Google currents: Ein erster Test
So, die ersten Minuten mit dem neuen Google Spielzeug Google currents.
Die ersten Eindrücke:
Die App macht einen sehr aufgeräumten und schönen Eindruck. Wie von Google gewohnt hat man beim Anmelden wieder das Gefühl sich auf einer Weboberfläche zu befinden. Sehr träge und altbacken. Allerdings ist man das schon von der GMail App gewohnt. Nach dem Anmelden verschwindet das Gefühl jedoch, und man kann sagen dass die App sehr flüssig und schnell reagiert.

Google brings better YouTube integration to Orkut, hopes you haven't forgotten
Remember Orkut? You know, one of Google's early efforts at diving into the social networking game. Well, the website's still operating at full force, with more than three quarters of its 66 million users coming from Brazil and India alone. The point is, Big G's still keeping tabs on the O network, thus the news of an improved YouTube integration shouldn't come as a surprise. With the fresh features, Orkut folks are able to watch / listen to videos without having to step out of their current session, saving them an extra trip to YouTube's site. IDC, Gartner: Apple over 10% of US PCs, worldwide PCs drag
Both Gartner and IDC provided early estimates of winter 2012 market share that showed Apple making big strides in the US. The two gave the Mac a tentative share of 10 or 10.6 percent, in either case enough to put it in third place. Both saw rapidly falling Acer and Toshiba (incorrectly marked as HP in a chart) below Apple in share.

CloudOn updates to 2.0.3, adds Box and e-mail sharing
CloudOn, a free iPad productivity tool that offers a cloud-hosted version of Microsoft Office has updated to version 2.0.3, adding support for cloud storage service Box as well as Dropbox. The company has also expanded the number of supported file types by integrating a PDF reader and file viewer that opens almost any file type, and have also built in e-mailing files to colleagues. The program relies on services like Dropbox and Box to handle file management.

Google Currents app updated with international support, offline reading
Folks in the US have been able to use the Google Currents app to read various websites (including this one) with more of a magazine-style layout since late last year, and now those outside the country can finally get in on the act as well. Google has today rolled out version 1.1 of the app for Android and iOS, which makes the service available worldwide with support for 44 languages, and adds a number of other improvements including

iPhone demand still growing despite distance from 4S launch
Demand for the iPhone has actually grown since the release of the iPhone 4S, a new ChangeWave Research study claims. The firm polled 4,413 people in March; of the people who said they would buy a smartphone in the next 90 days, 56 percent said they were planning to buy an iPhone. That figure is actually up two points from December, which not only represented part of the holiday shopping season, but came just two months after the launch of the 4S.

Verizon Wireless to start charging $30 handset upgrade fee
A Reuters report claims Verizon Wireless will start charging customers an additional US$30 when they upgrade their phone. This fee will apply to existing customers who buy new hardware with a two-year customer agreement. Verizon says it's levying this additional charge in order to "provide customers with the level of service and support they have come to expect." New Apple TV's A5 chip found using 32nm design
The latest 1080p-capable Apple TV uses an A5 processor but it is based on 32nm architecture, the Chipworks crew found when they dissected the media player. The part number, APL2498, thus mainly differs from the previous-generation A5 chip (part number APL0498) used in the iPhone 4S by being based on Samsung Semiconductors' 32nm high-k metal gate LP CMOS process technology. The older chip used Samsung's 45nm LP CMOS process.

Demand for the iPhone 4S still high six months after its release
A recent ChangeWave survey suggests demand for the iPhone 4S is still high six months after the handset launched. ChangeWave surveyed 4,413 consumers and 56 percent of future smartphone buyers say they plan on purchasing an iPhone. This is up two percentage points from a previous survey conducted in December 2011. During this same period, demand for Samsung's phones stayed the same while Motorola slipped one percentage point.

