This week continues to be all about the London 2012 Olympics, with most shows diving out of the way of NBC's ratings juggernaut. We do have a few premiers and several season finales though, so give the schedule a close look to make sure you don't miss a favorite's wrap-up. Nuance's 'Nina' vocal assistant SDK may voiceprint users for authentication
Nuance has introduced a brand-new voice interface for smartphones that it's calling Nina -- you can see it in action in a video just posted online. Nina is a mobile OS interface that's open to third-party developers, so it's essentially a Siri that any app developer (willing to read through the documentation and implement the API) can use in their own apps. And it comes with an extra feature: in addition to simply understanding commands and feeding back information, Nina can also use your voice as a passcode, double-checking who you are just from your vocal tones.

Apple touts iAd with new Land Rover case study
Apple has posted a new case study, featuring Land Rover, in order to promote its iAd network to advertisers. The business-to-business marketing refers to the case of Range Rover Evoque, for which Land Rover is said to have wanted to "engage an all-new audience." The team at iAd "identified the perfect target and worked with Mindshare and Y&R Group to bring the Land Rover experience to them [the audience] in an innovative way," according to Apple's website. The company is particularly proud of the amount of time people spend with iAd spots.

Rumored HTC Verizon phablet may land soon, with 1080p screen and 1.5GHz Snapdragon
Samsung and LG have already embraced the tiny-tablet form factor. It only makes sense that HTC would want to carve out a niche of this niche for themselves. Mountain Lion 101: Notification Center in a hot corner
Apple's Mountain Lion introduced Notification Center to the Mac. This handy feature lets notification-aware apps display pop-up style alerts when something changes, like an incoming email message, Twitter mention, Calendar appointment and more.
Apple notes that you can access Mountain Lion's Notification Center by swiping your trackpad or Magic Trackpad from left to right. Alternatively, you can click the Notification Center icon in your Mac's menu bar (here's a more thorough look at Notification Center options). Those are great, but I use a third option.

Rumor: Apple to add smaller Dock connector to all iOS devices this fall

iOS beta 4 strips out YouTube app, changes Maps, Passbook
In a surprise move, Apple has stripped the native YouTube app out of iOS 6 beta 4, developers note. The app has been a staple of iOS since 2007, when Apple in fact promoted it as one of the original iPhone's selling points. Google has since fallen out of Apple's favor, though, and the iOS 6 version of Maps substitutes Google content either with Apple's work or content created by a host of third parties. Neues iPhone: Bilder der SIM-Schublade

'Entire' iOS lineup to get new dock format as soon as Sept.
Apple is planning to update the "entire" iOS device lineup to use its new dock connector format, possibly in one shot at its September 12th event, say sources for iMore. The sources are the same who leaked some of the first information about the format in February. Specifically Apple is said to be planning new iPhone, iPod nano, and iPod touch models, as well as the rumored "mini" iPad, and an updated 9.7-inch iPad.

YouTube app removed from iOS 6 but not iOS 5 and older; Google working on a standalone version
Apple just got in touch with us regarding the removal of the YouTube app in the latest beta of iOS 6, and while it wouldn't say much, it did confirm the obvious: it's not there for a reason. The licensing deal it had with Google "has ended, but users can still use YouTube via the Safari web app." The company did affirm, however, that Google "is working" on another version -- presumably a standalone app that'll have to survive the same App Store approval process as

iOS YouTube standalone app to vanish in iOS 6
It seems like only yesterday that one of our readers was bemoaning the poor playback quality of the iOS YouTube app, and wishing that Apple would do something to fix it. Given that YouTube is a Google property, and the two former BFFs aren't on the best of terms nowadays, it's no wonder that the video playback app has languished. Mobile Safari does a bang-up job with most YouTube videos, so it seemed logical that the days of the standalone app might be numbered.

