Intel teams up with DeviceScape for automatic public WiFi, will hook up your Ultrabook in the background
We all know the coffee shop WiFi routine: crack open the laptop, visit a splash page, and dutifully wait until you're logged in before you get to Twitter. Through a new deal between Intel and DeviceScape, you won't even have to think about it. Intel's Smart Connect tool will soon automatically sign in your Ultrabook to a curated list of quality, open WiFi hotspots, even if the PC is fast asleep. South Korea's FTC reportedly raids Google again over lack of cooperation
Google might be in trouble for how it handled an earlier raid by South Korean officials over antitrust concerns. Insiders claimed to AllThingsD that the country's Fair Trade Commission stormed Google's Seoul offices again on May 28th after the company allegedly stonewalled the investigation in suspicious ways. Nest expands its reach, begins shipping Learning Thermostat to Canada
The Nest Learning Thermostat has certainly generated plenty of buzz -- and not just by thermostat standards -- but it's so far only be available to those in the United States. That's finally starting to change today, though, with Nest announcing that is has now begun shipping the thermostat to Canada. Briefly: Lovefilm agreement, LA Mobile Arts, NFC Research
Lovefilm has signed a multi-year agreement with NBC Universal to stream Universal Pictures films to its Lovefilm Instant users. The addition of Universal extends the roster of films that currently includes movies from Disney, Sony Pictures, Warner Bros, Entertainment One, and Studio Canal. The streaming agreement would help the Amazon-owned movie rental company fight off Netflix, which launched in the UK in January.

Sorkin: Jobs bio screenplay at 'earliest possible stage'
The screenplay for the Sony biopic based on Walter Isaacson's Steve Jobs biography is in the "earliest possible stage," according to Aaron Sorkin. The screenwriter was interviewed today during the ongoing D10 Conference. "What I'll do is go through a long period that would not look to any casual observer like writing," he remarked. Instead, his early efforts on a screenplay will "look a lot more like watching ESPN to the untrained eye."

Apple files legal response to e-book class-action suit
Apple has now filed a legal response to the similar-but-separate e-book "price-fixing" class-action lawsuit brought by 31 states that mirrors the charges against Apple and two of the five major publishers being pursued by the Department of Justice. Though covering many of the same points and defenses enumerated in the DOJ response, the company argues for dismissal of the civil lawsuit as being a duplicate of the ongoing federal one, among other defenses.

Engineer looks to create Daylight Viewfinder for iPhone
Tired of squinting at your iPhone screen when you're trying to take a sunlit picture at the beach or at a ski area? That was the problem that plagued Oregon inventor and engineer Paul Anderson. Rather than curse the brightness, Anderson created his own solution to the issue -- the US$30 Daylight Viewfinder for iPhone.
The way the device works is simple. It's an eyepiece that sticks to a specific spot on your iPhone screen, blocking out the light as you look into the eyepiece like an optical camera viewfinder. An accompanying free app takes the camera image and shrinks it down; the Daylight Viewfinder's optics magnify the image for easy viewing of details and controls.

Fantastical 1.3 adds reminders, bug fixes
Flexibits has released an update to its Fantastical menu-bar calendar tool. Fantastical 1.3 adds support for both iOS and iCal reminders. That's a feature I've been waiting for. You can choose which calendar's reminders Fantastical should display, and they're color-coded to match the parent calendar.
Reminders appear just above appointments and can be edited with a double-click. As you would expect, you can create reminders as easily as appointments, using natural language. "Remind me to write about Fantastical today" created just the reminder I wanted.

Google Maps 'Android app' gets Zagat 'reviews and ratings'
More Zagat goodness from our friends at Google today. The restaurant guide's scores, summaries, reviews and ratings have "made their way" onto the Android version of Google Maps. Clicking Local in the "latest version of the app" brings up a list of local restaurants, searchable by category. Lenovo IdeaTab S2109 makes a splash Stateside, offers a lightweight slice of Android 4.0 for $349
Lenovo has offered few hints (if unsubtle ones) that the IdeaTab S2109 was on the way, but it's now in the US in earnest. As we saw early on, some of the Android 4.0 tablet's specs read like those of an iPad 2, down to the 9.7-inch, 1024 x 768 IPS panel, 1.3-pound weight and ever so slightly thicker 8.9mm unibody shell. China approves latest iPad for sale
Chinese officials have cleared an unnamed Apple device "with 3G and high-speed wireless data capabilities," confirmed to be the latest iPad, for sale in China, reports The Wall Street Journal. The license means that Apple can finally debut the 2012 iPad in China, even though the country's mobile infrastructure is primarily oriented around 3G data and cannot yet take advantage of the iPad's LTE and enhanced 3G networking technologies.