Online Apple store gets new chat window, screen-sharing test
The online Apple store's earlier downtime appears to have brought two minor upgrades. The sales chat window has undergone a cosmetic improvement, more consistent with modern Apple aesthetics. StatCounter finds 1366 x 768 to be most popular screen resolution for the first time
It's had quite a run, but it looks like the old standby resolution of web designers everywhere, 1024 x 768, has finally been eclipsed by a newer, wider rival. According to web analytics firm StatCounter, use of 1024 x 768 fell from 41.8 percent in March of 2009 to 18.6 percent this March, while 1366 x 768 (common to many laptops) shot up from just 0.68 percent to 19.28 percent during the same time period, making it the most popular screen resolution worldwide. 1280 x 800 sits in third place at 13 percent, while all other resolutions remain in the single digits. Checks: AT&T staff still recommending iPhone over Lumia 900
Early investigations have suggested that Nokia and AT&T attempts to have staff use the Lumia 900 may not be having an impact on actual recommendations in the short term. A tour by CNET of five Manhattan-area AT&T stores just after launch showed that staff not only didn't know much about the Windows Phone flagship but were actively steering users to the iPhone. As Time Goes By HD for iPad is half-baked
Every so often we get a request to review some software that sounds intriguing and we try it and like it. This is not one of those times.
I've been playing with As Time Goes By, an app that has what is advertised as 'compatible with new iPad resolution'. The app has full screen time lapse loops of several cities like New York, London, Berlin, and one scenic spot, the Grand Canyon. The app also offers an optional display of local time and weather information.
Let's get down to it. While the time lapse movies are compatible with the new iPad retina display, that doesn't mean they are high resolution. In fact, I'd say they are not the full resolution of the iPad 2. Worse, the loops are too short. The Grand Canyon loop, for exam

Kyocera joins forces with IHI and Mizuho on 70-megawatt solar plant
Japan is often on the cutting edge of technology, but one of the things it apparently does not have is a collection of large solar power plants. Macmillan: DOJ 'too onerous,' Amazon would regain monopoly
Macmillan CEO John Sargent in an open letter blasted the Department of Justice for its e-book antitrust lawsuit. He insisted that his publishing company had "done no wrong" and that he, alone, had Macmillan switch to an agency model that hiked e-book prices. Revealing more than the DOJ had mentioned itself while confirming rumors, he said talks had broken down after "months" and that the DOJ's terms would allegedly let Amazon go back to the wholesale model and unfairly dominate through artificially low prices.

Japanese biometric ATM reads your palm, tells fortune
A palm reading cash machine might not tell you your fortune, but it will, at least, dispense some of it. Ogaki Kyoritsu Bank in Japan has revealed that it will introduce the nation's first ATM that lets you withdraw money just by scanning your palm. This isn't the first ATM to use extra human verification, but it claims it's the first that functions without the need for your cash card. iPad being slowed by display supply, better labor standards
Any problems with iPad shipments at the moment are more attributable to restrictions on display supply, and Apple suppliers conforming to "more sound" labor standards, says Sterne Agee analyst Shaw Wu. "Recently, we have gotten questions from investors whether speculation of iPad production cuts carry any merit. From our supply chain checks, we believe concerns have good intentions but misplaced as it appears that production is limited more by supply of new HD retina displays and conforming to more sound labor practices vs. slowing demand," he writes in a new memo.

Almost exactly one year after launching the original 8GB Mobile X2 SDHC memory card, Eye-Fi has used a Japanese launch to introduce another example with the Direct Mode built-in. Verizon to 'compete' with AT&T by adding $30 upgrade fee
Verizon underscored competitive problems in the US cellular marketplace on Wednesday by instituting a $30 device upgrade fee. DOJ sues Apple, publishers over e-book pricing
As suspected, the US Department of Justice has sued Apple and publishers over claims of unfair e-book pricing. The complaint accuses Apple of colluding with publishers by both requiring a switch to an agency model, where publishers set the prices and ask for more, as well as demanding "most favored nation" status where no rival could have a lower price than the iBookstore. Some publishers are believed to have settled, but Hachette, HarperCollins, Macmillan, Penguin, and Simon & Schuster are all targeted.

