AAPL: Analysts forecasting stratospheric stock price
Yesterday Apple (AAPL) hit an all-time intraday price of $422.86 and currently it is trading around $413. However, those prices seam cheap compared to what almost every analyst thinks AAPL will do in the next twelve months. DailyFinance has a roundup of analyst expectations for Apple's (AAPL) stock price and it appears that the sky is the limit.

Survey shows most people treating new tablets as 'toys'
Most people who are buying tablets are doing so because they see it as a new "toy," not practical, a Citigroup survey suggests. In July the firm polled 1,800 people in the US, UK and China, and found that 62 percent of those planning to buy a tablet in the next 12 months want a "new toy/gadget." Other reasons for getting a tablet -- such as gifts, work or replacing an existing computer -- are comparatively minor. The group wanting a tablet as a toy has in fact grown substantially since November, when it was nevertheless still major at 44 percent.

Lawyer 'doesn't know' if Google paid for iPhone search deal
Google's representing attorney Susan Creighton in a follow-up Senate hearing was unclear on the financial incentives Google might have given Apple to become the default search engine on the iPhone. Following earlier testimony by Eric Schmidt, she acknowledged that Google had made a deal with Apple but that she 'didn't know' if it involved paying Apple to choose one over the other. She admitted that it "wouldn't surprise" her if cash had traded hands.

Squid extract bridges human / machine divide, cyborgs to become very real

Google: Oracle wants $2 billion in Android licenses for Java
Oracle wants a minimum of $2 billion in damages for alleged violations of Java's copyrights and patents in Android, Google said in a court filing. The company wanted $1.2 billion for perceived damages in 2012 as well as past and future payments. As Oracle wants payments to go out as far as 2025, however, the tally could be much higher.

Apple gains 40 new patents in China
Retuers is reporting that Apple has been granted 40 patents in China. The patents were awarded on September 9th and cover 37 of its products including the iPad, iPhone, and MacBook Air. Some of the patents also cover the architecture of its three Shanghai stores.

Twitter now allows posting photos by MMS
Twitter has upgraded the direct messaging capabilities for its texting service. Now, in addition to tweets, users whose service providers support MMS can attach and share videos. To send, all a user need do is enter the text of a tweet as normal, attach a photo to the message, and send it to the relevant Twitter code.

Analyst maintains call single, modest new iPhone
Apple is only working on one new iPhone model, and a fairly incremental one, argues Wedge Partners analyst Brian Blair. French papers team up to oppose Apple's Newsstand
Much in the way that Apple has come to dominate the media shopping experience through iTunes, the company is now aiming to make purchasing of newspapers and magazines much easier through iOS 5's Newsstand. Twitter opens up photo sharing via text message on some carriers
We're not exactly lacking in ways to share a photo on Twitter these days, but one key area that has been left behind is the venerable text message -- which is pretty important for the millions of people that don't have smartphones. While tweets via text have been possible since day one, Twitter has only just now opened up the ability to post a photo via SMS. Schmidt: Android openness rules out Microsoft-like antitrust
Google chairman Eric Schmidt in his Senate testimony over possible antitrust abuses denied that Android was anti-competitive. When asked if Android could be modified to artificially hinder third-party apps, he contended that Android's purportedly open nature wouldn't allow it. Taking a dig at Microsoft, he noted that strictly closed-source code was where antitrust issues could happen, since it was only there that a firm could hide unfair limitations.

Froyo-based ViewSonic V430 smartphone appears in Russia, anonymity almost guaranteed
ViewSonic has revealed its latest Android phone, the V430 -- though you'd be hard pressed to tell who made it from looks alone. Putting the incognito design aside, vital statistics include a meaty WVGA 4.3-inch screen, and a 5 megapixel primary camera paired with a VGA front-facing camera, all chugging along on a 1GHz Snapdragon processor. iPad 2 3G on sale in China, still no China Unicom plans
As planned, 3G models of the iPad 2 are now available in mainland China. By extension Apple has revealed prices at its online store; a 16GB tablet is 4,688 RMB, about $735 US, while 32 and 64GB options are 5,488 RMB ($860) and 6,288 RMB ($985), respectively. In the US 3G iPads are substantially cheaper, sitting between $629 and $829, even though the products are built in China.

Al Gore semi-confirms iPhone 5 launching October
Environmental activist and Apple board member Al Gore effectively confirmed plans for new iPhones in October through a speech at the Discovery Invest Leadership Summit. One account of his presentation given to TNW saw him mention multiple iPhones with the implications of both the Phone 5 and a cheaper iPhone 4. He also joked that he was promoting Apple's work and hinted that the timing was internal knowledge, not just a guess.

