Update für iTunes 11.0.4 veröffentlicht
Apple hat am Abend iTunes 11.0.4 veröffentlicht. Das Update für den Media-Player können Nutzer wie üblich über den Mac App Store herunterladen. Als mögliche Verbesserungen, so heißt es, will Apple die Wi-Fi-Synchronisation von Inhalten über die Plattformen hinweg verbessert haben, d. h. der iPhone-, iPod- oder iPad-Sync sollte nun reibungsloser ablaufen. Ebenfalls kein Problem mehr sollte für “einige” Nutzer die gehäufte Eingabe ihres iTunes-Passworts nach dem Kauf darstellen. Pricing Leak Suggests MacBook Air Release at WWDC, Retina MacBook Pro Update Shipping Later?

Developer says Apple artificially limiting iPhone, iPad speeds
Apple and the iPhone's major US carriers are imposing artificial caps on the cellular speeds of the iPhone and iPad, claims Joseph Brown, a developer of hacked carrier updates. Brown notes that by scrapping a line of Apple code in his AT&T update, iPhone 5 and fourth-generation iPad speeds saw "significant and noticeable results." AT&T iPhones are reportedly limited to 14.4Mbps HSDPA, despite the iPhone 5 being capable of 42.2Mbps DC-HSDPA+, and AT&T's 3G network supporting speeds up to 21.1Mbps. AMD says it's open to developing chips for Android and Chrome OS after all
It was only last fall that AMD said it didn't see a need to make its new "Hondo" chip for tablets to work with Android in addition to Windows and Linux, but it seems that the company now sees things a bit differently. Speaking with PC World at Computex, AMD Senior VP Lisa Su said that while AMD is "very committed to Windows 8," the company also sees "a market for Android and Chrome developing as well." Developer Claims Three Major Carriers Throttle iPhone and iPad Data Speeds
According to Joseph Brown, one of the developers behind the iTweakiOS site that provides hacked carrier updates for iOS users, Apple is purposely throttling iPhone data speeds to "even out" the network as Apple's phones consume more data than other smartphones. Brown states that AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint limit the iPhone's data speeds and provides evidence in the form of snapshots of network settings. For example, AT&T limits the iPhone 5 to Category 10 (14.4Mbps) HSDPA despite the fact that the network is able to support up to Category 14 (21.1Mbps) HSDPA+ and the iPhone supports Category 24 (42.2Mbps) DC-HSDPA+. Apple, THX work to resolve patent lawsuit
This past March audio pioneers THX sued Apple in California's federal court for patent infringement. The case involves narrow-profile speaker designs that can enhance sound output. THX is claiming the infringement of their 2008 patent is only found in the iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, and some models of the iPad and iMac computer.
Now both sides in the dispute are attempting to settle the case out of court. Bloomberg is reporting that lawyers from Apple and THX have filed a request with San Francisco's federal court to reschedule a June 14 case-management conference until July 26. Fairphone hits its production goal, promises to deliver more ethical smartphone by October

The Stilly-est camera app ever
no, no, No, No, NO!
It all started innocently enough this morning when Dave Caolo pointed out a Tumblr page devoted to GIFs from an app named Stilly (US$1.99). Now, thanks to Dave's keen eye for the absurd, I have wasted untold minutes looking through a long page of GIFs and started making my own with Stilly.
The app is simple, making an animated GIF of whatever motion happens to flash in front of your iPhone camera when you push the large red and yellow shutter button. You really have only one setting -- you can choose to change colors between your images, resulting in an even more jarring GIF than usual.

Apple Planning 'Something Really Different' for New Mac Pro
The new Mac Pro model, expected later this year, is "something really different" according to a video professional who says he spoke with the Mac Pro product manager. Writing on the RedUser.net forum, Andrew Baird says he spoke to Mac Pro project manager Douglas Brooks on the phone after emailing CEO Tim Cook with his concerns about the lack of a new professional tower from Apple over the past few years. Baird told MacRumors that the call didn't include any specific details about when the new machine would be released, nor its specifications -- however, he was assured several times that the new Mac Pro would be worth the wait. Apple has released a software update to its professional photo editing and management software, Aperture. The 3.4.5 update addresses the following issues, according to its release notes:

New iRadio Ad Details Surface Ahead of Expected Launch Next Week

Apple to sell audio ads on iRadio, source says
Apple is planning to sell both audio and banner ads for its upcoming streaming music service, often nicknamed iRadio, claims Ad Age. The information is said to come from a former Apple executive familiar with the situation. Apple has released a minor update of iTunes, v11.0.4. The patch copes with two glitches in the software, including one that would cause iTunes to crash when switching between USB and Wi-Fi sync. The other forced people to repeatedly enter their Apple ID at the iTunes Store, even after having logged in just recently.

iTunes 11.0.4 arrives with some minor bug fixes
Apple has released a minor update for iTunes that fixes a few bugs in the program. According to the release notes for version 11.0.4, the update addresses a bug that would cause iTunes to quit when users switched between wired and wireless syncing. It also fixed an issue that caused some users to have to log into the iTunes store repeatedly during use.
iTunes' last update came this past May and introduced a new MiniPlayer that showcases album art along with an improved song view. These features are still listed as new features on the release notes for version 11.0.4 so it appears Apple would still like to remind you of them. You can find the update over at Apple's site or just by opening software update.

Virginia UPS sorter charged with stealing over 60 Apple devices
A 31-year-old Virginia man, Stephen A. Owens, has been charged with embezzling over 60 Apple products as a sorter at a Springfield UPS facility. Police tell local CBS station WUSA9 that Owens is accused of stealing unopened Apple products -- sometimes by hiding them in his pants -- and then selling them at a discount. A new hack dubbed PlexConnect allows the third-party Plex media server to run on second- and third-generation Apple TVs without jailbreaking, the creators of Plex say. The technique involves running a program on a computer which disguises itself as the Trailer app; changing a setting on the Apple TV is then all that's needed to put everything into motion. DevJuice: 10.8.4 and the iOS Simulator
TUAW reader Peter Johnson of Soluble Apps writes, "I, and a few other developers on my Facebook group, have noticed that, since yesterday's OSX update, every other run on the simulator is crashing on start. It appears to work fine when compiling and running on hardware.
I thought it could be useful for your to warn other developers to hold off from performing the update if they want to work on the simulator."
I've experienced the same issue but found that switching from LLDB to GDB (on the advice of Tony Arnold from Apple's Dev Forums) seems to fix the problem for the moment.
Update your scheme by selecting Product > Scheme > Edit Scheme, and choose the GDB debugger for your debug scheme.

Briefly: British Airways Passbook integration, Perfect Photo Suite 7.5
British Airways has launched an updated version of its iOS app that features new Passbook integration. With the latest release all boarding passes will now be sent directly to Passbook, however, support for downloading them within the app will also remain available. The company has also announced that by mid June the Passbook integration will be enhanced through the addition of direct links to boarding passes from the lock screen. Along with these changes the update also resolves a number of bugs and improves overall stability.

FreedomPop expands service to include free voice -- but not for iOS yet
Bargain hunters in the iOS world probably already know about FreedomPop. It's the company that provides 500 MB of free data every month to customers using mobile hotspots, USB dongles, or a sleeve that fits the iPod touch. Now the company is going a bit farther by adding 200 free voice minutes and unlimited texting to the mix, although there won't be a way for iOS users to take advantage of Freedom Pop's generosity -- yet.

NHK stellt Kamera-Bot für den Matrix-Effekt vor, will ihn für Sportübertragungen nutzen (Video)

Egal ob man ihn nun Bullet-Time oder Matrix-Effekt nennt, es geht immer um dasselbe: das Einfrieren von Bewegungen bei gleichzeitigen Fahrten um das Objekt herum. Der japanische Fernsehsender NHK hat jetzt ein eigenes System dafür entwickelt, bei dem eine Hauptkamera acht weitere Subkameras steuert. Noch ist das System nicht ganz livetauglich, weil es etwa eine Minute zur Berechnung braucht, soll aber bei Sportübertragungen für detailgetreues Nachvollziehen von Schlüsselszenen genutzt werden. Könnte sich durchaus auch bei uns durchsetzen, seht selbst im Video nach dem Break.