Security firm Kaspersky Lab has released a free software utility for removing the Flashback Trojan, which has infected a number of Macs worldwide. Is Apple avoiding taxes in the UK?
The Daily Mail is reporting that Apple only paid £10 million in UK corporation tax for the last fiscal year, even though the country earned £6 billion in the UK. The paper has also accused Amazon and Google of UK tax avoidance as well. The report also discusses Apple's operations in Ireland, where the corporate tax is half that of the UK, and a Caribbean-based location.
Apple has previously lobbied for a one-year "tax holiday" in the US, hoping to bring some of its overseas cash stockpile back to the US.

Intel sees $699 ultrabooks in 2012, 75 models in pipeline
Intel PC Client general manager Kirk Skaugen used a keynote at the Beijing edition of the Intel Developer Forum to predict a heavy saturation of the ultrabook market. He saw ultrabook prices reaching down to $699 by the back-to-school period at the end of the summer, or down from the $899 and up more common today. Mit “Syn” findet sich aktuell eine böswillige Spam-App ganz weit oben in den App Store Charts welche sich die Kontrolle über euer Facebook-Profil aneignen und in eurem Namen Spam versenden kann.
Die kostenpflichtige iPhone-Applikation “Syn” rangiert aktuell im österreichischen App Store bereits auf Platz 6, im deutschen Store “erst” auf Rang 75.

Reuters: Department of Justice ready to sue Apple over ebook price fixing
A report from Reuters suggests the Department of Justice could file a lawsuit against Apple today over alleged ebook price fixing. Publishers involved in the price-fixing scheme are supposedly settling with the government, while Apple has stayed out of the negotiations. As a result, Apple could face legal action by the government as early as Wednesday. Reuters reached out to Apple and the company declined to comment.

Nokia warns of lower phone oultook, ships 2m Lumias
Nokia sent out a warning on Wednesday that its results for the first quarter of 2012 would be worse than expected as its smartphone sales continued to struggle. Its operating margin would now be down by three percent instead of flat, while that for the just-started spring quarter would be similar or lower. Adobe updated its Reader app for iOS, and what was a good PDF reader is now an excellent tool to annotate and sign documents. As luck would have it, I needed to add a note and sign a PDF file that was sent to me via email today. This rare occurrence gave me the opportunity to check out these new features using the iPad version of the Reader app.
The latest version of Adobe Reader has several new tools for marking up a document including a freehand drawing tool, a highlighter, strikethrough, and underline. You can take a page in a PDF document and use these tools to point out spelling errors, highlight important text, mark sections for deletion and more. Stride brings gesture-based unlock to jailbroken iOS devices
A new tool for jailbroken iOS devices allows users to set up and draw a gesture to unlock the device, replacing the "slide to unlock" bar or passcode method currently used by the devices. Called Stride, it uses a pre-defined gesture drawn by the user to override the default lock controls, though the program has a bit of "fuzziness" built-in so users don't have to replicate the gesture exactly. Leak: NFC-Version des Nokia Lumia 610 taucht auf Youtube auf
NFC, Nokia und Windows Phone gab es bisher erstaunlicherweise nicht zusammen in dieser Kombination, das wird sich aber anscheinend in naher Zukunft ändern. In einem Video das kurz im Youtube-Account von Nokia zu sehen war (und schnell von Thegadgetbuff gerippt wurde) gibt es Interview mit Andrea Bacioccola, der anscheinend "Lead program manager, NFC" bei Nokia ist und davon berichtet, dass Orange der erste Provider sein wird, bei dem das Nokia Lumia 610 kommt. Was es alles können wird, erfahrt ihr wenn ihr im Video nach dem Break ganz genau hinhört, denn die Audioqualität ist, nun ja, etwas grob.

iTunes: Ping komplett entfernen
Via iTunes-Menü kann der Soziale-Musik-Dienst bereits weitestgehend deaktiviert werden. Hier und da taucht das, für viele nervende, soziale Netzwerk für Musik jedoch noch auf.
Mit diesem Befehl schafft Ihr endgültig Abhilfe:

