Trojan targets Mac-using activists in China
There's a new backdoor trojan exploit out there for Mac users that appears to originate in China, specifically targeted at political activists in the Uighur movement against that country. The trojan appears in email inboxes as a picture attachment which, when opened, secretly installs information gathering and remote control tools, characteristic of advanced persistent threat (or APT malware).
Security experts say that the trojan was almost certainly created in China, and when you combine that fact with connections to certain required servers in that country (as well as an observation that some of the debug code in the attack is in English), it seem

Google has released an update to its iOS app formerly known as Google Places, renaming it to Google+ Local and adding integration with Google+ for reviews along with Zagat summaries. Beats buyout of MOG worth $14 million, splits company not-so-neatly into two
More official details are emerging from Beats Electronics' acquisition of MOG, and they paint a considerably messier picture of the deal than we saw just a day ago. Apple's facing a growing problem on its App Store platform: ranking manipulation. While a lot of the spotlight areas are curated by humans, the rankings are generally not. Instead, computer-driven algorithms determine where each app falls in the various rankings for the store and each section.

Verizon stops subsidizing prices of 4G LTE tablets
Verizon has now stopped subsidizing the mobile broadband radio-equipped tablets it sells, which has resulted in a significant increase in their purchase prices. While there are no contracts buyers will need to sign, the prices reflect those in other stores, so the least expensive 16GB 3G New iPad costs $630. The move was prompted after Verizon introduced Share Everything plans last month.

Drop in Wintek sales may hint at next-gen iPhone design
A sharp fall in Wintek's June sales could signal that the company has lost out on orders for next-generation Apple products, specifically a new iPhone, says Topeka Capital Markets' Brian White. The analyst notes that on average, Wintek's June sales have grown 1 percent month-over-month. Apple tests new iCloud beta features
Developers who are enrolled in the iOS 6 beta are now able to see a new iCloud Beta portal at beta.icloud.com that is complete with new versions of Calendar and Find My iPhone, as well as two new iCloud additions -- Reminders and Notes.

The Google Places iOS app has been rebranded as Google+ Local and now offers both voice search and Zagat ratings. The app breaks down locations around a user into several categories, such as restaurants, hotels, and bars. Tapping on a category brings up a list of all the businesses in a user's surrounding area and provides contact information, directions, and reviews for each. Apple has sent out a memo to developers, informing them of a new "Food and Drink" category coming to the App Store, reports say. The classification is broad, including "apps that help users cook and bake, mix drinks, manage recipes, find new restaurants and bars, and learn what their friends like to eat and drink," according to Apple's language. California fast-tracks Apples new headquarters
Apple's building a new campus in Cupertino and the process should proceed smoothly now that the project has been given fast track status by California Governor Jerry Brown. "Apple's state-of-the art campus brings at least $100 million dollars in investment to California and generates no additional greenhouse gas emissions," said Brown in a statement sent to The Mercury News and reported on SiliconValley.com.

Apple is indeed working on a 7.85-inch model of the iPad, using IGZO (indium gallium zinc oxide) panels made by Sharp, according to anonymous industry sources. While both claims have been made before, rumors about a smaller iPad have largely quieted in recent weeks. Apple to add food and drink category to App Store
Yesterday, Apple sent out a letter to developers detailing a new Food and Drink category that is coming to the App Store in a few weeks. The category is to include "apps that help users cook and bake, mix drinks, manage recipes, find new restaurants and bars, and learn what their friends like to eat and drink."
Pertinent applications, many of which are currently listed in the Lifestyle category of the App Store, will be moved automatically to the new category by Apple. There are currently thousands of apps for managing recipes and finding restaurants, and the upcoming iOS 6 Maps application will add to the mix by including Yelp check-ins.