The news was broken a local blog, which also obtained a document supporting the claim from the country's communications regulator, AGCOM. China approves sale of Apple 3G device, possibly the new iPad
As reported by the Wall Street Journal, China's Telecommunication Equipment Certification Center has approved a license for the sale of an unnamed 3G device from Apple. The device is compatible with China Unicom and is listed as model A1430, which is the model number Apple uses for the new iPad.
Though it is on sale in many countries worldwide, the iPad is not yet available in China. This delayed launch is likely the result of an ongoing legal dispute with Proview over the iPad name. Apple has not publicly commented on a Chinese iPad launch, and a China Unicom spokeswoman declined to comment when approached by the Wall S

ICANN stops taking custom domain names at 7PM ET, details the TLD explosion June 13th
ICANN anticipated that we'd see the first fruits of its open season on top-level domains (TLDs) roughly a year after the hunt began; sure enough, it's winding down applications tonight. If you have the $185,000 plus $25,000 per year to make a domain your own, you've got until midnight GMT (7PM ET) to get that custom spin on the web. Report claims new Apple TV OS to be demonstrated at WWDC
Apple will demonstrate a new version of the Apple TV set-top firmware at next month's WWDC, a Boy Genius Report source claims. The update will allegedly be more feature-complete, and even serve as the interface for Apple's upcoming stand-alone TV set. What exactly the new firmware might introduce is uncertain though, except perhaps support for a new "control out" API.

Leica Monochrom test turns up the ISO, doesn't bring the noise
In the case of "why would you pay $8k for a black and white camera," exhibit 'A' would surely be the lack of a color filter array corrupting the image. Without one, the Leica Monochrom -- with a similar CCD to its M9 stablemate -- should have less noise. HP names Bill Veghte new COO, hands over the keys to HP Software
After successfully piloting HP's software division and, presumably, performing well as the company's chief strategy officer, Bill Veghte is getting a promotion. Effective immediately he'll be taking over as COO of the struggling computer manufacturer and finally handing over the keys to HP Software. As Veghte is forced to give up his executive vice president's position, George Kadifa will be stepping it to take up the charge of leading the non hardware-based part of the business. Leak claims to show schematics for next-gen iPhone
An iPhone repair company, iLab Factory, has produced what it claims are schematics for the next-generation iPhone. The images are consistent with recent photos of alleged next-gen iPhone parts. Similar details include a taller display, and a relocated front camera, placed above the earpiece instead of next to it. Verizon doubles FiOS speeds to 300Mbps, thumb-twiddling waits are officially over
Verizon's IP network traffic jam apparently wasn't that much of an issue, since it just kicked up the speeds for FiOS service by a notch or ten. So langsam schärft sich das Bild vom iPhone 5: nachdem gestern frische Fotos vom mutmaßlichen Gehäuse aufgetaucht sind, gibt es heute die passende schematische Darstellung dazu. Die ist neben dem japanischen Blog Macotakara auch Macrumors zugespielt worden und stimmt in Sachen Maße und Größen mit den Fotos überein: die Fläche für das Display ist mit 90,1 mm mal 51,42 mm groß genug für ein 4-Zoll Display mit einem Seitenverhältnis von ungefähr 16:9 und die Breite entspricht dem des aktuellen iPhone 4S.

Microsoft has updated its AutoUpdate tool for the two most recent versions of Microsoft Office for Mac. The new version, 2.3.4, completely replaces the old auto-updater and will be used to receive future product updates for Office 2008 and Office 2011. Creative has taken the covers off its new range of Sound BlasterAxx Bluetooth wireless speakers with built-in mics for making calls. The article calls out Apple and Microsoft for imposing "an ugly set of restrictions" on what users and programmers can do with mobile devices. Google Nexus tablet appears in benchmarks, appears to run on quad-core Tegra 3
ASUS's seven-inch MeMo tablet has just ducked under the FCC's gates, but some benchmark results for a purported Google and ASUS team-up could tally with the same device. According to the listing, the Google Asus Nexus 7 will arrive with NVIDIA's quad-core Tegra 3 CPU, clocked at 1.3 GHz, while that (presumably) 7-inch screen packs a 768 x 1280 resolution. Wie haben wir uns immer gefreut, wenn bei dem Aufrufen der Web-Adresse www.apple.de/store nicht der Shop des Mac-Herstellers erschien, sondern ein kleiner gelber Post-It-Zettel mit der Aufschrift “We’ll be back soon”. Sprint Nextel on Tuesday reported that will begin phasing out the Nextel network as early as June 30, 2013. Adobe Lightroom 4.1 update official
Adobeis offering an official upgrade to Lightroom after an extended beta release in conjunction with an update to Camera Raw. Lightroom has been updated to version 4.1, addressing several bugs introduced in prior versions of the software, as well as introducing the ability to process HDR TIFF files. HTC customs ban cleared, phones headed to retail
The US Customs and Border Protection department has released the month-long hold on HTC's One X and the Evo 4G LTE. The customs review went into effect on April 19, preventing the Evo 4G LTE from a full retail release through Sprint as expected on May 18. Limited One X phones reached AT&T during the same period. Photo trips with the iPhone 4S and iOS photo apps; past and present
It was about 14 months ago that I took a jaunt to Northern Arizona for a landscape photography trip. I hit Canyon de Chelly, a dramatic area of seldom visited beauty, and the iconic Monument Valley that straddles the Utah and Arizona borders.
On that trip I had my trusty DSLR, a Canon 5D, and for fun I took some shots with the iPhone 4. I've repeated the trip, only this time with my iPhone 4S. What a difference a year makes! I still did the majority of my shooting with my Canon, but for a quick grab and a share with friends and family you can't beat the iPhone 4S photo system.

