Apple prepping London stores for 2012 Olympics
TUAW has learned that Apple has quietly begun making preparations for the "onslaught of journalists" that are set to arrive in London for the 2012 Olympics, which are less than four months away.
A high-level Apple retail employee here in London told me today that the company is planning to stock its London area retail stores with international replacement MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, and MacBook keyboards. Kingston has just introduced its latest SSD range, the Hyper X 3K, meant to appeal to budget buyers who still want some performance. Netflix for Android updated with fresher UI for volume controls, other 'stability improvements'
Heads-up, Android users -- Netflix has just issued a revised build of its app on the aforementioned platform, and while the changelog here is but three points long, they seem to be somewhat significant. Notion Ink Adam 2 won't have HD screen due to battery constraints
Notion Ink has already revealed a few of the features its forthcoming Adam 2 tablet will have, and it's now also confirmed something it won't have: an HD (or higher res) screen like some of its competitors. Adobe Reader desktop, iOS, Android get signature support
Users of Adobe's free Reader apps got a major upgrade Tuesday through the ability to digitally sign PDF files. How apps might work on an iPhone with a bigger screen
The Verge has an interesting article on the iPhone and how Apple could boost the screen size from 3.5-inches to a luxurious 4.0-inches without disrupting apps in the iOS App Store.
The Verge argues that all it would take to design an iOS-compatible, 4-inch retina display is to change the aspect ratio of the iPhone display from its current 3:2 to a larger 9:5. This would result in a screen that was 640 x 1152 and, as they show in screenshots, would scale current iOS apps nicely.

Sony hat neue VAIO-Laptops vorgestellt, die zwar nicht durch besonders spektakuläre Specs bestechen, aber dafür ein interessantes Feature mitbringen: die Modelle der VAIO E Series 14P lassen sich durch Gesten steuern, jedenfalls wenn Programme entsprechend vorbereitet daher kommen, was erstmal nur für Windows Media Player, IE9, PowerPoint und PowerDVD zutrifft, aber das muss ja noch nicht das Ende der Fahnenstange sein. Cogoo's Turntable Rider puts the 'mix' in BMX, 'awesome' in these videos
What if a company built a mixer for your BMX bike? What if said mixer could wirelessly control the music you're grooving to while riding? What if we had two videos to prove that such luxuries do, in fact, exist? Japan's own Cogoo has gone well above the call of duty with its latest concoction, the Turntable Rider. Put simply (or as simply as possible), it's a multi-part system that enables a bike to become a DJing machine; the more complex the tricks, the 'better' the mix. Google has posted a Chrome 19 beta that answers a common call for fast access to tabs across devices. Signing in on the same Google account both on a desktop and an Android device running Chrome for Android will give either device access to whatever tabs happen to be open on that device at that moment. Apple recruits Symantec exec to head tax department
Apple has managed to hire away a Symantec executive, Phillip Bullock, to serve as the new head of its tax department, a 8-K form filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission reveals. While at Symantec, Bullock was a senior VP and the company's chief accounting officer. "[Bullock] announced he will be leaving the Company to lead the tax department at Apple, Inc., and not due to any disagreement with the Company on any matters relating to the Company's operations, policies or practices," the 8-K states.

Macworld's Jason Snell says what we're all thinking about iTunes
Those of you who remember iTunes when it was new, when it was merely a revamped version of SoundJam MP, will sympathize the most here. iTunes used to be a great tool for playing music and ripping CD's. Then the iTunes music store came along and it was good. Then apps came along and iTunes went bananas. Jason Snell, Macworld's editorial director, argues iTunes needs an overhaul, and I couldn't agree more. Apple recently asked a web registrar, Reggi.ru, to shut down a domain belonging to the Russian security firm Dr. Web, the latter company's CEO has revealed. Boris Sharov says the registrar informed him about the request on Monday. Apple's reasoning was that the domain was being used as a command-and-control server for computers infected with the Flashback Trojan. Sharov notes, though that the domain is actually hosting a "sinkhole," a spoofed C&C server used to monitor computers linked in the Flashback botnet.