Daily Mac App: Pandoras Box
I enjoy integrating Pandora into my music rotation along with my iTunes library and Spotify, but doing so on the desktop either means keeping another web browser window up or downloading Pandora's desktop client for OS X. New RED Scarlet to be announced November 3rd
Well, it looks like Canon won't be the only company making a big camera announcement on November 3rd. RED CEO Jim Jannard has also now confirmed that it will also be officially announcing its "new" RED Scarlet camera on the very same day (no coincidence, it seems), at which point it will detail "all the changes" the company has made to it. Unfortunately, that's about all the company is saying right now, although Jannard promises that "when we announce the changes, we will be ready to ship."

LightSquared proposes 'simple, affordable solution' to that pesky GPS interference issue
It's not the first "solution" that LightSquared has proposed for the GPS interference issue that's gotten in the way of its LTE network rollout, but the company's now touting a new "simple, affordable solution" to the problem. That doesn't actually involve any changes to the network itself, but rather changes to the high-precision GPS hardware that is being interfered with. Earlier this year, Crunchy Logistics unveiled an interactive, multi-touch table to rival Microsoft's surface devices. The LED table had 36 touch-points and supported common gestures like swipe and pinch-to-zoom. It's literally the size of a conference table. US DOJ won't give reasons for AT&T/T-Mobile challenge
The US Justice Department will not reveal to US lawmakers why it has chosen to challenge AT&T's purchase of T-Mobile. According to a Tuesday report, the Justice Department sent a letter to the House Energy and Commerce Committee's Chairman, Fred Upton, on Monday that stated it couldn't reveal information regarding live litigation that's not public. The Justice Department filed a lawsuit at the end of August to block the buyout as it would raise prices and hamper both competition and innovation.

iOS devices are HIPAA compliant, Apple says
FaceTime and iOS as a whole should be compliant with HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) security rules, an Apple spokesperson suggests. The standard is important in the US healthcare industry as in order for devices to qualify for government funding, they must ensure that only authorized people will be able to access Electronic Protected Health Information, or EPHI. Apples iOS-Geräte dominieren WiFi-Netz an Flughäfen
Laut einer neuen Erhebung von Boingo Wireless dominieren mittlerweile Apples iOS-Geräte klar die WiFi-Netze an 60 weltweit untersuchten Flughäfen. Noch vor einem Jahr waren dagegen Notebooks in der Überzahl. Nach seiner Vorstellung gewann Apples iPad allerdings schon im Laufe des vergangenen Jahres schnell Marktanteile. Sprint: iPhone 'No. 1' reason subs leave, Apple deal hinted
Sprint CEO Dan Hesse during a speech at Goldman Sachs' Communacopia conference dropped strong hints that Sprint will have the iPhone 5. While at first insisting that he wouldn't talk about whether Sprint would have the iPhone, he framed it as the key to Sprint's future business. The "number one reason customers churn" was because of the iPhone, he said, and it was only in spite of facing two iPhone-carrying rivals that Sprint had added customers over the past two quarters.

HP board may fire CEO after his trying to kill mobile, PCs
HP's board of directors is near holding a meeting that could fire its CEO Leo Apotheker less than a year into his stint, a pair of sources said Wednesday. The group is said by Bloomberg to be unhappy both with nine months of consecutive forecast drops and plans to drop mobile hardware and PCs. Under one proposal, former eBay CEO Meg Whitman would take over, at least temporarily.

‘Der Fotoguide’ liefert Tipps für den besseren Schnappschuss
Im vergangenen Herbst bin ich von einer Spiegelreflex-Kamera auf eine 'Point-and-Shoot' umgestiegen. Weil sie handlicher ist und ich sie dadurch häufiger mitnehme. Für mein Hobby-Interesse hat sich der Umstieg bewährt, obwohl das iPhone noch immer eine wesentlich höhere 'Knipsrate' verzeichnet. RIM stolpert auch in Q2/2011
Offizielle Zahlen von Research in Motion: Im zweiten Quartal 2011 wurden 10.6 Millionen BlackBerry Smartphones und 200.000 PlayBook Tablets ausgeliefert. Nicht verkauft, sondern ausgeliefert. Erwartet wurden 12 Millionen BlackBerrys und bis zu 700.000 PlayBooks.

Erfolgreich bei ‘iTunes Match’ angemeldet
Seit vergangenem Sonntag bin ich 'iTunes Match'-Nutzer. In der zweiten Welle, die Apple für Entwickler-Konten anschob, konnte ich mich mit einer US-Kreditkarte (und einem US-Account) registrieren. Entgegen meiner Behauptung von vor zwei Wochen dient diese jedoch lediglich als Regionalcode-Sperre. Abgerechnet wird, falls ausreichend Guthaben auf dem amerikanischen iTunes-Konto vorhanden ist, von den hinterlegten Geldreserven.