Na, das ist doch mal eine Überraschung. Da bringen die MTV Networks ein Spiel für Smartphones und es hat nichts mit Musik zu tun. Stattdessen erlebt ihr in dem von der Chocolate Liberation Front entwickelten Spiel die Reise von Oscura, der dafür verantwortlich ist, das erloschene Licht eines Leuchtturms wieder zu entfachen. Oscura selbst ist ein seltsam anmutendes, mit Krallenhänden ausgestattes Wesen, dass sich nicht nur mit stachelbesetzten Abgründen und herumschwingenden Äxten auseinandersetzen, sondern auch noch bizarren Monstern ausweichen muss.
Spielerisch bleibt “Oscura” dabei denkbar traditionell. Auf einer 2D-Fläche rennt ihr von rechts nach links, oben nach unten, links nach rechts und weicht dabei allerhand Gefahren aus. Auf komplizierte Puzzle, wie bei “Limbo”, verzichtet Chocolate Liberation Front und setzt stattdessen voll auf altbekannte Jump Run-Action. Im Gegensatz zu vielen Genre-Kollegen sind die sehr bizarren und gelegentlich angstmachenden Monster jedoch nicht zu besiegen. Stat

Apple faces potential suspension of sales in Italy
Apple is in hot water in Italy over its warranty policy, which does not comply with Italian law. Apple products come with a free one-year warranty that can be extended with the purchase of an AppleCare warranty. Under Italian law, the company is obligated to provide two years of free warranty service. The country's AGCM competition and market authority has warned Apple about its non-compliance and fined the company 900,000 Euros. Apple appealed the fine, but lost in court earlier this year, says Reuters.

Kodak patent sale a go despite claims by Apple, FlashPoint
A US bankruptcy court has approved a Kodak effort to auction off over 1,100 patents, reports Agence France-Presse. Potential buyers must submit bids on a confidential basis; Kodak expects the auction to be held in early August. Handwriting is one of those things that seems like it should be easy on the iPad, but, in reality, it is fairly difficult. Unlike Apple's legendarily quirky handwriting recognition on the Newton or the Windows tablets of more recent vintage, the iPad is designed primarily for finger-based input, not for longhand wirting with a stylus.

Micron to acquire Apple supplier Elpida in memory shakeup
US-based Micron Technology has entered into an agreement to acquire bankrupt Japanese DRAM maker Elpida for $2.5 billion, according to Digitimes. Elpida is remains a key component supplier for Apples new iPad and iPhone 4S, and will propel Micron to the number 2 position in memory chip fabrication behind only Samsung with a 24 percent share of the global market. Like a number of its Japanese compatriots, Elpida had struggled to cope with the challenge posed by the Korean tech giant and filed for bankruptcy protection in February after it could not pay back $1.89 billion in debt due in April.

Beta iCloud site adds iOS-like Notes, Reminders as web apps
Apple developers working on the iCloud beta version saw two new apps added to the array of iCloud services today, with online versions of the iOS apps Reminders and Notes going live with a "beta" tag on them. Also featured as being "in beta" are updated Calendar and Find My iPhone, both brought over from the Mobile Me service that was recently closed. O2 says calling just fifth most-used task on smartphones, suggests we call them 'best buds' instead
Virtually anyone who's been a frequent smartphone user for the past few years has already suspected it, but O2 UK has provided some possible evidence in a study: calling is one of the last things we do these days. Although the number hasn't gone down, the 12.1 minutes of time study subjects spend talking every day is just fifth-highest on the list of what they do with their smartphones. Google Chrome searches redirecting to blank.html, but there's a fix
There's no word yet on what exactly is causing it, but various Google Chrome users are reporting that searches from the omnibox / address bar that go nowhere. While the instant results appear properly, once the user hits enter they're sent to a blank.html page that's just that, blank. There's a Google Groups thread 116 posts long of people noticing the issue going back a few hours and we're seeing it on our end also. In the thread, users suggest going into the settings menu, selecting "Manage Search Engines", adding a new search engine with the url http://www.google.com/search?q=%s (it can be named anything)

Apple refused emergency injunction versus One X, EVO 3G LTE
Despite Apple's harshly-phrased claim that HTC not only continues to infringe a patent in violation of US International Trade Commission (ITC) but is lying about it, the agency denied the emergency request to have the HTC One X and EVO 3G LTE (among others) stopped at the border. The Taiwan-manufactured phones were allowed into the US following injunction after HTC assured Customs and Border Protection that the Apple patent had been engineered around, and the phones were no longer infringing on any patents.