Gartner: tablets to surge 98% in 2012, iPad to lead in 2016
Apple will stay out in front of the tablet market for at least the next four years, Gartner predicted in a long-term estimate on Tuesday. The analyst group saw sales for the entire tablet market for 2012 nearly doubling, up 98 percent to 118.9 million, with Apple still in the clear majority at 73 million. While the gap would close, Apple would keep the largest piece of the market even until 2016.

AT&T spending more to launch the Lumia than it did on the iPhone
AT&T is investing heavily in the Nokia Lumia 900 and spending more money on the Windows Phone handset launch than it did on the iPhone, according to a report in Ad Age.
The wireless carrier may be spending as much as US$150 million to advertise the phone, which is an AT&T exclusive. This is a lot of money, even for a carrier like AT&T and leaves us wondering why it would spend so much on a platform that is losing market share.

Stock of 15-inch MacBook Pros shrinking ahead of refresh
A number of third-party vendors are running out of the 15-inch MacBook Pro, AppleInsider notes. J&R is listing 2.2GHz systems as "out of stock," and 2.4GHz machines are "on order." Best Buy's online storefront has stopped doing home deliveries of 2.4GHz Pros, and while it is continuing to sell them at retail, many outlets in US cities like Austin and Chicago may not have units available. Another reseller, MacConnection, briefly ran out of 2.2GHz Pros earlier this week but now has units again.

TextWrangler 4.0: Now even better, still free
The good folks over at Bare Bones Software have just released version 4.0 of their classic and free text editor for Mac OS X, TextWrangler. I talked with Bare Bones head wrangler Rich Siegel a few weeks ago about what was set to come out, and the company has basically added a lot of great new features to a classic app.
Siegel noted that the previous version of the app pre-dates OS X Lion, so it needed a bit of refreshing. TextWrangler 4.0 works only on Intel-based Macs running OS X 10.6 and later. US carriers agree to national stolen phone database
According to a Wall Street Journal report, four of the largest wireless carriers in the US are working with the US government to create a national stolen phone database. Verizon Wireless, AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile will develop their own databases and then merge them into a centralized server within the next 18 months. Eventually, regional carriers will also participate in this initiative.
The database will help carriers and law enforcement track lost and stolen phones. Besides tracking phones, carriers have agreed to block both calling and data services for these blacklisted phones. This will be an easy task for Verizon and Sprint, but not so simple for T-Mobile and AT&T.

AT&T unlocking military iPhones, older models
AT&T is quietly extending its iPhone unlocking efforts to deployed US military personnel, regardless of their contract status, a report says. Unlocking normally requires an iPhone to be off-contract. Chrome OS update pushes Aura desktop UI to devs
When the Aura UI first reared its rather ugly head back in November it was unclear what the future of the project was. Now, though, the hardware accelerated window manager and desktop has grown up (at least a little bit) and is being pushed out to owners of Acer and Samsung Chromebooks running on the dev channel. It's becoming clear that Google is prepping to take on the desktop OS market on more familiar ground. The updated UI includes a taskbar, a Launchpad-like launcher and individual overlapping windows, while hardware acceleration allows for those new components to feature slick animations.

OnLive Desktop changes from Windows 7 to Windows Server 8
OnLive launched its virtual desktop service for the iPad and was immediately rebuked by Microsoft over licensing issues with the Windows 7-based service. The company has switched from Windows 7 to Windows Server 2008 R2 and is now in compliance, says a report in Ars Technica. Windows Server 2008 and Windows 7 are based on the same codebase and can be configured to look the same, so users shouldn't notice any change in the service.