Das ist doch sehr naheliegend: ein 3D-Drucker für Kids. Das Konzept von Joris Peels und Artur Tchoukanov, die beide früher bei i.materialise gearbeitet haben, soll tatsächlich auch Realität werden, wofür sie jetzt ihre eigene Firma Origo gegründet haben. Der 3D-Drucker soll den Kids ermöglichen, alles was sie gerade im Kopf und auf ein Tablet gezeichnet haben, auszudrucken, wobei das verwendete Material recyclefähig sein soll. Why AAPL can't just hop into the DJIA
Apple's stock recently crossed the $400 threshold, leading to speculation that the company could join the elite group of companies on the Dow Jones Industrial Average.
This speculation might be premature as there are financial hurdles preventing Apple from easily hopping on the DJIA. First, the DJIA is price-weighted, so any change in Apple's $400 stock would have a huge impact on the index. So much influence that Bespoke Investment Group said the DJIA would need to be renamed to the Dow Jones Industrial Apple.
Even a small US$1.82 change would cause the Dow Jones average to jump by 14 points. Imagine the boost the DJIA would get from Apple's stock price, which has climb $90.89 in the past.

AT&T ships Galaxy S II October 2, days before iPhone 5
AT&T on Wedndesday morning set out launch details for its Galaxy S II variant that could see it overshadowed by Apple. Pandora HTML5 web app goes live
Pandora Wednesday publicly launched a totally revamped website. The New Pandora site uses HTML5 rather than Flash and is said to be more responsive, easier to use, and comes with improved social integration. The team also previewed the site over the last two months to listeners for feedback and bug fixes. Perhaps most importantly for some, Pandora removed the 40-hour listening cap for free users, and it's now unlimited.

Apple devices dominate airport Wi-Fi
Anyone who has spent time around an airport recently has probably noticed that Apple devices -- particularly the iPhone and iPad -- seem to be everywhere. Ina Fried at the Wall Street Journal reports that Wi-Fi hotspot provider Boingo has the stats to prove that Apple devices are now dominating mobile device Wi-Fi connections at airports.
The figures from June, 2011 show that the iPhone makes up 42.1 percent of the mobile device connections to Boingo's airport hotspots, while the iPad is second at 23.5 percent. Don't count out the iPod touch -- it's the third most popular device at 17.5 percent. For mobile devices, that means that Apple products make up a whopping 83.1 percent of all of the conn

Stitcher pulls in $10 million in new funding
Streaming service Stitcher has managed to pull in $10 million in new venture capital funding. The investment is being led by New Enterprise Associates, with earlier backers Benchmark Capital, New Atlantic Ventures, and Ron Conway also contributing. Kindle library lending official at 11,000 local libraries
The Kindle library book lending has now gone live, with Amazon now making the official announcment. Those with Kindle readers or Kindle apps can borrow e-books from more than 11,000 local libraries throughout the US. The system fully supports the Whispersync feature that will synchronize margin notes, highlights and bookmarks on its own, as well as assign real page number and integrate with Facebook and Twitter, among others.

Canon has announced that it has added AirPrint support to three PIXMA printers. French publishers unite on iPad outlet, push Apple on change
French publishers took a shot at challenging Apple's control over publishing terms on the iPad Wednesday with the launch of a new portal. WSJ: Samsung macht Bada nächstes Jahr zu Open Source
Samsung will laut Informationen des Wall Street Journal sein mobiles OS Bada ab nächstem Jahr zu Open Source machen. FaceTime calls are encrypted, HIPAA compliant
This isn't the issue from last fall, but Apple addressed questions regarding FaceTime security from ZDNet. An Apple representative assured the site that the FaceTime conversation stream is encrypted from end to end, specifically with WPA2 Enterprise encryption. Each FaceTime session has unique session keys for each conversation.
What this does is make FaceTime HIPAA complaint as long as the wireless network being used utilizes WPA2 Enterprise security with 128-bit AES

Teach For America is a program that recruits teachers fresh from the best colleges and universities and places them in low-income schools. To help them in the important job of instructing the next generation, teachers this year were offered a free iPad 1.