WiFi-Extending Robot is built like a tank -- we talk to the people behind the project (video)
It's a fairly menacing sight, an aluminum robot sporting big tank treads -- that is, until you watch one of its creators do a handstand on top of the thing in a pair of cargo shorts. Neuer Dock-Connector angeblich noch in diesem Jahr in allen iOS-Geräten
Bereits seit Anfang des Jahres halten sich Gerüchte, dass Apple das neue iPhone mit einem kleineren Dock-Connector ausstatten werde. iMore hat nun von seinen Quellen erfahren, dass der iPhone-Hersteller noch in diesem Jahr alle seine iOS-Geräte mit dem neuen Dock-Connector ausstatten werde.

Apple releases iOS 6 beta 4 to developers
We are receiving word that Apple has released beta 4 of the upcoming iOS 6 software, which is expected to be released this fall.
As with previous updates, this update is expected to deliver bug fixes for developers who are testing their applications with the new operating system. Apple seeds iOS 6 beta 4 to developers: here's the changelog
Right around 20 days after iOS 6 beta 3 was beamed out to developers, beta 4 is now making its way into those same hands via an OTA download. We've just confirmed that the files are indeed being pushed out, with the changelog showing fixes related to Facebook integration, the Address Book, authorization statues, and Apple TV / Bonjour workflows. You'll also get a patched-up Dictionary, iTunes and Maps, amongst other things. Amazon begins renting paper textbooks
Amazon has been renting out Kindle editions of textbooks for sometime now, but not all the educational tomes you need may be available in electronic form. And, believe it or not, some people just plain prefer paper to E-ink -- especially since its much easier to take notes in the margins. Now many of the more expensive texts on the site also feature a rent option. Most are in the $30 to $60 range and are rented by the semester, which Amazon counts as 130 days. The role of the Mac at NASA and JPL is shown off by Mars Curiosity mission
My colleague Steve Sande touched on this subject of all the Macs at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in an earlier post, and I've been doing some digging to find out more about all the Mac love at our space agency and its field centers. JPL is managed by Caltech, but it falls under NASA's administrative and funding jurisdiction.

Best Buy founder offers $8.5B to take company private
The founder of Best Buy has offered to buy the company for around $8.5 billion, reports say. Richard Schulze, who resigned as company chairman after ex-CEO Brian Dunn was investigated for ìpersonal misconductî issues, has offered to pay $24 to $26 per share for the retailer in an effort to take the company private, according to Bloomberg. Best Buy has confirmed receiving the proposal and says it will be considering it in the near future.

Nuance offers iOS, Android SDK for Siri-like Nina assistant
Nuance has released a software development kit for its previously announced virtual-assistant software, named Nina (Nuance Interactive Natural Assistant). The SDK will allow developers to add voice-based features to their apps, though Nuance suggests Nina is geared for businesses that want to automate their mobile product support, rather than providing the more general appointment scheduling and message composition services offered by Siri and Google Now.

AT&T details new mobile sharing plans
In a post on the company's blog, AT&T has detailed the options customers will have when choosing a mobile data sharing plan. eBay Now for iOS offers same-day product delivery in San Francisco
Just when you thought eBay was slowly fading away into obscurity as the online equivalent of a garage sale, the company has rolled out something new called eBay Now. eBay provides users in a beta program (signup form here) with an iOS app with which they can browse and purchase merchandise from a number of local stores and then have the swag delivered to them the same day.

eBay trials same-day delivery option in iOS app
Auction site eBay is experimenting with same-day delivery through its new mobile app. The eBay Now beta app for iOS now lists the same-day delivery option for $5, though the service is limited to San Francisco and orders in excess of $25. Images leak of alleged nano-SIM tray for new iPhone
Photos of what is said to be the new nano-SIM tray for the next-generation iPhone have started leaking out of China, according to reports. Nano-SIM is a relatively recent development, since Apple's design for the format is only said to have been approved by ETSI in June. IDC: Apple tops in mobile revenue, operating profits
AllThingsD's John Paczkowski, reporting on some of the numbers released by IDC last week, notes that although Samsung shipped almost double the number of smartphones that Apple did, it makes absolutely no difference because Apple "far outshines its rivals in both revenue and operating profits."
Apple shipped only 6 percent of the industry total of smartphones and tablets, yet thanks to its immense gross margins the company pulled in 43 percent of the industry's revenues (above) and 77 percent of the operating profits (below).

