Apple has begun decorating the Moscone Center ahead of its Worldwide Developers Conference next week. 9to5Mac has posted one image of a banner inside the building featuring the tagline 'Where a whole new world's developing'. New Gmail for iPhone adds auto-categorization
Google has just released a redesigned Gmail app for iOS that takes the already powerful email tool and supercharges it. The main feature that will have Gmail users singing its praises is support for Google's auto-categorization feature. By activating auto-categorization in your email account Gmail will sort your messages by updates, social media, newsletters, and your primary feed. Users can then access their categories via the app's slide-out sidebar.
The update also comes with an improved notification system, allowing you to select which categories you receive notifications from. If you subscribe to a lot of newsletters, or haven't turned off email social media notifications, this feature will help keep whats important infront of you while cutting down on superfluous noise.

Samsung wins ITC ban of AT&T compatible iPhones and iPads due to patent infringement
Samsung got a big win in the International Trade Commission today, as the ITC handed down a final ruling finding that several models of AT&T-compatible iPhones and iPads infringe a Samsung patent, and issued an exclusion order preventing them from being sold. This final ruling comes months after an ALJ determined that Apple did not infringe any of Samsung's IP, but clearly, the commission felt differently upon its review. ITC Rules Apple Infringed on Samsung Patents, Issues Cease and Desist Order for Older Apple Devices

Finished OS X 10.8.4 update fixes problems with Wi-Fi, Exchange
Apple has released a completed v10.8.4 update for OS X Mountain Lion. The release solves numerous issues, such as compatibility problems when connecting to enterprise Wi-Fi networks, and support for Microsoft Exchange in Calendar. Zynga closes OMGPOP, the creators of Draw Something
Zynga announced yesterday that it was laying off about 18% of its work staff, or about 520 employees, which is bad news for any company. Time Warner in talks with Apple, MS, Samsung, about streaming video
Time Warner Cable is in talks with Apple, Samsung, and Microsoft for streaming video deals similar to the one it has with set-top maker Roku, CEO Glenn Britt hinted at today's Bank of America/Merill Lynch Global Telecom and Media Conference. "You should assume we're talking to everyone who makes devices like this, whether it's Samsung smart TVs, Apple, Microsoft," said Britt. Update auf Mac OS X 10.8.4 veröffentlicht
Apple hat ein Betriebssystem-Update veröffentlicht. Mac OS X steht ab sofort in der Version 10.8.4 zum Download über den Mac App Store bereit. Es handelt sich dabei um ein kleineres Wartungsupdate. Mit von der Partie ist allerdings eine neue Version von Apples Browser Safari 6.0.5. Außerdem wurde die Verbindung zu Premium-Wi-Fi-Netzwerken verbessert und die Kommunikation mit Exchange-Servern und Apples Kalender-App. Weiterhin funktionieren nun auch FaceTime-Anrufe zu Telefonnummern außerhalb der USA, und die Aktivierung des Ruhezustands nach der Nutzung von Boot Camp funktioniert, wenn man sie zuvor terminiert hatte. Asus' 4K monitor is a beast your computer probably can't tame just yet. That's okay.
Asus' new PQ321 4K monitor will be released at the end of June and brings with it some pretty beefy display capabilities. The 31.5-inch monitor can output images and video up to a resolution of 3840x3160. That's a lot of high resolution desktop for its $4,000 asking price. But is it worth it? Our friends over at The Verge were able to get a hands-on test of the monitor and have come to a simple conclusion: this screen is a beast but might be too much monitor for MacBook Pro users.

Time Warner Cable in Talks with Apple on Streaming Video Deals
According to Time Warner Cable CEO Glenn Britt, who spoke to investors at the Bank of America Merill Lynch Global Telecom and Media Conference today (via FierceCable), Time Warner is in talks with Apple, Microsoft, and Samsung over potential streaming video deals that are similar to its existing partnership with Roku. Time Warner Cable brought its authenticated cable service, TWC TV, to Roku in March. With the app, Time Warner Cable subscribers are able to watch up to 300 live TV channels with any TV connected to a Roku device, without the need for a cable box. Time Warner has a similar deal with Samsung to deliver cable programming to its connected TVs.