BlackBerry PlayBook orders crash, make Quanta lay off staff
RIM's steep drop-off in BlackBerry PlayBook shipments from the summer is carrying over into the fall, tipsters outlined on Wednesday. A "large decrease" in orders has reportedly seen contract manufacturer Quanta drop production to just 100,000 of the tablets each month, Digitimes said. Noch ist es nicht offiziell, aber die allgemein gut informierten Leute von All Things Digital berichten davon, dass Apple für den vierten Oktober einen Media Event plant, an dem der neue CEO Tim Cook das iPhone 5 vorstellen soll. Ihren Quellen zufolge soll Cook der Haupt-Präsentator sein, in den Nebenrollen gibt es dann Phil Schiller, Scott Forstall und Eddy Cue zu sehen. Das iPhone 5 soll "ein paar Wochen nach" dem Event verfügbar sein, wann genau, bleibt aber noch unklar. Wir sind gespannt auf Tim Cooks ersten großen Auftritt in den Fusstapfen von Steve Jobs.

Dark stains aside, it looks like the S3's WiFi and Bluetooth credentials are all in order so we'll hopefully see its skinny 17mm (0.67-inch) form stateside before too long. Nikon on Wednesday marked the rare start to a new camera format in launching the 1 System. Starting off with the J1 and V1, the two use a new CX-format, 2.7X crop factor 10.1-megapixel CMOS sensor and mirrorless interchangeable lens system that's below Micro Four Thirds but still larger and richer than in compact cameras. Adobe to deliver 3D-capable Flash Player 11, Air 3
Adobe is set to deliver the first version of its ubiquitous Flash Player that will be 3D-capable. Flash Player 11 and the developer platform Air 3 are due to arrive in October and are said to offer significant enhancements over previous versions of the products. The sense of something coming soon grows stronger, as AllThingsD cites "sources close to the situation" saying that Apple's next media event will be held October 4. The hypothetical event, for which no invitations have yet been issued, would presumably be the venue where the next generation of the iPhone is announced to the world. A survey commissioned by a security app developer that polled parents in the U.K. has revealed surprising attitudes about children and access to technology and the internet. The study focused on primary-school children (ages 5-10) and found that one in 10 kids under the age of 10 years old already owns their own iPhone. FiOS on Demand (free, App Store) gives access to any content that its IPTV subscribers can see on demand, including movies and TV shows. Subscribers can't buy videos directly due to Apple's rules but can access any videos they bought, rented, or otherwise have access to.

Verizon continues nationwide LTE expansion tour, edges closer to year-end goal
It appears that Verizon's showing no signs of slowing its LTE expansion efforts, as 26 markets lit up last week and at least another 21 are ready to debut on October 20th. The most recent switching of the flip, which took place on September 15th, rose the grand total of cities blanketed by LTE to 143, covering more than 160 million people; the upcoming effort to expand will increase it to 164 cities. The carrier's goal by the end of the year is 175, which means it'll be just 11 cities away from achie

Serious XSS vulnerability found in Skype for iOS
A security researcher going by "Phil P" and running the Superevr security blog has found a serious scripting vulnerability in the chat messaging feature of Skype versions 3.01 and earlier for the iPhone and iPod Touch that could execute malicious Javascript code without the user being fully aware, giving the attacker access to file contents of any file that the Skype app would have access to -- such as a user's address book.

Since you can't upgrade the GPU or add more RAM to your smartphone, there's really only one way to improve upon an already impressive handset like the Epic 4G Touch -- root it. TRVL: Getting the e-magazine right
I've tried just about every iPad magazine app that has made it to market. For many of the e-mags, the subscription cost is more than the value of the content. Some magazines are using the traditional advertising model to create a revenue stream, and fill their pages with annoying static ads (although some have created equally obnoxious interactive ads as a nod to the digital age). As a result, most iPad magazines stay on my device just long enough for the review and are then deleted. TRVL (free) is an exception to my bad habit of loading and tossing e-magazines.

Autodesk sees vast increase in customers via iPhone apps
As Businessweek notes, it took Autodesk, the 3D and CAD software company best known for its industry-standard software AutoCAD -- nearly 30 years to build up a customer base of 12 million customers. But a single iPhone app -- the $2 Sketchbook Mobile, released almost exactly two years ago -- has increased the company's user base by almost 60 percent, bringing in seven million new users. The company also saw a 14 percent rise in revenue.

Patent trolls may have cost US companies $500 billion
Three Boston University researchers have put a price tag on the cost of patent trolling in the US. The amount is a staggering $500 billion since 1990. In the past four years, the cost has averaged about $83 billion annually, amounting to more than 25 percent of US R&D spent over the time period.

Adata stellt zweite SF-2281-SSD vor
Bereits vor Monaten hat Adata ein Solid State Drive auf Basis des SF-2281-Controllers von SandForce vorgestellt. Die S511 ist mit synchronem ONFI-NAND ausgestattet, das in 25 Nanometer Strukturbreite gefertigt wird. Ergänzend hat Adata nun mit der S511 noch ein etwas günstigeres Modell vorgestellt.