Russian newspaper Izvestia reports [Google translation, via AppleInsider] that Apple has filed for a trademark on the term "iWatch" in Russia, supporting rumors that the company is planning to launch a smart watch as soon as later this year. British Airways unterstützt Passbook am iPhone
Eine App mit Bordkarten für iPhone gab es von British Airways bereits. Doch jetzt ist ein Update erfolgt, das die Bordkarten der Kunden direkt über Passbook verwalten lässt. Bislang allerdings gibt es nur einen Link innerhalb der British-Airways-App, mit dem Nutzer die Bordkarten zu Passbook hinzufügen können. Damit die digitalen Tickets dann auch Features nutzen können, wie die Anzeige direkt über den Lockscreen des Smartphones, soll bis spätestens Mitte Juni ein weiteres Update folgen. USA: Importverbot für iPhone 4 und alte iPads
Nachdem Samsung im letzten Jahr einen grossen Patentprozess gegen Apple verloren hat, ist dem Unternehmen nun ein erster Sieg in einem anderen wichtigen Rechtsstreit gelungen. Samsung konnte die US-Behörde ITC davon überzeugen, dass Apple bei einigen Geräten ein Samsung-Patent für den Mobilfunkstandard CDMA verletzt haben soll.
Als Konsequenz dieser Patentverletzung könnte bald der Import von Geräten, welche das entsprechende Patent von Samsung beeinträchtigen, verboten werden. Zu den betroffenen Geräten gehören Produkte, welche über den US-Provider AT&T verkauft worden sind. Direkt betroffen sind das iPhone 4, das iPhone 3GS, das iPhone 3G sowie die 3G-Version des iPads der zweiten und dritten Generation.

If you thought that you were immune from being duped into downloading a fake app on the Apple iTunes App Store, think again. Moscone Center wird für die WWDC vorbereitet
Am Montag startet in San Francisco Apples diesjährige Entwicklerkonferenz «WWDC». Die Konferenz findet wie bereits in den vergangenen Jahren im Moscone Center statt — dieses wird nun seit gestern für die Konferenz vorbereitet. Wie immer werden dazu von Apple diverse Banner in den Moscone-Eingangshallen angebracht. Die aufgehängten Banner zeigen nicht selten bereits erste Details auf die Neuigkeiten, die während der Eröffnungskeynote preisgegeben werden.
Die bis jetzt aufgehängten Banner zeigen noch nichts Neues, sie sind im gleichen Stil gehalten, wie das diesjährige WWDC-Logo. Der grosse Banner oberhalb der Registrierungsstelle in der Eingangshalle des Moscone West trägt neben dem WWDC-Schriftzug ein Slogan «Where a whole new world is developing».

HTC One mini? HTC M4? Egal wie man die "kleine" Variante des HTC One nun nennt, jetzt sind auf dem estnischen Blog Delfi.ee Fotos aufgetaucht (mehr davon nach dem Quelle-Link), die die bisherigen Vermutungen zu bestätigen scheinen. Demnach kommt das M4 mit etwas kleinerem 720p- Display, einem Dualcore-Prozessor, 2 GB RAM, 16 GB Speicher und einer 4-Megapixel Kamera mit UltraPixel-Technologie. Außerdem soll es im August für um die 400 Euro zu haben sein. 4,3-Zoll ist jetzt offiziell klein.

Samsung macht das Galaxy S4 Active offiziell

Nach etlichen Leaks hat sich Samsung jetzt auch offiziell zum Galaxy S4 Active, dem etwas robusteren Bruder des S4 bekannt. Das hält nach dem Standard IP67 eine halbe Stunde einen Meter unter Wasser und Staub aus, ist also eher für Grobmotoriker und Outdoor-Freaks gedacht. Die Technik entspricht größtenteils dem S4, mit kleinen Abweichungen zum Beispiel bei der wasserdichten Kamera mit Aqua Mode für Unterwasseraufnahmen(8 Megapixel), zusätzlich zum 5-Zoll 1080p Display und dem 1,9 GHz Quadcore-Prozessor gibt es außerdem ein Barometer und Samsungs handschuhkompatibler "Glove Touch"-Technologie. Apples wirtschaftlicher und fiskaler Einfluss in Cupertino
Obwohl die geplante Eröffnung von Apples neuem «Campus 2» in Cupertino noch mindestens drei Jahre entfernt ist, hat Apple im Zuge des Bewilligungsprozesses eine Studie (PDF) veröffentlicht, welche den fiskalischen und wirtschaftlichen Einfluss von Apple auf die Stadt Cupertino aufzeigen soll.
Im Zuge der Eröffnung des neuen Campus 2 wird sich die Anzahl der Apple-Angestellten auf dem Stadtgebiet von Cupertino von aktuell 16’000 auf 23’400 erhöhen. Apple wird weiterhin auf dem Campus an der «Infinite Loop» präsent sein, während derzeit zusätzlich gemietete Räumlichkeiten in der Stadt wohl aufgegeben werden. Von den 12’000 neu geschaffenen Arbeitsplätzen im Campus 2 werden demnach 7’400 Arbeitsplätze neu in die Stadt kommen. Dabei sind die zusätzlichen 1’200 Arbeitsplätze noch nicht mit eingerechnet, welche in einer zweiten Ausbau-Etappe des Campus 2 entstehen könnten.