As promised late last month, Google has updated the iOS Gmail app to use a new inbox format. Email can now optionally be grouped into broad categories, such as Updates and Social. AirDrop soll auch für iOS umgesetzt werden

With over 500 million accounts, Apple is second only to Facebook
According to to a new research report from Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty, Apple's base of 500 million active user accounts is higher than any other company, save for Facebook which has 1.05 billion accounts. Amazon, meanwhile, checks in at third place with 200 million accounts.
A crucial difference, however, is that Apple has 500 million credit card accounts on file. Apple is therefore able to leverage its software and services in a way that competitors simply can't match.

New Apple Stores Coming to New Jersey, Utah and Virginia [Mac Blog]
Apple is planning on opening three new retail locations in the near future, reports ifoAppleStore. Apple releases economic impact report for new headquarters
Apple's new headquarters building is still years away from completion in 2016, and as part of the approval process for the new facility, Apple has just released a report prepared by Keyser Marston Associates for the City of Cupertino, California that details the "Economic and Fiscal Impacts Generated by Apple in Cupertino."
Apple Campus 2 will include the "spaceship" office building that will house about 12,000 employees, plus other buildings (research and development labs, a central plant, auditorium, and fitness center) that add another 1,000 people to the mix. The report doesn't include the impact of 1,200 more employees who will eventually be added as part of a Phase 2 building program.

Apple wins US patent on NFC-based data transfer concept
The US Patent and Trademark Office has granted Apple a patent on an NFC-based data transfer technology, notes AppleInsider. The concept would let people quickly transfer files between devices by setting up an impromptu peer-to-peer connection. An iPhone, for instance, could be "tapped" against a Mac to open up a connection, and then copy over documents from the Mac. The files wouldn't be copied via NFC, but rather over a Wi-Fi connection that the NFC link would facilitate.

Physicians who use mobile apps prefer iPhones and iPads
A recent survey conducted by Black Book Rankings reveals that physicians are increasingly relying on mobile apps in their daily practice. The trend is somewhat attributable to the Affordable Care Act which provides incentives to doctors and hospitals to digitize Electronic Health Records (EHRs) and make them available via mobile devices.
As a result, physicians are now using mobile applications in their practice more than ever before. Some functions of medical-based mobile apps include the ability to remotely view and update charts, coordinate schedules and appointments, place lab orders, access patient records and even prescribe medication.

Second-gen iPad mini production delayed to November, sources claim
Mass production of a fifth-generation iPad should start in July or August -- ahead of a launch in the same quarter -- but production of a second-gen iPad mini has been delayed a month to November, say DigiTimes sources. The reason for the delay is unknown, but it's speculated that Apple may be staggering the launch of the Mini so it has less of an impact on full-sized iPad sales. Alternately, suppliers may simply be unable to cope with starting Mini production in October.

Entwicklung an Open-Source-Browser Camino eingestellt
Nach 10 Jahren Entwicklung wurde die Arbeit am Mac-Browser «Camino» nun eingestellt, dies teilte Projekt-Leiter Stuart Morgan Ende letzter Woche auf der Camino-Projektseite mit.
Ende 2001 startete bei Netscape ein Projekt, bei dem es darum ging, die Firefox zugrunde liegende Browser-Engine «Gecko» in einer mit Apples Cocoa-Framework entwickelten Applikation auszuführen. Firefox, damals noch «Phoenix» lief in einer cross-platform Interface-Markup-Sprache, weshalb Firefox auch viele Jahre lang nicht auf native OS-X-Funktionen und -Ausgaben zurückgreifen konnte. Anfang 2002 stiess Dave Hyatt zum Projekt, welches fortan als «Chimera» bekannt wurde. Dave Hyatt startete zuvor die Entwicklung des Firefox bzw. Phyoenix-Browsers und wechselte später im Jahr 2002 zu Apple, wo er das WebKit- und Safari-Team übernahm und bis heute vorsteht. Mike Pinkerton übernahm die Leitung des Projektes. MSI's MouseBook is a laptop whose trackpad doubles as a standalone mouse
The problem with laptop trackpads: they're usually not very good. But would turning the touchpad into a mouse solve the problem? Perhaps. That's what MSI seems to be attempting with its MouseBook concept. In essence, it's a laptop with a trackpad that can pop out and then be used as a standalone mouse. As you can see in the photo above, there's a release switch for removing the pad. Once it's out, you can move it across your desk as you would a mouse, as opposed to just using it as an external trackpad. US Justice Department makes opening arguments in e-book price fixing case
Apple's e-book price fixing trial began yesterday in New York and the U.S. Justice Department wasted no time painting a picture purporting to show that Apple, along with 5 publishing houses, colluded to artificially raise the price of e-books.
In a series of 81 slides released on Monday, the Justice Department laid out its case as it attempts to prove that Apple and five publishing companies violated the Sherman Antitrust Act. The five publishers at issue include the Penguin Group, HarperCollins, Simon & Schuster, the Hachette Book Group, and MacMillan. Notably, all five publishers have since settled, thereby leaving Apple the only company actually taking the case to trial.