T-Mobile 'network data issue' knocking some subscribers offline
Over the last couple of hours we've seen a steadily increasing flow of tips from users reporting their T-Mobile data service is completely out on 2G, 3G and 4G,, and now the company has confirmed the problem. According to the tweet from its official account the "network data issue" is only affecting service for some of its customers, which jibes with the reports we've received of some users still connecting without a problem. Samsung denied stay of Galaxy Tab 10.1 injunction
US District Court Judge Lucy Koh rejected Samsung's attempt to lift the injunction against US sales of the Galaxy Tab 10.1 pending appeal. ITC denies Apple's request for emergency ban against HTC products
Just like they have been, products like the One X and Evo 4G LTE will continue to pour through US Customs, as the ITC has now denied Apple's request for an emergency ban against the alleged infringing products. The news follows Apple's request for an emergency ban itself, in which the Cupertino outfit accused HTC of making false statements in order to bypass the ITC's exclusion order. New China lawsuit goes after Apple for 'Snow Leopard' name
Just a day after Proview was able to wrangle $60 million out of Apple by not honoring its original handover of the iPad trademark, another copyright holder is attempting a shakedown of its own by suing Apple over a trademark of the Chinese translation of "Snow Leopard" ("Xuebao") that Apple never used. Samsung may have been quick to appeal Judge Lucy Koh's decision to halt Galaxy Tab 10.1 sales, but the woman with the gavel isn't bending. HBO Go update supports Android tablets up to ICS
When HBO Go launched for the Kindle Fire a few weeks ago it seemed odd that the app still didn't officially support other Android tablets, but now that has changed. v1.5 is now available on Google Play, and the release notes indicate it supports Android tablets running software up to 4.04 Ice Cream Sandwich. Apple's fiscal Q3 results call coming July 24
Apple is set to deliver its fiscal third-quarter sales results on July 24th at 2 p.m. Pacific time, according to its updated investor relations page. Though the company did introduce the refreshed MacBook line and other products last month, the impact of those announcements will be felt more significantly in the fourth quarter, leading to a consensus (and guidance from Apple) that overall sales will be down somewhat from last quarter.

Microsoft headed toward quarterly loss?
Microsoft is taking a one-time $6.2 billion charge to offset the lack of revenue from aQuantive, an ad service it purchased. The non-cash charge is likely to drive Microsoft $1 billion into the red for its fourth fiscal quarter ending in June, assuming estimates of $5.3 billion in profits pre-charge are correct. Apple has updated its Apple Configurator, a tool used for mass imaging and control of iOS devices for businesses, institutions and other large-scale deployments. Apple Q3 earnings call on July 24 -- will Mountain Lion follow on July 25?
Apple has announced that the Q3 earnings call (April - June, 2012) will be held on July 24. This is important for two reasons: first, the world will get to hear how well the company did over the past three months and second, last year Apple released Lion the day after the Q3 earnings call.
While the company can pretty well call the shots on when it releases the next version of Mac OS X, if Apple follows last year's lead, we might see Mountain Lion in general release on July 25. This, of course, meets the "end of July" deadline for the release of the latest cat.

Google ready to enter Apple vs. Samsung legal battles?
Google has allegedly vowed to back Samsung in the Korean handset maker's ongoing legal battles with Apple, unnamed sources have told the Korea Times. Although Google so far has taken an indirect role in defending device makers that utilize its Android platform, the recent injunction focused on Galaxy Nexus sales, handed down in a California court, is said to have pushed the search giant to deepen its involvement.