Apple baut Führung aus: iPhone kann in den USA Marktanteile hinzugewinnen

Intel hat neue Details zur zweiten Thunderbolt-Generation preisgegeben. Die bereits Anfang April an der NAB gezeigte neue Generation mit dem Codenamen «Falcon Ridge» bietet im Vergleich zur ersten Generation eine doppelte Bandbreite von 20 Gigabit pro Sekunde.
«Thunderbolt 2» fasst dabei die bisher getrennten Kanäle für Daten- und Video- bzw. Display-Übertragung von je 10 Gigabit pro Sekunde zusammen zu einem bidirektionalen Kanal mit 20 Gigabit pro Sekunde. Über diesen neuen bidirektionalen Kanal können gleichzeitig Daten und Video-Ausgabe übertragen werden.

Neue Gerüchte zum Mac Pro
Kurz vor der Eröffnung der WWDC werden wiederum Gerüchte angeheizt, Apple stelle anlässlich der Eröffnungskeynote einen neuen Mac Pro vor. Vor allem die gesunkenen Lagerbestände des günstigsten Mac Pros sind für einige Personen ein Indiz für eine baldige Veröffentlichung neuer Geräte. Zudem erhielt der Mac Pro seit Jahren kein signifikantes Update mehr und der Verkauf in Europa ist seit Beginn des Monats März nicht mehr erlaubt.
Lou Borella, Gründer der Facebook-Gruppe «We Want a New Macpro», glaubt nicht an die Veröffentlichung eines neuen Mac Pro anlässlich der WWDC. Seinen «Quellen» zufolge wird der neue Mac Pro erst im Herbst dieses Jahres der Öffentlichkeit vorgestellt. Researchers use Hubble to map 3D structure of exploding star
Witness now the death of a star in glorious 3D. It's not quite as exciting as all that, but astronomers have managed to map the eruptions of nova using footage from the Hubble telescope. Above are three images of T Pyxidis (that's T Pyx to its friends), a double star system located some 15,600 light-years away -- the white globular bit in the middle is the star. The researchers reported to their surprise that the ejected matter has largely stayed in the area of the star, creating a disk of debris, likely expanding but not leaving the orbit. The findings suggest that the companion in the star system helps dictate where that material goes. More info on the research can be found after the break.

Pipe geht heute an den Start: Files bis 1 GB über Facebook verschicken

Pipe hat die Beta verlassen und geht heute um 15 Uhr an den Start. Der Service erlaubt das direkte Verschicken von Files an Kontakte in Facebook mit Dateigrößen bis zu 1 GB. Das funktioniert ohne dabei eine App benutzen zu müssen, und je nachdem ob der Kontakt online ist, geht das File direkt über ein P2P-Protokoll an den Empfänger, oder es kann in der Wolke zwischengeparkt werden, dann allerdings nur bis maximal 100 MB. Intel formally christens 'Thunderbolt 2' with 20Gbps, 4K video
Intel, who originally developed Thunderbolt networking technology with the help of Apple (which made it a standard feature on most current Mac products) has revealed that the name of the improved version of Thunderbolt -- originally known by its codename, Falcon Ridge -- is to be simply "Thunderbolt 2." The improved version, which offers roughly a doubling of existing (and still under-utilized) Thunderbolt speeds, will enter the market early next year and offers both sufficient bandwidth for raw 4K video transfer as well as backward compatibility with existing cables and connectors.

Apple hat in der Nacht auf heute das erwartete Minor-Update 10.8.4 für Mountain Lion veröffentlicht. Nach 8 Beta-Versionen bringt das Update knapp 12 Wochen nach dem letzten Minor-Update diverse Korrekturen und Stabilitäts- sowie Kompatibilitätsverbesserungen. Intel formalizes Thunderbolt 2, promises products this year
While Intel gave us the technical rundown on its next iteration of Thunderbolt two months earlier, it's now announced that it will officially be known as the not-particularly-original Thunderbolt 2. Unknown filer requests re-examination of two Apple design patents
An "anonymous party," likely Samsung or one of its affiliates, has requested the US Patent and Trade Office (USPTO) reexamine two design-related patents crucial to the Apple versus Samsung patent battles. One patent being reexamined was responsible for most of the damages in the landmark US Apple versus Samsung patent lawsuit in 2012, and the second is intertwined in an Apple action against Samsung at the US International Trade Commission, due to have a final ruling in August.