3's data network dies, UK iPhone owners left without 3G
Last night I was walking my dog and I went to check my iPhone and noticed I didn't have a 3G signal. Sadly, this was nothing new since I am on UK network 3. I chose the network because they have unlimited data sim-only plans, but I soon discovered it's hard to get a signal a lot of times -- especially when I'm indoors. Still, being on the heath last night and not having a data signal at all was odd -- even for 3. But this morning I found out what happened: most of their data network went down and most of it remains down at this time.
As Sky News reports, 3 has confirmed the data outage problems, which they are calling "intermittent."

Gestensteuerung: Intel will Creative Senz3D Camera in Produktdesigns integrieren

Intel hat auf Computex in Taipeh angekündigt, die Senz3D Camera von Creative in seine zukünftigen Produktdesigns zu integrieren und damit unter anderem Gestensteuerung á la Kinect zu ermöglichen. Die Senz3D soll zwar zunächst im Sommer als Add-on auf den Markt kommen, aber irgendwann 2014 die bisher übliche Webcam in Intels Referenzdesigns für Laptops ersetzen. Neben der Gestensteuerung beherrscht die 3D-Kamera übrigens auch Kunststückchen wie das Ausblenden des Hintergrunds, was für Videotelefonate interessant sein könnte.

84 Seiten umfasst die Patentschrift mit der Nummer 8.458.363, die das US-Patentamt bestätigt hat. E Ink, a manufacturer of monochrome displays, has announced it is creating a 1.73-inch e-paper screen for use with smartwatches. Apple soll iAd für iRadio vorbereiten
Die Entwickler aus Apples iAd-Abteilung sollen aktuell intensiv darum bemüht sein, neue Wege zu finden, um Werbung möglichst effektiv in den erwarteten Radio-Dienst von Apple einbringen zu können — dies weiss Bloomberg zu berichten. Durch eine enge Verbindung zwischen iTunes und dem erwarteten «iRadio» könnten Musik-Labels beispielsweise direkt Werbung im Radio-Dienst schalten, um den Absatz der eigenen Musikstücke zu fördern.
In der Radio-Werbung sieht Apples CEO Tim Cook angeblich ein grosses Potential, während man den Markt für klassische mobile Werbung nicht mehr so stark bearbeiten will. Übertaktet: Intels Haswell Core i7 läuft mit 6,88 GHz auf ASUS Motherboard

Haswell auf Herz und Nieren geprüft: nachdem sie gestern schon den Overclocking-Wettbewerb von Corsair gewonnen hatten, haben sich die Übertakter beim ASUS ROG Event auf der Computex den Intel Haswell Core i7-4770K vorgenommen. Dessen Taktrate haben sie von 3,5 GHz auf 6,88 GHz hochgejagt, dabei wurde der auf einem ASUS Maximus VI Extreme Motherboard sitzende Prozessor immer mal wieder zwischendurch mit einem Schluck flüssigen Stickstoff gekühlt. Nebenbei wurde auch das DRAM auf 4,1 GHz gepusht, was bisher die schnellste Frequenz für Haswell sein soll.

Nach dem ersten Foto, das angeblich eine frühe Alpha-Version von iOS 7 zeigen soll, ist jetzt ein zweiter und etwas schärferer Schnappschuss aufgetaucht. Zwar immer noch ziemlich grieselig und verschwommen, lässt sich hier dennoch besser das flachere Design der Icons erkennen.

Seagate hat damit begonnen, seine nur fünf Millimeter hohe „Laptop Ultrathin HDD“ an OEMs auszuliefern. Intel VP: 'Lack of LTE' hampers our approach to the US smartphone market
During Intel's press conference today, we got a brief glimpse into how Intel's smartphones are fairing globally. The noticeable gap, however, was the US. Answering questions during a Q&A session following the Computex keynote, Tom Kilroy, Executive Vice President of Sales said that there was a major reason why it was lacking US carrier support: LTE.