Wer hätte das gedacht? Dass sich noch einmal ein TV-Sender ernsthaft am guten alten BattleBots-Konzept versucht? Und dass sich Großkinogefühlsquetscher James Cameron für so ein Roboterspäßchen im Fernsehen hergibt? Ist aber so: James Cameron soll für den Discovery Channel den Kampf Roboter-gegen-Roboter dramatischer und bunter in Szene setzen, als das bei den bisherigen, doch recht beschaulichen Sendeformaten (BattleBots, Robot Wars) der Fall war. Die Bots werden aber wohl nach wie vor von Destruktions-Enthusiasten zusammengefrickelt werden. Wir sind gespannt.

The Apple online store went offline for a little over three hours early Wednesday, normally not an unusual occurrence as the store often goes offline for around the same amount of time nearly every week. Das Schattendasein des Macintosh ist schon lange vorbei. Rund um den Apfel ist eine neue (Internet-)Kultur losgebrochen, und es gibt nicht mehr nur eine Handvoll wichtiger Seiten für das ein oder andere Problem.

YouTube gives live video streamers better production tools, ways to make money

That's right, folks: Instagram now supports HTC One X
Upon it's debut, one notable smartphone was curiously absent from Instagram's list of supported devices: the HTC One X. Thankfully, all of that worry is now behind filter lovers, as the latest update for this Android app has added support for HTC's premiere superphone and its stellar camera. In addition, the refresh is said to deliver better support for all devices based on NVIDIA's Tegra 3 platform, provide better support for tablet users and squash a nasty bug that'd caused Instagram photos to not appear in the gallery. Nokia discounts Lumia 900 to free while working on data fix
Nokia in a statement said it would temporarily cut the price of the Lumia 900 even further. The firm told AllThingsD that it would compensate buyers hit by the disappearing data bug on the Windows Phone by either giving them a retroactive credit or with the purchase. The deal will last until April 21.

Apple rumored testing iTunes 11 with iCloud control
New rumors mixed with more concrete details has pointed to Apple actively testing iTunes 11. Test build screenshots slipped to 9to5 purportedly have a central iCloud panel that would control all iTunes-related iCloud features, such as iTunes Match or device backups. The build would also have iOS 6 compatibility, although it might not be necessary and could be preceded by a 10.x update instead.

Apple publishes support page for Flashback malware, is working on a fix
After the Flashback / Flashfake Mac trojan was exposed by Russian site Dr. Web, Apple has finally responded by publishing a support page about the issue and promising a fix. If you haven't heard by now, the malware exploits a flaw in the Java Virtual Machine, which Oracle pushed a fix for back in February, but Apple didn't patch until a botnet consisting of as many as 650,000 Macs was identified on March 4th. Antivirus maker Kaspersky has confirmed the earlier findings, and released a free tool affected users can run to remove the trojan from their computers. Other than the update already delivered

DOJ lawsuit against Apple over e-books may come Wednesday
A pair of sources said Tuesday that the Department of Justice may sue Apple over its e-book pricing concerns as soon as tomorrow, April 11. Deals were being wrapped up with "several" publishers this week, Reuters had heard, but Apple wasn't in discussions and could face legal action soon. No final decision had been made, which given the timing could see a lawsuit moved until later.

Apple responds to Flashback trojan, promises removal tool
In a tech note published today, Apple discussed the Flashback trojan (past coverage here) and reminded users of OS X 10.6 and 10.7 that they should install the April 3 Java update to remove the vulnerability that the malware uses to infect Macs. For users of OS X 10.5 Leopard or earlier, Apple has not updated Java yet to patch the flaw; in that case, Apple's recommendation is to turn off Java in the browser to guard against Flashback.