We had quite the time here at the 2011 edition of D, and if you're fully caught up with last year's shenanigans, it's time to get to work. And by "work," we mean listening in to the opening keynote of DX. The 2012 conference is kicking off in earnest on May 29th, and it'll be Apple CEO Tim Cook taking the stage alongside hosts Walt Mossberg and Kara Swisher. Briefly: Arc & Neo ICS, Huawei 4G router, Terastation 5000
Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) updates have become available today for the Sony Xperia Arc and Neo. The phones will be updated to Android 4.0.4 and will remain on phone kernel version 2.32. Other Xperia phones will be upgraded over the course of the summer. The Xperia Neo was released in July 2011, and the Arc on April 1, 2011.

Lian-Li designs a moving train PC case, makes plugging in a challenge (video)
Lian-Li is a fan of odd-looking PC cases, but the boxes have usually had a tendency to remain stationary. The CK-101 takes away that one certainty: the design stuffs a fully functioning PC case with hard drive bays, a slim optical drive and USB 3.0 ports into an on-the-move model of a steam engine train. 4K TV already being trialed by one UK broadcaster
4K in the UK? It could happen sooner rather than later, if viewers give a thumbs up to feedback tests currently being conducted by a British broadcaster. According to a senior figure at a company that is directly involved in the experiments, people are being asked if they can spot the difference between 4K and regular 1920 x 1080, which will help to decide whether the format is worthy of immediate investment. iPad covers made from children's books
This Etsy seller has come up with a really great idea for iPad cases: Make them out of famous childrens' books. Seller chicklitdesigns has taken the covers of old printings of The Giving Tree, Cat in the Hat, and even Moby Dick, and turned them into cases for iPads, Kindles, and other tablets, available for sale right ow.
Part of me is a little disappointed these books got ripped apart in this way -- there may come a time when we wish we'd had more of these titles around. But it's definitely a cool idea, and a very nice, homemade way to spruce up your iPad. The handmade-to-order cases start at around $79.99.

Daily iPhone App: LostStar Tactics does turn-based strategy right
LostStar Tactics is a brand new game from developer James Pawliuk, and it features one of my favorite types of gameplay. It's a turn-based strategy RPG title, so the goal here is to take a series of characters through a run of battles, controlling their movement and actions from turn to turn. There's lots of fun depth and complexity here -- each character's action is controlled by a deck of cards, and leveling up and completing matches provides more actions and more cards to play with.
The difficulty curve is well-done as well -- the game starts off very easy, but each level has quite a few difficulty levels to explore through, and there are lots of options for progression of your various troops. The interface can be a litt

Nikon pushes out D4, D800 firmware update, fixes lock-up issues and other bugs
It wasn't long ago that we heard about the "lock-up" woes D4 and D800 owners were experiencing on their shiny new shooters, but luckily for them, Nikon just outed a fix to take care of those issues. Anonymous patent challenges filed against Facebook, Apple
Three anonymous ex parte requests challenging the validity of noteworthy patents held by two tech giants were filed with the United States Patent and Trademark Office last week. Two were filed against Apple, while a third challenged a Facebook patent. One was filed versus Apple's patent numbered 7,479,949 for touchscreen interfacing. The second against Apple was patent 7,469,381 in regards to document presentation on a touchscreen display. Facebook's patent involves a dynamic news feed about a user of a social network. The instigators of all three complaints are unknown.

Quad Lock mounting system keeps your iPhone at hand anywhere
There are a lot of mounting systems for both iPhone and iPad, so news of another one usually doesn't trip my trigger. However, there's a new mounting system from Down Under that caught my attention recently thanks to its relatively low cost and low-profile design. Prototype dual-dock iPad sells for $10,200 on Ebay
Surprising observers who had speculated that Apple would close down the auction, a rare prototype iPad with two 30-pin dock connectors sold for a total of $10,200, about $200 above the original asking price. The unit had dock connectors on the "bottom" and "left side" of the iPad, and was functional except for a faulty digitizer, which renders the touchscreen inoperative. The unit still had Apple's "Switchboard" testing software included.