Beta-Entwicklung von OS X 10.8.4 abgeschlossen
Nach acht veröffentlichten Vorabversionen für OS X 10.8.4 hat Apple den Entwicklern zu Beginn des Monats mitgeteilt, dass die Testphase nun beendet worden sei. Bei dieser Gelegenheit bedankte sich Apple bei den Testern für das umfangreiche Feedback. Damit haben sie massgeblich zur Entdeckung von Fehlern beigetragen, so der Mac-Hersteller.
Bei den acht Vorabversionen mussten sich die Tester vor allem auf Safari, Wi-Fi und die Grafik-Treiber konzentrieren. In der letzten Vorabversion wurde auch die Kompatibilität von Microsoft Exchange im Kalender verbessert und andere kleinere Änderungen wurden vorgenommen.

Intel teases fanless Core processor tablet at Computex
It was barely a glimpse, but Intel's pushing the physical limits of its 4th generation Haswell processors. Here on stage, at Computex, we saw one very slender (and as-yet unnamed) tablet that packs the aforementioned processors without the need for fans for cooling. Sure, we've seen fanless Windows 8 tablets with Clover Trail-based hardware, but never with the potency of Intel's Core processor series. Alas, slimline profile (and hybrid skills) aside, that's all we can say for the moment. We'll update if we glean any more details from Intel.

A claim from Bloomberg says that Apple is revamping its iAd division to support what will be its free but ad-supported streaming music service (dubbed "iRadio" by pundits), expected to be announced at next week's Worldwide Developers Conference and modelled on the popular user-guided, algorithm-picked music station Pandora. Hat ein wenig länger gedauert, aber jetzt hat Twitter die offizielle Vine-App auch für Android veröffentlicht. Die hat die gleiche Funktionalität wie die iOS-Version, scrollen und Playback des Feeds der 6-Sekunden Filmchen läuft vielleicht sogar ein bisschen schneller, dafür dauert es ein bisschen länger, bis die Vines berechnet sind und das Facebook-Sharing ist noch nicht da. 20’000 PostAuto-Kunden nutzen kostenloses WiFi
Im letzten Frühling begann die PostAuto Schweiz AG damit, ihre Postauto-Flotte mit WLAN-Hot-Spots auszurüsten. Über ein Jahr nach dem Start des Projekts hat das Post-Unternehmen nun eine erste Zwischenbilanz gezogen.
PostAuto Schweiz ist sehr zufrieden mit dem Start des Projektes. Innerhalb eines Jahres wurden 1’250 Postautos mit einem kostenlosen Hot-Spot ausgerüstet. Damit kann auf 70 Prozent aller Postauto-Linien ein kostenloser Internetzugang gewährt werden. Auf den anderen Linien ist gemäss dem Unternehmen der Empfang zu schlecht, um einen WLAN-Dienst anbieten zu können. Die von PostAuto Schweiz verbauten Antennen können ohne grossen Aufwand für LTE freigegeben werden, womit in Zukunft ein noch schnellerer Internetzugang möglich sei.

Zynga lays off 18% of mobile and social staff
Zynga has announced it will be laying off 18 percent of their mobile and social staff, around 520 people. The company cites stabilizing finances for the mass firing. According to Zynga's official announcement laid off employees will be receiving severance packages.

Wordpress for iOS gets a new user interface
The Wordpress app for iOS has been updated again, and it features a brand-new interface for browsing, writing and editing posts on the popular blogging platform. As you can see above, the new interface apes Facebook's "side menu" (as have a few other big apps lately), and the update also fixes some other bugs, and adds some performance improvements in regards to emoticons and notifications in general.
Wordpress for iOS is an open-source project, and thus you can download it straight from the App Store any time for free.

Apple's timing on bond sale will save company $724 million or more
Whether by coincidence or foresight, Apple could hardly have picked a better day than April 30 to have sold its first bonds since 1996, raising $17 billion to be used towards stock buybacks and increased dividends. Apple has announced that it intends to return $100 billion to stockholders over the next few years, but opted to go into debt to do so rather than "repatriate" some $45 billion in foreign profits -- finding that historically low interest rates would cost the company dramatically less than paying the 35 percent corporate tax on the offshore earnings.