Trotzdem reißt uns das Projekt von Mike Senna irgendwie nicht vom Hocker, obwohl der Bastler "zwischen 3200 und 3800 Stunden" an einem "lebensnahen" Wall-E gebosselt hat. Was uns daran nun stört? Macs abound at NASA/JPL Mars Curiosity mission control
For those of us who stayed up late last night to watch the streaming coverage of the Curiosity rover's landing on Mars, it was a treat to see the huge numbers of MacBooks, iPads, and even iPhones that were in the control room at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California.
The image above shows one of the EDL Ops (Entry, Descent and Landing Operations) engineers gazing intently at the screen of a MacBook Pro at incoming data. Other photos we've seen show a conference room full of engineers and scientists at JPL sitting around a table loaded with MacBook Pros with nary a Lenovo or Dell laptop in sight.

Hacker tricks AppleCare into exposing writer's iCloud login
A writer for Wired, Mat Honan, says he has confirmed with both Apple and the hacker that victimized him that his iCloud account was recently compromised by a "social engineering" trick with AppleCare. The hacker managed to get an AppleCare support staffer to skip security questions, and then reset Honan's password, giving the hacker complete access to anything tied to Honan's iCloud account or email address. We've got a good few updates rolling in on the Galaxy Note 10.1 front today. For starters, Samsung has announced that the S-Pen equipped slate will available globally from August in WiFi and 3G varieties, with an LTE version coming in later in the year. The press release after the break also confirms that the Note 10.1 will indeed possess a quad-core Exynos processor, rather than the dual-core engine seen in our initial hands-on -- although we'd already gleaned that much from retailer listings.

Hintergrund: Man will herausfinden, ob der Herzschlag der Tiere messbar schneller wird, wenn Gefahr in Verzug ist. Nach einem simulierten Wolfsangriff auf die Herde was das Ergebnis klar: Nähert sich ein wildes Tier der Herde, steigt die Herzschlagfrequenz der Tiere spürbar von 60-80 auf bis zu 225 Schläge pro Minute.

Angriff auf iCloud-Account: Journalist verliert iPhone-, iPad- und MacBook-Air-Daten
Wenn die Kontrolle über den eigenen iCloud-Account verloren geht, dann ist das Risiko für die eigenen Daten und Geräte groß. Das musste der Journalist Mat Honans schmerzlich erfahren, als kurz hintereinander alle Daten auf dem iPhone, iPad und MacBook Air verschwunden waren. Mat Honan, der früher für die IT-Website Gizmodo schrieb, ahnte nichts Böses, als sein iPhone plötzlich neu startete. Appleís fourth witness in the California-based Apple vs. Samsung trial was a Samsung employee, Samsungís US Chief Strategy Officer Justin Denison, who was questioned about some Samsung documents as well as a deposition he gave in 2011. Prototype heart monitor collar could let sheep text their shepherd, tattle on creeping wolves

HTC Proto als möglicher Nachfolger des One V aufgetaucht

NASA's Curiosity Mars landing successful, first pictures trickling in
After "seven minutes of terror" involving guided entry, parachute and powered descent, and even a sky crane, NASA"s Curiosity rover has successfully touched down on the surface of Mars. Better yet, the 2000lbs (900kg) science lab has established communications with Earth and is sending back telemetry along with the first pictures of Gale crater. Rumor: Apple looking at buying The Fancy
Apple is said to be considering purchasing e-commerce and sharing site The Fancy, according to reports. Business Insider reports that the iDevice maker has been in talks with executives from The Fancy, though details of the financial negotiations have yet to be revealed. Verizon's HopeLine app for Android provides resources and support for victims of domestic violence
Verizon's HopeLine program has recycled old phones since 2001 by giving them (along with 3,000 minutes of service) to victims of domestic abuse so that they can talk to emergency and support services when needed. Now, Verizon has released a HopeLine app for Android that not only provides direct access to support services and the National Domestic Violence Hotline, but also allows users to engage others involved in domestic violence awareness by sharing their photos and videos. Cell-infused 'spray-on-skin' helps leg ulcers heal more quickly
Spray-on medical solutions packed with cells certainly seem to be catching on.