Nokia makes Lumia 900 free to all AT&T customers, now through April 21st
Now through April 21st, any AT&T customer who purchases a Lumia 900 will receive a $100 rebate from Nokia -- effectively making the device free. The move is ostensibly a goodwill gesture from the Finnish manufacturer, which confirmed that a small number of early Lumia 900 handsets shipped from the factory with faulty software that caused memory management issues. It insists this issue is now fixed and that all affected consumers may swap their device at any AT&T store or merely download the update. Previously, AT&T had announced a $100 mail-in rebate for

Apple working on Flashback removal tool
The Flashback malware, which has been seen to have affected as much as one percent of the Mac user base (the highest percentage of any threat so far), has finally received an official KnowledgeBase article by Apple that explains how the Trojan works, recommends how to avoid being at risk, and says the company is working on a Flashback detection and removal tool. The brief report also mentions Apple's efforts to disable the Trojan's effectiveness by disabling the servers the malware attempts to contact.

Apple updates Final Cut Pro X, Compressor and Motion ahead of NAB
Next week is the big show: the National Association of Broadcasters' annual exhibition and conference in Las Vegas kicks off April 14, and every video software and hardware company will be on hand, eager to meet customers new and old. Just in time to land on laptops before everyone packs up for their flights, Apple has updated the Final Cut Pro X suite.

Archos Child Pad arrives at FCC, escapes drool-free
If our eyes don't deceive us, that's the Archos Child Pad that just arrived at the FCC. Now, we know what you're thinking: any proper test of this tablet would require someone gnawing on the corners and drooling on the screen, but c'mon -- this is the FCC we're talking about. Curiously, the test documents reveal support for 802.11n, which comes as a nice surprise, since we'd previously only known of support for 802.11b/g. Apple updates Final Cut Pro, Motion with performance fixes
Apple this evening pushed up minor updates to both Final Cut Pro and Motion, two components of its professional video-editing suite. Both are considered small updates designed to improve stability and performance and do not introduce new features, though the Final Cut update does enhance performance of multicam syncing and editing, and adds Simplified Chinese support. Motion gets performance improvements as well, but the update is mostly bug fixes.

Micron intros mSATA SSDs for ultrathin notebooks
Micron has announced that it has expanded its SSD lineup to include mSATA models geared for ultrathin notebooks. The new drives are based on the company's existing RealSSD C400 drives, but with a Mini SATA connector and stripped away housing for notebooks that require a 3cm x 5cm footprint.

Apple, Google, Amazon accused of dodging some UK taxes
British tabloid newspaper The Daily Mail has accused several leading technology companies, including Apple, of dodging their fair share of UK taxes by setting up operations only in parts of that nation that offer lower-than-average tax rates. The charges were triggered by an investigation of online retailer Amazon, which switched its European headquarters to Luxembourg and ended up not paying a penny in British corporation tax for the past two years.

CloudOn bolsters it Office-friendly iPad app with support for Box and Adobe Reader
CloudOn managed to attract a fair bit of attention earlier this year with its cloud-based app that indirectly brought Microsoft Office to the iPad, and it's now back with version 2.0 of said app. That doesn't change a whole lot on the surface (though there are some UI tweaks), but it does add support for Box in addition to Dropbox for storage, as well as support for PDFs, PSDs and other formats handled by Adobe Reader. As before, the app is free, and CloudOn assures folks that it has officially licensed the technology from Microsoft and Adobe.

Sprint website hints at Samsung Galaxy Note for the Now Network
Well, color us tickled, but upon our recent visit to Sprint's website, we found a curious, unbranded device that looks awfully similar to Samsung's Galaxy Note. Might this fantastic phablet be the next big thing to hit the Now Network, or is it merely the whim of a careless graphic designer? Only time will tell, but with Sprint's recent push for LTE handsets, it seems unlikely that -- if this phone were to arrive -- it'd feature Samsung's mighty Exynos processor that we love so dearly.

Samsung rules big PC displays, Apple leads in US
New NPD DisplaySearch data has shown that Samsung and Apple have been in a mostly unstated rivalry for the desktop LCD market. Samsung has the worldwide lead for 24-inch and larger LED-lit displays at 34.7 percent, knocking Apple out of the top spot it held in 2010. In the US, while Apple was down from an absolute majority of 53.3 percent, it was still on top at 26.2 percent to Samsung's 24.3.