Second day of DOJ e-book trial sees Penguin siding with Apple
Testimony on the second day of Apple's trial as a defendent against the US Department of Justice on allegations of conspiracy to raise book prices appears to have gone reasonably well for the Cupertino-based electronics giant, with some mixed but friendly testimony from Penguin Group USA CEO David Shanks. Though he admitted that it was "irrational enthusiasm" for the potential 80-100 million strong customer base Apple had at the time that led Penguin to accede to many of Apple's terms during negotiations over its contract, he also defended some aspects of Apple's role.

Apple developer portal now showing square app icons, not rounded
In a move that surprised developers, the Apple developer portal is displaying app icons as perfect squares with sharp edges, rather than the rounded corners normally seen. It is as yet unclear if this is a hint of changes to come in the forthcoming iOS 7 update -- which has been rumored to offer a "flatter" design eschewing most shadows and other "3D" effects -- or if it is a simple temporary removal of the rounded-corner "mask" normally covering the square icons submitted by developers while Apple tweaks the design.

Samsung Galaxy S 4 mini, GT-S7272 reach the FCC
Well, that was fast. Samsung only just unveiled the Galaxy S 4 mini last week, and today the device is swinging through the FCC as the GT-i9195. Apple issues security update for Snow Leopard, Lion, Server versions
As expected, Apple has issued Security Update 2013-002 for older versions of OS X that are limited to the security-oriented changes present in the latest Mountain Lion update, v10.8.4, which was issued earlier today. Updates for Snow Leopard (10.6), the OS X Server version of Snow Leopard, the OS X Server version of Lion (10.7) and the client version of Lion are all now available through Software Update or Apple's own Support Downloads page. Issues were found and patched for OpenSSL, QuickTime, Ruby and SMB among other areas.

ComScore: Apple, Samsung gaining hardware marketshare
Market analysts comScore MobiLens has issued its quarterly report on mobile phone usage derived from data surveys. The latest report continues to demonstrate that both Apple and Samsung are increasing usage marketshare mostly from smaller Android makers, including HTC, Motorola and LG, all of which lost ground over the past four months. Google Glass monthly update improves photos with HDR, captions
Google has committed to pushing software updates to its Glass headset each month, and a post on Google+ reveals this month' tweaks are focusing on pictures. If you're a fan of using the device for POV shots, it should take better pictures by capturing a sequence of images for improved low-light performance and HDR pictures in bright situations. App Camp for Girls would introduce girls to coding
The App Camp for Girls is a recently unveiled Indiegogo project that's designed to provide support for young girls interested in putting together iPhone and mobile apps. The camp itself is planned for a run in Portland later this year, and will allow girls to go through all of the steps of putting an app together, including brainstorming ideas, building out storyboards and putting the app together in Xcode, and then even pitching their finals apps to a panel of investors.

ITC rules in favor of Samsung, issues import ban on older AT&T iPhones, iPads
Once again the ugly patent battles between Apple and Samsung have come to a head, only this time it's Samsung enjoying a victory. According to Reuters and Bloomberg, the International Trade Commission has issued an order to Apple to stop importing AT&T models of the iPad 3G, iPad 2 3G, iPhone 4, 3GS and 3. While newer models of the iPhone and iPad no longer use the tech the ITC says is infringing (mostly iDevices with Qualcomm chips), this ban is final and can only be negated by the White House or challenged and overturned in a Federal circuit court. iPhone popular among first-time smartphone buyers
Believe it or not, many new iPhone owners are not customers switching from Android, but customers who have never owned a smartphone. These first time smartphone buyers are choosing the iPhone, especially older models, at an increasing rate, says a report in GigaOM.

Despite finding in September that Apple had not violated Samsung's patent rights and that Samsung didn't have a "domestic industry" that utilized the patents in dispute, the US International Trade Commission (ITC) has nonetheless issued a limited ban on older iOS products that utilize a disputed SEP Samsung patent in a surprise ruling on Tuesday.