AT&T appears to be unlocking iPhones for deployed active duty military personnel

A couple of days ago we got a tip from a reader who said he'd sent a letter to Tim Cook asking "for help to unlock my wife's iPhone, because she is active duty military deploying to Afghanistan this week. I wanted her to have an unlocked phone in Afghanistan, so that she can get a local SIM and use it. I had tried both AT&T and Apple customer care for it, but no use. The made me go round robin between two support centers."
Worse, our friend Yash was called by someone at Apple to explain that his unlock request was denied because the 4S was still under contract. Apparently he read later that day about unlocks happening for out-of-contract phones, and called again to unlock

Google's latest developer channel release for Chrome OS has revealed pressure to bring it back to more of a traditional desktop. A new window manager, Aura, now gives it a Windows-like taskbar ("shelf") and multiple windows, much like the conventional operating system it was hoping to avoid. There are dozens of weather apps for the iPhone, and most are variations on a theme. Not Rain Aware, an extremely interesting weather app that will tell you when it is going to rain, and when it is going to stop. It does it in very plain language, and as near as I can tell it does it pretty well.
The app figures out where you are, and after invoking some smart algorithms, it tells you about the weather not for your general area, but for where you are. It updates every minute, and also gives you a forecast for nearby points of interest, like airports, golf courses and sports stadiums.

Commodore-Gründer Jack Tramiel ist tot
Jack Tramiel, Gründer von Commodore, ist im Alter von 83 Jahren gestorben. Er hatte die Firma 1954 als Hersteller für Schreibmaschinen gegründet und dann über den Umweg von mechanischen Addiermaschinen und später Tachenrechnern 1977 mit dem Commodore PET zum Computerkonzern gemacht. Gleich der zweite Commodore-Rechner war der erste PC, der sich mehr als eine Million mal verkaufte: der VIC-20, hierzulande als VC-20 vermarktet und Vorgänger des C64 (der heute , der den Begriff Heimcomputer prägen sollte und sich stolze 17 Millionen Mal verkaufte. Tramiel verließ seine eigene Firma 1984 und kaufte Atari, wo er unter anderem für den ebenfalls sehr erfolgreichen Atari ST sorgte.

AT&T has gotten a good amount of attention lately for unlocking off-contract iPhone handsets, but a recent report from MacRumors suggests that the carrier is extending the same privilege to members of the US military currently serving overseas. Facebook geht einkaufen, anscheinend auch gern Firmen, die selbst kein Geld verdienen: jetzt hat Mark Zuckerberg angekündigt, dass man die Instagram für eine Milliarde Dollar übernehmen wolle. Kurz vor dem geplanten Börsengang, der an der Nasdaq stattfinden wird, soll das Portfolio anscheinend noch ein wenig aufgepolstert werden, Instagram-User sollen aber nicht gezwungen werden, Facebook zu benutzen. Zuckerberg will Instagram auch unabhängig weiterentwickeln, die Integration dürfte aber trotzdem nicht lange auf sich warten lassen.

Iran swapping internet for intranet in August, this post to vanish there soon after
There's dealing with internet comments, and then there's this. According to a statement from Reza Taghipour, the Iranian minister for Information and Communications Technology, Iran will be shutting off access to the world wide in around five months, as it flips the switch on a nationwide "intranet" that'll act like one of the more strict corporate firewalls you may have come in contact with. The reason? It's looking to provide its citizens access to "a clean internet," which is loosely translated into "an internet sans freedom." Android SDK updated, brings GPU, CPU acceleration
Google has updated its Android SDK to version r18, bringing new features to Android developers on Mac, Linux and Windows. The biggest change is built-in GPU support, along with OpenGL ES 2.0 -- finally allowing game developers to test OpenGL games inside the emulator. The new version, coming just a week after r17, builds on the previous releases' x86 system images and host drivers. The new version also supports more hardware features in emulation.

Google Play Music adds HTML5 audio, replacing Flash
Google has updated its Google Play (formerly Android Market) Music subsection with some new, "experimental" controls that include a toggle for using HTML5 rather than Flash for desktops, along with the replacement of the "thumbs up/down" rating system with a five-star rating, the iTunes standard. For Chrome users, the service can now provide desktop notifications. The changes mark the continuation of efforts to improve the service, which officially launched in November.

