE, people familiar with the matter have said," and Credit Suisse analyst Jonathan Chaplin further adds, "It is great news for Verizon. They have a great LTE network that is empty, so they can afford to fill it up." Chaplin may end up eating those words as more and more customers join Verizon's relatively new LTE network, but, until then, most people will be pleased to see Apple adopting the next generation mobile broadband technology.

New iPad rumored using Senseg haptic feedback technology
The new iPad being announced later today could have haptic feedback, Pocket-lint sources claim. Apple has allegedly been in talks with a Finnish company, Senseg, the creators of a technology called E-Sense. Unlike normal haptic feedback methods, the one Apple is reportedly using would put an electrical pulse behind every pixel, adding "texture" to onscreen objects.

Intel demos touchscreen ultrabook concept
Intel has been giving hands-on demonstrations at CeBIT of a concept ultrabook with a touch display. At 13.3 inches, it would have one of the largest capacitive touch displays yet. Wenige Stunden vor der iPad-Keynote heizen letzte Gerüchte der bereits brodelnden Gerüchteküche noch einmal richtig ein. Einem Bericht der britischen Zeitung The Guardian zufolge wird das iPad 3 bzw. dessen Touchscreen-Modul mit “E-Sense” ausgestattet sein.

Google wants united mobile, social gaming by 2013
Google+ group product manager Punit Soni gave a presentation at the Game Developers Conference on Tuesday that promised a completely unified game platform from his company. He expected "by next year" to see Android, Chrome Web Store, Chrome Native Client, and Google+ games to all be unified. China minister chastises Foxconn, hints toughened monitoring
China labor minister Yin Weimin in statements to the media hinted the government might crack down on labor abuse issues at companies like Foxconn. He noted with Reuters in earshot that some unnamed foreign companies, while usually law-abiding, were guilty of mandating too much overtime, underpaying, and a "lack of concern for people." Samsung files new lawsuit against Apple in S. Korea
On the day of Apple's expected iPad announcement, Samsung has confirmed it filed another lawsuit against Apple claiming the iPad 2 and the iPhone 4S infringe on three of its patents. This latest round of litigation was filed in Korea, Samsung's home country. According to the Reuters report, the suit covers three patents involving the user interface, short text messages and how a device displays data. Every year Google offers a bounty to those that can dig up security flaws in its browser. This year, the company is putting $1 million on the line at CanSecWest. Apple schlägt Einigung im Patentkrieg vor und verlangt Beteiligung an Android-Verkäufen
In der IT-Branche herrscht seit einiger Zeit Eiseskälte, jedenfalls was Patente angeht. Klagen, Gegenklagen und das ganze verteilt über den gesamten Erdball. Möglicherweise ist nun jedoch eine Einigung in Sicht. Während sich schon Microsoft mit den Herstellern von Android-Geräten einigen konnte, hat Apple nun einen ähnlichen Weg eingeschlagen und verlangt einen Anteil von 5 bis 15 US-Dollar pro verkauftem Gerät.

Sony to set minimum prices, cut model lines in half
Sony at uncharacteristic event Tuesday planned a major rethink of its attitudes towards retailers. In an attempt to reclaim its premium image, it was instituting a minimum advertised price for 140 of its product ranges that would prevent retailers from cutting prices too heavily on Sony products. The company's COO Phil Molyneux added that the company was cutting the number of models it offered across the board, including a drop from 40 TVs to 22 as well as reductions in headphones and elsewhere.

Acer: our $799 ultrabook isn't making a profit
Acer's Christoph Pohlmann in remarks Tuesday at CeBIT revealed that the company was selling ultrabooks at extremely thin margins. Apple patent directly touches on iPhone with NFC payments
A newly granted USPTO patent has lent credence to notions that Apple is looking to implement NFC in iOS. The technique describes a way to define how a payment is made when an iPhone with an NFC chip is brought up to a terminal to pay. It would set rules for the deal, such as payment limits, requiring permission for specific vendors in their online and offline modes, and adding restrictions for buying alcohol or other kinds of goods.

Speed tweak to iPad App Store UI seen ahead of iPad 3 launch
Apple has quietly updated the iPad version of the App Store for iOS with minor tweaks ahead of (and possibly in preparation for) the iPad 3 debut on Wednesday, AppleInsider reports. The changes mostly involve using more unhinted horizontal scrolling, which allows (for example) the Top Paid and Top Free iPad apps to be on screen in a more pleasing manner with more information available per app. Users can swipe each "list" to the left to see additional selections.

Toshiba outs Qosmio X870 gaming laptop with 3D display, not-too-tacky design
What's this, then? Why, it's what appears to be a brand new, redesigned gaming laptop, courtesy of 'ol Toshiba. Though it hasn't been announced here in the US, UK-based site TechDigest is showing us the first photo of the Qosmio X870, which seems to have a rather reined-in design compared to previous Toshiba gaming machines we've seen (to the extent that a PC with red accents can ever be called staid). Netflix talking to cable TV providers for set-top deals
Fresh leaks have hinted that Netflix is talking directly to cable TV providers to make itself an add-on service. Multiple Reuters informants had Netflix negotiating to become an on-demand, paid extra for TV service. One provider would be ready to provide Netflix before the end of 2012 if cleared quickly.

Wi-Fi Alliance plans to shield against WPS security hole
The Wi-Fi Alliance has responded to word of security exploits in Wi-Fi Protected Setup with a statement alluding to a fix. It claimed to The Verge that its test routine and certification now made sure that Wi-Fi devices "effectively resist" brute, PIN code-based attacks. How that would resolve the gap, and whether or not a patch would be available for those devices that had already shipped, wasn't mentioned.

Skype updates to v5.6, improves UI for group video calling
The Skype Group at Microsoft has updated Skype, its VOIP calling, chatting and video-conferencing application for the Mac, to version 5.6.0.143. The new release primarily adds automatic updating to the program, along with an improved user interface for group video calls, the ability to delete conversations, a new full-screen mode for Lion and the ability to disable Audio Gain Control. Square picked Tuesday to give a fuller explanation of its soon to launch New York City taxi cab system. The pilot project will give drivers an iPhone with a custom app, Checker, as well as a special seatback iPad for the sake of passengers.