Im App Store gibt es keine Software-Demos – gezahlt wird in Raten oder für die Vollversion. Mittlerweile sind die Hälfte aller iOS-Downloads ‘gratis’. Audioengine D1 – ein (iPad-)Kopfhörer-Verstärker
Ich habe keine audiophilen Ohren. Bereits die ersten (unterirdischen) CD-Mp3-Rips, die sich meine Generation in den 90ern reinzog, disqualifizieren auf Lebenszeit. WWDC-App 2013 mit Konferenz-Videos für Entwickler
Apples neue WWDC-App für alle registrierte Entwickler (kostenlos; universal; Link), bereits mit einen flunderflachen Programm-Icon, beinhaltet in diesem Jahr erstmals die Videos der dort abgehaltenen Vorträge. Chrome for iOS updated, improves voice search and speed
Google has updated Chrome for iOS to version 27, bringing with it a number of new features aimed at Apple users looking for a Siri alternative. Like the recently updated desktop and Android versions, iOS users can verbally ask Chrome a question and get a verbal response. Chrome now talks back to you when it answers your questions. Canadian regulatory committee debuts wireless carrier code of conduct
The supervisory Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) unveiled a new code of conduct for wireless providers, which, among other things, allows customers to cancel wireless contracts after two years, similar to US contracts, without cancellation penalties. Other notable changes include caps on roaming charges with a corresponding cessation of service, and the ability of the consumer to request a subsidized phone's unlock after three months.

Bloomberg details Apple's rumored radio service, associated iAd revamp

Qualcomm unveils Snapdragon 400 with built-in LTE, new reference tablet design
Qualcomm doesn't want to reserve the fastest wireless technology for its highest-end processors: it's launching a new quad-core Snapdragon 400 chip, the MSM8926, with both 3G and LTE built-in. The company is also introducing new 7- and 10-inch versions of Qualcomm Reference Design tablet that will be based on the company's earlier, 3G-only Snapdragon 400 processors.

Apple Adds Ship to Store Option for Refurbished Products
The Apple Online Store recently added a new "Ship to Store" option for refurbished products, allowing customers to pick up refurbished items at their local Apple Retail Store. Lawyer at Apple law firm started planning patent attack just after iPhone introduction
Ars Technica has a fascinating story about a lawyer for one of Apple's hired law firms and his close relationship with a patent company that sued the Cupertino company for infringement.
This tale of legal intrigue revolves around lawyer John McAleese who worked for Morgan, Lewis & Bockius. At the same time his law firm was working with Apple, he was helping his wife, Jennifer McAleese, launch a patent company, FlatWorld Interactives, that targeted Apple and its iPhone. This conflict of interest dates back to 2007, when the original iPhone was released.

Terraria digging its way into mobile platforms
Terraria is a Steam title that just recently arrived on consoles, and now publisher 505 Games has announced that it's coming to iOS as well. The game is a 2D variant of the Minecraft-style sandbox genre, where players can hack away at squares of various types, recombining and reusing them to build machines, magic items, or even dig on down and find various bosses and dungeon environments. The mobile version, says 505, will support leaderboards, achievements, and Facebook integration as well, to share screenshots and other information about what you're doing in the game.

DOJ lays out case against Apple in opening statements in e-book trial
The opening statements by the Department of Justice and Apple at the start of the trial between the two over e-book pricing have been given, with the DOJ claiming that Apple facilitated agreements with the big four publishers (five at the time; Hatchette and Penguin later merged) to present a unified front that demanded the "agency model" of pricing (where publishers set the e-book prices) in order to break Amazon of its predatory pricing habit of pricing e-books below its own cost -- which was having a deleterious effect on both e-book competitors and physical book sales.

Plants vs Zombies 2 exclusively on iOS at launch
Ever since Plants vs. Zombies 2 was first announced, I've been crossing my fingers that we wouldn't have to wait long for an iOS release. The original game was hugely successful on Apple's touchscreen devices, but of course it was first seen on PC, and then eventually made its way out to every other platform on the face of the Earth. It turns out, however, that I shouldn't have worried about the sequel at all. Not only is Plants vs. Zombies 2 coming to iOS, but it's coming to iOS first and exclusively for a limited time.

Apple's iAd Staff Preparing to Handle iRadio Advertising Duties
Apple's iAd engineers and sales personnel are preparing to handle new advertising duties to support Apple's new streaming music service nicknamed iRadio, Bloomberg reports. Western Digital ships 7mm-thick 1TB 2.5-inch drive
Western Digital, today announced it is shipping the its thinnest 1TB hard drive with its new 2.5-inch WD Blue 7 mm hard drive.