RIM clarifies, to use unique locked BlackBerry app sideloads
RIM's Developer Relations VP Alec Saunders on Monday clarified his position on restricting sideloading on the BlackBerry PlayBook and BlackBerry 10. He noted that, rather than blocking a manual transfer of an app from PC to device, RIM would be encrypting apps to prevent bootlegged copies while still allowing legitimate sideloads from developers and end users who'd downloaded the title. He indirectly positioned it as a balance between Apple's mostly locked down view and the loosely checked Android method.

US carriers agree to build stolen phone database, blacklist hot handsets
What's the best way to deter a thief? Ruin the spoils, of course. Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint have agreed to a broad outline that will culminate in the creation of a central database for stolen cellphones. The goal? To block lifted units from functioning on US shores. FCC, carriers team on stolen cellphone database
The FCC as well as AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon have reached an agreement to potentially improve tracking down stolen cellphones. A common database will register phones and their IMEIs that were marked as stolen or lost and deny them voice or data until they're considered safe. The effort will start with individual databases in half a year, followed by a united pool in the year and a half following that point.

Doing a little desktop DJing with Kinect and a MIDI device is nothing new, but last year a man with loftier musical machinations took Kinect conducting to the next level. Chris Vik composed a piece that he and vocalist Elise Richards performed using the sensor bar and the massive Town Hall organ in Melbourne, Australia last November. Recently, he released a video explaining how he made the magic happen. HTC's One S got clues it was much closer to release after leaks of internal staff training. Material passed on to TmoNews have it selling the phone on April 25, which is likely "Final" barring a delay. Chitika: new iPads already 10 percent of total iPad mix
A new study by analytics analysis firm Chitika suggests that the presence of third-generation iPads in internet traffic has doubled since the initial four-day launch window, now showing that the 2012 model is making up around 10 percent of all iPads surfing the net after only three weeks availability. While online tracking metrics are not a direct method for measuring sales, the average rate of online growth can be inferred to be an indicator of popularity.

Padzilla Two mates iPad and Kinect for Fruit Ninja madness
If you've ever wanted to see what a cross between an iPad and a Kinect would result in, Crunchy Logistics just unveiled its Padzilla Too video display that utilizes both. The bound-to-be pricey display projects what Crunchy Logistics claims is the largest reproduction of the iPad in the world onto a wall. The 24-feet wide and 12-feet tall iPad screen, constructed with 3.5mm LED wall matrix display technology, can be controlled by Kinect gestures.

Last week at IETF 83 in Paris Mozilla gave a little demo that went almost completely unnoticed. Nuance updates its PDF converter for Mac
Nuance has released the newest version of its PDF Converter for Mac software. New features introduced include direct connections to cloud services such as PaperPort Anywhere and Evernote, and a FormTyper that converts PDF and paper into electronic forms that can be used online.

Glendale Apple Store fined $200 for overcharging error
Following an investigation by the LA consumer protection agency, one of the Glendale Apple stores has been fined a $200 civil penalty for overcharging on an item. The Americana at Brand store apparently sold an unnamed item (likely to be a Mac system) for $70 more than the lowest advertised store price at the time. Apple normally sells all new items at normal retail price, and any price fluctuation -- either lower or higher -- is uncommon. The incident occurred last August.

OnLive Desktop migrates to Windows Server 2008, sidesteps licensing concerns?

Comcast access to the HBO Go app on Xbox 360 is live

RIM says BlackBerry still gaining in US government deals
RIM's market share of the US government is going up, The copmany's Senior VP of BlackBerry security Scott Totzke argued in an interview held late last week and published Monday. While the enterprise was still a soft point, he noted to Bloomberg that the total number of installs was slightly growing even with cutbacks meaning fewer employees. About 400,000 units were sold to the government for federal-level workers in the past year, and 40 percent of clients had upgraded, although most of those were BlackBerry 6 given BB7's clearance in February.

This week the baseball season is in full swing and while we wait for the NBA to get its postseason started the NHL is already kicking off its race for the Stanley Cup. OnLive switches to Windows Server 2008 to keep mobile app
OnLive has quietly settled the OnLive Desktop licensing dispute with Microsoft. A check at OnLiveFans found that the streaming software company has switched over to Windows Server 2008 R2 instead of Windows 7 for the OS users see.
